Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This work is of high importance to both the scientific and beekeeping communities as it gathers all the important information and gives them appropriate context.

I have a few minor regards:

  1. latin names should be in cursive
  2. line 33 in the Introduction: I suggest adding "to infect honeybees" at the end of the sentence

The aim of the paper is to give an overview on the current methods to prevent and control nosemosis, disease of honey bees. Authors have done a nice overview of the current knowledge and wrapped it up in nice paper. Although an article contains a lot of data and information, I believe that improving the language style by native speaker would significantly contribute to a better and easier readability of the article itself. One major comment goes for references; in the text some are written in brackets and some by surname of the author.

Specific comments

16 – full stop is missing after Nosema ceranae.

16 – suggestion: In this paper we describe the currently known techniques...

26 - Nosema spp. are microsporidia which cause nosemosis in the honey bee (Apis mellifera L.).

34-42 - Latin names of species should be written italic.

34-42 – the part itself is quite difficult to follow so I suggest rewriting this part to sound better and clearer.

46 – decrease in honey production

L59 – why subtitle Material and Methods is needed here? This is a review article. I suggest to go with 2. Prevention methods and 3. Control methods.

60 – in this subtitle you call biosecurity methods, while in text (and abstract) these are called biosecurity measures. I suggest to choose and stick to one name.

61-62 – GBPs are also very important to guarantee quality of products, do not forget this.

83 – reference should be cited as number. However, I can’t find a paper in references list that is described in this box.

92 – reference should be cited as a number. Also, Simeunovic is missing in the references list.

L127 – in my opinion, to much is written about antibiotic treatment.

144 – reference should go as number

148 – two references should go in the same bracket

L154 – the beginning of sentence is the repetition of the previous sentence.

L177-179 – please provide a reference for this.

L184-185 – I suggest to delete this sentence.

L192-201 – to much of text regarding Regulation. Citing the Commission would be enough.

L209 – reference should be in brackets. Also, paper by Costa et al from 2010 is not in the reference list. Please carefully go through all references as some of them are not listed, in the text references are sometimes written as number in brackets and sometimes by surname of the author

214 – Tlak Gajger is the surname, Ivana is first name.

L218-219 – Is this research (ref 51 - and proportion of infected 218 house and forager worker honey bees [51]) refers to Nozevit research? If not I suggest to rewrite the sentence.

225 – reference

226 – reference

Reviewer 3 Report

Although the authors have a lot of information when they prepare review articles, it is difficult to gather the most important information. Another challenge is to present this information in an interesting review article. Nosematosis is a new disease among honey bees and causes serious damage to beekeeping. Scientists must work to solve the problem. The methods for treatment and control of N. ceranae must be appropriate to honey bees. The review articles are useful to systematize this knowledge and to search for new knowledge.

The authors of the submitted manuscript have managed to summarize a lot of information for the control of nosematosis. I recommend to authors to describe in a separate section the effect of plant extracts on nosematosis. There have been many new studies in this area in the last five years. In this new section it would be good to mention the research such as:

Shumkova, R.; Balkanska, R.; Hristov, P. The Herbal Supplements NOZEMAT HERB® and NOZEMAT HERB PLUS®: An Alternative Therapy for N. ceranae Infection and its Effects on Honey Bee Strength and Production Traits. Pathogens 2021, 10, 234. https://doi.org/10.3390/ pathogens10020234

Shumkova, R.; Balkanska, R.; Koynarski, T.; Hristov, P. Application of the Natural Products NOZEMAT HERB and NOZEMAT HERB PLUS Can Decrease Honey Bee Colonies Losses during the Winter. Diversity 2021, 13, 228. https:// doi.org/10.3390/d13060228

Some technical errors were found.

Line 84: because of the crucial role of the queen

Line 125: phytotherapeutics, essential oils

Line 142: regardless of the dose

Line 152: fumagillin

Line 201: phytotherapeutics

Line 203: the low risk for consumers as a contaminant of bee products

Line 214: amino acids

Line 259: methods are possible

Why from line 34 to line 43 the Latin names are not in Italic?
