Research on the Method of Temporary Prestressing to Regulate the Stress in the Section during the Construction of the Main Arch Ring of the Cantilever Cast Arch Bridge
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
In the paper the authors propose a computational control method for temporary prestressing tendons in the arch section.
The conclusions are well supported by the presented results. However, there are some minor issues that should be addressed prior to publication, listed below:
- The sentences are too long. It should be useful for the reader to check and edit the written English.
- Line 134: please explain this sentence: "neutral layer and neutral axis assumptions".
- Fig. 7: third rectangle. I think it should be "Matlab" not "Matable".

This is a good study on the method of temporary prestressing to regulate the tension in the section during the construction of the main arch ring of the cantilever cast arch bridge.
General comments: Never indicate above or below where the statement, figure and table are located on the paper. The reason for this is that these things can be moved to the next page during editing, etc. In section 4.2 this is clearly seen when the authors indicate the position of "...Figure 19 - Figure 22 below", but only Figure 19 is on the same page as the statement, the rest on the following page.
It is good if you can vary your citations and not just focus on the same place.
The English review is necessary for the readability of the paper.
Check the full meaning of the abbreviation throughout the essay, as many abbreviations were not given their full meaning at the beginning.
Summary: The main problem, objective and method were not clearly stated.
Introduction:
Page 4, line 87, clearly state the difference between the theoretical and actual loading of the said sample.
Section 2.1, is it possible to share the license for MATLAB and ANSYS used for this study?
Some of the results in certain sections show negative stresses. Why is this?
In section 5, the strain gauges were placed and adjusted at certain locations. However, there are no results for the strain?
Some of the results were not supported by other results.
Check format for the references. This is a good study on the method of temporary prestressing to regulate the tension in the section during the construction of the main arch ring of the cantilever cast arch bridge.

The paper presents a study on temporary prestressing tendons in the arch section of a reinforced concrete arch bridge, built by the cantilever method. An application of the developed and proposed method was applied to the Shatuo Special Bridge in Guizhou.
Thus, in general, the paper presents some interesting results and can be transformed into a paper worth publishing. However, several points need to be addressed before the paper can be accepted for publication.
In all, the information presented is useful and of interest to the readers of International Journal of Applied Sciences. However, several topics discussed in this review should be addressed. Comments below are subdivided into two main parts: (A) General comments and (B) Specific comments (by line number)
(A) GENERAL COMMENTS:
The word “bucking” should be substituted by “buckle” throughout the document.
In page 3, line 58-59, the authors state that “the tensile and compressive stresses in the top and bottom plates of the arch section change alternately”. Wouldn't the authors mean “flanges” or “slabs” instead of “plates”? This term should be replaced throughout the document (including figures).
In page 5, line 138, the authors state that “The arch ring section is straight instead of curved to ignore the effect of bending.” The tendons are supposed to be straight or curved? What is the value of the curvature of the centroid line of the section? Is this effect negligible?
In Figure 1, a bending moment Mp2 is represented. This bending moment is not defined in the text.
Equations should be introduced and referred in the text, throughout the document.
In Figures 2 and 3:
- spe and Ap shouldn't be spe(i+1) and Ap(i+1)?
- The height h of the section should be represented
- The Ms represented is not defined in the text
In page 6, line 181, the authors state that “the stresses at the upper and lower edges of ?+1 section can be calculated as follows.”. The equations (8) and (9) are for compressive and tensile stresses, respectively. Which equation is for upper and each one is for lower stresses?
Regarding equation 20, isn't the term referring to Ti+1 missing?
In page 9, lines 273-275, the authors state that “The zero-order optimization method is based on the idea of "limit approximation" and has limited accuracy of calculation results. The first-order optimization method is based on the idea of "limit approximation" and has limited accuracy”. Do both methods have limited accuracy? So, what is the advantage of first-order optimization method?
In page 9, lines 281, the authors use the term OPT. The authors should explain the meaning of this acronym.
In Figures 12 and 13 the layout of the prestressing tendons is too small and can hardly be seen. A larger and more detailed layout shall be presented. The authors must indicate the designation of each tendon and detail the active and dead anchorages of each one.
The cross-sections presented in Figure 14 should be identified in Figures 12 and 13.
In page 15, line 463, the authors use the term “stress control index”. This index should be defined.
In page 15, Table 3, there is a note indicating “Note: The number is the number of low-relaxation seven-strand steel strands with a single area of 140 mm2”. Do the authors mean “seven-wire steel strands with a nominal area of 140 mm2”? Does this number refer to the total number of strands in the cross-section? The authors should make this clear in the text.
The authors should indicate the considered prestressing force for tendon. For the shorter tendons the losses due to the draw-in of wedges must be considered since their importance in these cases.
The authors should present a list of notations.
(B) SPECIFIC COMMENTS:
1. Page 4, Line 84 – Consider changing “of buckling cable” to “of the buckle cable”.
2. Page 4, Lines 85 and 87 – Consider changing “of arch ring” to “of the arch ring”.
