Response to Reviewer 1 Comments

Dear Reviewer:

Thank you for your comments concerning our manuscript entitled “Research on Optical Fiber Current Sensor Based on FBG and Magnetostrictive Composite Materials” (ID: applsci-1045063). Those comments are all valuable and very helpful for revising and improving our paper, as well as the important guiding significance to our researches. We have studied comments carefully and have made correction which we hope meet with approval. The main corrections in the paper and the responds to the reviewer’s comments are as flowing:

Point 1: Give the definition of the unit Oe which is not a unit of the SI system.

Response: Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your suggestion is very useful to us. Oe is defined as dynes (dyn) per unit of magnetic charge. Converted to the international system of units, 1 Oe is equal to 1000/4π (≈79.5774715) A/m. We explain the definition of the unit Oe in this paper.

Point 2: Give the references of the equipment used (make and model) in Figure 6. Specify the acquisition frequency and the sampling frequency used on the measurement system.

Response: Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your suggestion is very useful to us. AC-band amplified spontaneous emission(ASE) source or a tunable laser (Agilent 81640B), combined with a 3 dB coupler, was used to illuminate the MC-FBG sensor via ports 1 and 2 of an optical circulator. The reflected wavelengths via ports 2 and 3 of the optical circulator were split by a 3 dB coupler and then measured by a 125 MHz photodetector (NewFocus 1811) or an optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) (Agilent 86140A) with a 0.1 nm resolution. The electromagnet provides a quasi-static magnetic field with a maximum amplitude of 146kA/m and a frequency of 1Hz. We have supplemented it in the corresponding part of the paper.

Point 3: Describe what the unit of "g" corresponds to (40g, 144g, ...)

Response: Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your suggestion is very useful to us. The unit of "g" corresponds to the mass of TD. TD mass is one of the important indexes of sensor cost. We have made modifications in the corresponding positions of this paper.

Point 4: In figure 8 specify what are the elements (with arrows in the figure)

Response: Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your suggestion is very useful to us. Figure 8 is composed of compression ring and giant magnetostrictive material. We have marked the elements in the figure with arrows. We have supplemented it in the corresponding part of the paper.

Point 5: Describe the properties of the FBGs used (pitch, grating length, brand, model, etc.)

Response: Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your suggestion is very useful to us. FBG is a kind of diffraction grating formed by periodically modulating the refractive index of fiber core in axial direction by a certain method, and it is a passive filter device. Grating fiber has the advantages of small size, low fusion loss, full compatibility with optical fiber, and embedding intelligent materials, and its resonant wavelength is sensitive to the changes of external environment such as temperature, strain, refractive index and concentration. According to the distribution of refractive index along the axial direction of the grating, the fiber grating written by ultraviolet can be divided into uniform fiber grating and non-uniform fiber grating. Uniform fiber Bragg grating (the period of refractive index change is generally 0.1mm) and uniform long-period fiber grating (the period of refractive index change is generally 100mm).

Point 6: Add a summary table in the article summarizing the results obtained from the articles studied with the key parameters (measurement range in deformation, measurement range in kA/m, maximum acquisition frequency, advantages, disadvantages)

Response: Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your suggestion is very useful to us. We have added a summary table in the paper with the key parameters. We have supplemented it in the corresponding part of the paper, as shown in table 1.

Point 7: Check throughout the manuscript that there is a space between the value and its unit (this is not the case everywhere)

Response: Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your suggestion is very useful to us. According to your requirements, we have modified the corresponding parts of this paper.

Point 8: Line 418: replace Mpa by MPa (check in the article)

Response: Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your suggestion is very useful to us. According to your requirements, we have modified the corresponding parts of this paper.

Point 9: Line 536: replace KA/m by kA/m (check in the article)

Response: Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your suggestion is very useful to us. According to your requirements, we have modified the corresponding parts of this paper.

Special thanks to you for your good comments.

We tried our best to improve the manuscript and made some changes in the manuscript. These changes will not influence the content and framework of the paper.

We appreciate for your warm work earnestly, and hope that the correction will meet with approval. Once again, thank you very much for your comments and suggestions.

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors offers a comprehensive review on the optical fiber current sensor based on FBG and magnetostrictive composite. The paper is well-written and easy to follow. The contents are comprehensive. Improvement should be made to the current version of the review paper.

1) The title should be modified to avoid any misinterpretation. This is a review paper, not a research paper. I would suggest the title take the form of 'Review on xxx'. All other related contents should also be modified. Also, highlight the reviewed contents and the contribution of the current paper in the abstract.

2) Paragraph 2 in Introduction, provide literatures for the methods mentioned of optical fiber current sensors.

3) Section 3, the title of 'research/study on xxx' should be modified, again, this is not a research paper.

4) The language should be proofread by English professionals.

Response: Thank you very much for your suggestion. Your suggestion is very useful to us. At the beginning of the text paper, this paper indicates that the type of this paper is a review paper.

Firstly, this paper introduces the working principle of the sensor. Secondly, this paper summarizes how to improve the performance of the sensor from the following two aspects: the structure of the sensor and the preparation of magnetostrictive composite materials. The structure of the sensor is mainly studied from the shape of magnetostrictive composite material, the shape of magnetic permeable material and the number of permanent magnets. The improvement of magnetostrictive composites is mainly studied from the aspects of particle volume fraction, binder type, particle size, orientation magnetic field and molding pressure. These conclusions points out the direction for the improvement of the sensor. According to your requirements, we have modified the corresponding parts of this paper.

Point 2: Paragraph 2 in Introduction, provide literatures for the methods mentioned of optical fiber current sensors.
