Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The energy focuses on the idea of Energy Commitment (EC) with the purpose of setting a pattern for the use of energy carriers to supply energy demand, considering technical and economic constraints. The authors considered that EC is a constrained optimization problem that can be solved by using optimization methods. This study suggests the Following Optimization Algorithm (FOA) to solve the EC problem to achieve technical and economic benefits with the minimization energy supply costs for total study period is considered as objective function.

The paper is quite interesting, however, there are several issues which must be improved and corrected.

  1. In the abstract, please also mention the quantitative results, not only qualitative explanation. Therefore, the readers can understand and justify accurately the content of the research.
  2. The novelty of the paper needs to be clearly define, including the difference with other previous works. It also includes the problems faced by other previous works, leading to the importance of the current study.
  3. In the proposed EC, did you also consider the respond time required by each energy storage/carriers ?
  4. Detailed explanation and difference of EC with other methods are required. It seems that the proposed EC is very wide, resulting in unclear optimization of the target.
  5. Can also you show the effect of EC to the emitted CO2? Or do you have any objective function to minimize CO2?
  6. To improve the correlation and relationship of the study with the previous works and available literature, additional references are required. Below are several works which are strongly recommended.

Reviewer 2 Report

The overall research presented in the paper is dealing with a complex issue of optimizing the supply from a different energy carriers. Although very complex, the problem is simplified in many ways, neglecting a lot of important issues that exist in today's world, like the spot market,  wholesale market, retail business, role of infrastructure operators vs energy producers and suppliers. Those concerns should be clarified by the authors, preferably in the article.

Sectors are the systems consisting from a lot of various subsystems and actors, not always acting in the same way. The authors should think how to include a renewables and multi-energy storage systems into their research. This way some more novelty should be implemented into the presented problem.
