Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This article takes a closer look at the reality of cultural landscapes in a region of China. Upon review, there are two serious objections to be raised.

1) The article has a poor theoretical background. It does not define what a vernacular landscape is, nor what the security of a cultural landscape consists of. Are there any references to this concept in the international scientific literature, and what are we referring to? The manuscript also does not start from hypotheses or research questions... according to what has been proposed in other studies, what is the work really going to contribute to the scientific community?

Another question is the justification of the territory: why is this area of China chosen, if there are many territories in China with the same problems and dynamics (urban pressure, climate change, etc.)?

2) The maps presented are of very poor quality. Figure 1 has low resolution and there is no correspondence with what is enlarged. In figure 3 there is no location map for reference. In Figure 4, there are illegible maps (not visible at the scale used), and in Table 7, the maps are illegible.

I understand that if these serious shortcomings are resolved, the article could be evaluated.

Kind regards

This paper analyzed transregional vernacular cultural landscape security pattern with the Nature-Culture Lenses based on a case study of Yangtze River Delta Demonstration Area, China. The author followed three steps to identify key protected areas and develop a zoning and grading conservation strategy toolkit. The author has made innovations in the method, which is instructive to the reality. I believe that this paper will bring an additional insight regarding the issue discussed in paper.

The paper has a weak introduction part which gives too many wordings to introduce the Yangtze River Delta Demonstration Areai, and too few wordings to what is unique and innovative in this paper. In addition, I have no other problems with this article.
