Situating China in the Global Effort to Combat Desertification
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Dear Authors,
It was exciting to read the history of combat against desertification.
Besides improving Figure 3 for better readability, I cannot suggest any other changes.

Reviewer 2 Report
The authors have presented a comprehensive review of the evolution of how desertification is addressed at the international level, led by the UNCCD, and at a country level: China. This detailed review showed the place of China in the global efforts to tackle desertification, comparing and contrasting with efforts at the international scale, in terms of the science, policy, and socio-economic considerations.
This work provides valuable insights and recommendations that will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in this field. The reviewer found this manuscript easy to read and follow, it is well structured, with adequate details and citation of extensive/relevant literature.

Author Response
Dear Reviewer,
Thank you very much for the comments and suggestions.
We have made some changes in the Abstract [line 19-20] and Introduction [line 56], highlighting why the differences in the approaches and why they are important. Regarding your suggestion to move rows 595-608 which describes the latest developments and context changes in China's approach to addressing desertification, given these aspects feature in what is now Table 2, we think the narrative flows better by leaving them where they are. The review is trying to focus on reflecting the developments of both "bottom-up" and "top-down" at a broader scale, so it comes as one of the most recent developments in terms of China's efforts.
Based on your suggestion, we have turned Figure 3 into Table 2 for clear and easy communication. Thank you again for your positive feedback and suggestion.
Sincerely,
Authors
