Microplastic and Microfibre Pollution in Greenland Surface Ice: A Preliminary Study
Highlights
- A preliminary survey was conducted by collecting samples during the Extreme E expedition.
- The Greenland surface ice samples were found to be polluted by microplastics and microfibres.
- Cellulosic microfibres are more abundant than synthetic ones.
- Microplastics reach remote regions via various sources of pollution.
- Textile-derived fibres appear to be a major source of microfibres.
- Microfibres on ice may affect albedo and accelerate melting.
