Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article investigates the topic of great importance for environmental protection. It contains valuable data that could be of use to researchers in the field. However, there are issues that must be addressed before publishing:

1. Line 93: name the devices for LC-MS and FTIR, as well as the measurement parameters

2. Line 144: adjust reference in accordance with MDPI

3. In 3.2 Effect of alkaline hydrolysis time on COD removal, compare the results with the literature and emphasize the advantage of your method

4. Line 209: DCM is a dangerous compound, how can one control and ensure its transformation in real processes?

5. Line: Mass spectra figure missing, should be included to support statements in the discussion.

6. FTIR must include the rest of the spectrum, especially in the region where a difference in substituted benzene ring could be identified. Spectrum should be standard 400-4000 cm-1

7. Line 278: Support the statement of pore and particle size with morphological characterization

Wastewater from the petroleum industry is problematic to remove and degrade, especially phenolic compounds. This makes the topic of the paper interesting and valuable. The authors should improve the presentation of the results.

The methods of the tests carried out should be presented in more detail.

The equations of the kinetic models are presented in the “material and methods” chapter, but the model fitting results are not presented, please add this information. In turn, the composition of raw sewage and after each test should be presented in a table, which will facilitate the reading of changes in the content of the analyzed compounds. The presentation of similar research can make the paper more valuable.

Information in the text below figure 4 is not presented in this figure, please change the description. Similarly, figure 5 does not show the relationship described in the text, please correct it.

- Figure 5. Please add the units on the axes

- Chapters cannot start with numbers, please change the order.
