Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors of the evaluated manuscript review the potential of digitalization in the urban water sector and propose several practical examples to accelerate the transition towards economic, social and environmental sustainability. An important aspect to highlight is that from the perspective of the circular economy, these proposals for taking advantage of existing urban infrastructures are capable of producing a large amount of resources that, if properly managed, can reduce the pressure on conventional natural resources. In this sense, the referee agrees with the authors that digitization could allow the integration of the different market agents, thus optimizing the supply and demand of these resources and, therefore, advancing in the practical application of the circular economy.

However, my main concern about the manuscript is that a methodology that has been followed to structure the literature review that guarantees the analysis of the state-of-the-art of the subject is not presented.

Therefore, I strongly suggest writing a section that describes the methodology followed to structure the state-of-the-art on potential of digitalization in the urban water cycle. In addition, I would ask the authors to establish several specific objectives derived from the main one. This strategy could give them the opportunity to be more precise when writing the discussion and conclusions.
