Phosphate-Mediated Regulation of Intracellular Calcium Dynamics
Highlights
- Intracellular phosphate levels actively modulate calcium release, uptake, and distribution within the cell.
- Extracellular phosphate levels critically regulate calcium influx and overall cellular calcium handling.
- Tight crosstalk between phosphate and calcium implies that dysregulation of phosphate homeostasis may contribute to calcium-related pathologies, including arrhythmia, vascular calcification, muscle weakness, renal dysfunction, and bone disease.
- Therapeutic restoration of phosphate balance may improve the outcome of calcium-dependent pathologies.
