Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article is well written and the topic is of great interest in the field. Nevertheless, while the comparison between the cultivars is well explained and discussed, the comparison between the different years is not as well defined.

First of all, it should be added, even if in Supporting Information, the variation between the years separately for each cultivar, so to observe if some cultivars are more affected by seasonality than others. Moreover, information regarding the climate changes between the years should be provided to the readers.

Another facet to be addressed is the amount of kernel presenting occult damage (i.e. black spots on the kernel and not on the hull). This information is of great important for confectionery industries.

When these points are addressed, the article could be published.

Authors agree with the Reviewer’s suggestion and the additional data was added concerning cultivars variation between the years (Supplementary Data 2) as well as the description in the manuscript (Lines: 205-208).

Information regarding the climate changes between the years is provided to the manuscript (Table: Supplementary Data 1) and description in Line: 76 – 84.

Following the Reviewer’s suggestion relevant references have been added (New Table 1 as well as description (New line: 95-98, 168-176, 272-278)
