Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This review presents a good balance between the  scope and volume of the selected material. Perhaps, with somewhat visible underrepresentation of the most recent publications.

Minor comments and corrections:

The quality (resolution) of mathematical formulae in text and figures was poor in my copy of the manuscript but it’s possibly a format-conversion problem. See e.g. Eqn. 13 or Figure 6.

Typo in Table 1 “Tarc” should read “Talc”

Magneto-Clapeyron formula, Eqn. 14: I suggest writing it in a more general form, with delta(susceptibility change upon phase transition). The form used in text is correct in the special case only.

p.5 line 188         it should be explained that the viscous medium dampens the oscillations but is not necessary for the orientation

p.3 line 105         typo in “levitated”, should be “levitating”

p.4 line 109         repetition of word “levitating” unnecessary

p.5 line 147         lack of dot at the end of the sentence

p.14 lines 392-394 the sentence is somewhat unclear, I suggest using “structures with cylindrical and lamellar morphology”

p.14 lines 397 the sentence unclear and should be rephrased so to not imply that a low viscosity rotatable environment is necessary for the alignment

Reviewer 2 Report

The Manuscript entitled “Magnetic processing of diamagnetic materials”, is an interesting work and contains information useful for the scientific community. However, some points should be attended before to consider to their publication.

Page 1, line 39-41. In the paragraph “Most magnetic effects can be understood in terms of the magnetic energy. The magnetic energy of diamagnetic materials is usually very small and hence may be difficult to disentangle from other energies such as thermal, gravitational, electric, and elastic.” I suggest add the corresponding references for each energies mentioned such as thermal [REF], gravitational [REF], electric, and elastic [REF].

Page 2. In the following paragraphs, please add the corresponding references that support the information.

  • 50 where is the magnetic permeability of vacuum. The magnetic energy of diamagnetic materials… Brownian motion by applying a magnetic field of 10 T”
  • Figure 1 shows the magnetic energy for various values of … which electromagnets and permanent magnets readily supply.
  • However, fillers, nucleating agents, and other materials… polymers and microphase separation of block copolymers—are susceptible to and influenced by the magnetic field.

Page 3. In the following paragraph “The intensity of the gradient term….that is sufficient to levitate diamagnetic particles. Please add the corresponding references that support the information.

Page 6. Please add the corresponding references in the paragraph “The magnetic anisotropy of a molecule arises from the magnetic anisotropy…for double bonds such as C=C and C=O is positive. Aromatic rings have a smaller susceptibility in the direction perpendicular to the ring.

Page 8. According to the relevance of the table 1. I suggest improve the table discussion, descrive the synthesis type, reaction conditions and the fiber composition. In addition please mention the affect that present the materials used in the orientation direction.

Page 11. Please add the corresponding references in the paragraph “Applying a magnetic field enhances…magnetic force acts as a liquid O-ring. Thus, magnetic fluids can be used as a seal.

Page 13. Page 342-345. I suggest add a briefly explain of the crystallization methods and their effects in the orientation direction.

Table 1. Please add the crystal system conditions.

Page 14. Please consider add a table focused in applications of the magnetic particles and discuss their advantages or disadvantages in their use.

Reviewer 3 Report

Paper presents valuable review, however, it should be re-organized to clearly present the idea of review. Please start from general view (preferable with the table or bullets) clearly depicting the scope of review. At this moment the paper seems to be some kind of review for the thesis. However, review for the journal should be presented is slightly different way.

Summary also have to be developed. Please summarize the review clearly indicating the outlook for the future.

In addition:

  1. Figure 3 is not suitable for the scientific paper. Please clearly present the size of spheres, preferably with the scale.
  2. Figure 5 is not clear. Please explain the Euler angles with proper captions.
  3. Quality of figure 6 is not sufficient. Is this figure necessary? Please re-draw or remove.
