Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The authors here report an important review of the Role and applications of small organic and inorganic molecules as catalysts for the conversion biomass to  the production of furfural (FA), 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF), and 5-(chloromethyl)furfural (CMF)

the authors report most of the methods that used are based on small molecules such as ionic liquids, the review is suitable for publishing in catalysts after minor revisions

1. The drawing of compounds and schemes needs touse style of science of synthesis in chemdraw to be more obvious

2. there are important book that should be added as a reference in this review is Ionic Liquids for Pretreatment of Biomass for the Publisher ‏ : ‎ LAP Lambert Academic Publishing (March 11, 2019)

Author Response

Reviewer 1:

The authors report most of the methods that used are based on small molecules such as ionic liquids, the review is suitable for publishing in catalysts after minor revisions.

The authors thank the reviewer 1 for such an opinion and for valuable comments (given below).

Addressed comments:

  1. The drawing of compounds and schemes needs touse style of science of synthesis in chemdraw to be more obvious

The drawing of compounds and schemes has been improved/standardized.

  1. There are important book that should be added as a reference in this review is Ionic Liquids for Pretreatment of Biomass for the Publisher ‏ : ‎ LAP Lambert Academic Publishing (March 11, 2019)

The mentioned book has been cited and it has been added as the reference.

Reviewer 2 Report

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The authors were written a review about small molecules effective for conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to furfural and its derivatives. The review is very well written. I recommend its publication in Catalysts however, a minor revision is necessary before its acceptance.

Comments include the following

General:

1.           The authors should write some senteces about lignin utilization (after page 2 line 48).

2.           Table 4 should be insert after page 6 line 303.

3.       Correct the following sentence: CaCl2·6H2O or MgCl2·6H2O (page 7 line 355).

4.      Correct the following sentence: “Luo et al. tested aqueous solutions of γ-valerolactone GVL at 160 °C…” (page 8 line 392).

5.      Correct the following sentence: “during the frst stage…” (page 9 line 434).

6.      The authors should investigate the articles of Prof. István Tamás Horváth. The authors will find an article for each chapter.

For example:

Chem. Commun., 2012, 48, 5850–5852

 ACS Catal. 2014, 4, 1470−1477

ACS Sustainable Chem. Eng. 2023, 11, 15350−15363

Author Response

Reviewer 2

The authors were written a review about small molecules effective for conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to furfural and its derivatives. The review is very well written. I recommend its publication in Catalysts, however, a minor revision is necessary before its acceptance.

The authors thank the reviewer 2 for such an opinion and for valuable comments (given below).

  1. The authors should write some senteces about lignin utilization (after page 2 line 48).

The text dealing with possible lignin utilization has been added.

  1. Table 4 should be insert after page 6 line 303.

The position of Table 4 has been changed according to the oppinion of reviewer.

  1. Correct the following sentence: CaCl2·6H2O or MgCl2·6H2O (page 7 line 355).

The mentioned sentence has been corrected.

  1. Correct the following sentence: “Luo et al. tested aqueous solutions of γ-valerolactone GVL at 160 °C…” (page 8 line 392).

The mentioned sentence has been corrected.

  1. Correct the following sentence: “during the frststage…” (page 9 line 434).

The mentioned sentence has been corrected.

  1. The authors should investigate the articles of Prof. István Tamás Horváth. The authors will find an article for each chapter.

Thank you very much for your notice and inspiration. The cited articles were found using key words and Web of Science database.

Naturally, the articles mentioned by reviewer 2 has been added and mentioned in actual version of our manuscript except of article “Chem. Commun., 2012, 48, 5850–5852“, which has not been found by WOS in combination with the name of Prof. I.T. Horváth.
