Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors have provided a very through review of the recent development in the production strategies of some important biochemical intermediates from  biomass derived compounds such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural. Today, one of the major challenges in our society is to develop renewable and sustainable energy while considering the environmental impacts. With the ever-increasing demands of energy, the potential of new fuels and chemicals form renewable sources such as biomass that are both readily synthesized and environmentally friendly will only increase. This manuscript is highly informative for the recent advances  in this area. This manuscript is very well written and should be published in the current form.

Reviewer 2 Report

This review highlights the various catalytic production processes of biochemical commodities such as alcohols, maleic anhydride and 5-alkoxymethylfuran from furfurals. This review is written well but needs improvement at some places. Authors have used lots of acronyms (more than needed). I would suggest adding them at the end of the article so that it will be convenient for the readers, and try to avoid where they can.

Replace word “chapter” with “review”

I don’t see any other references from year 2019-2020 except reference 1. I wonder if no work was published during these 2 years??
