Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity and Protective Role of Dietary Polyphenols
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The aim of the paper "Non-celiac gluten sensitivity and protective role of dietary polyphenols" was to discuss and review the recent scientific literature on the role of dietary polyphenols on the toxic effects of gluten.
In my opinion, the paper is well written and touches an important and scientifically interesting problem.
The authors discussed in detail and comprehensively epidemiology, diagnostic criteria and pathophysiology of gluten sensitivity.
The potential targets of polyphenols are reviewed in detail, including the bioavailability of gluten peptides, disturbance of intestinal epithelial barrier function, intestinal immune response, oxidative stress and inflammation, and dysbiosis.
The article also covers the use of polyphenols as possible nutritional strategies to help counteract the toxic effects of gluten, potentially leading to improved quality of life for patients.
After a detailed discussion of the topic and a review of the current scientific literature, the authors have drawn accurate and relevant conclusions.
Moreover, they included 3 well drafted figures as illustrations into the article.
The impressive number of cited literature items (241) is worth mentioning. It should be emphasized that most of the cited literature was published in recent years and reflects the current state of knowledge presented in the article.
Reviewer 2 Report
The authors reported an updated review of the effects of polyphenols as possible dietary strategies to counteract the toxic effects of gluten. Supposed molecular mechanisms of action of polyphenols in reducing the symptoms of non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) are also discussed. No comprehensive reports on the effects of polyphenols on NCGS. Therefore, I find this review manuscript timely and surely interesting for readers. Overall, it is a very nicely reported study with interesting results.
