Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This research comparatively investigated the bearing performance and environmental impact of pipe piles. Revisions of the following are suggested before publication:

- More references regarding environmental impact research should be added. Generally, how is environmental impact be quantified and this should eventually justify the authors' adopted calculation method.

- The term PHC should be elaborated. It is not clear which specific type of pile it refers to.

- Justification for only considering PHC pile as reference to VDP should be added. In introduction, the authors mentioned multiple types of piles, why they are not considered in the paper?

Author Response

This research comparatively investigated the bearing performance and environmental impact of pipe piles. Revisions of the following are suggested before publication:

  1. More references regarding environmental impact research should be added. Generally, how is environmental impact be quantified and this should eventually justify the authors' adopted calculation method.

Reply: Relevant references have been added and the quantification process of carbon emission factors has been supplemented.

  1. The term PHC should be elaborated. It is not clear which specific type of pile it refers to.

Reply: Added in the article. PHC pile refers to Pressed high strength concrete pile, which is the most common pipe pile in Chinese pile foundation engineering. Due to its simple production, strong load capacity, small settlement deformation, and high efficiency, it has been widely used in the field of construction engineering.

  1. Justification for only considering PHC pile as reference to VDP should be added. In introduction, the authors mentioned multiple types of piles, why they are not considered in the paper?

Reply: This experiment is based on actual engineering, where PHC piles are the most common pile foundation and are widely used in China. Most comparative studies of new types of piles use PHC piles as a reference. The other new types of piles mentioned in the introduction require approval from relevant examination departments, making it difficult to manufacture and use non patented piles in this experiment. And those piles are mostly laboratory tests, with few on-site tests. The laboratory test research results on other types of piles and vacuum drainage pipe piles are reflected in the following papers. Our previous paper compared the laboratory test results of other types of piles and vacuum drainage pipe piles:

Dear authors of the manuscript entitled “Bearing capacity and sustainable construction of vacuum drainage pipe pile”,

I have carefully reviewed your manuscript. The topic of research seems fit with the scope of the journal. However, you are required to address the following issues before considering the manuscript for publication:

1- There are some typing and grammar mistakes. Hence, I suggest reviewing the entire manuscript by a professional editing service.

2- Please make sure that the research title and keywords have been written according to the journal style.

3- The abstract section should be one paragraph up to 250 words, summarizes the major aspects of the entire paper in a prescribed sequence that includes: 1) the research problem; 2) the overall purpose of the research; 3) the methodology and/or data used; 4) the significant findings or the important outcomes of the research. Please reconstruct the abstract accordingly.

4- The introduction section is short. Please write a comprehensive introduction

5- Some symbols need to be defined on the abbreviations paragraph or notations list. Please consider revision.

6- The references are not in the same format. Please use a proper tool for citation (e.g. Endnote or Mendeley) and follow the journal style.

7- Please download the citation from original source (e.g., science direct, springer, …etc.). Do not simply use google scholar. Moreover, it is strongly suggested to include the DOI of all references.

Therefore, the reviewer believes that the manuscript is not suitable for publication in its present form due to the above-mentioned issues.

Bearing capacity and sustainable construction of vacuum drain age pipe pile

The following are the few suggestions which helps to improve the quality of the manuscript.

1.      The introduction part required more latest literature study associated with vacuum drain age pipe pile.

2.       It is better to represent section 3.2 test process in flow chart along with given description.

3.       The reason for surface displacement is widely elaborated with technical evidence from experimental results in section 3.1.1. Also, if possible, add previous latest literature as supporting evidence.

4.       In section 3.1.3 for 2m depth for all charts VDP pile having more resistance compared to PHC pile justify the reason with proper technical evidence. Elaborated technical description will helps to improve the technical quality.

5.       In figure-9 there are three charts, it is advised to name each chart separately & discuss in detail what are the take outs from those charts in detail.

6.       In conclusion section technical content for each section must be improved along with results justification.

7.       Reference section must be improved by adding quality latest research findings in VDP in introduction as well as at required sections.

The following are the few suggestions which helps to improve the quality of the manuscript.

  1. The introduction part required more latest literature study associated with vacuum drainage pipe pile.

Reply: VDP pile is a new type of pile created by our team, and relevant research has been cited in the article. And latest literature study of other new types of piles has been added.

  1. It is better to represent section 3.2 test process in flow chart along with given description.

Reply: The flowchart and related descriptions, as well as the schematic diagram of the testing device, have been added.

  1. The reason for surface displacement is widely elaborated with technical evidence from experimental results in section 3.1.1. Also, if possible, add previous latest literature as supporting evidence.

Reply: The surface displacement of VDP piles has not been studied by others, so literature on surface displacement of ordinary pipe piles has been supplemented as supporting evidence.

  1. In section 3.1.3 for 2m depth for all charts VDP pile having more resistance compared to PHC pile justify the reason with proper technical evidence. Elaborated technical description will helps to improve the technical quality.

Reply: The explanation has been added in section 3.1.3.

  1. In figure-9 there are three charts, it is advised to name each chart separately & discuss in detail what are the take outs from those charts in detail.

Reply: Each graph has been named separately and discussed in more detail.

  1. In conclusion section technical content for each section must be improved along with results justification.

Reply: Conclusion has been modified.

  1. Reference section must be improved by adding quality latest research findings in VDP in introduction as well as at required sections.

Reply: Relevant references have been added.
