Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear

I was very pleased to read the research under the title (Microalgae as a Promising and Sustainable Source of Renewable Energy: A Comprehensive Review), which included a historical and logical account of the use of algae in the production of biofuel. This is the problem that haunts the whole world in finding sources of renewable energy that are clean and environmentally friendly. The secret in this review was logical and sound. Indeed, I congratulate those in charge of this work for their huge effort to produce such a review.

The article entitled “microalgae as a promising and sustainable source of renewable energy: a comprehensive review”. I think that the work presents relevant information, however I think that some adjustments should be made, as shown below.

I think that in the summary you should quote values or data so that the article is more interesting, the way it is done does not call the reader's attention.

In the introduction, values such as:

Amount of oil consumed per day or per year and the amounts of polluting gases such as CO2, NOx and SOx that are released into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels and, if possible, particulate matter and its effects on health and on the different ecosystems .

Comparisons between the fatty acid composition of vegetable oils and the different oils obtained from different species of microalgae and why the use of this type of oil is more advantageous in terms of fatty acid composition.

In addition, values based on the projection of biodiesel production worldwide using microalgae should be presented, the amount of CO2 that will be fixed in the oil production process and a comparison between the amounts of CO2 that will be released with fossil fuels and with biodiesel. “like a carbon balance”

The document must present a swot matrix (strengths – weaknesses-opportunities-threats. In addition, I think it is extremely important to carry out a technical-economic analysis between the different technologies presented in the document.

Finally the conclusion must also be adjusted.

Thank you very much.

Title: Microalgae as a Promising and Sustainable Source of Renewable Energy: A Comprehensive Review

Summary: This comprehensive review explores the potential of microalgae as a reliable and sustainable source of biofuel for a greener future. Overall, this review serves as a valuable resource for identifying, developing, and harnessing the potential of microalgae as a promising biofuel source. The present review is well constructed but the novelty of the work needs to be highlighted.

Review comments:

1.     Title: The title is too general, on Google search there are several articles with similar kinds of titles. I suggest authors reconstruct the title.

2.     Abstract: This section needs to be properly summarized with the review highlights.

3.     I suggest authors provide a schematic graphical abstract for a better understanding of the concept of review.

4.     Keywords: Avoid the same keywords from the title.

5.     Introduction: This section needs to be elaborated in adherence with the title and scope of the review. There are several kinds of literature available for enhancement of this section. Following published literature might be helpful in the improvements such as; Effect of plant hormones on the production of biomass and lipid extraction for biodiesel production from microalgae Chlorella sp. The Journal of Microbiology, Biotechnology and Food Sciences, 9(4), 671. And ; Microalgae cultivation in wastewater effluent from tilapia culture pond for enhanced bioethanol production. Water Science and Technology, 84(10-11), 2686-2694. And;  A selective microalgae strain for biodiesel production in relation to higher lipid profile. Maejo International Journal of Energy and Environmental Communication, 1(1), 8-14.

6.     The novelty of the work needs to be highlighted and the objectives of the work need to be extensively defined. Authors mentioned the novelty which is not quite satisfying as there are a number of literature available with the same work. I recommend authors include innovative sessions to keep the novelty.

7.     More detailed comparative tables need to be added compared with the available literature related to the MFCs.

8.     Section 5 Photosynthesis in Microalgae Cells: Harnessing Light Energy: Need to be elaborated.

9.     Figure 6 is too general and can be omitted or presented in better ways.

10.  Section 14: The potential applications can be shown in a flowchart or in the pictorial representation.

11.  Conclusion: This section needs to be summarized, authors can do it in a few lines or 1 paragraph with 250 words.

12.  Typos or grammatical mistakes need to be checked; the species names must be in italics.
