Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article, entitled “Development-Induced Impacts on the Livelihoods of local communities: The Case of Bole Lemi industry Park, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia”, is very interesting, and it deals with a very iportant topic.

This study analyses the opinions and perspectives of the heads of the relocated households on the impact of the Bole Lemi Industrial Park in Addis Ababa on their living conditions and livelihoods. The study also investigates the extent to which the income of farm households was determined by the factors examined, such as gender, age or education level, before the industrial park development in 2012 and after the development in 2020.

The article draws attention to the fact that, in addition to the obvious and often-mentioned advantages of industrialisation and the development of industrial parks, there are also disadvantages, such as the crowding-out effect of development or the negative transformation of the environment and the social and economic fabric of the locality or the region.

The authors rightly draw attention to the need for careful and comprehensive development policies and activities that take account of social, economic and environmental considerations.

The topic of the study is relevant and important. It provides valuable information on the medium to long-term impacts of displacement caused by the development of the Bole Lemi Industrial Park in Addis Ababa.

In order to make the title more consistent with the content, I suggest that the title should indicate that the article refers to the displaced community. My suggestions for the title:

Development-Induced Impacts on the Livelihoods of displaced communities: The Case of Bole Lemi industry Park, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Impacts of development-induced displacement on the Livelihoods of affected communities: The Case of Bole Lemi industry Park, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Overall, the study is well-written. Methodology appropriate and explained detailed enough. It puts the topic well in context, points out the links, the recommendations are in sync with the results, they are forward-looking and certainly worthy of consideration.

I would like to recommend this paper to be published.

Reviewer 3 Report

This study was conducted in the Bole Lemi area on the outskirts of Addis Ababa, using survey data to explore the perceptions and attitudes of farming communities. The study examines various factors that influence the perception of these displaced farming communities towards the development of industrial parks, including gender, education level, family size, marital status, ethnic group, and more. The highlights the lack of balance between industrial development in the area and the interests of the local farming communities, thereby failing to ensure their sustainable livelihoods. A comprehensive approach to industrial development, considering social factors and economic considerations, is crucial for displaced communities.. This study recommends for upcoming developments, eco-industrial processes should be considered to enhance sustainable development, promoting economic growth, reducing environmental impact, and benefiting displaced communities. A comprehensive, participatory approach to industrial park development is essential for sustainable, equitable economic growth while safeguarding local communities.

This is valuable work. It could be published after minor revisions as below.
