Does Green Finance Promote Export Sophistication? An Analysis of the Moderating Effect Based on Green Taxes
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
This paper is well crafted and technically correct. It is an empirical exercise performed with standard regression techniques. The problem of this article, as well as many similar articles, is the heavy use of indicators and variables that are poorly defined. Take for example GF. What does it mean? How is it defined? We cannot even say that it is an abstract variable defined implicitly by a theory because it appears only in a regeression. The general feeling is that these variables state the obvious.
Anyway, placing this article in the context of other similar articles I would say it deserve publication. It is a qualitative narrative that reinforces some intuitive results. From a truly scientific point of view the credibility of the article is low. Just imagine that I want to repeat the calculations: no way!!!

This paper looks at the influence of green finance and green policies on export focused industries in China. The authors did a fine job of generating a research question and hypotheses from the academic literature. I found their methods and models to be well designed and logically following the academic literature and their hypotheses. The conclusions adequately tie their results back to their hypotheses and the academic literature.
My main concern with the paper is editorial. The paper needs a significant proofread for grammar, style, and usage. There are significant grammar errors throughout the paper. Especially as it relates to article use. At times, I struggled to understand the message the authors were trying to convey. I would strongly encourage the authors to address the quality of writing in the paper before resubmitting.
Thank you for the opportunity to review your paper. I think the threshold model is especially insightful, as it clearly shows that green investment improves as quality of industrial development increases. I learned a lot from your article. Best of luck in your future research.
There are significant issues related to the quality of the English language in the paper. Article use is probably the most significant issue. Also, the third sentence of your abstract (line 13-21) is a significant run on. There are numerous issues throughout the paper. I would suggest having an English speaker proofread your manuscript to help.

General note: The article is interesting and worth publishing. Below are some suggestions on how it could be improved.
What – in my opinion – is missing, it is a description of an environmental view – how this improvements of export technology complexity affects an environment (if we produce better tools destroying the environment surrounding us, does it make sense?), it appears finally at point 2.2.3. with H4 but not strictly emphasized. The question is whether together with changes in production we can observe an addition value for environment of the country (China). Is an environment it better protected now?
Please find below more precise remarks following number of the line:
38: is it reasonable an assumption about trade growth rate to increase? – if you compare the value, it shows still a huge increase. An idea of greening the markets should show rather limiting the consumption (and trade) because of the Earth limits. This is why a movement from quantity to quality is reasonable.
120: While authors want to “explore the impact of green finance on export sophistication” it would be suitable to define how Authors understand an idea of green finance, There are some publications that show how green finance could be understood and which definition is assumed by Authors.
304: formula (6): is not clear in that form of presentation
377: Table 3 – a regression analysis requires several assumption considering normality of all variables (to be multivariate normal). The article misses this analysis.
419: before an analysis of regional improvement is checked, there is a need to check a normality of variables (now number of data is smaller). Lack of normality influences results and implications.
