Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In this paper authors developed a systematic approach to the assessment of living labs, by considering their functioning and how they contribute to sustainability transitions. Three Living Labs focused on three different topics were deeply evaluated with the aim to develop a framework concerning the key aspects and dynamics of living labs need to be assessed to understand how a living lab is functioning and contributing to relevant wider transitions to sustainability.  The topic is interesting and well structure. In my opinion, the article is very interesting and deserves to be published.

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors present a well-written paper that explores the contribution of living labs to transitional social challenges. As an active member of a Living Lab, I found the article an interesting assessment of the concept. I would, therefore, suggest only two minor modifications to the manuscript:

1) The review on available literature is already present in the introduction segment. However, it seems that a slightly more thorough review will enhance the understanding of the motivation behind your research.

2) Perhaps the paper would benefit from a more detailed explanation on the benefits of Living Lab approaches in creating a synergy between academia, businesses and policy-makers.

3) It would be beneficial to add a paragraph describing the areas of focus of existing living labs and how they align with the challenges of the sustainable transition we are facing.

Reviewer 3 Report

This article provides important perspectives on assessing Living Labs and programs like them.  The authors developed a framework for assessment using rigorous approaches, which emerged from an ethnographic study of three case studies.  In general, the background and organization of their research and presentation of their findings are well-organized and clear as to understand how the framework evolved and is flexible enough for application at multiple stages of Living Labs, etc.  However, I think there are some sections missing key definitions and needing better organization of text, figures, and tables for the reader.  I present some minor suggestions in an attached word document for your consideration.
