Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors

The manuscript is well written and organized. However, a framework with a 3R approach is not new to circular economy thinking. A large number of theories have developed the state of the art for more than 3Rs.

The sample used is too small, not giving reliability to the research. The study presents a limited case study based on a single organization, sounding like a case of marketing.

I recommend extending the sample, extending the state of the art and submitting again in the future.

Best regards,

As you recommend and according the conclusions from this manuscript, we answer your questions:

First, we indicate that all strategies perceived by the stakeholders is not present in all strategies and is not perceived by all stakeholders equally.

Second, we indicate the theoretical contribution to the framework of the CE strategies is refered to the social implications identified in this study.

Third, we indicate the managerial implications.

Also, we review the drafting of the conclusions and the discussions.

Respond to your observations:

The manuscript is well written and organized. However, a framework with a 3R approach is not new to circular economy thinking. A large number of theories have developed the state of the art for more than 3Rs.

About your comment. Although the 3R approach is not new, we have used this imperative for two reasons:

(a) There is still a lack of knowledge about companies' commitment to the 3Rs. For example, Rhein & Sträter, 2021, point out that there is confusion in the use and declaration of the 3Rs by companies.

b) The link between the 3Rs and social implications is unknown. Thus, Padilla-Rivera et al. (2020) call for research that uses the framework of the 3Rs with the social relations they generate.

The sample used is too small, not giving reliability to the research. The study presents a limited case study based on a single organization, sounding like a case of marketing.

I recommend extending the sample, extending the state of the art and submitting again in the future.

About your comment and your recommendation. We justify the sample used in our research, the case study used, and the importance of a theory in a case study.

We reply:

There is no exact number to determine the number of respondents in qualitative research, but the phenomenological study suggests 5-25 respondents (Cresswell, 1998), Morse (1994) suggests at least 6 respondents and Boddy (2016) at least 6 to 12 respondents.

“Theoretical saturation can also be useful as a guide in designing qualitative research, with practical research illustrating that samples of 12 may be cases where data saturation occurs among a relatively homogeneous population” (Boddy, 2016).

Also, we refer to a case study comment:

Stake's work has been particularly influential in defining the case study approach to scientific enquiry. He has helpfully characterised three main types of case study: intrinsic, instrumental and collective.

Intrinsic case study is typically undertaken to learn about a unique phenomenon, which distinguishes it from all others.

Instrumental case study uses a particular case (some of which may be better than others) to gain a broader appreciation of an issue or phenomenon.

Collective case study involves studying multiple cases simultaneously or sequentially in an attempt to generate a still broader appreciation of a particular issue.

Also, we refer to the importance of a case study:

Reviewer 2 Report

The article under the title "Seeing the glass half full: circular economy strategies in Green 2 Glass company" has been reviewed and here are some comments: -

1- It is better to give examples of works published in CE such as carbon, plastic, etc.

2-) According to 51 of [24] it is best to mention the names of the authors and then enter the reference.

3-) While [2] indicates that the order of 'R' strategies may not be appropriate for certain products and conditions, for [26] the '3Rs' share a hierarchy.  (An inappropriate way to refer to the work of researchers

4- The relationship between green glass and sustainability strategies, specifically EC. What is the EC in line 245?

5 -The cost of reuse and energy consumption is essential and how to reduce them is also critical, and should be mentioned when discussing such topics.

6- The number of samples is (statistically) too small to make a decision.

7- Figures 2 and 3 have no mention of Copywrite.

In my opinion, this manuscript is suitable for a magazine and not for a scientific journal.

1-     It is better to give examples of works published in CE such as carbon, plastic, etc.

This research is about the glass industry. But in the manuscrit (introduction) we give some examples of different sectors in which the CE definition has been used according to its call to minimize waste, be it for: plastic, electrical devices, solid waste and the food industry. As you recommend, regarding the plastic we refer to the first two studies (Rhein et al., 2021; Beaumont et al., 2019), and we incorporate the study of Simon (2019).

2-) According to 51 of [24] it is best to mention the names of the authors and then enter the reference.

As you recommend, we accept this suggestion and make the respective changes to the document. Changes are detailed with change control in page 2. We did this according to Borello et al., (2017) in Data and Method section.

Borrello, M., Caracciolo, F., Lombardi, A., Pascucci, S., & Cembalo, L. (2017). Consumers’ perspective on circular economy strategy for reducing food waste. Sustainability, 9(1), 141.

3-) While [2] indicates that the order of 'R' strategies may not be appropriate for certain products and conditions, for [26] the '3Rs' share a hierarchy.  (An inappropriate way to refer to the work of researchers.

As recommended, we have improved the wording of the paragraph in the article from:

While [2] indicates that the order of the "R" strategies may not be appropriate for certain products and conditions, for [26], the "3Rs" share a hierarchy.

changed to: While [2] indicates that to achieve circularity, the order of the "R" strategies may not be the same for certain products and conditions, for [26], the "R "s share a hierarchy, having to start with the "R" action of reducing.

4- The relationship between green glass and sustainability strategies, specifically EC. What is the EC in line 245?

As you recommend, we changed the sentences in the article from: [...] and their perceptions about the relationship between Green Glass and sustainability strategies, specifically EC.[...]

changed to: [...] and their perceptions about the relationship between Green Glass and the CE strategies [...]

Changes are detailed with change control in the manuscript.

5 -The cost of reuse and energy consumption is essential and how to reduce them is also critical, and should be mentioned when discussing such topics.

As you recommend, we accept this suggestion and make the respective changes to the discussion. Changes are detailed with change control.

Reviewer 3 Report

This manuscript entitled “Seeing the glass half full: circular economy strategies in Green Glass company” reports the case investigation of the perception of a circular economy scheme by stakeholders in the Green Glass company, and enlighten the authority this perception holds on social interactions related to responsibility for the product, quality of work, and supplier’s evaluation, respectively. The research in this article is original, well-written, and brings a valuable contribution to the world-scale implementation of circular economy schemes. The manuscript gathers a corpus of 75 references and the Figures are of sufficient quality for submission to Sustainability. However, careful attention should be drawn to the avoidance of company promotion. The following revisions should be considered before publication:

1.     In the Introduction, could the authors justify why the company Green Glass was chosen among other companies implementing a circular economy model ? In particular, with regards to the relative ease to upcycle glass compared to other materials and as such other CE companies?

2.     In Materials and Methods, the description of the Green Glass company is biased. Please remove unuseful informations such as “it was founded by Oscar Munoz at the age of 18 as an idea in the first year of his university studies,” or “it has made its financial statements transparent since 2020, although this is not mandatory”.

3.     In light of the previous comment, could the authors please detail the provenance of the funds they received for this research.

4.     The title for this article is misleading and is an advertisement for Green Glass. The title should reflect the content of the article, which is a sociology study focused on the perception of business by stakeholders of a CE operating company and its repercussions at multiple horizontal and vertical levels.

Respond to your observations:

  1. In the Introduction, could the authors justify why the company Green Glass was chosen among other companies implementing a circular economy model ? In particular, with regards to the relative ease to upcycle glass compared to other materials and as such other CE companies?

We accept this suggestion and make the corresponding changes in the introduction. First, on page 1, we give examples of other industries that use circular economy strategies. Second, on page 2, we indicate the importance of using glass from the wine industry in Chile and recycling it as an input for the Green Glass Company.

The changes are detailed with the change control on page 2.

About your comment, we reply you:

The authors declare no conflict of interest. Green Glass had no role in the design of the study; in the collection, analyses, or interpretation of data; in the writing of the manuscript, and in the decision to publish the results.

Also, the authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper.

We add this at the end of the manuscript in the funding section.

Reviewer 1 Report

I am satisfied with the modifications. The authors responded well and exposed the counterpoints.

Reviewer 2 Report

I appreciate the correction that was made. I just have one comment on the introduction part as it is important to mention some examples on CE such as Circular polymer Economy, Circular carbon economy, etc., therefore, these references are recommended to be added as well as more references in materials subject to demonstrate the importance of circular Economy (CE) in our lives.
