Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

It has seemed to me a very interesting topic to be able to promote rural tourism. Very up-to-date data and 22 very interesting cases. However, it is necessary to include more up-to-date bibliography on sustainability in these rural areas. There are examples, in relation to cultural heritage.  For example some of them:

Huete-Alcocer, N., López-Ruiz, V. R., & Grigorescu, A. (2019). Measurement of satisfaction in sustainable tourism: A cultural heritage site in Spain. Sustainability11(23), 6774.

The research methodology is not clear, the authors limit themselves to naming the methods. The research methodology should be expanded and clarified. The scientific problem should be clarified in the introduction.

The paper is about a very interesting and current topic and could provide interesting information about the "economic, sustainable, and social role of tourism in the development of the rural area".
However, in this form the paper is not publishable.
It is essential to elaborate the case study integrating the desk analysis with a field analysis. For example through in-depth interviews or expert panels or other methods useful for case analysis. This would make it possible to triangulate the sources from which information is obtained and provide greater methodological rigor to the research.
I also suggest, at the end of the introduction, to insert the  paper structure, with a brief summary of each paragraph.
Finally, in the conclusion section, I suggest highlighting more clearly the theoretical and practical implications of the paper.

Abstract needs improvement: Methods and techniques should be added.

Some of the figures should become unreadable if published in black and white mainly due to color schema or to much detail for its size. A revision must be considered.

Some of the figures should be separated and accompanied by an explanatory text and not be placed in a continuous block.

Conclusions are appropriate for the study but they are sometimes too informal as they are not sustained directly by quantitative analysis.

The overall table size and text size are too big when compared to the other figures.

The focus of the paper is appropriate and highlight a current issue related with tourism.
