Navigating Uncertainty in Advanced Air Mobility: Scenario Planning for Policy Pathways at San Francisco International Airport

Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) includes innovative aviation technologies and services that could alter how people and goods are transported. However, future AAM growth and potential regional integration are uncertain and influenced by a range of factors. In this paper, we report findings from expert interviews (n = 35) and a scenario planning workshop (n = 32 stakeholders), conducted between August 2024 and July 2025, to explore potential alternative futures for AAM at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and the greater San Francisco Bay Area. We applied a two-axis framework: regulatory environment (supportive vs. restrictive) and economic conditions (vibrant vs. stagnant). Building on this, we developed four plausible scenarios for the 2025 to 2030 and post-2030 time horizons. We apply the SPELT (social, political, economic, legal, technological) framework to assess cross-cutting drivers, tensions, and indicators across the four scenarios based on two timeframes, i.e., 2025 to 2030 and post-2030. Our analysis of the scenarios reveals that regulatory clarity and macroeconomic conditions are key influencers that define the pace and scale of AAM growth, while community impacts (e.g., noise), public acceptance, and infrastructure availability are constraints. These factors largely determine whether technical readiness can translate into scaled deployment. Cross-cutting themes across all of the scenarios consistently shape the outcomes: (1) equity and community acceptance strongly influence political feasibility; (2) SFO and other airports can serve dual roles as conveners and practical enablers but face risks of stranded assets; and (3) flexible, modular infrastructure and incremental investment strategies reduce uncertainty for SFO and other Bay Area airports and public agencies. Together, the findings suggest that while the future of AAM is uncertain, policy and planning responses can assist airports, local governments, and other public agencies in preparing for potential developments. Coal is the primary energy source in China and has long dominated energy consumption, serving as both the cornerstone for safeguarding national energy security and the backbone of stable energy supply. Despite the gradual improvement in the level of fully mechanized and intelligent mining in recent years, as well as the remarkable progress achieved in safe and efficient mining technologies, significant challenges are still encountered in the horizontal slicing mining of steeply inclined coal seams. This study was conducted against the engineering backdrop of the steeply inclined extra-thick coal seam in the Yimen Coal Mine, Sichuan Province. A combination of theoretical analysis, FLAC3D numerical simulation, and on-site monitoring was employed to investigate the support technology for mining roadways. Considering the geological occurrence conditions, roadway dimensions, and service life, the bolt (cable) + steel strip + metal mesh system was selected as the basic support method, with shed supports supplemented for reinforcement in areas with special geological structures or fractured surrounding rock. A non-uniform roadway support technology for horizontal slicing mining of steeply inclined extra-thick coal seams was proposed. The optimal support parameters of the roadways were determined through numerical simulation, and favorable support effects were verified by field measurements. Full article

There is now considerable effort in addressing complex problems through the application of systems science. This includes the use of methods to ‘co-inquire’ with community stakeholders and map systems to understand the nature of complex problems from multiple perspectives. However, moving from insight into the system to action has been more challenging. In this paper, we describe an approach to the identification of ‘relevant’ and ‘actionable’ local problems, where place-based systems change is the goal. The first phase includes an exploration of what is already known about the system, via an initial system scan, visual system mapping and community workshops. The next phase is an exploration of local problems and patterns, via community workshops and the development of a causal loop diagram. We argue for the identification of complex problems and their underlying causes that resonate with community stakeholders as immediately relevant and able to be acted upon locally. Our approach is neither rigid nor prescriptive. Through the configuration of systems methods (described above), it offers an inquiry pathway, enabling problem identification to emerge from engagement with the complexity of the system. We present both our approach and its application in one Australian community and invite researchers to apply, adapt, and refine this approach in diverse communities seeking place-based systems change. Community pharmacists are in a perfect position to offer comprehensive wound management advice to patients with both chronic and acute wounds, which can result in major costs and emotional burdens. A wound that is managed well through correct assessment, suitable treatment and follow-up counselling will heal optimally and essentially save patients costs and stress. The study aimed to explore the role of South African community pharmacists in wound management. A list of community pharmacies was requested from the South African Pharmacy Council and an online questionnaire was conducted in August 2022 using QuestionPro® Version 2. Stratified random sampling was used to select 350 community pharmacies out of a total of 3240 in South Africa. The response rate was 16.0% (n = 56). Half of the community pharmacists (n = 28) had adequate knowledge about acute wound care, with a third (30.4%, n = 17) indicating that they provide patients with chronic diabetic wound care advice at least once a week. Respondents indicated Continuous Professional Development (CPD) activities and reading journal articles, many relating to diabetic wound management, as ways in which they upskill themselves in wound care. Many of the respondent pharmacists were in favour of an increased focus on wound care services in their community pharmacies. Further training programmes and workshops could be offered to provide pharmacists with the knowledge necessary to manage both chronic and acute wounds in their pharmacies. Full article

Where to Start? Participatory Systems Mapping for Place-Based Service Integration in the City of Casey

Place-based approaches have gained significant attention as a means of addressing entrenched disadvantage through collaborative, locally responsive service delivery, yet implementation has yielded mixed results and the systemic factors that facilitate or impede inter-organisational collaboration remain inadequately understood. This study applied participatory systems mapping as part of a systemic inquiry to identify leverage points for place-based integrated service delivery in the City of Casey, an outer-metropolitan municipality in Melbourne, Australia. Twenty-one representatives from the Casey Futures Partnership engaged in group model building workshops, co-producing a causal loop diagram containing 33 factors and 104 directional connections. The resulting map was analysed using a blended analytical approach combining network metrics with the Action Scales Model. Funding availability and criteria emerged as the most central factor within the system, while belief-level factors, including territorial behaviour and resource and collaboration mindset, were found to be substantially shaped by upstream structural conditions. Factors combining network influence with deeper system positioning and amenability to local action included awareness of community needs and priorities, trust and willingness to collaborate from funders, inter-organisational communication, and advocacy effectiveness. The findings support multi-level place-based approaches that address underlying beliefs and structural conditions alongside operational improvements. Full article

Office workers are exposed to a range of occupational health risks, including prolonged sedentary behaviour, postural load, elevated heart rate, and noise, yet objective and continuous monitoring of these risk factors in workplace settings remains uncommon. This study aimed to co-design occupational health visualisations based on smartphone and smartwatch data, through a multi-stakeholder group of office workers and occupational health professionals. A generative co-design framework was applied, comprising a pre-design phase with a field study and questionnaire, a structured multi-stakeholder workshop, and a follow-up evaluation session. Thematic analysis of the workshop transcript yielded 17 occupational health themes, which were subsequently assessed for technical feasibility relative to the available sensing platform. Of the 27 discrete visualisation elements proposed across both groups, the majority were classified as directly addressable using smartphone and smartwatch sensor data. Visualisations covering physical activity, heart rate, environmental noise exposure, and postural load were implemented in Python using real-world data collected from office workers. The follow-up session provided qualitative confirmation that the developed visualisations were interpretable and aligned with the stakeholder expectations. The generative co-design framework proved well-suited to the occupational health visualisation context, enabling structured translation of stakeholder requirements into technically feasible and interpretable visualisation outputs. Raising cybersecurity awareness (CSA) of employees is crucial for all modern organisations. To meet the organisational need for CSA, activities aimed at increasing CSA have been the focus of both industry and research in the past. There are, subsequently, a plethora of CSA activities for organisations to choose from. Nevertheless, research consistently reports that organisations struggle to raise CSA to an appropriate level, and a core issue lies in their ability to select CSA activities and effectively adopt them. This paper used semi-structured interviews with practitioners working on CSA adoption in public-sector organisations to identify what practitioners perceive as success factors. The interviews were analysed through a socio-technical lens and resulted in a taxonomy that groups success factors for CSA adoption in the three socio-technical dimensions: organisational, user-centric, and technical. The taxonomy outlines ten success factors and demonstrates how the participants see success of CSA activities as not only dependent on technical factors but also, and perhaps even more important, user-adaptability and organisational readiness. The results were validated in a workshop with CSA experts across Europe, who highlighted the practical usefulness of the taxonomy as both a map of potential challenges and a teaching tool for educating new CSA practitioners. Background: Most individuals develop smoking habits in adolescence, highlighting the need for a smoking prevention program targeted at this age group. The use of “Implementation Intentions” (If-Then plans) about how to refuse a cigarette combined with anti-smoking messages has been shown to be effective in the UK. However, there is a scarcity of data regarding school-based smoking prevention interventions among adolescents available to countries with high tobacco consumption rates, like Greece. Objectives: To describe the cultural adaptation procedure and the evaluation protocol for the school-based “Implementation Intentions” program aimed at reducing tobacco use susceptibility among Greek adolescents aged 13–16 in school settings. Methods: The present study is part of the EU-funded FRESHAIR4Life Program. We will use a mixed-methods approach with a pre- and post-intervention design in six conveniently selected secondary schools in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, to measure the intervention’s Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance using the RE-AIM framework. The study plans to involve three Master Trainers (MTs), 20–25 school teachers (to be trained by the MTs), and approximately 480 students. Participating schools will receive the “Implementation Intentions” intervention, which is based on a goal-setting technique where individuals commit to perform a particular behavior when a specific context arises. The study will consist of five sequential phases: Phase I involves training three Master Trainers (MTs) using the International Primary Care Respiratory Group (IPCRG’s) Teach-the-Teacher (TtT) curriculum, specifically focused on the implementation of our intervention. In Phase II, workshops will be held to co-create and culturally adapt the intervention. Phase III will involve teachers trained by MTs on delivering the intervention. In Phase IV, teachers will deliver the intervention among students in their schools. Data will be collected pre- and post-intervention through surveys, session logs, fidelity observations, feedback forms, and follow-up interviews or focus groups (Phase V). Quantitative data will be analyzed descriptively and by using paired t-tests and multiple linear regression analyses, while qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis. Discussion: The study protocol’s potential benefits extend beyond educating Greek adolescents on the risks associated with smoking. Active participation will empower and motivate young people to make informed, healthy choices. We expect the results could help create more effective, context-specific interventions, support policy changes aimed at decreasing the prevalence of adolescent smoking in Crete, Greece, and potentially be used by other countries as well. While the global surgeon deficit continues to demand urgent action, traditional “over-the-shoulder” teaching is increasingly constrained by infection-control demands and crowded operating rooms. Over the past four years, we integrated head-mounted smart cameras into reconstructive-surgery workshops across East Africa. Utilizing voice-controlled, stabilized video technology, we provided trainees with a high-definition, wearer’s-perspective view that enhanced visualization without compromising the sterile field. Following remarkably high acceptance in Africa, we have initiated a pilot study at the National Burn Centre in Sweden to apply these lessons to a high-income setting. Our findings suggest that this technology improves surgical education while supporting infection-control stewardship through reduced overcrowding. This experience illustrates a reverse innovation, where tools refined under the logistical constraints of African operating theatres offer scalable solutions for universal challenges in surgical training and patient safety. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being increasingly used for equid health and welfare. This study aimed to establish consensus on where and how AI should be developed to achieve maximum benefit in this field. A workshop involving 41 stakeholders generated statements about current welfare concerns, areas for AI development, and barriers and solutions to AI use. Statements were circulated through Delphi surveys (acceptance set at 75% agreement). One-hundred-and-six statements reached agreement. Ethological needs not being met and poor equid management practices were key welfare concerns. Participants identified that insufficient owner/carer knowledge and understanding were important factors contributing to welfare concerns. Priority areas for AI development included assessment of equid wellbeing, as well as individual and population-level monitoring. Barriers included limited understanding of both equine behaviour and AI, biased, unethical, or insufficient data collection, difficulties developing accurate models, challenges to validation, and uncertainty around interpretation. Proposed solutions included development of evidence-based, unbiased AI systems, following best practice guidelines, requiring approval/regulation of AI tools, collaboration, and education of AI users. This is the first study to identify stakeholders’ opinions about where AI is likely to have the greatest benefit for equids, potential barriers, and solutions. The findings should be used to prioritise funding and development. Full article

This article builds on the argument that design for complex interactive systems should shift from creating linear transactional interactions toward organizing relational complexity. Grounded in Karen Barad’s agential realism, we argue that a designer’s role can benefit from not predefining interactions but from curating the material-discursive conditions under which meaningful relations can emerge. To explore the empirical and temporal dimensions of this practice, we conducted an exploratory workshop setting the conditions for emergent gameplay dynamics and discussions on agential realist anticipation. Participants utilized a custom-designed game and built their own physical controllers to anticipate and adapt to shifting gameplay conditions. Our results demonstrate how alterations in relational constraints, rather than explicit pre-programmed goals, drove the emergence of non-predefined gameplay rhythms. The findings provide empirical grounding for an agential realist understanding of anticipation, showing that an interactive system’s identity lies in its unfolding processual patterns rather than a static final state. Based on these findings, we propose three design principles for further exploration: Design for Relational Emergence, Design for Re-membering, and Design for Emergent Patterns. Consequently, we conclude by outlining a conceptual approach for non-linear computational architectures, drawing on principles from Enactive AI and reservoir computing. Full article

Background: The increasing consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) is concerning, given their negative impacts on environmental sustainability and human health. Evidence suggests a substantial presence of UPFs in health-promoting settings. However, the factors driving these procurement and service delivery decisions remain largely unexplored. Aim: To develop a conceptual model of the known and potential system drivers of UPFs in hospital food services. Methods: Dietitians from purposively sampled Australian hospitals participated. Group model-building workshops followed pre-established scripts from the system dynamics literature. A series of causal loop diagrams identifying drivers of UPF supply in hospitals was developed using model-building software. Primary and secondary drivers were derived inductively from participants and cross-checked against transcripts to produce the consolidated model. Results: The model presents six primary drivers (hospital menu and nutrition standards, food procurement and contracts, cost, standardisation for quality control, shelf life, and convenience) and nineteen secondary drivers that together explain the increased supply of UPFs in hospitals. Feedback loops were apparent, with drivers mutually reinforcing one another. Conclusions: Complex and interconnected drivers explain the increasing supply of UPFs in hospitals. Findings should inform future strategies to build sustainable food systems through improving food provision and reducing UPF supply in hospitals. Full article

Artificial intelligence (AI) governance is becoming increasingly important due to technological development, widespread adoption, and the lack of boundaries. This triggers many opportunities for innovation but also increases risks. By conducting 23 subject-matter expert interviews with global Chief Data Officers and performing a workshop with 31 European Chief Data Officers, we explored five AI governance mechanisms identified in the literature, and we discussed the impact and developments regarding future legislation in a global context and the impact of data and operational sovereignty on (agentic) AI governance. Our data suggests that installing an AI governance steering committee is currently the most important mechanism and that stakeholder management and model ownership are prerequisite mechanisms; moreover, audit and impact assessments, as well as staff training, are hygiene mechanisms. In the context of agentic AI governance, we found that the mechanisms identified for AI governance must be applied with greater scrutiny, rigor, and consistency; in addition, in this second round of our research, we find that stronger AI tooling is required to effectively support governance practices. Our research resulted in an AI governance framework with six governance mechanisms and six AI governance good practices that provide a starting point for organizations to implement AI governance. Background: Pediatric cancer is a highly stressful and potentially traumatic condition affecting physical health, emotional well-being, developmental trajectories, and family functioning. Hospitalization and intensive treatments often exacerbate emotional distress and symptom burden, negatively impacting quality of life (QoL). Integrating psychosocial and expressive interventions into pediatric oncology care is increasingly recognized as essential. Clay therapy is a multisensory, hands-on creative intervention that may promote emotional regulation, coping, and a sense of agency in hospitalized children. Objectives: This prospective pilot study evaluated the effects of clay therapy on emotional and physical well-being in pediatric oncology patients and explored potential indirect effects on caregivers’ emotional status. Methods: From December 2023 to December 2024, forty hospitalized children with onco-hematological diseases and one parent per patient were enrolled. Each child participated in a one-hour clay therapy workshop led by a professional ceramist. Emotional outcomes were assessed before (T0) and immediately after (T1) the intervention using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the ArtsObs observational scale. Physical symptoms, including pain, fatigue, and nausea, were also evaluated. Results: Following clay therapy, children showed statistically significant improvements across all VAS emotional domains, independent of age and gender. ArtsObs assessments confirmed a significant increase in observed mood, with high levels of relaxation and engagement; female patients demonstrated greater mood improvement than males. Significant reductions in pain, fatigue, and nausea were also observed. Parents exhibited a significant improvement in mood following their child’s participation. Conclusions: These findings suggest that clay therapy is feasible and could be an effective supportive intervention in pediatric oncology, benefiting both emotional and physical well-being. Its integration into multidisciplinary, family-centered care models may enhance QoL during hospitalization and provide holistic support for children with cancer and their families. Full article

Corporate food museums are increasingly recognised as strategic heritage infrastructures capable of mediating between industrial memory, territorial identity, and contemporary societal challenges. This paper proposes a conceptual shift that repositions corporate food museums from static repositories of brand heritage to Living Labs for sustainable, inclusive, and participatory food innovation. Drawing on the EU-funded GNAM project, the study adopts a qualitative methodology combining the mapping of Italian corporate food museums with an analysis of European Living Labs in the food and agri-food domain. The comparative framework informs the development of a heritage-driven Living Lab model articulated around three interconnected dimensions: cultural heritage valorisation, community engagement, and sustainable food system innovation. The model is empirically grounded through a series of design-driven workshops, technology-transfer activities, and digital engagement initiatives conducted within corporate museums and academic laboratories in Southern Italy. These include co-creation processes involving students, citizens, companies, and researchers; experimentation with food waste valorisation, biodegradable and hybrid materials, and 3D food printing; and the deployment of digital platforms and immersive virtual environments. The paper contributes to heritage studies by advancing a replicable framework in which corporate food museums act as active agents of sustainable transformation, linking cultural heritage, technological experimentation, and community participation.
