Sphingan is a crucial exopolysaccharide (EPS) produced by Sphingomonas genus bacteria with wide-ranging applications in fields such as food, medicine, and petroleum. In this study, a novel sphingan, named MT gum, was overproduced from the wild-type strain Sphingomonas sp. MT01 at a yield of 25.6 g/L in a 5 L fermenter for 52 h at 35 °C. The MT gum was mainly composed of D-glucose (65.91%) and L-guluronic acid (30.69%), as confirmed by RP-HPLC, with Mw 7.24 × 105 Da. The MT gum exhibited excellent rheology and pseudoplasticity characteristics while maintaining function in high-temperature and high-salinity environments. The viscosity retention rates of MT gum (0.1%, w/v) were 54.06% (80 °C, 50,000 mg/L salinity) and 34.78% (90 °C, 50,000 mg/L salinity), respectively. The apparent viscosity of MT solutions (0.1%, w/v) was much higher than that of welan solutions under the same conditions. The MT gum also had the property of instant dissolution and completely swelled in 40 min. Meanwhile, the MT gum was resistant to 3–10 mg/L Fe2+ in the reservoir conditions, ensuring its application in offshore oil fields. These findings suggested that the biopolymer MT gum produced by the strain MT01 had significant potential in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) of high-temperature and high-salinity oil reservoirs. A very positive and effective approach to tuning the mechanical properties of polymers has been the development of composites. This paper deals with novel biocomposite hydrogels composed by two biocompatible materials: welan gum as biopolymer matrix and sepiolite as filler. Welan gum content was studied as a tuning parameter to control the rheological properties of the developed biocomposites. The rheological and microstructural behaviour of the composites was investigated by mean of steady-state flow curves, creep-recovery tests, small amplitude oscillatory shear tests, and electron microscopy. An increase in welan gum content provoked the progressive disappearance of the shear-thinningzero-shear-thinning behaviour with a yield point which was clearly defined, characteristic of sepiolite gels, leading to a conventional shear-thinning behaviour, typical of polymeric systems. Also, a higher content of biopolymer in the mixtures led to a more elastic and compact structure characterized by higher values of both G’ and G”. The fundamental novelty was based on taking the flowability provided by the biopolymer as the main objective and reinforcing the viscosity yielded by welan gum with sepiolite, which contributed to increasing the biocomposite consistency. Thus, rheological properties can be adjusted, taking into account the balance of the components to adapt them to the requirements of each application. Full article

Welan gum is one of the most promising polymers used in polymer flooding for enhancing oil recovery, due to its excellent temperature resistance and salt-tolerance performance. However, welan gum, as a polymer with higher molecular weight, can be adsorbed and detained in the pore throat of the reservoir, which is characterized by a smaller size. Montmorillonite, a kind of clay mineral with high content in reservoir rocks, has strong adsorption capacity. Therefore, the adsorption behavior of welan gum on montmorillonite, as well as its influencing factors, are studied in this paper. The results show that the adsorption capacity is 2.07 mg/g. The adsorption capacity decreased with the increase in temperature. Both acidic and alkaline conditions reduced the adsorption capacity. The existence of inorganic salt affected the adsorption capacity. In addition, the higher the cation value, the lower the adsorption capacity. The characterization tests showed that the adsorption of welan gum on montmorillonite was characterized by physical adsorption and surface adsorption, indicating that there were no changes in the internal structure of montmorillonite. This study provides feasible methods to reduce the amount of welan gum adsorbed on montmorillonite, which is of great significance for reducing the permeability damage caused by welan gum adsorption and promoting the application of welan gum in polymer flooding for enhancing oil recovery. The genus Sphingomonas was established by Yabuuchi et al. in 1990, and has attracted much attention in recent years due to its unique ability to degrade environmental pollutants. Some Sphingomonas species can secrete high-molecular-weight extracellular polymers called sphingans, most of which are acidic heteropolysaccharides. Typical sphingans include welan gum, gellan gum, and diutan gum. Most sphingans have a typical, conserved main chain structure, and differences of side chain groups lead to different rheological characteristics, such as shear thinning, temperature or salt resistance, and viscoelasticity. In petroleum production applications, sphingans, and their structurally modified derivatives can replace partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in high-temperature and high-salt reservoirs, while also being able to replace guar gum as a fracturing fluid thickener. This paper focuses on the applications of sphingans and their derivatives in EOR. Full article

Different continuous phases formulated with ecofriendly ingredients such as AMIDET® N, an ecological surfactant, as well as welan and rhamsan gums were developed. An experimental design strategy was been in order to study the influence of the ratio of these two polysaccharides and the homogenization pressure applied in a microfluidizer on the critical shear stress for the continuous phases developed. A pure rhamsan gum solution was selected as the starting point for further study based on the production of thyme oil-in-water emulsions. The effect of the homogenization pressure on the physical stability, critical shear stress and droplet size distribution was analyzed for emulsions with optimized values of the rhamsan–welan ratio. These bioactive thyme oil-in-water emulgels could be considered as delivery systems with potential applications in the food industry. Full article
