Text-based CAPTCHAs remain a widely deployed mechanism for mitigating automated attacks across web platforms. However, the increasing effectiveness of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and advanced computer vision models poses significant challenges to their reliability as a security measure. This study presents a comprehensive forensic and security-oriented analysis of text-based CAPTCHA systems, focusing on how individual and combined visual distortion features affect human usability and machine solvability. A real-world dataset comprising 45,166 CAPTCHA samples was generated under controlled conditions, integrating diverse anti-recognition, anti-segmentation, and anti-classification features. Recognition performance was systematically evaluated using both a CNN-based solver and actual human interaction data collected through an online exam platform. Results reveal that while traditional features such as warping and distortion still degrade machine accuracy to some extent, newer features like the hollow scheme and multi-layer structures offer better resistance against CNN-based attacks while maintaining human readability. Correlation and SHAP-based analyses were employed to quantify feature influence and identify configurations that optimize human–machine separability. This work contributes a publicly available dataset and a feature-impact framework, enabling deeper investigations into adversarial robustness, CAPTCHA resistance modeling, and security-aware human interaction systems. The findings underscore the need for adaptive CAPTCHA mechanisms that are both human-centric and resilient against evolving AI-based attacks. Full article

Two-factor authentication (2FA) has become widely adopted as an efficient and secure way of validating someone’s identity online. Two-factor authentication is difficult in virtual reality (VR) because users are usually wearing a head-mounted display (HMD) which does not allow them to see their real-world surroundings. We present NRXR-ID, a technique to implement two-factor authentication while using extended reality systems and smartphones. The proposed method allows users to complete an authentication challenge using their smartphones without removing their HMD. We performed a user study in which we explored four types of challenges for users, including a novel checkers-style challenge. Users responded to these challenges under three different configurations, including a technique that uses a smartphone to support gaze-based selection without the use of a VR controller. A 4 × 3 within-subjects design allowed us to study all of the proposed variations. We collected performance metrics along with user experience questionnaires containing subjective impressions from thirty participants. Results suggest that the checkers-style visual matching challenge was the most preferred option, followed by the challenge involving entering a digital PIN submitted via the smartphone. Participants were fastest at solving the digital PIN challenge, with an average of 12.35 ± 5 s, followed by the Checkers challenge with 13.85 ± 5.29 s, then the CAPTCHA-style challenge with 14.36 ± 7.5 s, whereas the alphanumeric password took almost twice as long, averaging 32.71 ± 16.44 s. The checkers-style challenge performed consistently across all conditions with no significant differences (p = 0.185), making it robust to different implementation choices. Full article

In recent years, the number of personal accounts assigned to one business user has been constantly growing. There could be as many as 191 individual login credentials used by an average employee, according to a 2017 study. The most recurrent problems associated with this situation faced by users are the strength of passwords and ability to recall them. Researchers have proven that “users are aware of what constitutes a secure password but may forgo these security measures in terms of more convenient passwords, largely depending on account type”. Reusing the same password across multiple platforms or creating one with dictionary words has also been proved to be a common practice amongst many. In this paper, a novel password-reminder scheme will be presented. The goal was that the user creates a CAPTCHA-like image with a hidden meaning, that only he or she can decode. The image must be in some way related to that individual’s memory or her/his unique knowledge or experience. With this image, being presented each time during logging in, the user is asked to associate a password consisting of two or more words and a number. If the image is selected properly and strong association with a person’s visual memory has been linked to it, the chances of recalling a lengthy password he/she created should not present a problem. The objective of the verification process, besides guaranteeing security, is also to be effective and robust. This means that the login should take as little time as possible, and each time allow for a successful authentication of the authorised account. In recent years, however, online users have been experiencing more and more issues with recalling their own passwords on the spot. According to research done in 2017 by LastPass on its employees, the number of personal accounts assigned to one business user currently exceeds 191 profiles and keeps growing. Remembering these many passwords, especially to applications which are not used every week, seems to be impossible without storing them either on paper, in a password manager, or saved in a file somewhere on a PC. In this article a new verification model using a Google Street View image as well as the user’s personal experience and knowledge will be presented. The purpose of this scheme is to assure secure verification by creating longer passwords as well as delivering a ‘password reminder’ already embedded into the login scheme. Full article

Nowadays, lots of applications and websites utilize text-based captchas to partially protect the authentication mechanism. However, in recent years, different ways have been exploited to automatically recognize text-based captchas especially deep learning-based ways, such as, convolutional neural network (CNN). Thus, we have to enhance the text captchas design. In this paper, using the features of the randomness for each encoding process in visual cryptography (VC) and the visual recognizability with naked human eyes, VC is applied to design and enhance text-based captcha. Experimental results using two typical deep learning-based attack models indicate the effectiveness of the designed method. By using our designed VC-enhanced text-based captcha (VCETC), the recognition rate is in some degree decreased. Full article
