In this paper I aim to draw attention to the continued emphasis on ‘moral tales in stories of family construction. In research projects on both conventional family practices such as marriage and non-conventional ones such as living apart together (LAT) and mixed-sex civil partnerships, morality continues to emerge as a core guiding principle for how relationships are organised and maintained. Yet beyond the importance of children in these moral tales, little consideration is given to the other dimensions and shapes that this ‘morality’ may take. Here I bring together three qualitative research projects to illustrate the strong drive of moral obligations in the face of family fluidity, relationship plurality, and individualised therapeutic discourse. With this data I argue that obligations continue to organise relationship decision-making, and we can imagine these obligations as formed of three interrelated dimensions: (1) social ‘oughts’, formed of culture, norms, and values (e.g., we ought to get married because that is the normal thing to do in our society), (2) relational ‘oughts’, including children, family, friends, life/family course, death, health (e.g., we ought to live apart to protect the children), and (3) individual ‘oughts’, which involve strongly held personal beliefs, and an ethic of self-care (e.g., we ought to get a civil partnership because it aligns with my feminist values). Understanding the shape of contemporary intimate morality is an important step in developing future theory, policy, and practice in the field. Full article

This study proposes a methodological approach to reinterpret the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the built heritage of the Island of Mozambique, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1991 under criteria IV and VI. In view of emerging challenges that threaten the heritage-making process—namely, progressive interventions in the built fabric—a methodology of interrelated reading is presented, grounded in a critical and participatory perspective centered on the local community. This methodological structure is operationalized through an interrelated reading model that combines architectural, constructive and intangible layers within a multi-scalar analytical matrix. This approach is based on three interdependent dimensions: (i) material and immaterial; (ii) symbolic and identity-related; and (iii) functional and sustainable. The theoretical model developed, supported by the participation of multiple stakeholders, demonstrates that small adaptations—compatible with cultural values and local actors’ interpretations—can strengthen the recognition of the value of built heritage and foster sustainable human development. Given the existing typological diversity, the study concludes that it is essential to adapt the model of OUV reinterpretation to each specific context, acknowledging the plurality of possible solutions and promoting a balanced integration of material and immaterial values without compromising existing cultural significance. Background: Ethical decision-making in medical care increasingly requires balancing clinical values, professional duties, and organizational reasoning. Understanding how healthcare professionals navigate moral dilemmas necessitates examining the philosophical orientations that shape their ethical judgments. Alongside traditional medical ethics, a business ethics perspective highlights organizational and managerial dimensions of healthcare, offering a more comprehensive understanding of ethical decision-making in modern clinical contexts. Aim: This study aims to examine how healthcare professionals reason about ethical dilemmas by mapping their moral orientations and decision-making patterns across five ethical frameworks-idealism, relativism, objectivism, legalism, and Machiavellianism-integrating both medical and business ethics perspectives. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 277 participants (medical doctors and students). Two validated instruments were used: the Attitudes Toward Business Ethics Questionnaire (ATBEQ) to assess moral orientations and the Clinical Ethical Dilemmas Questionnaire (Richeux & Duquéroy) to evaluate ethical decision patterns. Data were analyzed using correlation, multiple regression, and k-means cluster analyses. Results: Among the five orientations, Legalism negatively predicted “It depends” responses (i.e., higher Legalism scores were associated with fewer indecisive responses), indicating greater decisiveness in ethically ambiguous situations. Unexpected positive correlations were also found between traditionally opposing constructs-such as Ethical Relativism and Moral Objectivism-suggesting moral pluralism. The overall regression model was not statistically significant (R2 = 0.04, p = 0.08). Cluster analysis identified four distinct ethical reasoning profiles: High Machiavellian Idealists, Pragmatic Relativists, Context-Sensitive Objectivists, and Ethical Purists. Conclusions: Abstract philosophical orientations showed limited predictive power for contextual ethical decision-making, highlighting the complex and multidimensional nature of moral reasoning in healthcare. Findings inform the design of context-sensitive ethics education programs that integrate philosophical reflection with case-based learning to strengthen ethical competence among medical professionals. This entry delineates artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and the field’s core ethical challenges, surveys the principal normative frameworks in the literature, and offers a historical analysis that traces and explains the shift from ethical monism to ethical pluralism. In particular, it (i) situates the field within the trajectory of AI’s technical development, (ii) organizes the field’s rationale around challenges regarding alignment, opacity, human oversight, bias and noise, accountability, and questions of agency and patiency, and (iii) compares leading theoretical approaches to address these challenges. We show that AI’s development has brought escalating ethical challenges along with a maturation of frameworks proposed to address them. We map an arc from early monisms (e.g., deontology, consequentialism) to a variety of pluralist ethical frameworks (e.g., pluralistic deontology, augmented utilitarianism, moral foundation theory, and the agent-deed-consequence model) alongside pluralist governance regimes (e.g., principles from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Asilomar AI principles). We find that pluralism is both normatively and operationally compelling: it mirrors the multidimensional problem space of AI ethics, guards against failures (e.g., reward hacking, emergency exceptions), supports legitimacy across diverse sociotechnical contexts, and coheres with extant principles of AI engineering and governance. Although pluralist models vary in structure and exhibit distinct limitations, when applied with due methodological care, each can furnish a valuable foundation for AI ethics. Full article

Coastal lagoons are critical socio-ecological systems that face increasing anthropogenic pressures, threatening their sustainability. Understanding how different social actors value Nature’s Contributions to People (NCPs) is essential for developing effective and legitimate governance approaches. This study examines how sociodemographic characteristics and social roles influence plural valuations of NCPs in the Tres Palos lagoon, Mexico. We collected data from different social actor types across three coastal communities, assessing perception values, orientation values, and change projections for eight NCPs, with a focus on pattern identification and hypothesis generation rather than causal inference. Multiple Correspondence Analysis revealed that social actor type (decision-makers and residents) emerged as the primary factor differentiating NCP valuations. Decision-makers consistently rated regulating contributions (habitat creation, climate regulation, and soil formation) as highly important and projected future declines attributed to external pressures. In contrast, residents assigned lower importance to these contributions and anticipated stability through community restoration efforts. Sex also influenced value orientations, with women displaying more egoistic (self-interest) orientations toward habitat creation and the regulation of freshwater and coastal water quality, while men expressed altruistic (interest in others) orientations toward physical and psychological experiences, as well as habitat creation. These valuation mismatches reflect fundamentally different relationships with lagoon ecosystems: institutional regulatory perspectives versus experiential subsistence viewpoints. The divergent responsibility attributions and future projections create governance challenges that traditional top-down approaches cannot adequately address. Our findings underscore the need for reflexive governance frameworks that recognize value pluralism and foster inclusive spaces for dialogue among diverse knowledge systems. This research contributes to the growing literature on plural valuation while providing practical insights for coastal ecosystem management in the context of the Global South. Full article

This article provides a conceptual and exploratory examination of Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, focusing on the complexities associated with their nature, measurement, reporting, and verification. It examines the emerging role of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing these complexities, particularly considering the fragmented, opaque, and often inaccessible nature of Scope 3 data. The paper introduces Critical Systems Thinking (CST) as a foundational framework for considering the practicality of utilization of AI in this context. CST emphasizes three key principles: critical awareness of assumptions and contexts, emancipation through attention to power dynamics and continuous improvement, and methodological pluralism, to engage with complexity through diverse analytical approaches. Due to the complex nature of GHG emissions reporting and assurance, AI application for this purpose remains limited. While Scope 3 reporting has made progress in certain sectors and regions, overall maturity remains uneven—particularly in developing and emerging markets. Although AI applications in Scope 3 reporting are still at an early stage, they hold significant potential to enhance both reporting quality and assurance processes. A key factor that needs to be addressed in the future utilization of AI for Scope 3 emissions reporting and assurance is the integration of CST into the development and implementation of AI tools. This paper proposes such integration as a necessary step forward. At present, there are substantial gaps in Scope 3 emissions measurement and reporting due to the inherently highly complex, distributed, and fragmented nature of value chain emissions. This gap poses risks to data quality and consistency, which in turn can hinder the implementation of reporting legislation and informed decision making by management and stakeholders. Systemic fragmentation, power asymmetries in data access, and methodological inconsistencies present substantial challenges to traditional forms of validation. Rather than offering a predictive model or finalized solution, the paper aims to lay a conceptual foundation for future empirical research and highlights the importance of systems-based approaches in advancing the credibility and utility of Scope 3 GHG disclosures. This is a key limitation relating to this paper, as it mainly focuses on the CST framework and the potential incapacities of artificial intelligence in relation to the implementation of CST, rather than applications of CST, as they are limited at present. The fast advancement of artificial intelligence presents ethical challenges that exceed the scope of traditional moral theories. This paper proposes a value-centered framework for AI ethics grounded in axiology, which distinguishes intrinsic values like dignity and fairness from instrumental ones such as accuracy and efficiency. This distinction supports ethical pluralism and contextual sensitivity. Using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), the framework translates values into structured evaluations, enabling transparent trade-offs. A healthcare case study illustrates how ethical outcomes vary across physician, patient, and public health perspectives. The results highlight the limitations of single-theory approaches and emphasize the need for adaptable models that reflect diverse stakeholder values. By linking philosophical inquiry with governance initiatives like Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Humanism, the framework offers actionable design criteria for inclusive and context-aware AI development. This article examines how populist radical right parties (PRR) in three contrasting European contexts—Slovenia, France, and Poland—strategically instrumentalize Christianity within their anti-immigration agendas. Rather than using religion as a matter of faith, these parties recast Christianity as a cornerstone of national and European identity, positioning it in opposition to Islam and non-European migration. The study argues that such instrumentalization serves not only to construct a religiously defined national identity, but also to legitimize exclusionary policies. By analyzing selected political speeches, party manifestos, and media discourse, we explore how far-right actors frame Islam as incompatible with European values, reinforcing the division between “Christian Europe” and “foreign non-Christian migrants.” Drawing on recent scholarship on civilizational populism and religious boundary-making, we further assess how processes of globalization and European integration have been interpreted by populist parties to fuel anti-immigrant sentiment. Methodologically, we employ qualitative content analysis to identify recurring themes and rhetorical strategies, with a focus on the intersection of religion, nationalism, and migration. The findings contribute to debates on religious pluralism in contemporary Europe, shedding light on how far-right populism reframes pluralism and challenges secular principles across different political and cultural settings. As artificial intelligence (AI) systems continue to outperform humans in an increasing range of specialised tasks, a fundamental question emerges at the intersection of philosophy, cognitive science, and engineering: should we aim to build AIs that think like humans, or should we embrace non-human-like architectures that may be more efficient or powerful, even if they diverge radically from biological intelligence? This paper draws on a compelling analogy from the history of aviation: the fact that aeroplanes, while inspired by birds, do not fly like birds. Instead of flapping wings or mimicking avian anatomy, engineers developed fixed-wing aircraft governed by aerodynamic principles that enabled superior performance. This decoupling of function from the biological form invites us to ask whether intelligence, like flight, can be achieved without replicating the mechanisms of the human brain. We explore this analogy through three main lenses. First, we consider the philosophical implications: What does it mean for an entity to be intelligent if it does not share our cognitive processes? Can we meaningfully compare different forms of intelligence across radically different substrates? Second, we examine engineering trade-offs in building AIs modelled on human cognition (e.g., through neural–symbolic systems or cognitive architectures) versus those designed for performance alone (e.g., deep learning models). Finally, we explore the ethical consequences of diverging from human-like thinking in AI systems. If AIs do not think like us, how can we ensure alignment, predictability, and shared moral frameworks? By critically evaluating these questions, this paper advocates for a pragmatic and pluralistic approach to AI design: one that values human-like understanding where it is useful (e.g., for interpretability or human–AI interaction) but also recognises the potential of novel architectures unconstrained by biological precedent. Intelligence may ultimately be a broader concept than the human example suggests, and embracing this plurality may be key to building robust and beneficial AI systems. Full article

This paper argues for a conceptualisation of self-determination with respect to Indigenous Peoples’ child protection that is grounded in human rights which are plural, relational, and collective as well as individual. This challenges the idea that human rights are universal and static standards based on a code of enumerated rights with a focus on individual rights. Conceptions of the best interests of the child, permanency in care arrangements, and attachment within colonial institutions such as children’s courts often presume non-Indigenous understandings of family and culture. These child protection concepts, which are often framed as consistent with or even necessary to attain children’s human rights, implicitly embed colonial understandings and values with respect to family and community relations. An acknowledgment of the role of law in structuring relationships is necessary for the human rights of Indigenous children to be upheld. We argue that a relational and distributional conceptualisation of these rights can help to clarify how the law can contribute to strengthening, rather than undermining, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family and community relationships. This article examines William James’s philosophy of science through his pragmatic response to epistemic fallibilism, emphasizing how actionability rather than evidential certainty underwrites both scientific and religious practices. While James explicitly drew comparisons between science and Abrahamic scriptures, my account highlights resonances with non-Western traditions, particularly Indigenous American and Asian epistemologies, also situating some of James’s philosophical motivations within his biography. James may have indirectly absorbed Asian religious and philosophical teachings from American Transcendentalists who engaged with them, and he may have encountered Amerindian perspectives through the cultural milieu of the United States or during his Amazonian expedition. In either case, threads within these global Indigenous traditions align with the weight that James’s work gives to contextual, agent-relative forms of knowing that are inseparable from action. I conclude by discussing how James’s ideas support an account of animism that integrates Amerindian thought with the extended mind thesis. I also detail how his pluralistic account of experience and reality creates conceptual space for the co-existence of science and spirituality, ironically by undermining the assumption that the two operate according to radically distinct epistemologies. Throughout the article, I connect James’s thought to more recent debates in religion and metaphysics. Full article

Mozambican traditional healing is a longstanding, community-embedded practice grounded in local knowledge systems and biodiversity. Despite its resilience, it has been persistently marginalized—from colonial impositions to enduring legal ambiguities—while Western medicine, rooted in Hippocratic, Galenic, and Cartesian paradigms, has become the normative model. This article explores the ethical, legal, and consequentialist dimensions of emancipating traditional healing, analyzing four policy options: prohibition, indifference, protection, and encouragement. Emancipation is presented not as subordination to biomedical standards but as a process of epistemic justice, affirming cultural sovereignty and community agency. Core values such as justice, equity, and respect for plural worldviews underpin the discussion. Traditional healers are often spiritually mandated and serve over 80% of the population, particularly in underserved areas, yet remain institutionally undervalued. Promoting respectful dialogue among stakeholders is crucial to avoid reductive adaptations and foster inclusive, sustainable health systems. Recognizing traditional healing as a legitimate and complementary system not only strengthens Mozambique’s National Health System (SNS) but also contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health, inclusion, and cultural rights. This article argues that empowering traditional healing is both a moral imperative and a strategic investment in planetary health and human flourishing. Full article

This article considers the dilemma between advocating for a religion-based environmentalism in the Himalayas and recognising that the different cultural traditions in the region make a uniform religious environmentalism difficult to uphold. Conservationists often attempt to mobilise local communities for environmental protection by building on their religious and cultural beliefs. Yet, such forms of mobilisation tend to homogenise plural traditions by forcing them within a single fold. What is the way out of this dilemma? I offer some reflections, drawing on my empirical work in the Buddhist Himalayas, and focusing on the case studies of the yak and the black-necked crane respectively, two species which hold a special significance in Arunachal Pradesh, India. Examining these multispecies relations in Arunachal Pradesh reveal not only Buddhist values at work, but plural and evolving entanglements. The question, then, is not to see if the value is religious but if the value is more-than-human in its orientation, taking into account the entangled lives of human and non-human habitations. My broad argument is that an ethics of the environment need neither to be removed from religious ethics, nor enclosed by it. Rather than force environmental thought and behaviour into silos of particular religious traditions or conservation science paradigms, how can one see these as the function of plural habitations? This review examines how procedural justice is dealt with in water management literature. Based on a targeted sample of journal articles between 2006 and 2025, it offers an overview of the disciplinary, geographic, and topical scope of engagement with the concept. Recognizing a plurality of definitions of justice, the review examines areas of overlap and disagreement in the articles’ treatment of procedural justice and highlights insights offered for just water management. It focuses in particular on defining and valuing procedural justice and related dimensions of justice and analyzing power relations in water systems decision making. The conclusion offers suggestions for future scholarship and flags impending challenges. Full article

The sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) literature increasingly promotes certifications as effective tools for diffusing sustainability practices across global production networks. However, this instrumental view underestimates the complex, contested, and often politicized nature of learning in supply chains. Drawing on Bourdieu’s theory of practice and Deetz’s classification of research discourses, this paper contrasts the dominant normative view of certifications with a critical sociological approach. We argue that certifications are not merely technical tools but are embedded in power-laden fields that structure which forms of knowledge are valued, transmitted, and resisted. Through a review of the existing literature and theoretical synthesis, this conceptual paper shows how dominant discourses obscure conflicts, exclude peripheral actors, and perpetuate symbolic domination. This paper calls for greater engagement with critical theory to enrich the understanding of sustainability learning and highlights the need to pluralize perspectives in SSCM research. Full article
