This study evaluates the performance and energy trade-offs of three popular data processing libraries—Pandas, PySpark, and Polars—applied to GreenNav, a CO2 emission prediction pipeline for urban traffic. GreenNav is an eco-friendly navigation app designed to predict CO2 emissions and determine low-carbon routes using a hybrid CNN-LSTM model integrated into a complete pipeline for the ingestion and processing of large, heterogeneous geospatial and road data. Our study quantifies the end-to-end execution time, cumulative CPU load, and maximum RAM consumption for each library when applied to the GreenNav pipeline; it then converts these metrics into energy consumption and CO2 equivalents. Experiments conducted on datasets ranging from 100 MB to 8 GB demonstrate that Polars in lazy mode offers substantial gains, reducing the processing time by a factor of more than twenty, memory consumption by about two-thirds, and energy consumption by about 60%, while maintaining the predictive accuracy of the model (R2 ≈ 0.91). These results clearly show that the careful selection of data processing libraries can reconcile high computing performance and environmental sustainability in large-scale machine learning applications. With deepening global higher education reforms, outcome-based education has emerged as the core paradigm for teaching model innovation. This study investigates the structural dependencies and teaching effectiveness of the Environmental Design curriculum at Hubei Engineering University in medium-sized cities, China, addressing challenges of enrollment decline and market contraction critical for urban sustainability. Using network analysis, we construct curriculum support and contribution networks and course temporal networks to assess structural dependencies and teaching effectiveness, revealing structural patterns and optimizing the OBE-based Environmental Design curriculum to enhance educational quality and student competencies. Analysis reveals computer basic courses as knowledge transmission hubs, creating a course network with a distinct core–periphery structure. Technical course reforms significantly outperform theoretical course reforms in improving student performance metrics, such as higher average scores, better grade distributions, and reduced performance gaps, while innovative practice courses show peripheral isolation patterns, indicating limited connectivity with core curriculum modules, which reduces their educational impact. These findings provide empirical insights for curriculum optimization, supporting urban sustainable development through enhanced professional talent cultivation equipped to address environmental challenges like sustainable design practices and resource-efficient urban planning. Network analysis applications introduce innovative frameworks for curriculum reform strategies. Future research expansion through larger sample validation will support urban sustainable development goals and enhance professional talent cultivation outcomes. Full article

Coupled grey and green infrastructure (CGGI) offers a promising pathway toward sustainable stormwater management in historic urban environments. This study compares CGGI and conventional grey infrastructure (GREI)-only strategies across four degrees of layout centralization (0%, 33.3%, 66.7%, and 100%) in the Quanzhou West Street Historic Reserve, China. Using a multi-objective optimization framework integrating SWMM simulations, life-cycle cost (LCC) modeling, and resilience metrics, we found that the decentralized CGGI layouts reduced the total LCC by up to 29.6% and required 60.7% less green infrastructure (GI) area than centralized schemes. Under nine extreme rainfall scenarios, the GREI-only systems showed slightly higher technical resilience (Tech-R: max 99.6%) than CGGI (Tech-R: max 99.1%). However, the CGGI systems outperformed GREI in operational resilience (Oper-R), reducing overflow volume by up to 22.6% under 50% network failure. These findings demonstrate that decentralized CGGI provides a more resilient and cost-effective drainage solution, well-suited for heritage districts with spatial and cultural constraints. The compound effects of extreme climate change and intensive urban development have led to more frequent urban inundation, highlighting the urgent need for the fine-scale evaluation of stormwater drainage system performance in high-density urban built-up areas. A typical basin, located in Shenzhen, was selected, and a pipe–river coupled SWMM was developed and calibrated via a genetic algorithm to simulate the storm drainage system. Design storm scenario analyses revealed that regional inundation occurred in the central area of the basin and the enclosed culvert sections of the midstream river, even under a 0.5-year recurrence period, while the downstream open river channels maintained a substantial drainage capacity under a 200-year rainfall event. To systematically identify bottleneck zones, two novel metrics, namely, the node cumulative inundation volume and the conduit cumulative inundation length, were proposed to quantify the local inundation severity and spatial interactions across the drainage network. Two critical bottleneck zones were selected, and strategic improvement via the cross-sectional expansion of pipes and river culverts significantly enhanced the drainage efficiency. This study provides a practical case study and transferable technical framework for integrating hydraulic modeling, spatial analytics, and targeted infrastructure upgrades to enhance the resilience of drainage systems in high-density urban environments, offering an actionable framework for sustainable urban stormwater drainage system management. This study addresses critical safety challenges in sustainable urban mobility by developing a probabilistic framework for lane-change risk prediction on congested expressways. Utilizing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-captured trajectory data from 784 validated lane-change events, we construct a Bayesian network model integrated with an I-CH scoring-enhanced MMHC algorithm. This approach quantifies risk probabilities while accounting for driver decision dynamics and input data uncertainties—key gaps in conventional methods like time-to-collision metrics. Validation via the Asia network paradigm demonstrates 80.5% reliability in forecasting high-risk maneuvers. Crucially, we identify two sustainability-oriented operational thresholds: (1) optimal lane-change success occurs when trailing-vehicle speeds in target lanes are maintained at 1.0–3.0 m/s (following-gap < 4.0 m) or 3.0–6.0 m/s (gap ≥ 4.0 m), and (2) insertion-angle change rates exceeding 3.0°/unit-time significantly elevate transition probability. These evidence-based parameters enable traffic management systems to proactively mitigate collision risks by 13.26% while optimizing flow continuity. By converting behavioral insights into adaptive control strategies, this research advances resilient transportation infrastructure and low-carbon mobility through congestion reduction. Full article

During the transition of culture-featured district planning from static conservation to innovation-driven models, existing research remains constrained by mechanistic paradigms, reducing districts to functional containers and neglecting human perceptual interactions and meaning-production mechanisms. This study explores and quantifies the generative mechanisms of spatial communicability and cultural dissemination efficacy within human-centered frameworks. Grounded in humanistic urbanism, we analyze Harbin Central Street as a case study integrating historical heritage with contemporary vitality, developing a tripartite communicability assessment framework comprising perceptual experience, infrastructure utility, and behavioral dynamics. Machine learning-based threshold analysis reveals that spatial encoding elements govern communicability through significant nonlinear mechanisms. The conclusion shows synergies between street view-quantified greenery visibility and pedestrian accessibility establish critical human-centered design thresholds. Spatial data analysis integrating physiologically sensed emotional experiences and topologically analyzed spatial morphology resolves metric fragmentation while examining spatial encoding’s impact on interaction efficacy. This research provides data-driven decision support for sustainable urban renewal and enhanced cultural dissemination, advancing heritage sustainability. Full article

Urban parks play an essential role in mitigating the urban heat island (UHI) effect driven by urbanization. A rigorous understanding of the cooling effects of urban parks can support urban planning efforts aimed at mitigating the UHI effect and enhancing urban sustainability. However, previous research has primarily focused on the maximum cooling impact, often overlooking the accumulative effects arising from spatial continuity. The present study fills this gap by investigating 74 urban parks located in the central area of Jinan and constructing a comprehensive cooling evaluation framework through two dimensions: maximum impact (Park Cooling Area, PCA; Park Cooling Efficiency, PCE) and cumulative impact (Park Cooling Intensity, PCI; Park Cooling Gradient, PCG). We further systematically examined the influence of park attributes and the surrounding urban structures on these metrics. The findings indicate that urban parks, as a whole, significantly contribute to lowering the ambient temperatures in their vicinity: 62.3% are located in surface temperature cold spots, reducing ambient temperatures by up to 7.77 °C. However, cooling intensity, range, and efficiency vary significantly across parks, with an average PCI of 0.0280, PCG of 0.99 °C, PCA of 46.00 ha, and PCE of 5.34. For maximum impact, PCA is jointly determined by park area, boundary length, and shape complexity, while smaller parks generally exhibit higher PCE—reflecting diminished cooling efficiency at excessive scales. For cumulative impact, building density and spatial enclosure degree surrounding parks critically regulate PCI and PCG by influencing cool-air aggregation and diffusion. Based on these findings, this study classified urban parks according to their cooling characteristics, clarified the functional differences among different park types, and proposed targeted recommendations. China’s rapid urbanization has driven tremendous socioeconomic development while posing new forms of social–spatial inequalities that challenge environmental sustainability and spatial justice. This study investigates urban park-accessibility patterns across 10 s-tier provincial capital cities in China, examining how these patterns relate to housing-price dynamics to reveal diverse manifestations of social–spatial (in)justice. Using comprehensive spatial analysis grounded in distributive justice principles, we measure park accessibility through multiple metrics: distance to the nearest park, park size, and the number of parks within a 15 min walk from residential communities. Our findings reveal significant variation in park accessibility across these cities, with distinctive patterns emerging in the relationship between housing prices and park access that reflect different forms of social–spatial exclusion and inclusion. While most cities demonstrate an unbalanced spatial distribution of parks, they exhibit different forms of this disparity. Some cities show consistent park access across housing-price categories, while others display correlations between high housing prices and superior park accessibility. We argue that these divergent patterns reflect each city’s unique combination of economic development trajectory, politically strategic positioning within national urban hierarchies, and geographical constraints. Through this comparative analysis of second-tier cities, this study contributes to broader understandings of social–spatial (in)justice and urban environmental inequalities within China’s urbanization process, highlighting the need for place-specific approaches to achieving equitable access to urban amenities. Natural Ventilation Technique of uNVeF in Urban Residential Unit Through a Case Study

The present study was motivated by the need to enhance indoor air quality and reduce airborne disease transmission in dense urban environments where high-rise residential buildings face challenges in achieving effective natural ventilation. The problem lies in the lack of scalable and convenient tools to optimize natural ventilation rate, particularly in urban settings with varying building heights. To address this, the scientific technique developed with an innovative metric, the urbanized natural ventilation effectiveness factor (uNVeF), integrates regression analysis of wind direction, velocity, air change rate per hour (ACH), window configurations, and building height to quantify ventilation efficiency. By employing a field measurement methodology, the measurements were conducted across 25 window-opening scenarios in a 13.9 m2 residential unit on the 35/F of a Hong Kong public housing building, supplemented by the Hellman Exponential Law with a site-specific friction coefficient (0.2907, R2 = 0.9232) to estimate the lower floor natural ventilation rate. The results confirm compliance with Hong Kong’s statutory 1.5 ACH requirement (Practice Note for Authorized Persons, Registered Structural Engineers, and Registered Geotechnical Engineers) and achieving a peak ACH at a uNVeF of 0.953 with 75% window opening. The results also revealed that lower floors can maintain 1.5 ACH with adjusted window configurations. Using the Wells–Riley model, the estimation results indicated significant airborne disease infection risk reductions of 96.1% at 35/F and 93.4% at 1/F compared to the 1.5 ACH baseline which demonstrates a strong correlation between ACH, uNVeF and infection risks. The uNVeF framework offers a practical approach to optimize natural ventilation and provides actionable guidelines, together with future research on the scope of validity to refine this technique for residents and developers. The implications in the building industry include setting up sustainable design standards, enhancing public health resilience, supporting policy frameworks for energy-efficient urban planning, and potentially driving innovation in high-rise residential construction and retrofitting globally. Understanding and forecasting energy consumption patterns is crucial for improving energy efficiency and human well-being, especially in diverse infrastructures like Spain. This research addresses a significant gap in energy demand forecasting across three building types by comparing six machine learning algorithms: Artificial Neural Networks, Random Forest, XGBoost, Radial Basis Function Network, Autoencoder, and Decision Trees. The primary aim is to identify the most effective model for predicting energy consumption based on historical data, contributing to the relationship between energy systems and urban well-being. The study emphasizes challenges in energy use and advocates for sustainable management practices. By forecasting energy demand over the next three years using linear regression, it provides actionable insights for energy providers, enhancing resilience in urban environments impacted by climate change. The findings deepen our understanding of energy dynamics across various building types and promote a sustainable energy future. Stakeholders will receive targeted recommendations for aligning energy production with consumption trends while meeting environmental responsibilities. Model performance is rigorously evaluated using metrics like Squared Mean Root Percentage Error (RMSPE) and Coefficient of Determination (R2), ensuring robust analysis. Training times for models in the LUCIA building ranged from 2 to 19 s, with the Decision Tree model showing the shortest times, highlighting the need to balance computational efficiency with model performance. Corporate environmental claims often neglect the substantial ecological impact of land-use changes. This case study examines the spatial dimension of retail-driven land-use transformation by analyzing supermarket expansion in the Veneto region (northern Italy), with a focus on a large grocery retailer. We evaluated its corporate environmental claims by assessing land consumption patterns from 1983 to 2024 using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The GIS-based methodology involved geocoding 113 Points of Sale (POS—individual retail outlets), performing photo-interpretation of historical aerial imagery, and classifying land-cover types prior to construction. We applied spatial metrics such as total converted surface area, land-cover class frequency across eight categories (e.g., agricultural, herbaceous, arboreal), and the average linear distance between afforestation sites and POS developed on previously rural land. Our findings reveal that 65.97% of the total land converted for Points of Sale development occurred in rural areas, primarily agricultural and herbaceous lands. These landscapes play a critical role in supporting urban biodiversity and providing essential ecosystem services, which are increasingly threatened by unchecked land conversion. While the corporate sustainability reports and marketing strategies emphasize afforestation efforts under their “We Love Nature” initiative, our spatial analysis uncovers no evidence of actual land-use conversion. Additionally, reforestation activities are located an average of 40.75 km from converted sites, undermining their role as effective compensatory measures. These findings raise concerns about selective disclosure and greenwashing, driving the need for more comprehensive and transparent corporate sustainability reporting. The study argues for stronger policy frameworks to incentivize urban regeneration over greenfield development and calls for the integration of land-use data into corporate sustainability disclosures. By combining geospatial methods with content analysis, the research offers new insights into the intersection of land use, business practices, and environmental sustainability in climate-vulnerable regions. Amman’s rapid population growth and sprawling urbanization have resulted in car-centric, fragmented neighborhoods that lack social cohesion and are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. This study reframes walkability as a climate adaptation strategy, demonstrating how pedestrian-oriented spatial planning can reduce vehicle emissions, mitigate urban heat island effects, and enhance the resilience of green infrastructure in peri-urban contexts. Using Deir Ghbar, a rapidly developing marginal area on Amman’s western edge, as a case study, we combine objective walkability metrics (street connectivity and residential and retail density) with GIS-based spatial regression analysis to examine relationships with residents’ sense of community. Employing a quantitative, correlational research design, we assess walkability using a composite objective walkability index, calculated from the land-use mix, street connectivity, retail density, and residential density. Our results reveal that higher residential density and improved street connectivity significantly strengthen social cohesion, whereas low-density zones reinforce spatial and socioeconomic disparities. Furthermore, the findings highlight the potential of targeted green infrastructure interventions, such as continuous street tree canopies and permeable pavements, to enhance pedestrian comfort and urban ecological functions. By visualizing spatial patterns and correlating built-environment attributes with community outcomes, this research provides actionable insights for policymakers and urban planners. These strategies contribute directly to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), by fostering more inclusive, connected, and climate-resilient neighborhoods. Deir Ghbar emerges as a model for scalable, GIS-driven spatial planning in rural and marginal peri-urban areas throughout Jordan and similar regions facing accelerated urban transitions. By correlating walkability metrics with community outcomes, this study operationalizes SDGs 11 and 13, offering a replicable framework for climate-resilient urban planning in arid regions. Rapid global urbanization poses complex challenges that demand advanced data-driven forecasting solutions for smart cities. Traditional statistical and standalone Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) models often struggle to capture non-linear dynamics and long-term dependencies in urban time-series data. This review critically examines hybrid LSTM models that integrate LSTM with complementary algorithms, including CNN, GRU, ARIMA, and SVM. These hybrid architectures aim to enhance prediction accuracy, integrate diverse data sources, and improve computational efficiency. This study systematically reviews principles, trends, and real-world applications, quantitatively evaluating hybrid LSTM models using performance metrics such as mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), and the coefficient of determination (R2), while identifying key study limitations. The case studies considered include traffic management, environmental monitoring, energy forecasting, public health, infrastructure assessment, and urban waste management. For example, hybrid models have achieved substantial accuracy improvements in traffic congestion forecasting, reducing their mean absolute error by up to 29%. Despite the inherent challenges related to structural complexity, interpretability, and data requirements, ongoing research on attention mechanisms, model compression, and explainable AI has significantly mitigated these limitations. Thus, hybrid LSTM models have emerged as vital analytical tools capable of robust spatiotemporal prediction, effectively supporting sustainable urban development and data-driven decision-making in evolving smart city environments. Urban green spaces (UGS) serve as critical mitigators of urban heat islands (UHIs), yet the scale-dependent mechanisms through which UGS morphology regulates thermal effects remain insufficiently understood. This study investigates the multi-scale relationships between UGS spatial patterns and cooling effects in Macao, employing morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) to characterize UGS configurations and geographically weighted regression (GWR) to examine city-scale thermal interactions, complemented by patch-scale buffer analyses of area, perimeter, and landscape shape index effects. Results demonstrate that high-UGS-integrity areas significantly enhance cooling capacity (area with proportion of core ≥35% showing optimal performance), while fragmented elements (branches, edges) exacerbate UHIs, with patch-scale analyses revealing nonlinear threshold effects in cooling efficiency. A tripartite classification of UGS by cooling capacity identifies strong mitigation types with optimal shape metrics and cooling extents. These findings establish a tripartite UGS classification system based on cooling performance and identify optimal morphological parameters, advancing understanding of thermal regulation mechanisms in urban environments. This research provides empirical evidence for UGS planning strategies prioritizing core area conservation, morphological optimization, and seasonal adaptation to improve urban climate resilience, offering practical insights for sustainable development in high-density coastal cities. Optimization of energy consumption in urban infrastructures is essential to achieve sustainability and reduce environmental impacts. In particular, accurate regression-based energy forecasting of the energy consumption in various sectors plays a key role in informed decision-making, efficiency improvements, and resource allocation. This paper examines the application of artificial intelligence and supervised machine learning techniques to modeling and predicting the energy consumption patterns in the smart grid sector of a commercial building located in Singapore. By evaluating performance of several regression algorithms using various metrics, this study identifies the most effective method for analyzing sectoral energy consumption. The results show that the Regression Tree Ensemble algorithm outperforms other techniques, achieving an accuracy of 97.00%, followed by Random Forest Regression (96.20%) and Gradient Boosted Regression Trees (95.50%). These results underline the potential of machine learning models to foster intelligent energy management and promote sustainable energy practices in smart cities. Full article
