Background/Objectives: Neck pain is defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, affecting the cervical region. It represents one of the leading causes of disability, with a prevalence of 30%. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive electrotherapy technique that enables direct modulation of cortical excitability. It involves the application of a low-intensity electrical current to the scalp, targeting the central nervous system. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of tDCS on functionality, pain, mobility, and pressure pain threshold in patients with chronic nonspecific neck pain. Methods: Thirty participants (18–60 years) were selected to receive ten treatment sessions over a four-week period using tDCS (CG = 15) or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) (CG = 15), with the following various related variables evaluated: functionality (Neck Disability Index), pain intensity (NPRS), cervical range of motion (ROM), and pressure pain threshold (PPT). Assessments were conducted at baseline, post-treatment, one month, and three months after the intervention. Results: The within-group analysis revealed statistically significant improvements for both groups at post-treatment, one-month follow-up, and three-month follow-up. Conclusions: The comparison between groups shows favorable changes in the tDCS group for PPT measurements. Full article

Background. Cognitive-behavioral theories suggest that obsessions in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) develop from maladaptive misinterpretations and coping strategies of unwanted intrusive thoughts (UITs). Models of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and Illness Anxiety Disorder (IAD) propose that these symptoms stem from similar misinterpretations of common UITs relating to perceived defects in appearance and illness. This study examines whether maladaptive misinterpretations and control strategies leading to the escalation of obsessional UITs to OCD symptoms also have a similar effect on the development of BDD and IAD. More specifically, we examined whether misinterpretations and neutralizing responses mediate the associations between the frequency of disorder-specific UITs and symptoms of these disorders. Method. A total of 625 non-clinical participants from four countries completed the Questionnaire of Unpleasant Intrusive Thoughts (QUIT) that assesses OCD, BDD and IAD-related UITs and their associated misinterpretations and neutralizing strategies, as well as self-report measures of OCD, BDD, and IAD symptoms. Parallel multiple mediation models were conducted. Results. The frequency of OCD, BDD and IAD-related UITs predicted symptoms of each disorder. Dysfunctional appraisals and neutralizing behaviors mediated the associations between disorder-specific UITs and symptoms in OCD and IAD. The IAD model accounted for a smaller proportion of variance than the OCD model. No mediating effects were found for BDD symptoms. Conclusions. Experiencing disturbing UITs is a transdiagnostic risk factor of OCD, BDD and IAD, and is associated with symptoms of these disorders. Maladaptive interpretation of UITs and neutralizing strategies should be specific targets in the assessment and treatment of OCD and IAD. The absence of mediation effects for BDD could be due to the limitations observed on the self-report used to assess BDD symptoms and/or the low relevance of the misinterpretations and control strategies assessed by the QUIT, which are more typically endorsed by individuals with OCD. Background: The aim of this study was to assess the experiences and attitudes of dentists toward treating patients with mental disorders and to investigate how these attitudes correlate with factors such as sex, age, and years of clinical experience. Methods: A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted from March to July 2021 via an online questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of four sections: demographic information, self-assessment of experiences and attitudes toward treating patients with mental disorders, knowledge of psychotropic drugs and their interactions, and personal experiences with patient care. Results: Overall, 101 dentists, mostly females (78.22%), completed the questionnaire, of which 65.35% consistently checked whether their patients were taking psychotropic drugs and 48.51% inquired about mental disorders when taking medical history. Still, 39.60% reported unpleasant experiences when treating such patients—mostly female dentists—and as many as 14.85% of all dentists refused to treat them. More than 94% of dentists recognized that patients with mental disorders are at greater risk for poor oral health and in need of early referral and professional support. Older dentists demonstrated better knowledge of oral manifestations and drug interactions relevant to dental treatment. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the need for improved training, an interdisciplinary approach, and greater dissemination of new scientific evidence for managing patients with mental disorders in dental practice. Considering that this is a pilot study using a combination of non-probabilistic convenience and snowball sampling method, the findings should be considered preliminary and interpreted with caution, as the sampling method limits the ability to make statistical inferences. During heavy rainfalls, overflowing sewage water flows from the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) chambers and pollutes the Trnávka River in Trnava, Slovakia. This paper aims to propose water retention measures for the Trnávka River as a remediation technique for CSO-affected watercourses, which can contribute to the ‘flushing’ of the riverbed. During heavy rainfalls, the Trnávka River is polluted by solid, non-soluble materials, which produce unpleasant odors and are the subject of numerous complaints by citizens, particularly during low water levels. Three inflatable rubber weirs were designed, and their design was verified using a 1D numerical model of the Trnávka River. The simulations of the proposed measures performed in the HEC-RAS 5.0 software excluded the adverse effect of the backwater on the functioning of the CSO chambers in the city of Trnava during normal flow rates and confirmed that, even after installation of the weirs, the transition of the flood wave will pass in the riverbed, not causing the flooding of the adjacent area. The chemical–physical study of the Trnávka River confirmed our assumption that higher flow rates, which can be secured by the regulation of the proposed weirs, can contribute to the purity of the watercourse in the city of Trnava. Background/Objectives: Emotion and cognition, two essential components of human mental processes, have traditionally been studied independently. The exploration of emotion and cognition is fundamental for gaining an understanding of human mental functioning. Despite the availability of various methods to measure and evaluate emotional states and cognitive processes, physiological measurements are considered to be one of the most reliable methods due to their objective approach. In particular, electroencephalography (EEG) provides unique insight into emotional and cognitive activity through the analysis of event-related potentials (ERPs). In this study, we discriminated pleasant/unpleasant emotional moods and low/high cognitive states using graph-theoretic features extracted from spatio-temporal components. Methods: Emotional data were collected at the Physiology Department of Istanbul Medical Faculty at Istanbul University, whereas cognitive data were obtained from the DepositOnce repository of Technische Universität Berlin. Wavelet coherence values for the N100, N200, and P300 single-trial ERP components in the delta, theta, alpha, and beta frequency bands were investigated individually. Then, graph-theoretic analyses were performed using wavelet coherence-based connectivity maps. Global and local graph metrics such as energy efficiency, strength, transitivity, characteristic path length, and clustering coefficient were used as features for classification using support vector machines (SVMs), k-nearest neighbor(K-NN), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Results: The results show that both pleasant/unpleasant emotional moods and low/high cognitive states can be discriminated, with average accuracies of up to 92% and 89%, respectively. Conclusions: Graph-theoretic metrics based on wavelet coherence of ERP components in the delta band with the SVM algorithm allow for the discrimination of emotional and cognitive states with high accuracy. Worsening adolescent mental health is a significant social issue. Although dreams may reflect one’s mental state, few studies have focused on adolescents. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between dream content and mental health, specifically anxiety disorder and depressive symptoms, among Japanese adolescents. This cross-sectional study obtained data on gender, grade, age, lifestyle habits, weekday sleep duration, anxiety disorder symptoms, depressive symptoms, and dreams from Japanese high school students. The data were analyzed via multiple logistic regression analyses. The prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms increased with the frequency of “rumination at bedtime”, “memory of dreams”, “emotional carryover”, and “awakening by frightening”, “unpleasant”, “film-like”, “fantastical”, and “recurring” dreams. However, this was not the case for “pleasant dreams”. Furthermore, “rumination at bedtime” (anxiety disorder symptoms: adjusted odds ratio: 10.60; 95% confidence interval: 5.92–18.97; depressive symptoms: 8.79, 5.58–13.87) and “unpleasant dreams” (anxiety disorder symptoms: 5.25, 2.86–9.64; depressive symptoms: 10.13, 5.57–18.44) exhibited particularly high odds ratios. “Rumination at bedtime” and “unpleasant dreams” may serve as early indicators of declining mental health. School- and parent-led interventions aimed at improving mental well-being may help prevent the progression or exacerbation of anxiety and depressive symptoms among adolescents. Full article

Background: Chronic pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience that greatly affects functioning and well-being. Studies link chronic pain and violence against women, with an odds ratio of 2.08 and a 26% prevalence rate. The bio-psycho-social consequences reduce quality of life and cause disability. Despite extensive research, the etiology remains unclear. This study investigates the bio-psycho-social risk factors of chronic pain in women, both victims and non-victims of violence. Methods: A case–control study (December 2023–June 2024) used odds ratios and Fisher’s exact test to explore risk factors associated with chronic pain. Univariate logistic regressions identified significant predictors. Results: The study included 170 women (68 victims), half with chronic pain. Nine risk factors were specific to victims (three biological, six psycho-social), four to non-victims (two biological, two psycho-social), and twenty-three to all women (five biological, eighteen psycho-social). A four-factor model best explained risk in victims and all women, while a two-factor model fit non-victims. Conclusions: The bio-psycho-social model of chronic pain is supported, identifying specific risk factors. These findings can aid anti-violence and healthcare professionals in screening and early intervention. Full article

Garlic is a spice widely used worldwide, but ingestion of garlic can cause unpleasant breath odor that can be offensive in interpersonal interactions. Among several sulfur-containing components of garlic, allyl methyl sulfide is considered the primary causative agent of unpleasant garlic breath and body odor. We discovered that hop cone powder exhibits potent deodorizing activity against allyl methyl sulfide. Oxidation products of the hop bitter acids humulinone and hulupone were detected in a partially purified sample of hop cone powder. Oxidation products of the α-acids cohumulinone and n-humulinone showed approximately 10- and 15-fold stronger deodorizing activity than the parent α-acids, respectively. The deodorizing activity of oxidation products of β-acids was comparable to that of n-humulinone. It is presumed that the oxidation products of hop powder play an important role in the strong deodorizing activity of hop cone powder against allyl methyl sulfide. Full article

The Role of Stress in Venipuncture Pain in Adolescents: Secondary Analysis of a Prospective Observational Study

Background/Objectives: Venipuncture is a painful and distress-inducing procedure, especially in adolescents. However, the effect of stress on venipuncture pain remains unclear. This study investigated the relationships between stress (venipuncture-related and general stress) and venipuncture pain intensity and unpleasantness, hypothesizing that higher stress levels would be associated with greater pain levels. Methods: Forty-two adolescents (five boys, mean age 12.2 ± 1.4) participated in the study, which included completing questionnaires and a blood draw. General stress was assessed using the Perceived Stress Scale. Before the blood draw, participants were asked to rate their venipuncture-related stress level using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Following venipuncture, participants rated their pain intensity and pain unpleasantness using the VAS. Nineteen participants returned for a similar study visit after 1 year. Regression models were used to assess the relationships between pain and stress. In addition, correlations were used to examine the relationships between baseline and 1-year follow-up stress and pain levels. Results: Only baseline venipuncture stress, but not general stress, was related to venipuncture pain intensity (estimate (SE) = 0.185 (0.046), t-ratio = 4.00, p < 0.001) and pain unpleasantness (estimate (SE) = 0.378 (0.116), t-ratio = 3.27, p = 0.002). Baseline stress levels were related to stress levels at 1-year follow-up. However, this was not found for pain levels. In addition, stress at baseline did not impact pain levels at 1-year follow-up. Conclusions: General stress may be different from venipuncture stress, with the latter having a greater influence on venipuncture pain. Developing interventions focused on reducing stress related to venipuncture in adolescents could assist in reducing pain and increase willingness to undergo needle procedures. Full article

Thus far, various aquaculture modes have been developed to facilitate the rapid growth of the aquaculture industry and thus meet the heavy demand for aquatic products for human consumption. However, the effects of different culture modes on fish muscular nutritional content and volatile flavor are rarely reported. In the present study, we evaluated the differences in muscular nutrition content and dietary flavor between Chinese longsnout catfish (Leiocassis longirostris) groups cultured in two different modes, i.e., flow-through water tanks (CWWL) and traditional ponds (CWWC). Our statistical results showed that a significantly higher crude protein content and lower crude fat levels were observed in the CWWL group than in the CWWC group (p < 0.05). Similarly, the contents of total aromatic amino acids (Total ∑TAA) and total dicarboxylic amino acids (Total ∑DAA) were also significantly higher in the CWWL group. Among the fatty acids, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs), including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and arachidonic acid (ARA), were recorded at 1.44%, 2.5%, and 9.09%, respectively, in the CWWL group, which were dramatically higher than in the CWWC group. Conversely, the contents of volatile compounds, including 2-tridecanone, dimethyl trisulfide, and isophorone, in the CWWC group were also significant higher, which, however, may contribute to an unpleasant sensory experience. Conversely, other compounds like 2-methylbutanal and 2,3-butanedione were prevalent in the CWWL group, which can induce rich nutty and buttery flavors and thus enhance the freshness of flavor profiles. In conclusion, Chinese longsnout catfish cultured in flow-through tanks show higher nutritional value and better sensory flavor in comparison with those raised in ponds. These findings not only provide novel insights into the potential effects of aquaculture modes on muscular nutrition content and dietary flavor for Chinese longsnout catfish but also lay a solid foundation for optimizing practical culture modes to improve the global aquaculture industry. Background/Objectives: This study examined the effect of sound preference on loudness tolerance (LTLs) and preferred listening levels (PLLs) using personal listening devices (PLDs). The implication of this relationship on hearing health promotion counseling and practices using PLDs is discussed. Methods: Participants were 50 individuals, aged 21 to 90 years, with normal hearing or hearing loss. Listeners rated several sound samples (i.e., music, running speech, and machinery noise) played through a PLD using earphones according to their sound preference (i.e., enjoyable, acceptable, and unpleasant) and then self-adjusted the volume setting to their LTL and PLL for a sound sample in each sound preference category. Results: Most listeners judged music (70%) as enjoyable, running speech (54%) as acceptable, and machinery noise (84%) as unpleasant. No significant differences were found in LTLs according to sound preference, but PLLs for enjoyable sounds occurred at significantly higher levels compared with those deemed acceptable or unpleasant. Conclusions: Listeners using PLDs perceived LTLs and PLLs differently according to their sound preferences. PLLs occurred at significantly higher volumes for sounds deemed enjoyable when using PLDs. The implication is that hearing health counseling should include information to PLD users on the potential of altered loudness perception with enjoyable sounds, which may lead to higher and riskier PLD listening levels. Background/Objectives: To determine the incidence of and risk factors for uncomfortable paresthesia and/or dysesthesia after tonic percutaneous spinal cord stimulator implantation. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the prospectively collected data of patients that had permanent percutaneous tonic spinal cord stimulators implanted. Our primary objective was to assess the prevalence of complications over a period of 24 months after the implantation of this device. Results: The mean post-implantation follow-up time was 27.3 months. The mean pain score before spinal cord stimulator implantation was 8.05, which was reduced to 3.6 after 24 months. The most common complications in our study sample were the need for revision and the development of unpleasant paresthesia, which were reported by 34.95% and 27.86% of patients, respectively. There was no association between paresthesia and age, sex, or body mass index (BMI). The only risk factor of statistical significance was current tobacco use (p = 0.001). Conclusions: The development of uncomfortable paresthesia after SCS is associated with considerable morbidity, particularly the explantation of SCS, despite adequate pain relief. Focusing on strategies, such as appropriate waveform selection, might reduce the incidence of uncomfortable paresthesia requiring revision or explantation. Current tobacco use appears to be a significant risk factor for the development of unpleasant paresthesia/dysesthesia when compared with non-tobacco and former tobacco users after tonic percutaneous spinal cord stimulator implantation. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an aging-related neurodegenerative disease characterized by a progressive loss of dopamine (DA)-secreting neurons in the substantia nigra. Most of the currently available treatments attempt to alleviate the disease symptoms by increasing DA transmission in the brain and are associated with unpleasant side effects. Since there are no treatments that modify the course of PD or regenerate DA neurons, identifying therapeutic strategies that slow, stop, or reverse cell death in PD is of critical importance. Here, factors that confer vulnerability of substantia nigra DA neurons to cell death and the primary mechanisms of PD pathogenesis, including cellular senescence, a cellular stress response that elicits a stable cell cycle arrest in mitotic cells and profound phenotypic changes including the implementation of a pro-inflammatory secretome, are reviewed. Additionally, a discussion of the characteristics, mechanisms, and markers of cellular senescence and the development of approaches to target senescent cells, referred to as senotherapeutics, is included. Although the senotherapeutics curcumin, fisetin, GSK-650394, and astragaloside IV had disease-modifying effects in in vitro and in vivo models of PD, the potential long-term side effects of these compounds remain unclear. It remains to be elucidated whether their beneficial effects will translate to non-human primate models and/or human PD patients. The enhanced selectivity, safety, and/or efficacy of next generation senotherapeutic strategies including senolytic peptides, senoreverters, proteolysis-targeting chimeras, pro-drugs, immunotherapy, and nanoparticles will also be reviewed. Although these next generation senotherapeutics may have advantages, none have been tried in models of PD. Full article

Background and Clinical Significance: Osteomas of the mastoid process are extremely rare tumors. In their development, they are usually asymptomatic, they can manifest with cosmetic deformity, pain, hearing loss, and weakness of the facial nerve. Case Presentation: We present a clinical case of a 13-year-old girl with complaints of swelling in the area behind the left pinna, which was painless but created a cosmetic defect and an unpleasant sensation. She reported no pain in the ear and no hearing loss. An otorhinolaryngological examination, an audiometry of the patient, and a computed tomography of the head, temporal bones, and middle and inner ear were performed. The test results showed that hearing was not affected, and the tumor in the area of the mastoid process was approximately 3 cm in diameter, sitting “on top” of the mastoid process. Extirpation of the osteoma was performed with a retroauricular approach. The patient had a short postoperative period without any complications. Conclusions: Mastoid osteomas are rare, benign, slow-growing, and frequently asymptomatic bone tumors. Other bone lesions of the mastoid region should be ruled out in the differential diagnosis. Surgery is the treatment of choice and should be performed in the presence of symptoms or for cosmetic reasons. Full article

Background and Clinical Significance: Altered pain perception is a diagnostic challenge for patients with a history of trauma and substance use. Familial dysautonomia (Riley-Day syndrome) may further complicate the sensory profiles. Case Presentation: We describe a male in his late twenties, originally from Central America, with a history of severe childhood trauma and chronic cannabis use, who reported diminished pain perception despite multiple injuries. Despite the absence of nociceptive pain (nociceptive hypoesthesia), abnormal sensations, such as tingling and itching (paresthesia), and occasionally unpleasant burning sensations (dysesthesia) were common symptoms in this case. Diagnosis: Clinical suspicion of familial dysautonomia was raised based on altered pain perception and minor autonomic signs. However, no genetic testing or neurological evaluation was performed. Psychological assessment revealed high levels of neuroticism, depression, and maladaptive coping. The Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI) and the Symptom Severity Scale (SS) further supported the presence of psychological symptoms suggestive of possible central sensitization. Outcome: Functional improvement was observed after a reduction in substance use and implementation of self-directed physical and cognitive rehabilitation. No standardized follow-up or formal interventions were recorded. Conclusions: This case illustrates the complexity of pain modulation in trauma-affected individuals and emphasizes the need for an integrative, interdisciplinary evaluation of atypical pain presentations.
