Air curtain systems have been proposed as a supplementary smoke control strategy for vehicle tunnels, particularly where structural constraints limit the installation or upgrading of conventional ventilation systems. However, most previous studies rely on numerical simulations or fixed experimental facilities, while flexible experimental platforms and the influence of vehicle obstruction on smoke behavior remain less explored. This study experimentally investigates the smoke confinement performance of an air curtain using a 1:18 modular detachable scaled vehicle tunnel model. The modular configuration enables flexible assembly and adjustment of the experimental setup for different test conditions. A series of laboratory experiments was conducted using a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) burner to simulate a vehicle fire. Temperature measurements and smoke visualization were performed under different air curtain jet velocities and vehicle obstruction conditions to analyze the interaction between the air curtain jet and buoyancy-driven smoke flow. The results show that the air curtain significantly restricts the upstream propagation of hot smoke and modifies the thermal field inside the tunnel. When the jet velocity reached approximately 5 m/s, the temperature in the protected region decreased by about 25–35% compared with the case without an air curtain. In addition, the presence of vehicle models altered the airflow structure and increased heat accumulation in the middle region of the tunnel cross-section. These results demonstrate that the proposed modular tunnel model provides a reliable experimental platform for tunnel fire research and highlights the importance of considering vehicle obstruction effects in tunnel smoke control studies. The deep foundation pit excavation of subway will cause horizontal displacement, uneven settlement and other adverse effects on the adjacent shield. The use of servo steel strut has a certain effect on deflection correction, but the current understanding of the influencing factors of deflection correction is not comprehensive. Based on structural and spatial symmetry, the influence of tunnel depth, tunnel and foundation pit clear distance and deformation control quantity of enclosure structure on deflection correction quantity was studied by symmetrically designed model test and numerical simulation, and the prediction formula of deflection correction quantity considering tunnel and foundation pit clear distance and deformation control quantity of enclosure structure was proposed. The results show that with an increase in the tunnel’s burial depth, deflection correction decreases significantly. When the tunnel is near the foundation pit bottom, there is no significant correction effect, and the control law of the tunnel ground pressure under the servo steel strut loading is consistent with the correction law. Deflection correction is negatively correlated with the tunnel and foundation pit clear distance, and positively correlated with the deformation control of the diaphragm wall. The curve of the deformation control of the enclosure structure and the deflection correction is parabolic. The deflection correction is an exponential function of the ratio of the deformation control of the enclosure structure to the clear distance between the tunnel and the foundation pit, and the servo deflection correction follows a normal distribution along the longitudinal axis of the tunnel, showing obvious symmetry characteristics in the foundation pit influence zone. During the excavation of the Qinling Water Conveyance Tunnel, rockbursts influenced by structural planes with varying dip angles occurred frequently, posing a significant threat to personnel and construction safety. This study combines statistical analysis of rockburst cases, numerical simulation, and microseismic monitoring to systematically reveal the influence mechanism of structural plane dip angle on rockbursts. Statistical results indicate that intense rockbursts occurring in the dip angle interval of 0–30° account for 60%. Numerical simulations further demonstrate that dip angles of less than 90° (especially near 10°) induce continuous stress accumulation, leading to large-scale instability. Specifically, the peak acoustic emission (AE) count at a dip angle of 10° is significantly higher than in other configurations, further indicating the highest rockburst risk. Incorporating the influence mechanism of structural plane dip angle into microseismic monitoring analysis significantly improved prediction accuracy. This approach successfully predicted an intense rockburst. Based on these findings, engineering suggestions regarding excavation direction and rockburst early warning optimization are proposed, offering a valuable reference for rockburst mitigation in deep-buried tunnels under similar geological conditions. In modern society, distributed photovoltaics are widely used, and overhead photovoltaic roofs are favored for their many advantages; however, they are vulnerable to failure during high-wind events. Parapets are common auxiliary structures on building rooftops. Wind tunnel testing was employed to investigate the effects of parapet configurations on wind pressures acting on overhead photovoltaic (PV) roofs. Results show that wind suction dominates, with maximum negative pressure consistently at the windward corner leading edge. A solid parapet significantly increases the maximum mean pressure coefficient, whereas perforated parapets have little effect. In most cases, parapets reduce fluctuating pressure coefficients. Extreme pressure distribution exhibits significant regional characteristics, with the most unfavorable area at the roof corner. The solid parapet increases unfavorable extreme values at the corner. Horizontal and rectangular grid parapets reduce extreme pressure coefficients at the high-eave corner with minimal impact on the low-eave corner, while the vertical parapet increases values at the low-eave corner. Under the conditions of this experiment, among the four parapet types, the horizontal and rectangular grid parapets have little effect on the mean wind pressure and significantly reduce the peak wind pressure, thereby helping to ensure the wind resistance safety of the photovoltaic roof. Deep-buried tunnels in urban environments require careful evaluation of their long-term interactions with the surrounding ground to ensure structural safety and sustainability. Taking the Beijing Eastern Sixth Ring Road renovation project as a case study, this research employs a fully coupled fluid–solid numerical approach to elucidate the long-term disturbance mechanisms associated with deep-buried shield tunneling. Specifically, the research quantifies spatio-temporal ground responses and characterizes the consolidation settlement mechanisms exacerbated by potential tunnel leakage. The results indicate that ground deformation is primarily governed by the intensity of tunnel leakage. When the waterproofing grade of the tunnel meets Grade I or II, leakage and surface settlement remain negligible. However, when a tunnel’s waterproofing grade deteriorates to Grade IV or lower, consolidation settlement increases significantly, becoming the dominant deformation mode. In addition, both the extent and severity of ground movement are highly sensitive to the geometrical boundaries of the strata and the relative depth of the tunnel. Larger permeable domains and deeper tunnels lead to wider pore pressure and stress disturbance zones, ultimately leading to more pronounced long-term settlement. Furthermore, soil permeability dictates the temporal evolution of the ground response, with poorly permeable layers exhibiting delayed fluid–solid re-equilibration. A critical threshold is observed when leakage rates align with or exceed the soil’s permeability, leading to a significant escalation in both the amplitude of subsidence and the time required to reach equilibrium. These findings offer valuable insights for the design, waterproofing, and long-term management of deep urban tunnels. Full article

To address the critical challenges of geological hazards, such as water and mud inrush, encountered during the construction of deep-buried tunnels in China, this study investigates the hydraulic properties of remolded mud-infill materials. A multi-scale approach, integrating indoor variable-head permeability tests with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), was employed to characterize the evolutionary patterns of the permeability coefficient (k). Specifically, the research evaluates the independent influences of moisture content, dry density, and confining pressure, alongside the synergistic coupling between dry density and hydration state. The results demonstrate the following: Under independent variable conditions, k exhibits a monotonic decline with increasing dry density and confining pressure while showing a positive correlation with moisture content, with the sensitivity varying significantly across different parameter regimes; under coupled effects, the permeability in both low- and high-moisture ranges manifests a distinct “increase–decrease–increase” fluctuation as dry density rises, reaching a local peak at 2.20 g/cm3. Notably, a relative minimum k (6.12 × 10−7 cm/s) is achieved at the optimum moisture content (5.8%); micro-mechanistic analysis reveals that low-moisture samples are characterized by randomized angular particles and well-developed interconnected macropore networks, facilitating higher k values. Conversely, high-moisture samples exhibit preferential plate-like stacking dominated by occluded micropores, resulting in a substantial reduction in hydraulic conductivity. This study elucidates the multi-factor coupling mechanism governing the seepage behavior of remolded mud, providing essential theoretical benchmarks for the prediction and mitigation of water–mud outburst disasters in deep underground engineering, thereby ensuring the structural stability and operational safety of tunnel projects. Deep soft-rock tunnels are prone to large deformations and structural damage. This study used the Guanyinping Tunnel as a prototype and conducted 1/50-scale progressive loading model tests under three support configurations: rock-bolt-free, equal-length rock bolts, and mixed long–short rock bolts. Rock stress, radial rock displacement (u), and rock bolt axial force (FN) at the vault, arch shoulders, sidewalls, and wall feet were monitored to reveal reinforcement mechanisms and mechanical response. The results indicated that stress evolution in the bolt-free case exhibited significant spatial heterogeneity. The vault experienced horizontal stress concentration, while the arch shoulder underwent vertical stress concentration. u underwent a three-stage nonlinear progression: elastic linear growth, plastic linear growth, and plastic-accelerated growth. Displacement at the vault was markedly larger than that at other locations. Equal-length rock bolts substantially improved the rock mass stability by delaying stress concentration and fracture propagation. This reinforcement raised the elastic response threshold to 96 kPa and substantially reduced u. FN at the vault and shoulder followed linear growth, accelerated growth, and then gradual decline, whereas FN at the sidewalls and wall feet exhibited a steady linear trend. Combined long and short rock bolts produced a multi-level anchoring effect. Short bolts induced a shallow arching action, while long bolts provided deep suspension. This synergy raised the elastic response threshold to a maximum of 120 kPa and moderated the stress reduction process. Deep residual stresses increased to 74.3–88.4% of peak values. The displacement gradient between shallow and deep rock masses was significantly reduced. The coordinated deformation capacity within the anchoring zone was markedly enhanced. FN distribution exhibited spatial differentiation: short bolts carried the load initially, followed by the activation of long bolts. Both anchoring schemes increased residual stress and mitigated rock mass deformation. The deformation control effect was stronger in shallow rock mass than in deep rock mass. Improvements at the vault and arch shoulders exceeded those at the sidewalls and wall feet. The mixed short–long bolt configuration was superior because it maximized the self-bearing capacity of the deep rock mass. The findings provide experimental data and theoretical guidance for the design and optimization of rock-bolt support in deep soft-rock tunnels. Full article

Dark current represents a fundamental limiting factor in photodiode performance, establishing the noise floor and constraining detectivity in low-light applications. This comprehensive literature review examines publications covering the physical mechanisms underlying dark current generation and diverse techniques employed for its reduction. Covered mechanisms include diffusion current, Shockley–Read–Hall (SRH) generation–recombination, trap-assisted tunneling, band-to-band tunneling, and surface leakage, each examined with respect to its physical origin and characteristic signatures. Reduction strategies are categorized into thermal management approaches, surface passivation techniques including atomic-layer-deposited aluminum oxide (ALD Al2O3), guard ring architectures (attached, floating, and combined configurations), gettering and defect engineering methods, doping profile optimization, bias voltage management, and advanced device architectures such as pinned photodiodes and black silicon structures. A classification table organizes all the reviewed literature by material system, reduction technique, and key findings. Special emphasis is placed on silicon, germanium, III–V compounds, and emerging material photodiodes relevant to near-infrared detection, CMOS imaging, single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs), and Time-of-Flight (ToF) applications. With the rapid urbanization in China, the spatial interaction between newly constructed underground structures and existing transportation tunnels has become increasingly frequent and complex. However, studies on the dynamic response characteristics of underground pedestrian passages subjected to the combined effects of metro- and vehicle-induced vibrations remain relatively limited. This study takes the newly constructed underground pedestrian passage at Want Want Hospital in Hunan Province as the engineering background. The pedestrian passage features a unique structural configuration, in which it is jointly constructed with an overlying vehicular tunnel through a shared slab and simultaneously crosses above an existing metro tunnel. To explore the vibration research methods for this unique structure, a three-dimensional finite element model was developed using ABAQUS and validated through in situ vibration measurements. Based on the validated model, the dynamic response of the pedestrian passage was systematically investigated from two perspectives: traffic loading conditions and shared slab thickness. The results show that metro-induced loads dominate the vibration response of the pedestrian passage. Bidirectional (reversible) train operation produces significantly greater vibration levels than unidirectional operation, and the Z-direction vibration level increases with train speed, with local exceedances occurring at 80 km/h. Under vehicle loading, the vibration response of the passage exhibits a non-monotonic trend, first increasing and then decreasing within the speed range of 30–40 km/h. When metro and vehicle loads act simultaneously, the vibration level is further amplified and exceeds the allowable limit. In addition, a pronounced vibration energy concentration zone is identified on the pedestrian passage bottom slab directly beneath the tunnel sidewalls, highlighting the necessity for targeted vibration mitigation in this region. Parametric analysis demonstrates that appropriately increasing the thickness of the vehicular tunnel bottom slab does not effectively reduce the vibration response. The findings of this study provide a reliable numerical analysis framework and practical design guidance for vibration control of complex overlapping underground structures in urban environments. NetworkGuard is a modular edge-based virtual network sensing framework designed for residential smart home security. The system interprets network telemetry—such as DNS queries, firewall events, VPN latency, and connection establishment delay—as structured sensing signals for gateway-level monitoring. Implemented on a Raspberry Pi 4 and managed via an Android interface, NetworkGuard integrates DNS filtering (Pi-hole), firewall enforcement (UFW), encrypted VPN tunneling (WireGuard), and an AI-assisted advisory layer for contextual log interpretation. During a six-week residential deployment, DNS blocking efficiency improved from 81.2% to 97.0% following blocklist refinement, while VPN connection establishment time decreased from approximately 3012 ms to 2410 ms after configuration tuning. ICMP-based measurements indicated a stable tunnel latency under moderate traffic conditions. Controlled validation scenarios—including DNS manipulation attempts, port scanning, and VPN interruption testing—confirmed consistent firewall enforcement and tunnel containment. The results demonstrate that layered security principles can be adapted into a lightweight, reproducible edge architecture suitable for small-scale residential IoT environments without a reliance on enterprise infrastructure. Emergent Higgs Field and the Schwarzschild Black Hole

The derivations presented in this paper suggest an intimate relationship between geometry and the electroweak sector at the Planck scale. A Lorentz-invariant maximally symmetric stochastically perturbed spacetime transformed to spherical coordinates reveals an emergent Schwarzschild metric, entirely a statistical structure of stochastic spacetime. Similarly, the transition from a maximally symmetric universe with a complex SU(2) scalar doublet ϕ, comprising four independent real scalar fields with a zero vacuum expectation value (VEV), to spherical coordinates at the Planck scale reveals the spontaneously broken electroweak (EW) sector. Working in the unitarity gauge, the resulting EW potential can be simultaneously mapped in space at the Planck scale and across the EW sector. In space, the resulting EW potential includes a deep well within the Schwarzschild sphere and a shallow well just outside corresponding to an accretion disk. The same potential mapped in the EW space provides an entire family of possible sombrero hat potentials with fourth-order coupling specific to a point in space. At the minimum points of the potential in space, inside the Schwarzschild sphere and at the accretion disk, the λ corresponding to the Standard Model (SM) fourth-order coupling is instead derived as λ5. The factor of 15 is a simple consequence of the conservation of the EW VEV and the fact that the SM formulation of the EW potential does not account for situations where the perturbations in ϕ dominate. A more general formulation of the EW potential restores the SM quartic coupling and preserves λ in space. An emergent Higgs field inside the Schwarzschild black hole is found to directly relate to the stochastic spacetime fields normalized by the Schwarzschild radius. The corresponding Higgs vacuum has both a ground and excited state and the possibility of both positive and negative vacuum entropy. Finally, the scalar-field VEV degeneracy in EW space of the metastable Higgs vacuum appears instead differentiated in space with possible probability, tunneling, and entropy implications. Dragon fruit (Hylocereus spp.) is an emerging crop in the tropics and subtropics, but its production is increasingly threatened by diseases that reduce yield and profitability. Early diagnosis of these diseases is crucial for timely intervention, yet visual symptoms often appear only after significant infection has occurred. The study aims to evaluate how optical spectral reflectance can detect dragon fruit diseases and identify the most responsive spectral regions. In this study, six major dragon fruit stem diseases: Neoscytalidium stem canker, stem sunburn, anthracnose, Botryosphaeria stem canker, Bipolaris stem rot, and bacterial soft rot were characterized by the goal of identifying unique spectral signatures for early detection and differentiation of each disease. Seventy-two potted dragon fruit plants of three distinct species were grown under four organic vermicompost treatments (0, 5, 10, 20 tons/acre) in both open-field and high-tunnel conditions together, in a randomized complete block design. A handheld spectroradiometer (350–2500 nm) was used to collect reflectance from the diseased and healthy cladodes (stem segment). Various spectral vegetative indices were computed to identify disease-specific features. The results revealed distinct spectral features for each disease. Infected cladodes consistently exhibited higher reflectance especially in the visible region (400–700 nm) and the near-infrared region (900–2500 nm) of the spectrum than healthy cladodes. The Normalized Difference Vegetative Index (NDVI), Green Normalized Difference Vegetative Index (GNDVI), and Spectral Ratio (SR) spectral indices were significantly higher in healthy plants than in diseased ones, reflecting higher chlorophyll concentration and plant biomass. Conversely, the 1110/810 ratio was lower in healthy plants than in diseased plants, suggesting a more compact internal plant structure. Statistical analysis revealed highly significant differences (p < 0.00001) between healthy and diseased spectra in the Red, Green and NIR regions. Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA) achieved the highest classification accuracy (OA = 0.642, κ = 0.488), though performance was limited for minority classes. These findings demonstrate that targeted spectral sensing can identify dragon fruit diseases before obvious symptoms emerge. By pinpointing disease-specific spectral indices, our study paves the way for early-warning tools such as targeted multispectral sensors or drone-based imaging that would enable growers to intervene sooner and limit losses. These results highlight the potential for development of UAV-based or portable spectral sensors for large-scale, near real-time disease monitoring in dragon fruit production. Full article

To address the challenge of surrounding rock instability in deep-buried tunnels crossing fractured fault zones, this study focuses on the Xigu Tunnel of the Lanzhou–Hezuo Railway. A combination of laboratory triaxial tests, an optimized multi-source advanced geological prediction workflow, and a site-specific parameter-weakened Mohr–Coulomb numerical simulation is employed to systematically reveal the physical–mechanical properties, spatial distribution, and deformation response of fractured rock masses under excavation-induced disturbance. The triaxial test results show that the average peak strength of the surrounding rock reaches 149.04 MPa; however, significant variability is observed among samples, and the failure mode exhibits a typical brittle–shear composite feature. The measured cohesion and internal friction angle are 20.57 MPa and 49.91°, respectively, indicating high intrinsic strength of individual rock blocks. Nevertheless, due to the presence of densely developed joints and crushed structures, the overall mass is loose and highly sensitive to dynamic disturbances such as blasting and excavation, revealing a unique mechanical paradox of high-strength rock blocks with low overall rock mass stability in deep-buried fractured zones. Joint TSP (Tunnel Seismic Prediction Ahead) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) prediction reveals decreased P-wave velocity, increased Poisson’s ratio, and intensive seismic reflection interfaces; a quantitative index system for identifying the boundaries of narrow deep-buried fractured zones is proposed based on these geophysical characteristics. Combined with geological face mapping, these results confirm the existence of a highly fractured zone approximately 130 m in width, characterized by well-developed joints, heterogeneous mechanical properties, and localized risks of blockfall and groundwater ingress. The developed numerical model, with parameters weakened based on triaxial test and geological prediction data, effectively reproduces the deformation law of the fractured zone, and the simulation results agree well with field monitoring data, with peak displacement concentrated at section DK4 + 595, thus accurately identifying the center of the fractured belt as a key engineering validation result of the integrated technical framework. During construction, based on the identified spatial characteristics of the fractured zone and the proposed targeted support insight, enhanced dynamic monitoring and targeted support measures at the fractured zone center are required to ensure structural safety and long-term stability of the tunnel. This study develops an integrated engineering-oriented technical framework for deep-buried tunnels crossing narrow fractured zones, and provides novel mechanical insights and quantitative identification indices for such complex geological engineering scenarios. In response to the need to monitor groundwater migration and structural damage to rock strata during tunnel excavation and coal mining, this paper presents a novel electromagnetic detection system that features continuous ground-based transmission and full-waveform underground observation. As the transmitted waveform is crucial for determining the distribution of induced eddy currents and the characteristics of the secondary field response, studying these response characteristics is essential for the system’s practical application. This study selects four typical transmission waveforms—step, triangular, half-sine and trapezoidal—and uses a tetrahedral, three-dimensional grid discretization method to analyze the transient electromagnetic full-wave response patterns of electrical and magnetic sources under different waveform excitations. This elucidates the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic fields in the medium. The research reveals that the waveform type during energization significantly influences the electromagnetic response, with the full-wave response characteristics of electrical and magnetic sources differing significantly in the near-source region and response trends converging in the far-source region. In practical detection, combining the advantages of the three-component responses of the electrical and magnetic sources can effectively improve detection accuracy. The findings of this study provide important theoretical support for optimizing the design of transient electromagnetic detection systems and precisely interpreting detection data. They also lay a theoretical foundation for electromagnetic detection applications in fields such as mineral resource exploration and engineering geological surveys. Full article

The construction of suspension bridges in mountainous expressways often involves tunnel-type anchorages in close proximity to shallow-buried bifurcated tunnels, particularly in soft rock strata with dense overlying structures. This proximity poses significant challenges to construction safety and stability. This study aims to investigate the influence of tunnel-type anchorage construction on the ground surface, surrounding rock, and adjacent bifurcated tunnels under such complex conditions. It was hypothesized that the anchorage load transfer and deformation mechanisms would significantly affect the adjacent tunnel, with potential cumulative effects due to the twin-anchor configuration. To address this, a combined approach of in situ scaled model testing (1:10 scale) and three-dimensional numerical simulation was employed. The model test incorporated monitoring of deformation and stress at key locations (anchor plug, rock mass, and anchor–rock interface) under incremental cable loads. Quantitative results from the model test indicate that at the design load (1P, equivalent to 2016.84 kN per anchor), deformations were minimal (e.g., maximum anchor displacement 0.35 mm). The anchor–rock interface exhibited limited slip (max 0.06 mm at 1P), and contact stresses were highest in the rear part of the anchor plug, indicating a non-uniform load transfer. Under overload conditions, the system reached yield at 7P and peak strength at 10.5P, with measured ground surface cracks up to 5 mm. Numerical simulations, calibrated against the experimental data, revealed that under increasing load (up to 10P), the plastic zones around the two anchors progressively expanded and eventually coalesced, leading to a characteristic “inverted trapezoid” failure pattern propagating to the surface, accompanied by shear failure along the 14° bedding plane. The combined results quantify the progressive interaction between the twin anchorages and the surrounding rock, highlighting the critical role of the anchor–rock interface and the cumulative effect of twin anchors on ground deformation and potential failure mechanisms. This research provides a scientific basis for the design and construction of tunnel-type anchorages in similar challenging geological and spatial settings. Full article
