An analysis of the existing methods of sintering diamond-containing composites is presented. On the basis of mathematical modeling and experimental studies, the conditions of the laser liquid-phase sintering of diamond-containing composites under which they retain their strength are determined. The energy and technological parameters of the laser irradiation process are characterized, which determine the range of laser processing modes within which no oxidation and crack formation occur, and a high-quality composite with specified geometrical parameters is formed. It has been proven that composites consisting of synthetic diamond grains and a metal bond do not lose strength under the condition that the temperature during laser heating does not exceed 1600 °C and the exposure time is 0.3 s. Electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry were used for experimental studies of the microstructure and phase composition of the sintered layers. A new design and manufacturing method for a drum-type abrasive tool with replaceable diamond inserts for grinding large-sized aircraft and shipbuilding products are proposed. Components of a laser technological complex for the implementation of the process of sintering the diamond-containing layer of the abrasive inserts of the drum have been developed. Full article

Composite grids serve as reinforcement in concrete structures, offering alternatives to conventional steel reinforcement. These grids can be fabricated from various materials, including synthetic polymers, metals, and natural fibers. This study explores the use of composite grids as lateral confinement of self-compacting concrete (SCC) cylinders and examines their impact on the failure mode under axial compression. In the experiment, the types of grids and mesh shapes used were plastic grids of diamond mesh (PGD) and regular mesh (PGT), metallic grids of diamond mesh (MGD) and square mesh (MGS), vegetable grids of Alfa fiber mesh, 10 × 10 mm (VGAF-1) and 20 × 20 mm (VGAF-2), and vegetable grids of date palm fibers (VGDF). The binder of SCC mixtures incorporated 10% marble powder as a partial replacement for ordinary Portland cement (OPC). SCC mixtures were tested in the fresh state by measuring the slump flow diameter, V-funnel flow time, L-box blocking ratio, and segregation index. Cylinders with a diameter of 160 mm and a height of 320 mm were made to assess the mechanical properties of hardened SCC mixtures under axial compression. The results indicate that most of the confined cylinders exhibited an increase in ductility compared to unconfined cylinders. Grid types MGD and PGD provided the best performance, with ductility increases of 100.33% and 96.45%, respectively. VGAF-2 cylinders had greater compressive strength than cylinders with other grid types. The findings revealed that the type and mesh shape of the grids affects the failure mode of confined cylinders, but has minimal influence on their modulus of elasticity. This study highlights the potential of lateral grid confinement as a technique for rehabilitating, strengthening, and reinforcing weaker structural concrete elements, thereby improving their mechanical properties and extending the service life of building structures. An efficient way to improve the properties of metal–diamond composites (mechanical strength, wear resistance, thermal conductivity) is the preliminary modification of the diamond surface to improve its wettability by the metal matrix. In the present work, Mo2C-containing coatings were deposited on the diamond crystals under different conditions: hot pressing (atmosphere of argon), spark plasma sintering (forevacuum), and annealing in air. The influence of the sintering parameters on the morphology and phase composition of the coatings deposited on diamond was studied. Mo2C-containing coatings were selectively deposited on the facets of synthetic diamond microcrystals by annealing of the latter with a molybdenum powder. Experiments were carried out to deposit coatings under different conditions: during hot pressing (argon atmosphere), spark plasma sintering (forevacuum), and annealing in air. The process parameters were the temperature, holding time, and concentration of molybdenum in the initial mixture. Experiments with a pre-oxidized molybdenum powder were also conducted. The coated diamond crystals were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The deposition was enabled by the gas phase transport of molybdenum dioxide, MoO2, contained in the starting powder. The following sequence of the coating formation stages was proposed. First, MoO2 sublimes and is adsorbed mainly on the {100} facets of diamond. Then, it is reduced to metallic molybdenum by carbon of the diamond, which further reacts with carbon to form the Mo2C carbide phase. These processes occurred during treatment of the mixtures in the hot press and the spark plasma sintering facility. When the mixture was annealed in air, no selective deposition was observed. During annealing, MoO3 particles adhered to the diamond surface. Full article

This article presents research on the structural and mechanical properties of an innovative metal matrix composite (MMC) coating designed for use in conditions of intense metal-mineral abrasive wear. The layer, which is intended to protect the working surface of drilling tools used in the oil and natural gas extraction sector, was padded using the multi-run technique on a sheet made of AISI 4715 low-alloy structural steel by Laser Direct Metal Deposition (LDMD) using a high-power fiber laser (FL). An innovative cobalt alloy matrix powder with a ceramic reinforcement of crushed titanium carbide (TiC) and tungsten-coated synthetic polycrystalline diamond (PCD) was used as the surfacing material. The influence of the preheating temperature of the base material on the susceptibility to cracking and abrasive wear of the composite coating was assessed. The structural properties of the coating were characterized by using methods such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The mechanical properties of the hardfaced coating were assessed on the basis of the results of a metal-mineral abrasive wear resistance test, hardness measurement, and the observation of the abrasion area with a scanning laser microscope. The results of laboratory tests showed a slight dissolution of the tungsten coating protecting the synthetic PCD particles and the transfer of its components into the metallic matrix of the composite. Moreover, it was proved that an increase in the preheating temperature of the base material prior to welding has a positive effect on reducing the susceptibility of the coating to cracking, reducing the porosity of the metal deposit and increasing the resistance to abrasive wear. This article is the last of a series of publications included in the MDPI special edition entitled “Innovative Technologies and Materials for the Production of Mechanical, Thermal and Corrosion Wear-Resistant Surface Layers and Coatings”. Powder plasma-transferred arc welding (PPTAW) was used to surface metal matrix composite (MMC) layers using a mixture of cobalt (Co3) and nickel (Ni3) alloy powders. These powders contained different proportions and types of hard reinforcing phases in the form of ceramic carbides (TiC and WC-W2C), titanium diboride (TiB2), and of tungsten-coated synthetic polycrystalline diamond (PD-W). The resistance of the composite layers to cracking under the influence of dynamic loading was determined using Charpy hammer impact tests. The results showed that the various interactions between the ceramic particles and the metal matrix significantly affected the formation process and porosity of the composite surfacing welds on the AISI 4715 low-alloy structural steel substrate. They also affected the distribution and proportion of reinforcing-phase particles in the matrix. The size, shape, and type of the ceramic reinforcement particles and the surfacing weld density significantly impacted the brittleness of the padded MMC layer. The fracture toughness increased upon decreasing the particle size of the hard reinforcing phase in the nickel alloy matrix and upon increasing the composite density. The calculated mean critical stress intensity factor KIc of the steel samples with deposited layers of cobalt alloy reinforced with TiC and PD-W particles was 4.3 MPa⋅m12 higher than that of the nickel alloy reinforced with TiC and WC-W2C particles. The article is the continuation of a cycle of works published in a Special Issue of MDPI entitled “Innovative Technologies and Materials for the Production of Mechanical, Thermal and Corrosion Wear-Resistant Surface Layers and Coatings” related to tests concerning the microstructure and mechanical properties of innovative surface layers made using the Powder Plasma Transferred Arc Welding (PPTAW) method and intended for work surfaces of drilling tools and machinery applied in the extraction industry. A layer subjected to tests was a metal matrix composite, made using powder based on a nickel alloy containing spherical fused tungsten carbide (SFTC) particles, which are fused tungsten carbide (FTC) particles and spherical particles of tungsten-coated synthetic metal–diamond composite (PD-W). The layer was deposited on the substrate of low-alloy structural steel grade AISI 4715. The results showed that the chemical composition of the metallic powder as well as the content of the hard phase constituting the matrix enabled the making of a powder filler material characterised by very good weldability and appropriate melting. It was also found that the structure of the Ni-WC-PD-W layer was complex and that proper claddings (characterised by the uniform distribution of tungsten carbide (WC)) were formed in relation to specific cladding process parameters. In addition, the structure of the composite layer revealed the partial thermal and structural decomposition of tungsten carbide, while the particles of the synthetic metal–diamond composite remained coherent. The deposited surface layer was characterised by favourable resistance to moderate dynamic impact loads with a potential energy of 200 J, yet at the same time, by over 12 times lower metal–mineral abrasive wear resistance than the previously tested surface layer made of cobalt-based composite powder, the matrix of which contained the hard phase composed of TiC particles and synthetic metal–diamond composite. The lower abrasive wear resistance could result from a different mechanism responsible for the hardening of the spherical particles of the hard phase susceptible to separation from the metal matrix, as well as from a different mechanism of tribological wear. The article discusses test results concerning an innovative surface layer obtained using the cladding with powder plasma transferred arc welding (PPTAW) method. The above-named layer, being a metal matrix composite (MCM), is characterised by high abrasive wear resistance, resistance to pressure and impact loads, and the possibility of operation at elevated temperatures. The layer was made using powder in the form of a cobalt alloy-based composite reinforced with monocarbide TiC particles and superhard spherical particles of synthetic metal–diamond composite provided with tungsten coating. The surface layer was deposited on a sheet made of low-alloy structural steel grade AISI 4715. The layer is intended for surfaces of inserts of drilling tools used in the extraction industry. The results showed the lack of the thermal and structural decomposition of the hard layer reinforcing the matrix during the cladding process, its very high resistance to metal-mineral abrasive wear and its resistance to moderate impact loads. The abrasive wear resistance of the deposited layer with particles of TiC and synthetic metal–diamond composite was about than 140 times higher than the abrasive wear resistance of abrasion resistant heat-treated steel having a nominal hardness of 400 HBW. The use of diamond as a metal matrix reinforcement in order to increase the abrasive resistance of the PPTAW overlay layer is a new and innovative area of inquiry. There is no information related to tests concerning metal matrix surface layers reinforced with synthetic metal–diamond composite and obtained using PPTAW method. Full article

Isotopic and trace element variations within single diamond crystals are widely known from both natural stones and synthetic crystals. A number of processes can produce variations in carbon isotope composition and nitrogen abundance in the course of diamond crystallization. Here, we present evidence of carbon and nitrogen fractionation related to the growing surfaces of a diamond. We document that difference in the carbon isotope composition between cubic and octahedral growth sectors is solvent-dependent and varies from 0.7‰ in a carbonate system to 0.4‰ in a metal-carbon system. Ab initio calculations suggest up to 4‰ instantaneous 13C depletion of cubic faces in comparison to octahedral faces when grown simultaneously. Cubic growth sectors always have lower nitrogen abundance in comparison to octahedral sectors within synthetic diamond crystals in both carbonate and metal-carbon systems. The stability of any particular growth faces of a diamond crystal depends upon the degree of carbon association in the solution. Octahedron is the dominant form in a high-associated solution while the cube is the dominant form in a low-associated solution. Fine-scale data from natural crystals potentially can provide information on the form of carbon, which was present in the growth media. Full article

Progress in Tribological Properties of Nano-Composite Hard Coatings under Water Lubrication

The tribological properties, under water-lubricated conditions, of three major nano-composite coatings, i.e., diamond-like carbon (DLC or a-C), amorphous carbon nitride (a-CNx) and transition metallic nitride-based (TiN-based, CrN-based), coatings are reviewed. The influences of microstructure (composition and architecture) and test conditions (counterparts and friction parameters) on their friction and wear behavior under water lubrication are systematically elucidated. In general, DLC and a-CNx coatings exhibit superior tribological performance under water lubrication due to the formation of the hydrophilic group and the lubricating layer with low shear strength, respectively. In contrast, TiN-based and CrN-based coatings present relatively poor tribological performance in pure water, but are expected to present promising applications in sea water because of their good corrosion resistance. No matter what kind of coatings, an appropriate selection of counterpart materials would make their water-lubricated tribological properties more prominent. Currently, Si-based materials are deemed as beneficial counterparts under water lubrication due to the formation of silica gel originating from the hydration of Si. In the meantime, the tribological properties of nano-composite coatings in water could be enhanced at appropriate normal load and sliding velocity due to mixed or hydrodynamic lubrication. At the end of this article, the main research that is now being developed concerning the development of nano-composite coatings under water lubrication is described synthetically. Full article
