A biomimetic adaptive façade applies natural principles to building design using shading devices that dynamically respond to environmental changes, enhancing daylight, thermal comfort, and energy efficiency. While motorised systems offer precision through sensors and mechanical actuation, they consume energy and are complex. In contrast, passively actuated systems use smart materials that respond to environmental stimuli, offering simpler and more sustainable operation, but often lack responsiveness to dynamic conditions. This study explores a sequential approach by initially developing motorised shading concepts before transitioning to a passive actuation strategy. In the first phase, nine mechanically actuated shading device concepts were designed, inspired by the opening and closing behaviour of plant stomata, and evaluated on structural robustness, actuation efficiency, ease of installation, and visual integration. One concept was selected for further development. In the second phase, a biocomposite made of polylactic acid (PLA) and regenerated cellulose fibres was used for Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) to fabricate 3D-printed modules with passive, moisture-responsive actuation. The modules underwent environmental testing, demonstrating repeatable shape changes in response to heat and moisture. Moisture application increased the range of motion, and heating led to flap closure as water evaporated. Reinforcement and layering strategies were also explored to optimise movement and minimise unwanted deformation, highlighting the material’s potential for sustainable, responsive façade systems. In the context of the digital transformation of healthcare organisations, this study investigates the critical role of sustained learning, employee readiness, and supportive learning conditions to enable digital service offerings. Drawing on dynamic capabilities theory, we conceptualise and empirically test a multilevel model, exploring how sustained learning behaviour and mindset shape the Ability–Motivation–Opportunity (AMO) framework at the individual level. Furthermore, we analyse how workplace learning mediates the relationship between AMO on service outcomes at an organisational level, with sector affiliation as a moderating factor. Data were collected from 856 participants with online surveys and analysed with PLS-SEM. The results confirmed that sustained learning significantly enhances individual readiness (ability, motivation, and opportunity), which in turn positively influences digital services. Workplace learning was found to be a potent mediator, and sector affiliation significantly moderated the relationship between workforce enhancement and digital service outcomes. These findings underline the importance of embedding an employee sustained learning mindset and behaviour as an organisational capability, beyond technical implementation. The results suggest that a successful digital transformation hinges on cognitive and behavioural learning engagement, supported by supportive learning structures and context-specific strategies. This paper presents a novel submersible seaweed cultivation infrastructure designed to enhance seaweed growth through deep cycling. The system consists of a square grid of ropes for growing seaweed, supported by buoys, mooring lines, and innovative SubTractors—movable buoys that enable controlled submersion. The grid ropes are stabilized by four SubTractors, an array of small buoys, intermediate sinker weights and mooring lines anchored to the seabed. The SubTractors facilitate dynamic positioning, allowing the seaweed rope grid to be submerged below the thermocline—at depths of 100 m or more—where nutrient-rich deep water accelerates seaweed growth in offshore sites with low surface nutrient levels. Small buoys attached to the grid provide buoyancy, keeping the seaweed rope grid planar and near the surface to optimize photosynthesis when not submerged. This paper first describes the seaweed cultivation infrastructure, then develops a hydroelastic model of the proposed cultivation system, followed by a hydroelastic analysis under varying wave and current conditions. The results provide insights into the system’s dynamic behaviour, informing engineering design and structural optimization. Full article

Grazing systems’ production efficiency is a dynamic interaction between soil, pasture, livestock, and climate. The magnitude of the changes is related to the mechanical stress applied by the livestock and their feeding behaviour. In Southern Chile, dairy cattle present a high heterogeneity in breeds, size, live weight, and milk production. This study investigated whether cows of contrasting size/live weight can improve degraded pasture and positively modify soil (Andosol-Duric Hapludand) physical features. Three pasture types were used as follows: (i) cultivated fertilised Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass) and Trifolium repens L. (white clover) mixture (BM); (ii) cultivated fertilised L. perenne, T. repens, Bromus valdivianus Phil. (pasture brome), Holcus lanatus L. (Yorkshire fog), and Dactylis glomerata L. (cocksfoot) mixture (MSM); and (iii) naturalised fertilised pasture Agrostis capillaris L. (browntop), B. valdivianus, and T. repens (NFP). Pastures were grazed with two groups of dairy cows of contrasting size and live weight: light cows (LC) [live weight: 464 ± 5.4 kg; height at the withers: 132 ± 0.6 cm (average ± s.e.m.)] and heavy cows (HC) [live weight: 600 ± 8.7 kg; height at the withers: 141 ± 0.9 cm (average ± s.e.m.)]. Hoof area was measured, and the pressure applied by cows on the soil was calculated. Soil differences in penetration resistance (PR) and macro-porosity (wCP > 50 μm) between pastures were explained by tillage and seeding, rather than as a result of livestock presence and movement (animal trampling). The PR variation during the year was associated with the soil water content (SWC). Grazing dairy cows of contrasting live weight caused changes in soil and pasture attributes, and they behaved differently during grazing. Light cows were linked to more intense grazing, a stable soil structure, and pastures with competitive species and greater tiller density. In MSM, pasture consumption increased, and the soil was more resilient to hoof compression. In general, grazing with heavy cows in these three different pasture systems did not negatively impact soil physical properties. These findings indicate that volcanic soils are resilient and that during renovation, the choice of pasture type has a greater initial impact on soil structure than the selection of cow size, but incorporating lighter cows can be a strategy to promote denser pasture swards in these grazing systems. This study examines the alignment between the European Union’s climate policy rhetoric and the actual fossil fuel consumption behaviours of its Member States. By combining long-term and short-term time-series data with machine learning classification techniques, the analysis captures dynamic national energy trends and decarbonisation signals. Key innovations include the use of slope acceleration metrics and the identification of label reversals to detect volatility, acceleration, or stagnation in transition trajectories. The results show that, while some countries such as France and Denmark demonstrate consistent structural progress, others show deceleration or reversal, particularly in the use of gas and liquid fuels. This indicates that the relationship between EU-level policy ambition and national implementation is asymmetric and conditionally aligned. This study concludes that ongoing empirical monitoring and targeted diagnostics are essential to prevent conflating symbolic commitments with material change, and provides practical insights for improving climate policy accountability and adaptability across the EU. In southern white rhinoceroses (Ceratotherium simum simum), pant calls are well-studied contact vocalisations, whereas the function of frequently emitted snorts remains unclear. We conducted playback experiments with 15 rhinoceroses at three European zoos. The first experiment tested responses to conspecific versus heterospecific snorts, comparing pulsed and non-pulsed acoustic structures. The second experiment contrasted conspecific snorts with conspecific pants from males differing in age and faecal testosterone metabolite (fTM) levels. Behavioural responses—including body orientation, approach toward loudspeaker, locomotion, and vocalisations—were analysed. Snorts, regardless of sender species or pulsation, elicited uniformly low-intensity responses, suggesting limited communicative function. In contrast, pants evoked significantly stronger responses depending on sex and group setting. While males showed increased locomotion, females vocalised more, reflecting the species’ social dynamics. Individuals tested alone displayed overall heightened vigilance and vocal activity compared to those tested in pairs, emphasising the role of social context. No evidence was found for discrimination between pant calls differing in fTM levels. Our findings reinforce the communicative relevance of pants in conveying social cues while indicating that snorts may either lack species-specific acoustic markers or not be socially salient. Playback experiments thus appear as valuable tools for assessing acoustic communication in zoo-housed mammals. Full article

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of integrity-related considerations, such as ethics, privacy, protection, security, and trust, on online consumer shopping intention within the interactive marketing environment. To achieve this, the research uses partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), analysing data from a sample of 260 respondents collected through an online survey. The findings reveal that protection is the most influential factor driving consumer buying intentions, followed by trust, ethics and security. Privacy, while significant, has a more moderate influence on consumer behaviour compared to other factors. The study makes a key theoretical contribution by advancing the understanding of how these constructs interact to shape consumer behaviour in the digital marketplace, particularly highlighting the importance of data protection and ethical practices. Practically, the research offers actionable recommendations for e-commerce businesses, based on building a digital integrity model, suggesting the focus on enhancing data security and ethical transparency to build consumer trust. Furthermore, the findings highlight the need for policymakers to strengthen data privacy regulations and harmonise international security standards in e-commerce. Future research should consider longitudinal studies and explore these dynamics in different regulatory environments. Full article

The objective of this article is to provide a critical analysis of maritime heterotopia as a category for reinterpreting ships, shipwrecks and maritime landscapes between the 16th and 18th centuries. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining history, underwater archaeology, heritage theory and literary analysis, it explores the ways in which maritime spaces, especially ships and shipwrecks, functioned as ‘other spaces’–following Foucault’s concept of heterotopia–in the articulation of imperial projects, power relations, experiences of transit and narratives of memory. A particular focus has been placed on the examination of shipwreck accounts, which are regarded as microhistories of human behaviour in contexts of crisis. These accounts have been shown to offer insights into alternative social structures, dynamics of authority, and manifestations of violence or solidarity. A review of the legal framework and practices related to shipwrecks in the Spanish Carrera de Indias is also undertaken, with particular emphasis on their impact on maritime legislation and international law. This article proposes a reading of maritime heritage as a symbolic and political device in constant dispute, where material remains and associated narratives shape collective memories, geopolitical tensions and new forms of cultural appropriation. Shipwrecks thus become sites of rupture and origin, charged with utopian, dystopian and heterotopic potential. Full article

Urban soundscapes are increasingly recognized as fundamental for both ecological integrity and human well-being, yet the complex interplay between the vegetation structure, seasonal dynamics, and microclimatic factors in shaping these soundscapes remains poorly understood. This study tests the hypothesis that vegetation structure and seasonally driven biological activity mediate the balance and the quality of the urban acoustic environment. We investigated seasonal and spatial variations in five acoustic indices (NDSI, ACI, AEI, ADI, and BI) within a historical urban garden in Castelfranco Veneto, Italy. Using linear mixed-effects models, we analyzed the effects of season, microclimatic variables, and vegetation characteristics on soundscape composition. Non-parametric tests were used to assess spatial differences in vegetation metrics. Results revealed strong seasonal patterns, with spring showing increased NDSI (+0.17), ADI (+0.22), and BI (+1.15) values relative to winter, likely reflecting bird breeding phenology and enhanced biological productivity. Among microclimatic predictors, temperature (p < 0.001), humidity (p = 0.014), and solar radiation (p = 0.002) showed significant relationships with acoustic indices, confirming their influence on both animal behaviour and sound propagation. Spatial analyses showed significant differences in acoustic patterns across points (Kruskal–Wallis p < 0.01), with vegetation metrics such as tree density and evergreen proportion correlating with elevated biophonic activity. Although the canopy height model did not emerge as a significant predictor in the models, the observed spatial heterogeneity supports the role of vegetation in shaping urban sound environments. By integrating ecoacoustic indices, LiDAR-derived vegetation data, and microclimatic parameters, this study offers novel insights into how vegetational components should be considered to manage urban green areas to support biodiversity and foster acoustically restorative environments, advancing the evidence base for sound-informed urban planning. Background: Midwifery leadership is central to delivering safe, high-quality maternity care. Yet despite sustained investment in leadership development and governance frameworks, UK national reviews consistently identify leadership as a weakness. Understanding why this persists is vital to achieving meaningful improvement. Objective: This paper offers a reflective commentary on the challenges of midwifery leadership in the UK, drawing on national evidence, leadership theory, and professional experience. Methods: A reflective commentary approach was adopted, informed by over 30 years of practice across clinical, academic, and national improvement roles. The discussion integrates insights from national maternity inquiries, academic literature, international comparisons, and leadership theories including compassionate, courageous, and adaptive leadership. Findings: Structural and cultural barriers—including workforce shortages, rising clinical complexity, tensions between midwifery- and medically led models of care, and punitive governance systems—limit the effectiveness of midwifery leadership. These conditions erode psychological safety, fuel attrition, and constrain succession planning. Reflection on professional experience highlights the impact of these dynamics on leaders’ ability to act with confidence and influence. Evidence also points to the value of relational, values-based behaviours—compassion, courage, adaptability, and systems thinking—in enhancing resilience and outcomes. International examples show that supportive policy environments and greater autonomy enable midwifery leadership to thrive. Conclusions: Midwifery leadership requires both individual capability and structural support. Practical priorities include dismantling punitive cultures, embedding Safety-II approaches, investing in leadership development, and enabling professional autonomy. Without such systemic reform, the ambitions of the NHS Long Term Plan will remain at risk, regardless of individual leaders’ skills. Full article

Mechanistic cancer models can encapsulate beliefs about the main factors influencing tumour growth. In recent decades, many different types of dynamic models have been used for this purpose. The integration of a model’s differential equations yields a simulation of the behaviour of the system over time, thus enabling tumour progression to be predicted. A requisite for the reliability of these quantitative predictions is that the model is structurally identifiable and observable, i.e., that it is theoretically possible to infer the correct values of its parameters and state variables from time course data. In this paper, we show how to analyse these properties of tumour growth models using a well-established methodology, which we implemented previously in an open-source software tool. To this end, we provide an account of 20 published models described by ordinary differential equations, some of which incorporate the effect of interventions including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. For each model, we describe its equations and analyse their structural identifiability and observability, discussing how they are affected by the experimental design. We provide computational implementations of these models, which enable readily reproducing results. Our results inform about the possibility of inferring the parameters and state variables of a given model using a specific measurement setup, and, together with the corresponding methodology and implementation, they can be used as a blueprint for analysing other models not included here. Thus, this paper serves as a guide to select the most appropriate model for each application. Full article

Fish-derived collagen can reduce the risk of disease transmission and has no religious or cultural restrictions. However, it has limited applications due to its poor thermal stability. In this study, black carp swim bladder collagen (BBC), classified as a type I collagen, was extracted. Amino acid composition analysis revealed that BBC had a higher proline hydroxylation rate of 39.57%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that BBC exhibited a complete triple-helix structure. The fractional viscosity curve and differential scanning calorimetry curves revealed that the thermal denaturation temperature (Td) and the melting temperature (Tm) were 30.85 °C and 107.19 °C, respectively. The dynamic rheological analysis showed that as the concentration increased from 5 mg/mL to 20 mg/mL at 0.01 Hz, the storage modulus increased from 0.979 Pa to 84.2 Pa. When the temperature exceeded the Td, the BBC solution exhibited viscous behaviour as the frequency increased. The steady-shear analysis showed that the BBC was a shear-thinning fluid. Functional properties analysis revealed that BBC exhibited better emulsification properties, foaming properties, water absorption capacity and oil absorption capacity than land-derived collagen, making it suitable for emulsifiers, bubbling beverages, and frozen meat preservation. Additionally, BBC promoted the growth of MT3C3-E1 cells and maintained the normal morphology of the cells. These results showed that BBC is a promising substitute for terrestrial collagen in functional foods, cosmetics, and biofunctional materials. Full article

External Drivers of Dominant Green Positioning for Organic Food Brands: Evidence from an Emerging Market

Growing consumer interest in personal health and environmental sustainability has driven a significant number of companies to enter the organic food market. While this offers valuable opportunities, companies face substantial challenges in making marketing decisions which are aligned with the specific characteristics of this sector. This paper studies the impact of three external drivers—environmental customer pressure, environmental competitive intensity, and environmental regulatory pressure—on companies’ decision to adopt a dominant green positioning strategy within the Romanian organic food market. To this end, an online survey was conducted among 77 companies, including producers, processors, distributors, and retailers, all of which own an organic food brand. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was applied to assess the measurement model and test the hypothesised structural relationships. Our findings confirm that customer pressure plays a significant role in shaping green brand positioning decisions. Accordingly, companies must be responsive to consumer expectations, even in the absence of strict regulations in Romania’s organic food sector guiding organisational behaviour. Furthermore, competitive dynamics were also found to be vital, as evidenced by the positive and direct relationship between environmental competitive intensity and the strategic green positioning decision examined. Scaffolds are temporary structures that workers usually use during building or repair work. These structures can be built in different shapes and types depending on the type of joints to which the beams and columns of the scaffolds are connected. Due to their temporary nature, they are very sensitive to vibration under dynamic or static actions, and this causes many accidents and unstable behaviours in them. This unstable behaviour has different reasons, including bracing conditions and slenderness of the columns, stiffness of joints and anchors, imperfections in the construction, damage and corrosion due to climate change, etc. This article aims to reanalyse the mechanical properties of scaffold joints and anchors and obtain some critical factors in the overall stability of the mentioned structures, including load-bearing capacity, initial stiffness, energy absorption, and ductility. To this aim, some recent research on scaffolds has been summarised and discussed, and then the failure mode and mechanical behaviour of the scaffolds in different types of scaffold joints and anchors have been estimated and considered from previous studies. Moreover, some mechanical properties, including ductility, initial stiffness, and energy absorption, have been estimated and developed based on the force-displacement curves of previous studies. The results highlight the crucial importance of the mechanical properties and behaviour of anchors and joints in estimating the behaviour and stability of scaffolds. The results also revealed that determining the mechanical characteristics of the mentioned elements can have a significant influence on the optimisation and design of scaffolds more accurately and predictably. Moreover, determining the mechanical properties of the anchors and joints can enhance our insights and understanding of how the mentioned parameters can improve the behaviour, stability, and safety of the scaffold structures. Persistence and Resilience in Smart/Hybrid Working Practice: A Gender Evaluation in Public Sector

This research aims to evaluate and highlight the potential mesostructured architecture of established behaviours and operational practices based on the working model change imposed by the pandemic emergency in the public sector. After the intervention of an exogenous shock, the readiness, perceived usefulness and ease-of-use of technologies made the Technology Acceptance Model [TAM] verifiable. Concurrently, it is also possible to verify the Theory of Planned Behaviour [TPB] in the motivation and intention to change employees’ working habits under the lens of complexity and urgency, involving a From Knowledge To Knowledge Strategy [FKTKS]. The research protocol encompasses semi-structured interviews with public managers in Italy, alongside a perceptual and sentiment trend analysis of 70 public employees [35 females and 35 males] regarding their sentiments on digital transition and smart/hybrid working habits before, during, and after the pandemic. In the public sector, change is perceived as a shock-generative tension. In this way, the research aims to answer the genderised issue related to the perception and the persistence of using digital tools in the workplace during the post-urgency period as a regular habit based on perceived usefulness and ease-of-use. The study highlights a gender-specific trend in the use of the smart/hybrid working model after the health emergency. This propensity may also be attributable to the gender traits defined by Hofstede, within whose paradigm the interpretative dynamic provided is embedded. The during-COVID-19 acceptance and usage behaviours define an element related to masculinity because of its urgency and pressing deadlines. In contrast, endurance connects to femininity, emphasising resilience and long-term goals. This approach prioritises resilience and comprehensive well-being, focusing on achieving a good work–life balance [WLB] rather than just addressing immediate issues. Full article
