Radiation impacting astronauts in their spacecraft come from a “bath” of high-energy rays (0.1–0.5 mGy per mission day) that reaches deep tissues like the heart and bones and a “stochastic rain” of low-energy particles from the shielding and impacting surface tissues like skin and lenses. However, these two components cannot be reproduced on Earth together. The MarsSimulator facility (Toulouse University, France) emits, thanks to a bag containing thorium salts, a continuous exposure of 120 mSv/y, corresponding to that prevailing in the International Space Station (ISS). By using immunofluorescence, we assessed DNA double-strand breaks (DSB) induced by 1–5 weeks exposure in ISS of human tissues evoked above, identified at risk for space exploration. All the tissues tested elicited DSBs that accumulated proportionally to the dose at a tissue-dependent rate (about 40 DSB/Gy for skin, 3 times more for lens). For the lens, bones, and radiosensitive skin cells tested, perinuclear localization of phosphorylated forms of ataxia telangiectasia mutated protein (pATM) was observed during the 1st to 3rd week of exposure. Since pATM crowns were shown to reflect accelerated aging, these findings suggest that a low dose rate of 120 mSv/y may accelerate the senescence process of the tested tissues. A mathematical model of pATM crown formation and disappearance has been proposed. Further investigations are needed to document these results in order to better evaluate the risks related to space exploration. Full article

The article is devoted to Bayes optimization problems of nonlinear observable stochastic systems (NLOStSs) based on wavelet canonical expansions (WLCEs). Input stochastic processes (StPs) and output StPs of considered nonlinearly StSs depend on random parameters and additive independent Gaussian noises. For stochastic synthesis we use a Bayes approach with the given loss function and minimum risk condition. WLCEs are formed by covariance function expansion coefficients of two-dimensional orthonormal basis of wavelet with a compact carrier. New results: (i) a common Bayes’ criteria synthesis algorithm for NLOStSs by WLCE is presented; (ii) partial synthesis algorithms for three of Bayes’ criteria (minimum mean square error, damage accumulation and probability of error exit outside the limits) are given; (iii) an approximate algorithm based on statistical linearization; (iv) three test examples. Applications: wavelet optimization and parameter calibration in complex measurement and control systems. Some generalizations are formulated. Full article

This article is devoted to analysis and optimization problems of stochastic systems based on wavelet canonical expansions. Basic new results: (i) for general Bayes criteria, a method of synthesized methodological support and a software tool for nonstationary normal (Gaussian) linear observable stochastic systems by Haar wavelet canonical expansions are presented; (ii) a method of synthesis of a linear optimal observable system for criterion of the maximal probability that a signal will not exceed a particular value in absolute magnitude is given. Applications: wavelet model building of essentially nonstationary stochastic processes and parameters calibration. Full article

In this paper, we propose a new reduced-dynamic (RD) method by introducing the second-order time-difference position (STP) as additional pseudo-observations (named the RD_STP method) for the precise orbit determination (POD) of low Earth orbiters (LEOs) from GPS observations. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that the accuracies of integrating the STPs of LEOs at 30 s intervals are better than 0.01 m when the forces (<10−5 ms−2) acting on the LEOs are ignored. Therefore, only using the Earth’s gravity model is good enough for the proposed RD_STP method. All unmodeled dynamic models (e.g., luni-solar gravitation, tide forces) are treated as the error sources of the STP pseudo-observation. In addition, there are no pseudo-stochastic orbit parameters to be estimated in the RD_STP method. Finally, we use the RD_STP method to process 15 days of GPS data from the GOCE mission. The results show that the accuracy of the RD_STP solution is more accurate and smoother than the kinematic solution in nearly polar and equatorial regions, and consistent with the RD solution. The 3D RMS of the differences between the RD_STP and RD solutions is 1.93 cm for 1 s sampling. This indicates that the proposed method has a performance comparable to the RD method, and could be an alternative for the POD of LEOs. Full article
