Capturing the interactions between moving objects is vital in traffic analysis, sports, and animal behavior, but remains challenging because of subtle spatiotemporal dynamics. This paper introduces HAIMO (Hybrid Analysis of the Interaction of Moving Objects), a conceptual framework that combines knowledge-driven AI for interpretable, symbolic interaction representations with data-driven models trained through self-supervised learning (SSL) on large sets of unlabeled trajectory data. In HAIMO, we propose using transformer architectures to model complex spatiotemporal dependencies while maintaining interpretability through symbolic reasoning. To illustrate the feasibility of this hybrid approach, we present a basic proof-of-concept using elite tennis rallies, where the knowledge-driven component identifies interaction patterns between players and the ball, and we outline how SSL-enhanced transformer models could support and strengthen movement prediction. By bridging symbolic reasoning and self-supervised data-driven learning, HAIMO provides a conceptual foundation for future GeoAI and spatiotemporal analytics, especially in applications where both pattern discovery and explainability are crucial. Background: People with Parkinson’s disease (PwPD) often experience sleep disturbances and reduced physical activity. Altered sleep behavior and lower daily steps have been linked to disease severity and symptom burden. Although physical activity may influence sleep, few studies have examined the relationship between sleep parameters and daily steps in PD. This scoping review aimed to review current knowledge on sleep parameters and daily steps collected concurrently in PwPD and their potential association. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in five databases, PubMed, Web of Science, Sport Discus, Cochrane Library, and Scopus. Methodological quality was assessed using a customized quality checklist developed by Zanardi and collaborators for observational studies, based on Downs and Black’s work. Results: Out of 1421 records, five studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. Four studies reported wearable-based measurements of both step count and sleep parameters, while one study reported wearable-based measurements of step count and self-reported sleep measures. Two studies examined the association between sleep parameters and step count. One study did not find any correlation between sleep and step count, whereas one study reported a positive correlation between daytime sleepiness and step count. Conclusions: This review highlighted the lack of research investigating the relationship between sleep parameters and step count as an indicator of physical activity in PwPD. Findings are inconsistent with a potential positive correlation emerging between daytime sleepiness and step count. Findings also pointed toward lower step count and reduced sleep duration in PwPD, as measured with wearable devices. Full article

Background/Objectives: Accurately predicting the arrival position of a moving target is essential in sports and daily life. While predictive saccades are known to enhance performance, the neural mechanisms underlying the timing of these strategies remain unclear. This study investigated how the timing of saccadic strategies—executed early versus late—affects cortical activity patterns, as measured by electroencephalography (EEG). Methods: Sixteen participants performed a task requiring them to predict the arrival position and timing of a parabolically moving target that became occluded midway through its trajectory. Based on eye movement behavior, participants were classified into an Early Saccade Strategy Group (SSG) or a Late SSG. EEG signals were analyzed in the low beta band (13–15 Hz) using the Hilbert transform. Group differences in eye movements and EEG activity were statistically assessed. Results: No significant group differences were observed in final position or response timing errors. However, time-series analysis showed that the Early SSG achieved earlier and more accurate eye positioning. EEG results revealed greater low beta activity in the Early SSG at electrode sites FC6 and P8, corresponding to the frontal eye field (FEF) and middle temporal (MT) visual area, respectively. Conclusions: Early execution of predictive saccades was associated with enhanced cortical activity in visuomotor and motion-sensitive regions. These findings suggest that early engagement of saccadic strategies supports more efficient visuospatial processing, with potential applications in dynamic physical tasks and digitally mediated performance domains such as eSports. Background and Objectives: Excessive social media use is repeatedly linked to negative body image outcomes, yet its association with muscle dysmorphia, especially in athletic youth, remains underexplored. We investigated how social media exposure, comparison behavior, and platform engagement relate to muscle dysmorphia symptomatology in young German athletes. Materials and Methods: An anonymous, web-based cross-sectional survey was conducted (July–October 2024) of 540 individuals (45% female; mean age = 24.6 ± 5.3 years; 79% ≥ 3 h sport/week) recruited via Instagram. The questionnaire comprised demographics, sport type, detailed social media usage metrics, and the validated German Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI-1, 15 items). Correlations (Spearman’s ρ, Kendall’s τ) were calculated; multivariate importance was probed with classification-and-regression trees and CatBoost gradient boosting, interpreted via SHAP values. Results: Median daily social media time was 76 min (IQR 55–110). Participants who spent ≥ 60 min per day on social media showed higher MDDI scores (mean 38 ± 7 vs. 35 ± 6; p = 0.010). The strongest bivariate link emerged between perceived social media-induced body dissatisfaction and felt pressure to attain a specific body composition (Spearman ρ = 0.748, Kendall τ = 0.672, p < 0.001). A CatBoost gradient-boosting model out-performed linear regression in predicting elevated MDDI. The three most influential features (via SHAP values) were daily social media time, frequency of comparison with fitness influencers, and frequency of “likes”-seeking behavior. Conclusions: Intensive social media exposure substantially heightens muscle dysmorphia risk in young German athletes. Machine-learning interpretation corroborates time on social media and influencer comparisons as primary drivers. Interventions should combine social media literacy training with sport-specific psychoeducation to mitigate maladaptive comparison cycles and prevent downstream eating disorder pathology. Longitudinal research is warranted to clarify causal pathways and to test targeted digital media interventions. Full article

The Role of Perfectionism and Sport Commitment on Exercise Addiction Among Hungarian Athletes

Exercise addiction (EA) is a maladaptive behavior characterized by excessive physical activity, often linked to negative psychological outcomes. This study investigated the relationships between perfectionism, sport commitment, and EA in a sample of 219 Hungarian athletes (M = 22.19 years). Using path analysis, we tested a model hypothesizing that adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism differentially predict enthusiastic and constrained commitment, which in turn influences EA. Our results showed that maladaptive perfectionism positively predicted constrained commitment (β = 0.70) and EA (β = 0.63), while negatively relating to enthusiastic commitment (β = −0.17). Conversely, adaptive perfectionism was positively associated with enthusiastic commitment (β = 0.24) and negatively with constrained commitment (β = −0.12). Moreover, enthusiastic commitment positively predicted EA (β = 0.24). We found a significant indirect effect between adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism when controlling for enthusiastic commitment, suggesting its dual role in this context. Our study suggests that enthusiastic commitment serves as a source of exercise addiction (EA) and has a dual role, acting as both a protective factor and a risk factor for it. Additionally, we found that maladaptive perfectionism is associated with higher levels of constrained commitment and EA, while correlating with lower levels of enthusiastic commitment. Conversely, adaptive perfectionism increases enthusiastic commitment and decreases constrained commitment. These findings highlight the associations between motivational and personality factors in EA, indicating that even adaptive traits can contribute to unhealthy exercise patterns in athletic environments. Background: The widespread use of smartphones and the internet has transformed communication, but excessive use has raised concerns about smartphone and internet addiction, which can lead to psychological, physical, and social issues. The objective of this literature review is to explore the relationship between smartphone and internet addiction and physical activity, particularly focusing on whether physical exercise, especially sports, can serve as a protective factor against addiction. The review aims to examine how physical activity can reduce the negative impacts of addiction and improve overall mental health. Methods: This review synthesizes empirical research on smartphone and internet addiction and its connection to physical activity. It examines studies exploring how addiction leads to physical inactivity and how participation in physical activities, especially sports, can counteract this effect. The review also evaluates research on psychological mechanisms, such as self-esteem, self-control, and emotional resilience, that mediate the relationship between physical activity and addiction. Additionally, it discusses how sociodemographic and contextual factors influence this relationship. Conclusions: The findings consistently show an inverse relationship between smartphone and internet use and physical activity, with physical activity acting as a protective factor against addiction. Sports and other physical activities have been linked to reduced addictive behaviors, enhanced psychological well-being, and improved emotional resilience. Promoting physical activity, particularly sports, along with psychological interventions, appears to be an effective strategy for preventing and treating smartphone and internet addiction. Future research should focus on developing tailored interventions and studying diverse populations to optimize addiction prevention. Full article

Sport can serve as a powerful tool for community building, fostering inclusion, challenging intolerance, and advancing social justice. It also supports positive youth development and active citizenship. When embedded in local life and accessible beyond athletics, sport creates unique conditions for community development and inclusive action. Sport and equity-focused community development are about relationships. The perspectives and behaviors stemming from youth participation in sport—what they learn about human relationships, relationship building, and life skills—carry forward through time in all phases and facets of their lives. The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), Ireland’s largest amateur sporting and cultural organization, exemplifies this potential. More than a sports organization, the GAA plays a central role in Irish society, offering opportunities for people of all ages to engage in sport, fitness, and well-being, while actively contributing to community life. GAA clubs often function as local social hubs, creating spaces for connection across generations. This article uses the GAA as a case study to explore how sport can be a unifying and inclusive structure for community building. Specifically, we will (1) examine the link between sport, youth, and active citizenship; (2) explore connections between sport, community, inclusion, and social justice; (3) offer a historical and cultural overview of the GAA; and (4) consider how organizations like the GAA can support efforts around inclusion, tolerance, and sustainability. The discussion will highlight implications for future community programming and policy. Full article

This study examines perceptions of sexual harassment in sports 25 years after the enactment of Israel’s prevention of sexual harassment law, building upon a 1999 study by Feigin and Negbi. Utilizing feminist and power relations theories, this research investigates how perceptions have evolved across genders, competitive levels, and coaching statuses. A total of 361 participants, including non-competitive, competitive, and Olympic athletes, completed a questionnaire assessing perceptions of potentially harassing behaviors. The results reveal significant shifts in awareness, particularly among female athletes, across all four factors of sexual harassment examined. The most substantial change was observed in the “Between concern and interest” factor, indicating increased sensitivity to ambiguous behaviors. Olympic athletes and coaches demonstrated heightened awareness compared to non-competitive athletes. Gender disparities persisted, with female participants consistently showing higher sensitivity to potentially harassing behaviors. These findings underscore the need for tailored educational programs, policy revisions, and increased representation of diverse perspectives in sports leadership. Full article

Objective: Eating habits established during adolescence play a crucial role in shaping both current and future health status. However, adolescents today appear to be increasingly adopting poorer dietary and lifestyle habits. This study aims to investigate eating behaviors and supplement use among adolescent students who participated in the EduALI nutrition education project. Methods: The project included first-year students from six sports-oriented scientific high schools in Florence. The students participated in six nutrition sessions, completing the International Physical Activity Questionnaire to assess physical activity performance, a questionnaire on dietary supplement use, and, to assess eating habits a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), as well as the Medi-Lite questionnaire to specifically assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD). The data from the FFQ were compared with national dietary guidelines. Results: The study sample consisted of 83 students (69.9% male; average age: 13.8 ± 0.4 y). The results showed that 61.4% of participants had used supplements in the past year, most commonly mineral salts (56.6%) and vitamins (54.2%), followed by botanical products (22%), sports drinks (16%), proteins/amino acids (8%), and creatine (2%). Alarmingly, 27.7% used supplements without medical supervision. Students involved in individual sports had higher supplement consumption than those in team sports, especially creatine use. Eating habits revealed poor adherence to both the MD and Italian dietary guidelines, with deficiencies in fruits, vegetables, olive oil, fish, and legumes, and excessive intake of cheese, meat, especially red and processed meats. Conclusions: A high prevalence of supplement use among adolescents was observed, along with poor adherence to dietary guidelines and MD. These findings underscore the need for targeted, school- and sport-based interventions to enhance adolescents’ nutritional awareness and responsible supplement use. Full article

Some stochastic phenomena that appear in real-world processes and satisfy some similar characteristics can be effectively modeled using functions based on variants of the chi distribution. In this paper, we extend the use of the uncentered chi distribution to the assessment of sports performance, focusing on its ability to characterize the physical fitness of athletes. The generating functions, constructed from individual test data assumed to follow a Gaussian distribution, provide a basis for creating a fitness index. In addition, we propose a methodology to rank athletes based on their performance in specific physical tests. Drawing on parallels with thermodynamic systems, such as the behavior of particles in an ideal gas, we explore the suitability of the (non-centered) chi distribution for modeling sports data. Simulations and real examples are presented that demonstrate the robustness of this approach. Full article

Environmental consciousness has become increasingly important in the professional sports industry as it often hosts large-scale events that have significant environmental impacts. While the economic benefits of locating stadiums in city centers have been discussed, especially in terms of neighborhood revitalization, there has been limited empirical research on whether stadium relocation affects the transportation choices of spectators and reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Through a case study of a Japanese professional football club that relocated its home stadium from the suburb to the city center, this study quantitatively elucidated the change in spectators’ transportation choices and resulting reductions in carbon emissions achieved by the stadium relocation. Analysis indicated variations in behavioral changes among groups based on their loyalty levels to the club. It also highlighted the varying influence of the different residential areas within the metropolitan area on the modal choice. This study demonstrates the potential contribution of stadium relocation to sustainable urban planning by providing empirical evidence of these behavioral changes and policy implications for restructuring the urban public transportation network. This article presents a series of innovative systems developed through student laboratory projects, comprising two autonomous vehicles, a quadrupedal walking robot, an active ankle-foot orthosis, a ball-on-beam balancing mechanism, a ball-on-plate system, and a manipulator arm, all actuated by pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs). Due to their flexibility, low weight, and compliance, fluidic muscles demonstrate substantial potential for integration into various mechatronic systems, robotic platforms, and manipulators. Their capacity to generate smooth and adaptive motion is particularly advantageous in applications requiring natural and human-like movements, such as rehabilitation technologies and assistive devices. Despite the inherent challenges associated with nonlinear behavior in PAM-actuated control systems, their biologically inspired design remains promising for a wide range of future applications. Potential domains include industrial automation, the automotive and aerospace sectors, as well as sports equipment, medical assistive devices, entertainment systems, and animatronics. The integration of self-constructed laboratory systems powered by PAMs into control systems education provides a comprehensive pedagogical framework that merges theoretical instruction with practical implementation. This methodology enhances the skillset of future engineers by deepening their understanding of core technical principles and equipping them to address emerging challenges in engineering practice. Body image is understood as a social construction acquired over the years that is generated as people learn behaviors and relate to each other in the search of their own identity. The aim of this research is to identify the personal and contextual factors which may influence the positive social, negative social, and self-concept dimensions of the social construction of body image on boys and girls from fifth and sixth grades of Primary Education by developing a descriptive exploratory study. For the sample, 719 pupils of fifth grade and sixth grade from Primary Education were selected to develop this research; 373 of them were boys (51.9%) and 340 girls (47.3%), with 6 lost samples. The main results of this research suggested associations between the lack of physical activity, the increase in BMI, and the increase in the number of siblings who worried more about body perception. Interventions based on improving athletes’ adaptive capacity to game environment conditions have been widely developed in sports science. The objective of this study was to systematically review the scientific literature on interventions and applications, from an ecological perspective, for the tactical performance of volleyball players. A systematic search was conducted in five electronic scientific databases in accordance with PRISMA guidelines: Web of Science (WOS), PubMed (Medline), Scopus, SportDiscus and Google Scholar. A total of eight studies met the inclusion criteria, all published after 2014. The risk of bias and main characteristics of the articles in different contexts were assessed. Particular attention was paid to recording data related to the characteristics of manipulation or the timing of the intervention. The results showed that these approaches influenced tactical variables in volleyball game situations. In this sense, short-session interventions with small-sided games and modifications of structural elements aid athletes’ self-regulation in different environments. Furthermore, results show that this approach allows for improvements in individual and collective tactical behavior. Based on the data analyzed, we recommend the use of ecological tasks, based on representative and modified practices that promote player adaptation, as a methodological tool in the volleyball training process. Evaluating the Impact of Environmental Exposure on the Performance of Polyester Sportswear Materials

The growing popularity of sporting activities has led to an increased demand for sportswear. Consequently, sportswear developers are, therefore, faced with the challenge of meeting the increasing and more demanding expectations of users. In this study, the effects of aging on sportswear materials made from recycled and conventional polyesters are investigated. The properties analyzed include mass per unit area, thickness, porosity, elongation, bending stiffness, abrasion, and wetting and drying behavior. The results showed that aging leads to an increase in fabric thickness, with recycled polyester showing the largest increase of 6.6%, as well as a reduction in porosity. In addition, recycled polyester exhibited the highest stiffness, while conventional polyester, with the lowest mass per unit area, had the lowest stiffness and offered greater flexibility in movement. Non-aged samples had a shorter wetting time, while the aged materials dried faster. As the material ages, its abrasion resistance decreases. However, the recycled polyester material showed better wear resistance after aging compared to standard materials, indicating its potential long-term durability. In summary, the results suggest that aging significantly affects the structure and functional properties of fabrics, which is important for designing durable sportswear that maintains optimal performance over time and use.
