In view of the sudden grid voltage distortions, such as voltage sags and unbalances, that may occur in photovoltaic (PV) grid-connected systems under local shading conditions, this paper proposes a control strategy integrating a linear active disturbance rejection controller (LADRC)-based virtual synchronous generator (VSG) and an active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC)-based dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). To enhance the stability and response speed of the PV inverter system, a novel LADRC-based voltage–current dual closed-loop control strategy with pre-synchronization is designed, ensuring stable operation of the inverter and load. To address the overshooting issues found in traditional PI control under local shading, the ADRC-based DVR compensates for PV system voltage fluctuations, achieving rapid voltage distortion compensation and ensuring grid-connected system safety. Simulink experiments verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in improving transient voltage quality in PV systems affected by local shading. The total harmonic distortion rates of voltage and current are both less than 0.5%, which significantly improves the performance compared to existing research. Full article

This paper presents an advanced dynamic voltage restorer with integrated energy optimal compensation (EOC-DVR), which combines the advantages of pre-sag compensation and energy minimization compensation. The performance parameters of the EOC-DVR, such as the compensatory capability, loss of energy, and duration of compensation, can be balanced by this optimal compensation strategy. Additionally, the impact on the load is further reduced by the proposed method. By analyzing the working process of optimal comprehensive energy, the compensation limit of the strategy is discussed. After that, both the voltage and active power of the system for compensating are obtained by analyzing the compensation characteristics of the strategy. Therefore, the relations of the formula and curve between the related physical quantities can be obtained. Finally, simulation results based on MATLAB/Simulink are provided to verify the effectiveness of proposed compensation method. Full article

This paper considers the reference signal generation problem for the multi-functional operation of single-phase dynamic voltage restorers. For this purpose, a single-phase quasi type-1 phase-locked loop (QT1-PLL) is proposed. The pre-loop filter part of this PLL is composed of a frequency-fixed delayed signal cancellation method and a two-stage all-pass filter. Thanks to the frequency-fixed nature, the pre-loop filter is easy to implement and can provide rejection of any measurement offset. Moreover, this PLL benefits from the excellent harmonic robustness property of the conventional QT1-PLL. Small-signal modeling and gain tuning procedures are detailed in this paper. In order to track the reference voltage signals generated by the proposed PLL, a super-twisting sliding mode controller is also presented, which helps to achieve fast dynamic responses. Laboratory-scale prototype-based experimental studies were conducted to validate the developed reference generator and the controller. Experimental results show that the proposed method is fast in detecting and compensating any grid voltage anomalies to maintain constant load voltage despite voltage sag, swell, and harmonic distortions. The advancement of power electronic-based sensitive loads drives the power utilities’ devotion to power quality issues. The voltage disturbance could be happening due to fault conditions, switching of loads, energizing of transformers, or integration of highly intermittent energy sources such as PV systems. This research work attempts to enhance the voltage fluctuation of a sensitive load connected to a grid-integrated PV system using a battery-based dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). The proposed battery energy storage-based DVR has two separate controlling stages that are implemented at the DC–DC buck/boost converter of the battery and voltage source converter (VSC) system. Charging and discharging of the battery is operated based on the state-of-charge (SOC) value of the battery and the measured root mean square (RMS) voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC). The VSC of the DVR detection and reference generation control is done appropriately. In the detection control of the VSC, a combination of RMS and dq0 measurement techniques is used, whereas in the reference generation control, pre-fault strategy is implemented to restore both phase jump and magnitude distortions. Symmetrical and asymmetrical voltage sags scenarios are considered and the compensation demonstration is carried out using power system computer-aided design (PSCAD/EMTDC) software. Full article
