Background/Objectives: Older adults (65+) are the fastest growing age group in Canada, comprising 18.8% of the country’s population. During the COVID-19 pandemic, use of virtual care, including telehealth and tele-medicine, increased dramatically among older adults in Canada who often face higher health risks, mobility limitations, and many barriers to accessing healthcare. Despite the rapid expansion in virtual care, no systematic review has focused specifically on virtual care among older adults in Canada. This review aims to explore the factors influencing virtual care adoption and the experiences of older Canadians during the pandemic through a systematic review. Methods: Conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, the review involved a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, ESCBOHost, and Web of Science on 2 May 2025, yielding 281 unique citations. After screening and applying eligibility criteria, 15 studies employing quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods designs, with sample sizes ranging from 15 to 2,282,798, were included and appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Results: The review identified three domains of factors and the ways in which each factor shapes older adults’ virtual care experiences: (1) personal factors influencing virtual care use and demand (e.g., age, education, language, income, immigration status, community sizes), (2) resource factors impacting virtual care adoption (e.g., technology access, support), and (3) varying virtual care experiences among older adults (e.g., in assessment and communication efficacy, privacy, care quality, convenience, safety, and costs). Conclusions: This review highlights the complexities of virtual care engagement among older adults and underscores the need for inclusive, tailored strategies to improve the accessibility and effectiveness of virtual care delivery in both pandemic and post-pandemic contexts. The COVID-19 pandemic catalyzed the rapid adoption of remote patient monitoring (RPM) technologies such as telemedicine and wearable devices (WDs), significantly transforming healthcare delivery. Telemedicine made virtual consultations possible, reducing in-person visits and infection risks, particularly for the management of chronic diseases. Wearable devices enabled the real-time continuous monitoring of health that assisted in condition prediction and management, such as for COVID-19. This narrative review addresses these transformations by uniquely synthesizing findings from 13 diverse studies (sourced from PubMed and Google Scholar, 2020–2024) to analyze the parallel evolution of telemedicine and WDs as interconnected RPM components. It highlights the pandemic’s dual impact, as follows: accelerating RPM innovation and adoption while simultaneously unmasking systemic challenges such as inequities in access and a need for robust integration approaches; while telemedicine usage soared during the pandemic, consumption post-pandemic, as indicated by the reviewed studies, suggests continued barriers to adoption among older adults. Likewise, wearable devices demonstrated significant potential in early disease detection and long-term health management, with promising applications extending beyond COVID-19, including long COVID conditions. Addressing the identified challenges is crucial for healthcare providers and systems to fully embrace these technologies and this would improve efficiency and patient outcomes. Full article

Background: The long-term impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on pulmonary function remains insufficiently characterised, particularly among individuals who have experienced mild or asymptomatic disease. This study aimed to assess spirometric changes over a three-year period and evaluate potential associations with demographic and clinical variables. Methods: We retrospectively analysed spirometry data from 103 healthcare workers (HCWs) who underwent pulmonary function tests at three time points: before the pandemic (Time 0), one year post-pandemic (Time 1), and two years post-pandemic (Time 2). Linear regression models were employed to evaluate the impact of various factors, including age, BMI, gender, smoking status, history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, vaccination status prior to infection, and the number of infections, on changes in FVC and FEV1. Results: A statistically significant decrease in both FVC and FEV1 were observed at Time 1 and Time 2 compared to baseline (p < 0.05). Smoking habits were significantly associated with a greater decline in both FVC and FEV1. Multiple infections were associated with larger reductions in FVC at Time 1. No significant associations were found with age, gender, BMI, or vaccination status. Even in the absence of severe symptoms of the disease, healthcare workers exhibited a measurable decline in pulmonary function over time. Smoking and reinfection emerged as relevant factors associated with reduced lung capacity. Conclusions: These findings emphasise the need for ongoing respiratory monitoring in occupational settings and the importance of targeted preventive measures. Full article

Background/Objectives: Mobile healthcare units (MHUs) comprise flexible, ambulatory healthcare teams that deliver community care services, particularly in underserved or remote areas. In Greece, MHUs were pivotal in epidemiological surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic and are now evolving into a sustainable and integrated service for much-needed community-based healthcare. To support this expanded role, targeted, competency-based training is essential; however, this can pose challenges, especially in coordinating synchronous learning across geographically dispersed teams and in ensuring engagement using an online format. Methods: A nationwide, online training program was developed to improve the knowledge of the personnel members of the Hellenic National Public Health Organization’s MHUs. This program was structured focusing on four core themes: (i) prevention–health promotion; (ii) provision of care; (iii) social welfare and solidarity initiatives; and (iv) digital health skill enhancement. The program was implemented by the University of Crete’s Center for Training and Lifelong Learning from 16 January to 24 February 2025. A multidisciplinary team of 64 experts delivered 250 h of live and on-demand educational content, including health screenings, vaccination protocols, biomarker monitoring, chronic disease management, treatment adherence, organ donation awareness, counseling on social violence, and eHealth applications. Knowledge acquisition was assessed through a pre- and post-training multiple-choice test related to the core themes. Trainees’ and trainers’ qualitative feedback was evaluated using a 0–10 numerical rating scale (Likert-type). Results: A total of 873 MHU members participated in the study, including both healthcare professionals and administrative staff. The attendance rate was consistently above 90% on a daily basis. The average assessment score increased from 52.8% (pre-training) to 69.8% (post-training), indicating 17% knowledge acquisition. The paired t-test analysis demonstrated that this improvement was statistically significant (t = −8.52, p < 0.001), confirming the program’s effectiveness in enhancing knowledge. As part of the evaluation of qualitative feedback, the program was positively evaluated, with 75–80% of trainees rating key components such as content, structure, and trainer effectiveness as “Very Good” or “Excellent.” In addition, using a 0–10 scale, trainers rated the program relative to organization (9.4/10), content (8.8), and trainee engagement (8.9), confirming the program’s strength and scalability in primary care education. Conclusions: This initiative highlights the effectiveness of a structured, online training program in enhancing MHU knowledge, ensuring standardized, high-quality education that supports current primary healthcare needs. Future studies evaluating whether the increase in knowledge acquisition may also result in an improvement in the personnel’s competencies, and clinical practice will further contribute to assessing whether additional training programs may be helpful. Background/Objectives: Lung cancer remains a major cause of cancer-related mortality, with regional differences in incidence and patient characteristics. This study aimed to verify and quantify a perceived dramatic increase in lung cancer cases at a Romanian center, identify distinct patient phenotypes using unsupervised machine learning, and characterize contributing factors, including demographic shifts, changes in the healthcare system, and geographic patterns. Methods: A comprehensive retrospective analysis of 4206 lung cancer patients admitted between 2013 and 2024 was conducted, with detailed molecular characterization of 398 patients from 2023 to 2024. Temporal trends were analyzed using statistical methods, while k-means clustering on 761 clinical features identified patient phenotypes. The geographic distribution, smoking patterns, respiratory comorbidities, and demographic factors were systematically characterized across the identified clusters. Results: We confirmed an 80.5% increase in lung cancer admissions between pre-pandemic (2013–2020) and post-pandemic (2022–2024) periods, exceeding the 51.1% increase in total hospital admissions and aligning with national Romanian trends. Five distinct patient clusters emerged: elderly never-smokers (28.9%) with the highest metastatic rates (44.3%), heavy-smoking males (27.4%), active smokers with comprehensive molecular testing (31.7%), young mixed-gender cohort (7.3%) with balanced demographics, and extreme heavy smokers (4.8%) concentrated in rural areas (52.6%) with severe comorbidity burden. Clusters demonstrated significant differences in age (p < 0.001), smoking intensity (p < 0.001), geographic distribution (p < 0.001), as well as molecular characteristics. COPD prevalence was exceptionally high (44.8–78.9%) across clusters, while COVID-19 history remained low (3.4–8.3%), suggesting a limited direct association between the pandemic and cancer. Conclusions: This study presents the first comprehensive machine learning-based stratification of lung cancer patients in Romania, confirming genuine epidemiological increases beyond healthcare system artifacts. The identification of five clinically meaningful phenotypes—particularly rural extreme smokers and age-stratified never-smokers—demonstrates the value of unsupervised clustering for regional healthcare planning. These findings establish frameworks for targeted screening programs, personalized treatment approaches, and resource allocation strategies tailored to specific high-risk populations while highlighting the potential of artificial intelligence in identifying actionable clinical patterns for the implementation of precision medicine. Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in healthcare systems, especially in ensuring continuity of care for patients with chronic diseases. Rehabilitation services, essential for recovery following SARS-CoV-2 infection, were among the most disrupted. This exploratory study aimed to assess Romanian patients’ perceptions of the accessibility and quality of post-COVID-19 rehabilitation services, focusing on individuals with chronic conditions. Methods: This exploratory cross-sectional study was conducted over a 12-month period in 2024. Data were collected from 76 adult patients diagnosed with at least one chronic condition (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, cancer, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and with confirmed prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. Most participants were recruited during outpatient specialty consultations, with a smaller number included from hospital settings, all located in Bucharest. A structured questionnaire was administered by the principal investigator after obtaining informed consent. Quantitative data were analyzed using non-parametric methods following confirmation of non-normal distribution via the Shapiro–Wilk test (p < 0.05). Satisfaction scores were reported as medians with interquartile ranges (IQR), and group comparisons were performed using the Mann–Whitney U test. A mixed-methods approach was employed, including thematic analysis of open-ended responses. Results: Patient satisfaction with rehabilitation services was consistently low. The median satisfaction scores [IQR] were accessibility 1.0 [0.0–2.0], quality of services 0.0 [0.0–4.0], staff empathy 0.0 [0.0–5.0], and perceived effectiveness 0.0 [0.0–5.0]. The median score for perceived difficulties in access was 1.0 [1.0–2.0], indicating widespread barriers. No statistically significant differences were observed between urban and rural participants or across chronic disease categories. Thematic analysis (n = 65) revealed key concerns including lack of publicly funded services, cost barriers, limited physician referral, service scarcity in rural areas, and demand for home-based rehabilitation options. Conclusions: Romanian patients with chronic illnesses and previous SARS-CoV-2 infection continue to face substantial barriers in accessing post-COVID-19 rehabilitation services. These findings highlight the need for more equitable and integrated recovery programs, especially for vulnerable populations in underserved settings. Full article

This study investigates the relationship between architectural attributes of workspaces and employee satisfaction, situating its inquiry within the broader context of post-pandemic hybrid work models and the evolving understanding of territoriality in organizational environments. Drawing on the social production of space and the multidimensional framework of Quality of Work Life (QWL), this research employs a quantitative, questionnaire-based methodology across three diverse corporate settings in Belgrade, Serbia. A total of 124 participants took part in the survey, representing the logistics (Fercam), IT (UBConnect), and healthcare (Medigroup) sectors. The survey integrates validated instruments—the Workspace Characteristics Scale (WCS) and the Workspace Satisfaction Scale (WSS)—to assess the impact of 12 variables and spatial features, reflecting functional, sensory, and sociological dimensions. Multiple regression analyses reveal that aesthetics, flexibility, and a sense of belonging consistently emerge as significant predictors of workspace satisfaction, with sector-specific variations observed across the cases. Notably, the findings underscore the importance of aligning spatial design with organizational values and user expectations while also highlighting the nuanced roles of sociological and psychological dimensions. The results offer practical relevance for architects and interior designers, providing insights into how design strategies tailored to user needs and sector-specific cultures can foster more effective workplace environments. This study concludes that evidence-based, multidimensional design strategies are essential for fostering well-being and productivity in contemporary work environments, demonstrating the value of aligning design with user expectations to enhance organizational outcomes. It recommends further research into the interplay between flexibility and belonging as determinants of workplace satisfaction. Full article

Background: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by multidrug-resistant non-fermenting Gram-negative bacilli, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii, represent a growing public health concern, especially in tertiary care settings. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological and antimicrobial resistance trends of P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii isolated from blood cultures over an eight-year period (2017–2024) at a tertiary infectious disease hospital in Bucharest, Romania, especially in the context of the disruption caused by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 43,951 blood cultures processed at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases. Species identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) were performed using VITEK2, MALDI-TOF MS, and supplementary phenotypic methods. AST interpretation followed EUCAST guidelines. Results: Out of all of the positive blood cultures, 112 (3.63%) were P. aeruginosa and 158 (5.12%) A. baumannii. Multidrug-resistance (MDR) was identified in 46% of P. aeruginosa and 90.73% of A. baumannii isolates. Resistance trends varied, with P. aeruginosa showing a decrease in MDR rates post-COVID-19 pandemic and following antimicrobial stewardship implementation. In contrast, A. baumannii displayed persistently high resistance, with carbapenem and aminoglycoside resistance rates reaching 100% by 2024. Colistin resistance, though low overall, increased in the latter years. Conclusions: The findings highlight the dynamic nature of antimicrobial resistance among P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii. Effective infection control and antimicrobial stewardship programs are crucial in curbing the rise of MDR strains, particularly amid healthcare system disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper investigates the spillover effects and transmission networks of systemic risk within China’s national economic sectors under extreme conditions from both time and frequency domain perspectives, building upon the spillover index methodology and calculating the ∆CoVaR index for Chinese industries. The findings indicate the following: (1) Extreme-risk spillovers synchronize across industries but exhibit pronounced time-varying peaks during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, the 2015 crash, and the COVID-19 pandemic. (2) Long-term spillovers dominate overall connectedness, highlighting the lasting impact of fundamentals and structural linkages. (3) In terms of risk volatility, Energy, Materials, Consumer Discretionary, and Financials are most sensitive to systemic market shocks. (4) On the risk spillover effect, Consumer Discretionary, Industrials, Healthcare, and Information Technology consistently act as net transmitters of extreme risk, while Energy, Materials, Consumer Staples, Financials, Telecom Services, Utilities, and Real Estate primarily serve as net receivers. Based on these findings, the paper suggests deepening the regulatory mechanisms for systemic risk, strengthening the synergistic effect of systemic risk measurement and early warning indicators, and coordinating risk monitoring, early warning, and risk prevention and mitigation. It further emphasizes the importance of avoiding fragmented regulation by establishing a joint risk prevention mechanism across sectors and departments, strengthening the supervision of inter-industry capital flows. Finally, it highlights the need to closely monitor the formation mechanisms and transmission paths of new financial risks under the influence of the pandemic to prevent the accumulation and eruption of risks in the post-pandemic era. Authorities must conduct annual “Industry Transmission Reviews” to map emerging risk nodes and supply-chain vulnerabilities, refine policy tools, and stabilize market expectations so as to forestall the build-up and sudden release of new systemic shocks. The COVID-19 pandemic has radically transformed behavioral science research. While many disciplines have been shown increasing attention in the existing literature, behavioral science uniquely revisits old questions to develop new theoretical perspectives for the post-COVID-19 era. Our systematic search of the literature allowed us to map 505 records that met our criteria, found across 102 papers; from these, we chose 11 articles published between 2021 and 2024. The focus of this review is on examining old questions while providing fresh insights into social, psychological, cognitive, healthcare, and human behavior. The findings emphasize the relevance of the TPB, the HBM, SCT, and the COM-B model, which effectively provide new theoretical insights into post-COVID-19 research. This study shows that theory-informed practices have been integrated into behavioral science research since the COVID-19 pandemic. Practical applications depend on these insights, which can inform evidence-based practice of planned behavior in healthcare policy, academic research, and community practice. Full article

Adherence to Staphylococcus aureus Bacteremia Management Recommendations Before, During, and After the COVID-19 Pandemic: Prognostic Implications

Background/Objectives: This work aims to assess the evolution in the management of Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on it. SAB is associated with high morbidity and mortality, requiring structured management strategies. The COVID-19 pandemic led to major changes in hospital workflows, potentially affecting the quality of SAB care. Methods: We conducted a retrospective per-protocol analysis of SAB episodes at Costa del Sol University Hospital (Marbella, Spain) across three periods: pre-pandemic, pandemic, and post-pandemic. Patients with early mortality or early transfer were excluded. Clinical variables, adherence to recommended management bundles, and outcomes were compared. Demographic characteristics were similar across the analyzed periods. Results: The incidence of SAB increased over time, with a notable rise post-pandemic. Key management indicators such as the identification of infection source and appropriate antibiotic therapy showed adherence rates of above 90%, while echocardiography exhibited an adherence rate of above 75% throughout the study. Adherence to the full management bundle was suboptimal, with no significant differences between periods. However, an appropriate treatment duration significantly improved in the post-pandemic group (p = 0.038). Mortality at 14 and 30 days was highest during the pandemic period (10.3% and 17.6%, respectively), although differences were not statistically significant. Complications and mortality were more frequent in patients with complete adherence to the bundle (p = 0.031). Conclusions: Despite stable or improved adherence to certain SAB management measures during the pandemic, mortality and complication rates did not significantly decrease, likely reflecting increased patient severity or healthcare system overload. These findings highlight the need for sustained, multidisciplinary, bedside-based approaches to SAB care, even during public health emergencies. Further research is needed to explore modifiable factors and enhance adherence to evidence-based recommendations. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in countless losses around the world, profoundly affecting the lives of many people, especially those who faced the death of family members, bringing several negative repercussions to these families and constraining the experience of grief. This study aimed to understand the experience of loss and grief among bereaved individuals who lost family members during the COVID-19 pandemic. This qualitative study was guided by Charmaz’s constructivist grounded theory as a methodological framework. The study adhered to the Criteria for REporting Qualitative research (COREQ) checklist. Data collection took place between May and November 2023 through telephone interviews that were audio-recorded and later transcribed in full. The purposive sample consisted of 21 bereaved family members who had lost their loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were mainly female (n = 16) with a mean age of 55.5 (SD = 16.2). The loss of their family members occurred 12 to 24 months before data collection. The following central phenomenon was identified through the analytical process: “Family experience of loss and grief: between the unspoken goodbye and post-loss adjustment”. This was anchored in the following three categories: (1) Anguish and fear of the unknown; (2) Death by COVID-19—communication of death and lack of goodbyes; and (3) (Re)construction of meaning—support networks and the grieving process. Our findings recommend that policymakers allocate additional resources to grief support services to better prepare for future pandemic events. Furthermore, it is necessary to invest in the implementation of relevant training programs for healthcare professionals, with a family centered approach. Full article

Post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) is a common outcome of severe COVID-19 infection; however, less is known about PCS following mild COVID-19. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are more susceptible to acquiring COVID-19 and potentially suffering physical and psychological morbidity secondary to their role. We surveyed HCWs at four hospitals in northeast England at two timepoints during the pandemic, assessing physical and psychophysiological symptoms of PCS, alongside associated factors, whilst also testing for COVID-19 status by SARS-CoV-2 serology and reviewing evidence of infection from previous PCR nasopharyngeal swabs. Of the 379 participants at baseline and 250 HCWs recruited 18 months later, 46% and 64% (respectively) had evidence of previous COVID-19, with no significant associations between COVID-19 status or demographics and symptom scores or self-described PCS. Depression and fatigue were more common later in the pandemic. Furthermore, 20% self-described having PCS, 34% of whom had no evidence of previous COVID-19. Scores for fatigue, pain, mobility, anxiety, and depression were significantly worse in the PCS group compared to those without ongoing symptoms. Significant proportions of HCWs continued to suffer debilitating symptoms during the later pandemic period, although a significant minority had no evidence of previous COVID-19 infection, suggesting that other factors may be involved in their symptomatology. Impact of a Single Virtual Reality Relaxation Session on Mental-Health Outcomes in Frontline Workers on Duty During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Preliminary Study

Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic affected frontline workers’ mental health, including healthcare workers, firefighters, and police officers, increasing the need for effective interventions. This study focuses on the pandemic’s psychological impact, perceived stress, depression/anxiety symptoms, and resilience, examining if a brief virtual reality (VR)–based relaxation session could reduce psychological symptoms. Methods: In this preliminary study with data collected in 2025 from frontline workers who had served during the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, 54 frontline workers completed a baseline assessment of the perceived psychological impact of COVID-19 pandemic, general perceived well-being, perceived stress (PSS-4), anxiety/depression (PHQ-4) and resilience (RS-25). Each participant then engaged in a 10-min immersive VR relaxation session featuring a calming 360° nature environment with audio guidance, after which questionnaires were re-administered. Paired samples t-tests and repeated-measures ANOVA evaluated pre-/post-session differences, and a hierarchical multiple linear regression model tested predictors of the change in stress. Results: Pre-session results showed moderate perceived stress and resilience and low depression/anxiety. Occupation groups varied in baseline stress, mostly reporting negative pandemic psychological effects. After VR, significantly perceived well-being increased, and stress decreased, whereas depression/anxiety changes were nonsignificant. Repeated-measures ANOVA revealed a main effect of time on stress (p = 0.003) without occupation-by-time interaction (p = 0.246), indicating all occupational groups benefited similarly from the VR session. Hierarchical regression indicated baseline depression and higher perceived pandemic-related harm independently predicted greater stress reduction, whereas resilience and baseline anxiety showed no statistically significant results. Conclusions: A single VR relaxation session lowered perceived stress among frontline workers, particularly those reporting higher baseline depression or pandemic-related burden. Limitations include the absence of a control group. Results support VR-based interventions as feasible, rapidly deployable tools for high-stress settings. Future research should assess longer-term outcomes, compare VR to alternative interventions, and consider multi-session protocols. Full article
