This study investigates the sensitivity of an urban parameterization scheme of the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). The model sensitivity is tested during the period April–May 2020 over the greater Paris region. The parent domain covers Europe with a 12 km horizontal resolution, with a nested one covering the greater Paris region with a 3 km horizontal resolution. A multi-layer urban scheme called Building Effect Parameterization coupled with the Building Energy Model (BEP-BEM) was applied in two simulations: (1) BEP-BEM Paris, with urban options tailored for the Paris region, which were derived from Earth Observation data, and (2) BEP-BEM Europe, which uses an updated urban parameter table with an estimated average profile for European cities. These two simulations were compared with observations and a WRF simulation using a simple urban parameterization (BULK approach). BULK and multi-layer urban scheme experiments present a similar general error for April, underestimating temperature, while the BEP-BEM runs overestimate temperature for May. The simulation with the advanced tailored urban parameterization over Paris appears to have the best overall performance in this 2-month period. Full article

Background/Objectives: The 2019 Swiss growth references for height, weight, and BMI were based on a large dataset from the German-speaking part of Switzerland (Cohort 2019). The current study aimed to ensure national representativeness by proportionate amounts of additional data from the French-speaking (Suisse Romande) and Italian-speaking (Ticino) regions to validate the 2019 growth curves and to update the national growth references. It also investigated the influence of parental migration background on child growth. Methods: Anthropometric data from 43,290 children and adolescents—including 11,816 new cases—were analyzed (Cohort 2019 + 2025). Percentile curves were modeled using the Generalized Additive Models for Location, Scale, and Shape (GAMLSS) framework. Results: The extended dataset largely confirms the 2019 growth references. Variations in height percentiles were small and clinically negligible. Clinically relevant differences in BMI percentiles were observed in girls, with the most pronounced deviations—up to 0.8 kg/m2—at the 97th percentile. Analyses by parental migration background revealed relevant differences in BMI. Conclusions: The extended Swiss Growth References (Cohort 2019 + 2025) are robust and provide valid reference data for all Swiss children and adolescents, offering contemporary tools for decision-making in clinical practice. To maintain their validity over time, targeted updates are required, with special attention to demographic changes resulting from migration. Full article

Background/Objectives: Food allergy (FA) is a growing concern in pediatric care, requiring effective avoidance strategies and timely emergency responses. The role of caregivers is central to the daily management of FA. This study aimed to assess parental knowledge, preparedness, and behaviors regarding pediatric FA management, focusing on both prevention and emergency readiness. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from December 2024 to April 2025 through the SurveyMonkey® platform, promoted by the Italian Society of Pediatric Allergology and Immunology (SIAIP). The anonymous, structured questionnaire was distributed online and in two Italian university hospitals. A total of 129 fully completed responses from caregivers of children with FA were analyzed. The survey explored self-perceived knowledge, symptom recognition, preventive actions, emergency preparedness, and communication practices. Results: Only 9.3% of parents considered themselves “very informed,” while 54.3% reported limited or no knowledge. Just 16.0% recognized all symptoms of an allergic reaction, and only 24.0% could distinguish mild reactions from anaphylaxis. Notably, 67.4% reported not knowing how to respond to anaphylaxis, and 83.7% did not possess an epinephrine auto-injector. Preventive measures at home were inconsistently applied, and 41.1% took no precautions when eating out. Communication with external caregivers was often informal or absent. Only 33% updated physicians regularly. Conclusions: The findings reveal significant gaps in parental preparedness and highlight critical areas for educational intervention. Enhanced caregiver training, standardized communication protocols, and improved clinical follow-up are essential to strengthen pediatric FA management and safety. Full article

Narrative review synthesizes the most current literature on the SARS-CoV-2 XEC variant, focusing on its genomic evolution, immune evasion characteristics, epidemiological dynamics, and public health implications. To achieve this, we conducted a structured search of the literature of peer-reviewed articles, preprints, and official surveillance data from 2023 to early 2025, prioritizing virological, clinical, and immunological reports related to XEC and its parent lineages. Defined by the distinctive spike protein mutations, T22N and Q493E, XEC exhibits modest reductions in neutralization in vitro, although current evidence suggests that mRNA booster vaccines, including those targeting JN.1 and KP.2, retain cross-protective efficacy against symptomatic and severe disease. The XEC strain of SARS-CoV-2 has drawn particular attention due to its increasing prevalence in multiple regions and its potential to displace other Omicron subvariants, although direct evidence of enhanced replicative fitness is currently lacking. Preliminary analyses also indicated that glycosylation changes at the N-terminal domain enhance infectivity and immunological evasion, which is expected to underpin the increasing prevalence of XEC. The XEC variant, while still emerging, is marked by a unique recombination pattern and a set of spike protein mutations (T22N and Q493E) that collectively demonstrate increased immune evasion potential and epidemiological expansion across Europe and North America. Current evidence does not conclusively associate XEC with greater disease severity, although additional research is required to determine its clinical relevance. Key knowledge gaps include the precise role of recombination events in XEC evolution and the duration of cross-protective T-cell responses. New research priorities include genomic surveillance in undersampled regions, updated vaccine formulations against novel spike epitopes, and long-term longitudinal studies to monitor post-acute sequelae. These efforts can be augmented by computational modeling and the One Health approach, which combines human and veterinary sciences. Recent computational findings (GISAID, 2024) point to the potential of XEC for further mutations in under-surveilled reservoirs, enhancing containment challenges and risks. Addressing the potential risks associated with the XEC variant is expected to benefit from interdisciplinary coordination, particularly in regions where genomic surveillance indicates a measurable increase in prevalence. Quantum neural networks (QNNs) represent an emerging technology that uses a quantum computer for neural network computations. The QNNs have demonstrated potential advantages over classical neural networks in certain tasks. As a core component of a QNN, the parameterized quantum circuit (PQC) plays a crucial role in determining the QNN’s overall performance. However, quantum circuit architectures designed manually based on experience or using specific hardware structures can suffer from inefficiency due to the introduction of redundant quantum gates, which amplifies the impact of noise on system performance. Recent studies have suggested that the advantages of quantum evolutionary algorithms (QEAs) in terms of precision and convergence speed can provide an effective solution to quantum circuit architecture-related problems. Currently, most QEAs adopt a fixed rotation mode in the evolution process, and a lack of an adaptive updating mode can cause the QEAs to fall into a local optimum and make it difficult for them to converge. To address these problems, this study proposes an adaptive quantum evolution algorithm (AQEA). First, an adaptive mechanism is introduced to the evolution process, and the strategy of combining two dynamic rotation angles is adopted. Second, to prevent the fluctuations of the population’s offspring, the elite retention of the parents is used to ensure the inheritance of good genes. Finally, when the population falls into a local optimum, a quantum catastrophe mechanism is employed to break the current population state. The experimental results show that compared with the QNN structure based on manual design and QEA search, the proposed AQEA can reduce the number of network parameters by up to 20% and increase the accuracy by 7.21%. Moreover, in noisy environments, the AQEA-optimized circuit outperforms traditional circuits in maintaining high fidelity, and its excellent noise resistance provides strong support for the reliability of quantum computing. In recent years, the harms and abuse of synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) have attracted extensive attention in society. Their structures have been updated rapidly, which brings great challenges for continuous detection and drug identification. The aim of this study was to elucidate the metabolites of 26 kinds of abused SCs produced in human liver microsomes (HLMs) and rats and to explore the metabolism of indole amides, indazole amides, azaindoles, naphthyl indoles, cyclopropylindoles, naphthyl benzimidazole, and naphthyl pyrrole SCs in vivo and in vitro. Human liver microsomes were incubated with SCs to simulate human metabolic processes, and the in vitro metabolic model of liver microsomes was established. After the SD rats were randomized into groups, 26 kinds of SCs and normal saline were injected respectively to establish the rat model after exposure. The metabolites were identified one by one using a UHPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap MS method to explore the metabolic law. A total of 609 metabolites were identified, involving 30 metabolic pathways. The metabolism of SCs was summarized from the parent nuclear group, the head group, the linking group, and the tail side chain, and the mass spectral fragmentation pattern of the metabolites was analyzed in order to provide reference for the examination and identification of SCs-related cases. There has been scant research on the experiences of families caring for adults with intellectual disability who use challenging behaviour as a way of making their needs known. The aim of this scoping review was to synthesize the qualitative research data on the family support experiences of adult family members with intellectual disability who use challenging behaviour in this way. A systematic search was undertaken from five databases during December 2024 and updated in April 2025. A total of 20 studies were included in the review. Data were analysed using a thematic analysis method. The number of study participants in these studies ranged from 4 to 30. Most of them were parents and predominantly mothers. The results show that caring for adults with intellectual disability and challenging behaviour reflects a dual reality. The negative experiences refer to caregiving difficulties and inadequate formal support, while the positive experiences are associated with support from informal sources and caregivers’ fulfilment and gains. The available research did not offer sufficient data for a synthesis of how families might be affected by challenging behaviour. Future research should investigate how the negative and positive aspects of their families can be shaped to make a positive impact on caring for people with intellectual disability and co-existing challenging behaviour. The ability of parents to maintain and develop family ties after a child is placed in public care is a fundamental yet challenging aspect of child welfare. While legal frameworks emphasize the preservation of parent–child relationships, limited research has explored how access to information affects parental involvement over time. This study draws on qualitative semi-structured interviews with 31 parents whose children were placed in public care to explore how parents experience information-sharing structures within child welfare services and how these experiences influence their ability to maintain and develop family ties with their children. A thematic analysis identifies three key themes: (1) lack of information, (2) conflicting and inconsistent information, and (3) bureaucratic barriers and systemic obstacles to information. Findings indicate that restricted and unpredictable access to updates fosters uncertainty, emotional distress, and a weakening sense of parental identity. Moreover, discretionary decision-making and institutional constraints contribute to inconsistencies in communication, further reinforcing parental exclusion. These findings highlight the role of information sharing as more than an administrative function; it is a structuring mechanism that facilitates or hinders ongoing parent–child relationships. The study highlights the importance of establishing clearer and more consistent communication structures to ensure that parents remain informed and can maintain a relationship with their child in public care. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their substituted derivatives (SPAHs) are persistent organic pollutants derived from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and industrial processes. These compounds are of global concern due to their carcinogenicity and environmental persistence. This study provides the first comprehensive analysis of PAH and SPAH contamination in Suzhou’s rapidly urbanizing watersheds, integrating ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry with multidimensional risk assessment to address critical gaps in understanding pollutant dynamics in urban aquatic systems. Key findings reveal that SPAHs were significantly more abundant than parent PAHs (mean ∑19 SPAHs = 107.43 ng/L vs. ∑8 PAHs = 48.05 ng/L), with hydroxylated derivatives accounting for 67.9% of the total SPAHs, indicating active environmental transformation processes. Source apportionment identified coal combustion and industrial emissions as the dominant contributors (58.2% of PAHs), directly linking contamination patterns to localized anthropogenic activities. Notably, industrial zones exhibited unexpected toxicity hotspots, where SPAH toxicity equivalents (e.g., 3-OH-BaP) surpassed parent PAHs 2–5-fold, demonstrating substituent-driven toxicity enhancement—a critical finding for regulatory prioritization. This study advances the field by uncovering SPAHs as emerging risks in urban waterways, challenging traditional PAH-centric monitoring frameworks, and providing a novel integration of analytical chemistry and spatial risk mapping to guide targeted pollution control (e.g., prioritizing industrial discharges and non-exhaust traffic emissions). Furthermore, it highlights the urgent need for updated toxicological databases to account for substituted PAH derivatives and advocates for the regulatory inclusion of SPAHs. These insights underscore the necessity of adapting environmental policies to address complex pollutant mixtures in rapidly developing regions, emphasizing the replicability of the proposed framework for urban watershed management. Amidst a period of sustained inflation and rising living costs, food insecurity is a growing concern in Australia and is correlated with poor diet quality and increased rates of non-communicable diseases. Currently there is a gap in knowledge of the impact of increasing cost-of-living pressures on the affordability of a healthy diet. As affordability plays a key role in food security, this cross-sectional study aimed to examine the costs, affordability, and differential of habitual (unhealthy) and recommended (healthy) diets within the Illawarra region of Australia and compare results to 2022 findings. The Healthy Diets Australian Standardised Affordability and Pricing tool was applied in six locations in the Illawarra, with two randomly selected each from a low, moderate, and high socioeconomically disadvantaged area. Costs were determined for three reference households: a family of four, a single parent family, and a single male. Affordability was determined for the reference households at three levels of income: median gross, minimum-wage, and welfare dependent. Data was compared to data collected in 2022 using the same methods and locations. Recommended diets cost 10.3–36% less than habitual diets depending on household type, but remained unaffordable for welfare dependant households and family households from socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, where diets required 25.5–45.9% of household income. Due to income increases, affordability of both diets has marginally improved since 2022, requiring 0.5–4.8% less household income. This study provides updated evidence that supports the urgent need for policies, interventions, and monitoring to widely assess and improve healthy diet affordability and decrease food insecurity rates. Possible solutions include increasing welfare rates above the poverty line and utilising nudge theory in grocery stores. Full article

Green synthesized nanoparticles (NPs) are arousing constantly increasing attention due to inherent advantages such as biocompatibility, nontoxicity, and cost-effectiveness. As the state of the art of this rapidly evolving topic demands a punctual update, the present study was focused on reviewing the novelty, feasibility, and effectiveness related to the specific category of red seaweed-derived NPs. Among algae, red seaweeds have already gained consideration in the global market due to their high content of primary and secondary metabolites, supporting multifunctional applications across various industries. This scoping review reveals how this interest has also driven their investigation as a natural source for the sustainable NP fabrication. The fragmentary body of studies was synthesized, identifying red seaweed NPs as a flourishing nanotechnological subgroup and meriting their own space in the scientific literature. Noteworthy, the great majority of the reviewed papers feature efficient controlled release, enhanced bioavailability, and reduced toxicity, making red seaweed NPs elective candidates for the medical sector as anticancer, antimicrobial, and antioxidant agents. Moreover, their parent natural counterparts seem to endow NPs with unexpected specificity toward biological targets such as prokaryotic and tumor cells. Nanotechnological solutions based on red seaweeds pave the way to a new avenue of opportunities and challenges. Full article

A child’s cancer diagnosis profoundly impacts the psychological well-being of parents. To alleviate parental distress, researchers developed Taking Back Control Together (TBCT), a manualized six-session program targeting individual problem-solving skills and dyadic coping. The current study aimed to refine TBCT for future uptake across different sites. We invited potential interventionists and local stakeholders from three pediatric oncology centers (CHU Sainte-Justine, CHU de Sherbrooke, and CHU de Québec) to join the refinement team. The final working team comprised 26 professionals, including social workers, psychologists, researchers, coordinators, and parent-partners. The study included eight 50- to 90-min discussion sessions designed to stimulate conversation and facilitate the exchange of ideas and perspectives. We used framework analysis to identify and describe patterns within the qualitative data. The data were organized into three categories: (1) intervention description, which addresses changes in personnel, modes of delivery, and tailoring to accommodate different family structures; (2) content modifications, which include language simplification and visual enhancements; and (3) factors influencing TBCT’s future uptake, such as accessibility, participant satisfaction, clinician compensation, and flexibility in program delivery. The direct output of this research is a refined program with an updated manual, tools, and format adapted for use in different sites. Full article

Background: Caring for children in palliative care especially impacts healthcare professionals’ personal and professional lives. Their emotional experience and needs are frequently forgotten. Healthcare professionals face emotional demands when caring for children with palliative needs and their parents. Objective: This scoping review aims to identify and map the scientific production about the emotional labor of healthcare professionals in pediatric palliative care. Methods: This scoping review was conducted according to the JBI recommendations and the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews. We searched 16 electronic databases in August 2023 and updated the search on 17 February 2025. Articles were screened according to eligibility criteria, and a content analysis allowed for a summary of key findings. Results: Eleven publications were selected. Most studies were conducted in the United States of America and with nurses as the professionals involved. Many publications were qualitative studies and developed in a neonatal intensive care context. Using content analysis, five themes were identified: (1) emotional experience of healthcare professionals, (2) relational context involved, (3) managing professional and personal boundaries, (4) intrapersonal strategies of emotional labor, and (5) social and organizational strategies of emotional labor. Conclusions: The importance of implementing emotional labor strategies is highlighted, especially intrapersonal, social, and organizational strategies. Education, training, and reflection are needed within a workplace culture that recognizes emotional experiences and supports the emotional management of healthcare professionals. Emotional labor in pediatric palliative care should be recognized. Further research in this area is needed. Full article

(1) Background: This study aimed to examine adult participants perceptions of the Thiwáhe Gluwáš’akapi (TG) program. We recruited 13 of 85 (15.3%) adult participants from various previous cohorts of the TG program, separated into lower and higher participation groups. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted. This study was conducted on a Northern Plains reservation, and interviews took place via phone. (2) Methods: Semi-structured interviews with 13 adult participants with children aged 10–12 were completed. Audio files were transcribed and analyzed with ATLAS.ti. (3) Results: Qualitative analysis of these interviews revealed several themes: positive reception by families, enhanced connections to Lakota culture and community, and improved familial relationships. Several barriers to participation emerged, such as difficulties with transportation, scheduling conflicts, and lack of time, which can inform implementation strategies. Observed themes showcase positive impacts of TG on parent–child relationships and cultural connection, aiding overall wellbeing and substance use discourse. (4) Conclusions: Participants in the TG program expressed high satisfaction with the program, gained new skills, and improved family dynamics. Future implementation of TG should include additional transportation support and session scheduling options, in addition to updated implementation strategies to further improve Lakota families’ mental health and wellbeing.
