In human–robot hybrid intelligent warehouses, pallets often come in various shapes and sizes, posing challenges for AGVs to automate pallet picking. This, in turn, reduces the overall operational efficiency of the warehouse. To address this issue, this paper proposes a lightweight component segmentation network using a dual-attention mechanism to achieve precise segmentation of the pallet’s stringer board and accurate localization of the pallet slots. To overcome the challenge of redundant computations in existing semantic segmentation models, which are unable to balance spatial details and high-level semantic information, this network utilizes a dual-branch attention mechanism within an encoder–decoder architecture to effectively capture spatial details. On this basis, a residual structure is introduced to reduce redundant network parameters, addressing issues like vanishing and exploding gradients during training. Due to the lack of a public pallet image segmentation dataset, the network was tested using a custom-made dataset. The results show that by extracting intermediate-, low-, and high-level features from dual-branch input images and integrating them to construct multi-scale images, precise segmentation of various types of pallets can be achieved with limited annotated images. Furthermore, to comprehensively evaluate the model’s robustness, additional pallet localization experiments were conducted under varying illumination conditions and background noise levels. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively identify and locate multi-category pallet targets while maintaining high segmentation accuracy under different lighting conditions and background interferences, verifying the model’s robustness in complex warehousing environments. Compared to the traditional model, the proposed model in this paper achieves a 10.41% improvement in accuracy and a 32.8% increase in image processing speed. The segmentation network we proposed is used for pallet-positioning experiments and has achieved good positioning results in pallet images taken from different distances and angles. Full article

As global trade continues to intensify, the role of pallets becomes increasingly crucial, as they are essential for the movement of goods worldwide. Wooden pallets are the most common packaging type in Italy and Europe, and their widespread use in distribution and freight transportation means that the relatively minor environmental impact of an individual pallet is greatly magnified by the overall scale of operations. The management of pallets can significantly influence both the emissions and the costs associated with pallet operations. This work presents a case study representative of the emerging trends in sustainable transportation and logistics in Italy, aiming to compare the carbon footprint of the standard pallet exchange system with the system employed by the company Nolpal. Unlike the conventional exchange model, which requires companies to purchase and own EPAL pallets, Nolpal provides leased pallets to the market across Italy, supported by a nationwide network of collection hubs. A comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) between the Nolpal system and the conventional pallet exchange system showed that Nolpal’s approach achieves a 35% reduction in CO2-eq emissions. These findings highlight how the company’s model could serve as a blueprint for future advancements in more sustainable pallet management strategies. Full article

As the use of passive ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) tags continues to surge in supply chain management, it becomes crucial to optimize their application at various levels of packaging to ensure reliability. These packaging levels play a pivotal role in achieving maximum readability and widespread adoption within the industry. This research paper aims to determine the most suitable passive UHF RFID tag for consumer goods filled with liquid and wrapped in foil packaging. In this study, two distinct RFID tags from separate manufacturers were evaluated. The research focused on critical factors such as reader height, distance, and item configuration across different packaging levels (item, case, and pallet). The results demonstrated that the packaging configuration impacts the readability of RFID tags at each packaging level. Through rigorous testing, it was found that achieving a tag readability rate higher than 99.7% is feasible and readability can be optimized by adjusting the reader position, packaging configuration, and tag design. The optimized configuration and testing platform developed in this study can be used for comparable products in other supply chains such as consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, and food. The results of this study emphasize RFID’s potential to revolutionize supply chain management. Full article

A sandwich pallet loading problem represents a significant challenge in the logistics of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), requiring optimisation of load units (LUs) arrangements to minimise their number in transportation and warehousing processes, leading to an environmental responsibility of organisations. This study introduces an innovative approach combining Dominance-Based Rough Set Theory (DRST) with a rule-based expert system to improve the efficiency of the pallet loading and to provide sustainable development. Key criteria and attributes for the LU assessment, such as weight, height, and fragility, are defined. DRST is utilised to classify these units, leveraging its capability to handle imprecise and vague information. The rule-based system ensures an optimal arrangement of LUs by considering critical control parameters, thereby reducing LU numbers and mitigating the environmental impact of logistics operations, as measured by energy consumption. The proposed approach is validated using real-world data from the FMCG distribution company. Results demonstrate that integrating DRST with an expert system improves decision-making consistency and significantly reduces the number of LUs. This study shows a way to increase the level of environmental responsibility of the organisation by cutting energy consumption and delivering economic and social benefits through fewer shipments. For example, the approach reduces energy consumption for a customer order delivery by 40%, from 0.60 to 0.36 (kWh/pskm). Full article

This study investigates the truck–cargo matching problem in less-than-truckload (LTL) logistics hubs, focusing on optimizing the three-dimensional loading of goods onto standardized pallets and assigning these loaded pallets to a fleet of heterogeneous vehicles. A two-stage hybrid heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve this complex logistics challenge. In the first stage, a tree search algorithm based on residual space is developed to determine the optimal layout for the 3D loading of cargo onto pallets. In the second stage, a heuristic online truck–cargo matching algorithm is introduced to allocate loaded pallets to trucks while optimizing the number of trucks used and minimizing transportation costs. The algorithm operates within a rolling time horizon, allowing it to dynamically handle real-time order arrivals and time window constraints. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves high pallet loading efficiency (close to 90%), near-optimal truck utilization (nearly 95%), and significant cost reductions, making it a practical solution for real-world LTL logistics operations. The logistics transportation system is critical to the United States economy. Underground Logistics Transportation (ULT) is a class of automated transportation systems in which vehicles carry freight through pipelines and tunnels between terminals. Being able to use a part of the underground space of existing highways will greatly facilitate the construction of such pipelines and tunnels and reduce their construction costs. Underground Logistics Transportation (ULT) could be the answer to make freight transport more sustainable and competitive. Texas highways and railroads are expected to increase by nearly 207% from 2003 to 2030. Truck tonnage will grow by 251%, while rail tonnage is forecasted to increase 118%. The number of trucks carrying NAFTA goods will increase by 263%, and the number of rail units will grow by 195%. This will have a profound impact on the highway and rail systems. The objective of this paper is to present requirements and operational components for three types of ULT lines: standard shipping containers, a standard crate size, and a standard pallet size. This study examines the use of ULT as a mode of underground transportation with the help of three case studies. This research shows that ULT is financially viable, feasible, greener, cost effective, and can become an important part of intermodal freight mobility. Full article

This work presents two mixed-integer programming models that intend to minimize the costs of the picking and storage operation through better planning and organization of the places occupied by the products in the warehouse. A large customer that stores frozen goods in a Portuguese cold chain logistics company was selected for the analysis of the allocation of the products in the warehouse and of the corresponding outbound movements. Data with 8525 movements that occurred during 2021 were collected for 228 different product references. For this case study, the products that had a picking place in the initial scenario now have pallets with all the goods in the reserve area, and vice versa. The mathematical models were permitted to obtain savings for the logistics operator costs of around 30.9%. The proposed models can, in the future, be applied in other warehouse scenarios to companies in completely different sectors of activity. Full article

Mixed palletizing constitutes one of the problems in the logistics domain aroused from the need for fast product movement to satisfy the continuously increasing number of customers with the demand for highly personalized goods. In a demanding environment, such as warehouses, where break bulk and the consolidation of loads take up most of the working time, the automation of mixed palletizing can lead to increased efficiency and speed while keeping errors to a minimum. Space utilization of pallets enables savings in storage and transportation costs, boosting the overall sustainable role of the Supply Chain sector. This paper presents the proposed approaches to mixed palletizing stemming from different fields, with a focus on recent developments in the application of Industry 4.0 technologies. Our research highlights quite a few areas that require attention from researchers. Full article

In this study, a numerical investigation was conducted on a verified packaging model, which sticks out beyond the pallet base area, which will evidently weaken its load-bearing capacity. This could lead to damage of the protected goods transported within this packaging. It might also result in the unnecessary overengineered design of the packaging, particularly when the potential for overhanging is anticipated beforehand, but its exact extent is not known. The article analyzed hundreds of cases, varying in terms of packaging dimensions (from 150 mm up to 600 mm), the extent of protrusion beyond the edge of the pallet (from 1% to 50% of box dimensions) and the use of various corrugated boards (B-, C-, EB- and BC-flute), in order to assess the decrease in the load-bearing capacity of the packaging compared to reference packaging, which was not overhanging on a pallet. For instance, it appeared that the decrease in the load-bearing capacity of the packaging when overhanging was insensitive to the corrugated cardboard material used. Additionally, the decrease in box strength was rapid while overhanging, even for a small value of overhanging. Full article

To examine the safety of food purchased online, a food safety project was conducted by the Office of Food and Drug Safety (OFDS) of Taichung City. Through collaboration with eight universities, the performance of food safety and hygiene in the physical stores engaged in online food businesses was assessed from October 2021 to January 2022. A total of 80 physical stores were involved in the present project. The results indicate that the most common nonconformities were as follows: (1) the food service standard form contract for distance transactions was not correctly displayed on websites (71%), (2) the food-related items were not sorted, were not stored on pallet boards or racks, and were not kept clean (46%), (3) the food preparation area and sales area did not have appropriate and adequate equipment for hand washing and drying (33%), and (4) the food safety and hygiene self-evaluation checklist was not prepared (33%). More efforts regarding food safety and hygiene are needed to improve and secure the knowledge of, attitude towards, and skills for good food safety and hygiene practices of online food businesses. In pipe organs, the oldest and most commonly chosen system for connecting the organist operator to the source of sound (i.e., the pipes to the action) is mechanical action. This article presents a mechatronic action with a voice coil motor (VCM) actuator to reproduce the action of a mechanical action on pipe organ. The mechatronic action makes it feasible to mechanically separate the keyboard from the pipes and to determine the control strategy for the mechatronic action by utilizing sensors, an actuator and a microcontroller. The time response of the organ pipe with mechanical action and the requirements for mechatronic action were outlined. The control strategy was preceded by measurements of the mechanical action and measurements of the behavior of the VCM actuator system, which moves the pneumatic valve pallet. Two control strategies, open-loop and closed-loop, were proposed and analyzed for the mechatronic action with the VCM actuator. According to the results, the suggested control strategies successfully reproduce the mechanical action’s behavior to a good extent. Full article

Increasing quantities of products are being transported across widely distributed supply networks; the sustainability of the packaging used to transport these goods, or unit loads, presents an area of potential concern. The most common type of unit load in the U.S. is wooden pallets supporting various configurations of stacked corrugated boxes. Research into unit load cost optimization revealed that increasing the stiffness of a pallet’s top deck can significantly affect the strength of the assembled, stacked corrugated boxes and provides opportunities to reduce the board grade required for accompanying corrugated boxes. However, there remains a knowledge gap regarding the environmental implications of this type of unit load optimization method. To address this, we conducted a life cycle analysis (LCA) to investigate the environmental implications of optimizing a unit load using this method. The environmental impacts of paired (pallet and box) unit load design scenarios (n = 108) were investigated using varied wood species, pallet top deck thicknesses, corrugated boxes sizes, corrugated flutes, and board grades. Initial and optimized unit load scenarios ensured that the unit loads offered equivalent performance. LCA results indicate that optimizing the unit load can reduce environmental impacts by up to 23%, with benefits accruing across most impact categories primarily due to the reduction in corrugated material used. Ozone depletion, the exception, was mainly affected by the increase in the amount of required pallet materials. This study provides minimum required conditions as preliminary guidance for determining the usefulness of unit load specific analysis, and a sensitivity analysis confirmed these values remain unchanged even with different transportation distances. Through the unit load optimization method, this study demonstrates that an effective way to reduce the overall environmental impact and cost of transported unit loads involves increasing the stiffness of the top decks and reducing the corrugated board grade. Space and labor are the two internal resources within a warehouse or cross-dock center which seek attention. Meaningful efforts in optimizing these two resources can reduce the operational cost or time of the goods delivery. The timely allocation of resources to order picking not only reduces the makespan and operational time but can also evade delay. In decentralized settings, where all the information is not properly shared between the players of the supply chain, miscommunication results in delays in product delivery. In this study, efforts were made to determine the pallet quantity of different product types in an order quantify when there is a gap in information shared and, based on that, the allocation of material handling devices or pickers was conducted. Each handling device is bounded by a workload to eliminate the option of idle resources and ensure it is utilized properly. A mixed integer linear programming model was formulated for this study and was solved using Lingo. Numerical experiments were performed under varying resource numbers and pallet quantities to investigate the circumstances where the number of pallet types and allocation of machines have the highest benefit. The results confirm that a change in the pallet quantity of the products increases the total picking time. However, an increase in the number of handling devices minimizes the level of over-utilization of a particular machine. Full article

Packing products into a pallet or other medium is an unavoidable activity for producing companies. In many cases, packing is based on operator experience and training using packing patterns that have worked before. Automated packing, on the other hand, requires a systematic procedure for devising packing solutions. In the scientific literature, this problem is known as 3D bin packing (3DBP) and many authors have proposed exact and heuristic solutions for many variations of the problem. There is, however, a lack of datasets that can be used to test and validate such solutions. Many of the available datasets use randomly generated products with extremely limited connection to real practice. Furthermore, they contain a reduced number of product configurations and ignore that packing relates to customers’ orders, which have specific relative mixes of products. This paper proposes a software toolbox for generating arbitrarily large datasets for 3DBPP based on real industry data. The toolbox was developed in connection with the analysis of a real dataset from the food and beverages sector, which enabled the creation of several synthetic datasets. The toolbox and the synthetic datasets are publicly available and can be used to generate additional data for testing and validating 3DBP solutions. The industry is increasingly becoming data dependent and driven. The ability to generate good quality synthetic data to support the development of solutions to real industry problems is of extreme importance. This work is a step in that direction in a domain where open data are scarce. Full article

Although attempts have recently been made to convert to an EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) system in Korea, it is difficult to calculate their mandatory recycling rates because they are treated as the same waste, even though they are clearly different from disposable consumer goods and plastic packaging materials. In this study, we tried to calculate waste generation based on the lifespan of plastic pallets and containers using the probability density function. The life distribution for each material (PE (polyethylene) and PP (polypropylene)) of pallets and containers was derived, and by applying this, the amount of waste generation from 2010 to 2027 was estimated. The Mean Time to Failure among pallets was 9.6 years for PE and 3.2 years for PP, and among containers, was 16.5 years for PE and 12.2 years for PP. Additionally, it was calculated that pallets had a waste generation rate of 67.5% to 75.1% by shipment, and containers 26.9–69.2%. These results can be used to calculate the waste generation rate when calculating the mandatory recycling rate of pallets and containers in the future. However, since pallets and containers are used second-hand, or are exported together with products after being shipped domestically, the amount flowing into recycling companies decreases, so it is considered that supplementation via material balance analysis is necessary to calculate the mandatory recycling rate.
