Exploring Coping Strategies and Quality of Life in Adolescents with Cancer: Pilot Study Findings

Objective: The objective of this exploratory pilot study was to examine the relationship between coping strategies and perceived quality of life in adolescents diagnosed with oncological diseases, with attention to the potential role of psychosocial factors in emotional adaptation. Method: The study included 20 adolescents (12 boys, 8 girls), aged 12–18 years, enrolled in the hospital school program in Bucharest, Romania, while receiving active oncological treatment. Participants completed two validated instruments: the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL—Cancer Module) and the KidCOPE questionnaire. Results: The mean quality of life score was 70, indicating a moderately good level of quality of life. Emotion-focused and avoidance-based strategies (distraction, social withdrawal, and acceptance) were most frequently reported, while problem-focused coping was less common. Regression analysis showed that coping dimensions explained approximately 26% of the variance in quality of life (R2 = 0.26, F(3,16) = 1.83, p = 0.183). Although the overall model was not statistically significant, an observed negative association was found between avoidant coping and quality of life (p = 0.037). These results should be interpreted with caution given the small sample size and cross-sectional design. Discussion: The findings suggest that adolescents with cancer may maintain a functional level of adaptation despite medical and emotional challenges, supported by medical staff and social resources. The predominance of avoidant strategies highlights the need for further investigation of their long-term implications. Conclusions: These preliminary results generate hypotheses and underline the importance of future research on psychological and educational interventions aimed at fostering more active coping strategies and supporting resilience in adolescents with cancer. No studies have induced maternal behavior in goats through hormonal treatment. We evaluated whether ovariectomized goats treated with estradiol benzoate (EB2; n = 7 nulliparous and 10 multiparous goats) or progesterone + estradiol benzoate (P4 + EB2; n = 7 nulliparous and 7 multiparous goats), before or after vagino-cervical stimulation (VCS), displayed maternal behavior. When all goats were measured within treatments, in the EB2 group, low-pitch bleats were more frequent, and the time spent cleaning the kids was longer after VCS (p < 0.01), while location changes were more frequent before VCS. In nulliparous goats, those in the EB2 group emitted more low-pitch bleats after VCS than before (p = 0.04). The frequency of location changes was higher before VCS than after (p = 0.05). In multiparous goats, the frequency of smelling the kids and aggression toward the kids before VCS was higher in the EB2 group than in the P4 + EB2 group (p < 0.01). Within treatments, the EB2 group emitted more low-pitch bleats after VCS than before (p = 0.01), and the duration of cleaning the kids was longer after VCS than before (p = 0.028). Within the P4 + EB2 group, the kids were smelled more frequently after VCS than before (p = 0.03). The maternal index after vagino-cervical stimulation was higher in goats with EB2 (p = 0.002). Nulliparous goats treated with P4 + EB2 had a higher maternal index compared with those treated with EB2 alone (p = 0.04). In conclusion, regardless of parity, maternal behavior induced with the EB2 treatment was better when VCS was applied. Likewise, maternal experience altered the response. In multiparous females, any of the treatments were better after VCS, while in nulliparous females, this was only evident with the EB2 treatment. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of age and sex on carcass traits, commercial cuts, and meat quality in crossbred kids. A total of 32 Boer × native crossbred kids were used, equally distributed according to sex and slaughter age: 16 male kids (8 slaughtered at 70 days and 8 at 100 days) and 16 female kids (8 at 70 days and 8 at 100 days). However, slaughter age significantly affected (p < 0.05) total weight gain, empty body weight, hot and cold carcass weights, loin eye area, internal fat percentage, and carcass compactness index. A significant interaction (p < 0.05) between sex and age was found for thoracic depth. In addition, leg length and leg compactness index were significantly influenced (p < 0.05) by both factors. Slaughter age also had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on internal body length, leg length, rump width, thigh perimeter, rump perimeter, chest circumference, thoracic depth, internal thoracic depth, and carcass compactness index. Regarding commercial cuts (neck, shoulder, ribs, loin, and leg), slaughter age had a significant influence (p < 0.05), reflecting the same pattern observed in hot and cold carcass weights, and indicating consistent distribution across cuts. In conclusion, slaughter age had a more pronounced effect on carcass characteristics than sex, highlighting its importance in determining meat yield and quality in crossbred kids. Full article

Background: Parenting styles are associated with various health outcomes among children, such as fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity, and emotional well-being. Previous literature suggests that responsive parenting styles are associated with improved mental health outcomes. This study examines the association between an adult’s responsive parenting style and the psychosocial outcomes of emotion regulation and loneliness among children. Methods: Using data from the U.S. National Cancer Institute’s Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) cross-sectional survey, this secondary data analysis study seeks to understand how perceived parental responsiveness is associated with adolescents’ emotional health outcomes from the perspective of the adolescent. The sample consisted of 12- to 17-year-olds (n = ~1560), mostly female (50.2%) and non-Hispanic White (63.7%), with a mean age of 14.48 years (SD = 1.61). Results: Through multivariable regression, we found that perceived parental responsiveness negatively predicted adolescent emotion suppression (β = −0.29, p < 0.001), even after controlling for sex, age, race/ethnicity, parental marital status, parental education level, parent’s time spent at work, and the number of kids in the household (β = −0.29, p < 0.001). We also found that perceived parental responsiveness was the strongest predictor for adolescent loneliness (β = −0.27, p < 0.001), even when controlling for sex, age, race/ethnicity, parental marital status, parental education level, parent’s time spent at work, and the number of kids in the household (β = −0.28, p < 0.001). Conclusions: These results suggest that implementing interventions targeting parental responsiveness may be beneficial to improving adolescents’ emotional well-being. Full article

Goats are important producers of meat, milk, hair, and leather. Early-weaned kids may encounter issues such as weaning stress and stress from high-density farming, which can hinder their growth and development. Therefore, exploring feed additives capable of alleviating stress in kids to enhance their growth performance is of particular importance. This experiment aims to investigate the effects of inulin on the growth performance, immune function, and intestinal health of weaned kids. Thirty healthy 60-day-old Leizhou black goat weaned kids with similar body weights (9.00 ± 0.05 kg) were selected and evenly divided into five groups by weight, with six kids in each group. The control group was fed the basal diet, while the AM HCl group received 0.05‰ aureomycin hydrochloride. The inulin groups were supplemented with 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% inulin, respectively. By comparison, the results of the 0.3% inulin group in this experiment were most consistent with those of the AM HCl group, and the final weight of the kids was the highest. The 0.3% and 0.5% inulin groups had significantly enhanced immune-related indicator (such as sIgA, IgA, and IgG) concentrations and antioxidant activities (p < 0.05) in kids. Inulin significantly increased cecal total volatile fatty acids (TVFA) and the activities of jejunal α-amylase, chymotrypsin, and trypsin (p < 0.05); the activities of intestinal antioxidant enzymes, including GSH-PX, SOD, and T-AOC, were significantly increased (p < 0.05); and the intestinal anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 was significantly elevated (p < 0.05). Inulin significantly increased the mRNA expression levels of the tight junction protein genes TJP1 (ZO-1) and OCLN in the jejunum (p < 0.05). It also significantly upregulated the mRNA expression levels of anti-inflammatory factors TGF-β1 and IL-10 while significantly reducing the mRNA level of pro-inflammatory factor IL-6 in the jejunum (p < 0.05). Therefore, inulin enhanced the growth performance and antioxidant capacity of weaned kids, improved the body’s immune response, and reduced inflammatory responses. Specifically, when comparing the growth status, antioxidant enzyme activity, and tight junction protein mRNA level among the groups of kids, the 0.3% inulin supplementation yielded the best results in this experiment. Background/Objectives: Hispanic adolescents experience elevated rates of disordered eating behaviors and body dissatisfaction, yet limited research has examined how gender and weight status interact to shape these risks within this population. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 680 Hispanic adolescents (ages 9–15) from a predominantly Mexican-American middle school. Participants completed the Modified Kids Eating Disorder Survey (M-KEDS), and height and weight were objectively measured to determine BMI-for-age percentile. Chi-square tests, Mann–Whitney U tests, and logistic regression were used to assess differences by gender and weight status, including interaction effects. Bonferroni correction was applied for multiple comparisons. Effect sizes (Cramér’s V, odds ratios with 95% CI) were reported. Results: Approximately 73% of participants reported body dissatisfaction, with significant differences observed by gender and weight status. Adolescents with overweight/obesity reported significantly higher negative weight attitudes and extreme weight control behaviors than healthy-weight peers (p < 0.001), with large effect sizes. Females endorsed more disordered attitudes and behaviors, except for exercise to lose weight, which was more common among overweight/obese males. Conclusions: These findings underscore the high prevalence and significance of disordered eating behaviors in Hispanic adolescents, including those at a healthy weight. Results highlight the importance of culturally tailored, gender-sensitive screening and prevention strategies. Schools serve as critical settings for early identification, and tools like the M-KEDS can help address disparities in care access and improve outcomes among Hispanic youth. Full article

This study optimized the cryopreservation protocol for cashmere goat semen by testing centrifugation speeds (750, 1000, 1250, 1500 rpm) for seminal plasma removal and L-proline concentrations (10, 30, 50 mmol/L) in a freezing extender. Semen from six 3-year-old breeding bucks of Inner Mongolia cashmere goats was evaluated post-thaw in terms of motility, membrane integrity, antioxidant capacity, and artificial insemination (AI) outcomes (n = 130 does). The results demonstrated that the group that underwent centrifugation at 1250 rpm saw significantly improved sperm motility (p < 0.05), curvilinear velocity (VCL, p < 0.05), and straight-line velocity (VSL, p < 0.05) compared to the other groups. The addition of 30 mmol/L L-proline further enhanced post-thaw sperm motility (p < 0.05), plasma membrane integrity (p < 0.05), and acrosome integrity (p < 0.05), while significantly reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS, p < 0.05) and malondialdehyde (MDA, p < 0.05) levels. This group also exhibited the highest antioxidant capacity, as indicated by elevated levels of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (p < 0.05). AI trials revealed that semen treated with 1250 rpm centrifugation and 30 mmol/L L-proline achieved the highest kidding rate (56.82%), significantly outperforming the control group (37.21%, p < 0.05). Meanwhile, no significant differences were observed in prolificacy or offspring sex ratio (p > 0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrates that combining 1250 rpm centrifugation for seminal plasma removal with the addition of 30 mmol/L L-proline to the freezing extender significantly improves the quality of cryopreserved cashmere goat semen and enhances AI outcomes. Background: Childhood obesity is a global health concern. Early development of fundamental movement skills (FMS) and adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) are key modifiable factors for prevention. This study assessed the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary, school-based intervention for childhood obesity prevention. Methods: Children aged 3–5 years from a preschool in Messina, Italy, participated in a 9-month intervention integrating nutritional education and physical activity. FMS were evaluated using the MOBAK test. Anthropometric measurements and MD adherence (through the Kid-Med questionnaire) were collected. Caregivers completed an online survey reporting lifestyle changes. Results: Significant improvements were observed in FMS: object control (score 1) increased from 2.67 ± 1.78 to 4.28 ± 1.82, locomotor skills (score 2) from 4.69 ± 1.96 to 5.83, 5.83 ± 1.70, and total MOBAK score (score 3) from 7.35 ± 3.09 to 10.11± 2.94. (p < 0.001 for all). Kid-Med scores significantly improved from (3.79 ± 2.31 vs. 5.03 ± 2.69) (p = 0.0027), indicating enhanced MD adherence. Post-intervention, adherence was classified as poor (27.4%), moderate (53.2%), and optimal (19.4%). Although only a minority of parents reported lifestyle changes, over 50% noted increased fruit and vegetable intake in their children. Males showed higher FMS scores and waist circumference compared to females. Conclusions: A school-based multidisciplinary intervention significantly improved motor competence and dietary habits in preschool children. These findings underscore the importance of early, integrated strategies involving families and educators to support healthy development and prevent childhood obesity. Full article

Understanding the genetic and phenotypic basis of economically important traits is essential for designing effective breeding programs in livestock. This study aimed to evaluate the phenotypic performance and estimate genetic parameters for one reproductive trait—litter size at birth (LSB)—and three pre-weaning growth traits—birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), and average daily gain (ADG)—in a population of 1888 Zaraibi kids born between 2018 and 2023. Genetic parameters were estimated using animal models implemented in the MTDFREML software. The overall least squares means (±standard error) for LSB, BW, WW, and ADG were 2.22 ± 0.02, 2.03 ± 0.01 kg, 10.22 ± 0.05 kg, and 90.00 ± 0.50 g/day, respectively. Statistical analyses indicated that month of birth, year of birth, and type of birth had significant (p < 0.05) effects on all traits, while the sex of the kids had no significant effect (p > 0.05) on LSB. Direct heritability estimates (h2d) derived from Model 1 (including additive genetic, permanent environmental, and residual effects) were 0.13 ± 0.01 for LSB, 0.30 ± 0.04 for BW, 0.38 ± 0.01 for WW, and 0.30 ± 0.10 for ADG. Under Model 2 (which incorporated maternal genetic effects and their covariance with direct genetic effects), maternal heritability (h2m) estimates for LSB, BW, WW, and ADG were 0.05 ± 0.01, 0.15 ± 0.01, 0.12 ± 0.01, and 0.14 ± 0.01, respectively. Overall, the results emphasize the importance of maternal genetic effects in influencing pre-weaning growth traits. Therefore, maternal genetic components should be explicitly considered in genetic evaluation and selection strategies aimed at improving early growth performance in Zaraibi goats. Full article

Liaoning cashmere goats is a dual-purpose breed valued for premium cashmere fiber and meat yields, and there is currently a lack of optimized strategies for meat quality, including skeletal muscle development and lipid partitioning. This investigation systematically examines how melatonin administration modulates gastrointestinal microbiota and antioxidant capacity to concurrently enhance skeletal muscle hypertrophy and redirect lipid deposition patterns, ultimately improving meat quality and carcass traits in Liaoning cashmere goats. Thirty female half-sibling kids were randomized into control and melatonin-treated groups (2 mg/kg live weight with subcutaneous implants). Postmortem analyses at 8 months assessed carcass traits, meat quality, muscle histology, plasma metabolites, and gut microbiota (16S rRNA sequencing). Melatonin supplementation decreased visceral adiposity (perirenal, omental, and mesenteric fat depots with a p < 0.05) while inducing muscle fiber hypertrophy (longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) and biceps femoris (BF) with p < 0.05). The melatonin-treated group demonstrated elevated postmortem pH24h values, attenuated muscle drip loss, enhanced intramuscular protein deposition, and improved systemic antioxidant status (characterized by increased catalase and glutathione levels with concomitant reduction in malondialdehyde with p < 0.05). Melatonin reshaped gut microbiota, increasing α-diversity (p < 0.05) and enriching beneficial genera (Prevotella, Romboutsia, and Akkermansia), while suppressing lipogenic Desulfovibrio populations, and concomitant with improved intestinal morphology as evidenced by elevated villus height-to-crypt depth ratios. These findings establish that melatonin-mediated gastrointestinal microbiota remodeling drives anabolic muscle protein synthesis while optimizing fat deposition, providing a scientifically grounded strategy to enhance meat quality. Optimal litter size on goat farms is an important trait for production and economic efficiency. The ovary and uterus, key components of the reproductive system, play essential roles in reproductive performance. In recent years, numerous genes linked to goat reproductive performance have been identified. However, reliable marker genes that are specifically associated with litter size require further exploration. In this study, eight Jining Grey goats were divided into high-yield (n = 4) and low-yield (n = 4) groups on the basis of their kidding records to identify key regulatory genes associated with litter size. Ovarian and uterine tissues were collected during oestrus for RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). After two outlier uterine tissue samples were excluded, the remaining 14 samples were subjected to WGCNA and differential expression gene (DEG) analysis. A total of 1224 DEGs were identified (|log2(fold change) ≥ 1|, p ≤ 0.05), including 912 in ovarian tissues (monozygotic vs. polyzygotic, MO vs. PO) and 312 in uterine tissues (MU vs. PU). Through WGCNA, we identified 15 coexpression modules, among which four key modules were significantly correlated with litter size. Our analysis focused on the magenta and green modules, as they contained 11 and 3 candidate genes overlapping with the DEGs, respectively. Notably, three genes—FOXC1, FOSB, and FGL2—were found to play important roles in both ovarian and uterine tissues. These genes mainly participate in regulatory processes such as RNA polymerase II transcription factor activity, calcium ion binding, and extracellular space organization, highlighting their potential as key candidates for future research. Overall, we identified several gene modules associated with litter size in goats, providing potential molecular markers for investigating litter size traits in Jining Grey goats. Full article

Background/Objectives: In the context of acute heart failure, proenkephalin A (penKid) has emerged as a prognostic marker for acute kidney injury (AKI), whereas bioactive adrenomedullin (bio-ADM) has been identified as a significant biomarker linked to shock and organ dysfunction. This raises the question of whether they can serve as predictors of postoperative complications in patients receiving left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). Methods: This observational study prospectively enrolled patients who had received LVAD implantation. Routine laboratory values as well as plasma levels of penKid and bio-ADM were assessed at four time intervals, spanning from preinduction of anesthesia to 48 h post surgery. Clinical data, the HeartMate 3-risk-score (HM3RS), HeartMateII-risk-score (HMRS), Michigan-right-heart-failure risk score (MRHFS), Euromacs-RHFS (EURORHFS), and kidney failure risk score (KFR) were calculated. Multivariate logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis were performed. We entered the biomarkers with the established risk scores into the models. Results: In 20 patients who had undergone LVAD implantation, preoperative penKid level was a predictor of postoperative AKI (OR: 1.05, 95%-CI: 1.0–1.09; p = 0.049) and 30-day mortality (OR: 1.01, 95%-CI: 1.0–1.02; p = 0.033). Bio-ADM was the only predictor of postoperative right heart failure (RHF) (OR: 1.11, 95%-CI: 1.01–1.23; p = 0.034) and rehospitalization (OR: 1.06, 95%-CI: 1.0–1.13; p = 0.047). In the ROC analysis, bio-ADM, as a predictor of post-LVAD RHF, had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.88. When bio-ADM was added to the accepted clinical scores for post-LVAD RHF prediction (CRITT-score, MRHFS, and EURORHFS), the AUC reached 0.98. The AUC for preoperative penKid, as a predictor of postoperative AKI, was 0.95, and after adding its predictive value to the KFR score, the AUC reached 0.97. Conclusions: In the present study, the biomarkers penKid and bio-ADM predicted clinically significant patient outcomes after LVAD implantation such as AKI, RHF, and 30-day mortality. Adding biomarkers to well-established risk scores improved the AUC for prediction of postoperative complications. Full article

This study focused on the physicochemical characteristics of the fermented products (FP) produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CU33 (CU33) from soybean meal with 70% moisture. Additionally, it investigated the effects of adding FP to starter on the growth performance, general health performance, blood clinical biochemistry, and immunity of Alpine goat kids during the weaning period. Forty 14-day-old male Alpine goat kids were randomly assigned into starter supplementations of 0, 0.1, 0.3, or 0.5% CU33 FP for 8 weeks, and each goat kid was individually raised in stainless steel cage (width 70 cm × height 70 cm × depth 80 cm). The moisture after fermentation was linearly decreased as fermentation time increased (p < 0.05), and the pH value and Bacillus-like counts reached the highest at 24 h of fermentation. The activity of neutral protease and alkaline protease, the content of surfactin and γ-PGA, the viscosity, and the odor of CU33 FP were linearly increased as fermentation time increased (p < 0.05). The neutral protease activity, surfactin, γ-PGA, and viscosity increased after drying, whereas the moisture, pH value, Bacillus-like counts, and odor decreased (p < 0.05). During the pre-weaning period (0–4 weeks), the body weight gain (BWG) of the 0.1% CU33 FP group was higher than that of the control group (p < 0.05), and all CU33 FP groups showed a better feed conversion ratio (FCR) than the control group (p < 0.05). During the post-weaning period (4–8 weeks) and throughout the entire experimental period (0–8 weeks), the BWG and FCR of all CU33 FP groups were better than those of the control group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, both BWG and FCR improved linearly as the dietary level of CU33 FP increased (p < 0.05). Simultaneously, the fecal consistency index at 0–4 and 4–8 weeks and the coliform counts in the rectum at 4 weeks linearly decreased (p < 0.05), and the Bacillus-like counts in the rectum linearly increased at 4 and 8 weeks (p < 0.05). Phosphorous (P), total protein (TP), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in serum at 8 weeks, and the oxidative burst capacity at 4 weeks linearly increased as the dietary level of CU33 FP increased, but the skin sensitization test showed a quadratic curve, and the 0.1% CU33 FP group had the lowest performance (p < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation with 0.1% of CU33 FP can improve the growth performance, diarrhea status, and oxidative burst capacity of Alpine goat kids, showing the potential to be a feed additive. We evaluated the possible effect of maternal social rank (SR) concerning different morpho-physiological maternal indicators such as live weight (LWM, kg), body condition score (BCS, units), thoracic diameter (TD, cm), thoracic perimeter (TP, cm), and serum glucose content (GLU, mg dL−1), upon the kid’s live weights (LWGK, kg) during the birth-to-weaning period. To define the SR [either high (HSR) or low (LSR)], a behavioral study was conducted on pregnant goats managed under semi-extensive conditions in northern arid Mexico (25° N; Alpine–Saanen–Nubian × Criollo; n = 15, 2–3 y/old) 30 days before the expected kidding date. The behavioral study was conducted during feeding time (i.e., 08:00, 13:00, and 17:00; 60 min test−1, 180 min d−1). The HSR goats showed higher values (p < 0.05) regarding prepartum, parturition, postpartum weights, and zoometric values. However, no differences (p > 0.05) between HSR and LSR goats occurred concerning the maternal serum glucose values, litter size, individual kid weights, or litter weights at weaning. Full article

Background/Objectives: The GO-TRYKE® Kid (GTK®) is an arm- and leg-powered tricycle which, in addition to promoting strength, endurance, and coordination, aims to reactivate the central pattern generators of the spine for locomotion through cyclical movements. The present study investigated the effects of GTK® training on walking ability, GTK® riding performance, and health-related quality of life in children with walking disabilities. Methods: Nine children trained with the device twice a week for nine weeks. Short- and long-term effects on walking ability were measured using the timed up and go test (TUG) and the two-minute walk test (2MWT). GTK® riding performance and health-related quality of life were compared before and after the intervention period. Results: While no long-term effect on walking was found, a significant short-term effect on functional walking ability was observed (p = 0.009). GTK® riding performance improved significantly over the training period (p = 0.004). There were no significant changes in health-related quality of life. Conclusions: GTK® enables children with walking disabilities to participate in cycling as part of play and sport. Further research is required to investigate its functional and participatory effects, as there is significant potential to improve physical activity and overall well-being in this population.
