The Mediating Role of Perceived Social Support in the Association Between Self-Esteem and Self-Harm in Slovak Adolescents

Self-harm represents a significant mental health concern during adolescence and is associated with various psychological risk factors. The present exploratory probe examines the mediating role of perceived social support in the relationship between self-esteem and self-harm among adolescents. The sample consisted of 155 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years (M = 16.35, SD = 1.73). Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), self-harm was assessed using a modified version of the Self-Harm Inventory (SHI), and perceived social support was measured using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Data were analyzed using correlation analysis, linear regression, and mediation. More than half of the participants (53.5%) reported repeated engagement in self-harming behavior. Self-esteem was significantly negatively associated with self-harm (ρ = −0.508, p < 0.001) and explained approximately 22% of the variance in self-harm. Mediation analysis indicated that perceived social support partially mediated the relationship between self-esteem and self-harm. Lower self-esteem was associated with lower perceived social support, which in turn predicted higher levels of self-harm. The indirect effect was significant (B = −0.31, 95% BootCI (−0.63, −0.09)). These findings highlight the protective role of perceived social support and suggest that strengthening adolescents’ self-esteem and social support networks may contribute to the prevention of self-harm. Background: Early detection and monitoring of enamel changes during caries lesion formation are essential for preventive management. This study aimed to evaluate time-dependent enamel demineralization using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and to compare its diagnostic performance with laser fluorescence and digital colorimetric image analysis. Methods: Twelve sound human permanent teeth were subjected to a gel-based lactic acid demineralization for 14 days. Assessments were performed at baseline and after 3, 7, and 14 days. Enamel mineral density (MD) and demineralization depth (DD) were measured using micro-CT. Laser fluorescence was evaluated using DIAGNOdent, while colorimetric changes were analyzed through standardized digital imaging using the CIE Lab* system, including ΔE and Whiteness Index (WI). Statistical analysis included repeated measures ANOVA and Pearson correlation (p < 0.05). Results: A significant time-dependent progression of enamel demineralization was observed. Demineralization depth increased from 0.0828 mm (3 days) to 0.234 mm (14 days) (p < 0.001), while mineral density decreased significantly over time (p < 0.001). DIAGNOdent values showed significant increases after 7 and 14 days (p = 0.002). Colorimetric analysis revealed early detectable changes, with ΔE exceeding clinically perceptible thresholds as early as day 3. WI values increased progressively, indicating enhanced enamel opacity. A weak but significant negative correlation between MD and DD was found (p = 0.04). Conclusions: Enamel demineralization progresses in a time-dependent manner and can be effectively monitored using micro-CT, laser fluorescence, and colorimetric analysis. Digital colorimetric analysis may serve as a valuable adjunctive tool in caries diagnostics. Full article

Monosex culture has been shown to enhance farming productivity in several decapod crustaceans, and it has also been suggested that this approach holds high potential for the sustainable aquaculture of the Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis. Pronounced sexual dimorphism in E. sinensis facilitates the implementation of a monosex culture. This study aimed to compare the growth, gonadal development, culture performance, and economic outcomes of two monosex culture modes, i.e., an all-female culture and an all-male culture, as well as a mixed-sex culture (males: females = 1:1) during an 8-month growth period in earthen ponds. The results showed that: (1) Throughout the grow-out period, the average body weight in both monosex culture treatments was consistently higher than in the mixed-sex treatment, with a significantly greater body weight in the all-female and all-male treatments than that of males and females in the mixed-sex treatment being detected during mid-June and October, respectively (p < 0.05). (2) The percentages of both sexes that had finished puberty molting were mostly similar between the monosex and mixed-sex treatments between July 20th to October 10th, although the all-female treatment had a significantly lower puberty molting percentage than the mixed-sex treatment on August 10th (p < 0.05). Gonadosomatic index (GSI) values were similar between the monosex and mixed-sex treatments for both males and females (p > 0.05). (3) At harvest period, the final body weight in the all-male treatment was significantly higher than that of the mixed-sex treatment (p < 0.05). In contrast, the all-female treatment exhibited a significantly higher survival rate and a lower limb injury rate compared with the mixed-sex treatment (p < 0.05). As a result, the yield of the all-male and all-female treatments exceeded that of the males and females in the mixed-sex treatment by 24% and 13%, respectively. Additionally, the mixed-sex treatment also had a significantly higher feed conversion ratio (p < 0.05). Finally, the monosex treatments had a higher proportion of large crabs (males ≥ 200 g, females ≥ 175 g) and a lower proportion of small crabs (males ≤ 150 g, females ≤ 100 g) compared to the mixed-sex treatment. (4) In terms of economic benefits, net profit and return on investment (ROI) were highest under the all-female treatment, while the mixed-sex treatment recorded the lowest total return, net profit, and ROI (p < 0.05). In conclusion, an all-female culture is recommended for the grow-out culture period of E. sinensis, as it led to a higher survival rate, produced larger-sized crabs and generated greater overall economic benefit. The increasing consumption of pharmaceuticals associated with global population growth has intensified concerns regarding their release into aquatic environments and potential ecotoxicological effects. In this context, this study evaluated the ecotoxicity and biodegradation of the widely used corticosteroid prednisone. Ecotoxicity assays were performed using aquatic organisms representing different trophic levels: Artemia salina (microcrustacean), Aliivibrio fischeri (marine bacterium), and the cyanobacterium Microcystis novacekii. Biodegradation assays were conducted using M. novacekii. Prednisone was tested at concentrations ranging from 5 to 100 mg/L, corresponding to its maximum solubility in water. All experiments were carried out in accordance with standardized protocols (ABNT NBR 16530, ABNT NBR 15411-3, ISO 11348-3, and OECD 201). No toxic effects were observed for prednisone in any of the tested organisms, as responses at all tested concentrations, including the highest, were not significantly different from the control. Therefore, it was not possible to estimate EC50 values within the tested concentration range. According to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), substances with effect concentrations above 100 mg/L are considered non-toxic to aquatic organisms. During biodegradation assays, a reduction in prednisone concentration was observed during the growth of M. novacekii, which was associated with an increase in the pH of the culture medium. These results suggest that prednisone degradation occurred indirectly through pH changes caused by cyanobacterial growth rather than through direct metabolic pathways. Full article

Background/Objectives: Periodontitis represents a significant global health burden, yet preventive health literacy remains critically low among emerging adults—a developmental stage where lifelong health behaviors crystallize. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the GUM (an acronym of Gum Understanding Mission) game, an interactive gamified digital tool incorporating AI-informed or manual feedback, for improving periodontitis literacy among tenth-semester Software Engineering students at the University of Guayaquil. Methods: In a controlled pre-test/post-test experiment, 50 participants were randomly assigned to either the GUM game intervention or a traditional lecture. Both groups completed identical knowledge assessments immediately before and after their respective 50-min instructional sessions. The GUM game featured adaptive questioning, immediate elaborated feedback, and comprehensive performance analytics, while the control group received instructor-led didactic instruction with a subsequent question-and-answer session. Results: The GUM group improved from a baseline of 21% to 94% correct responses, while the lecture group increased from 22% to 67% (p<0.001). Error reduction was 74% in the GUM group versus 45% in the control group. However, the study’s scope is currently limited to a single, digitally literate cohort, and knowledge retention over time was not assessed. Conclusions: These findings suggest that a self-directed, feedback-driven serious game can substantially outperform traditional methods in fostering periodontitis literacy within this population. Further research is needed across diverse populations with extended follow-up periods to assess knowledge retention and generalizability. Full article

Mushroom use dates back to ancient times, and it currently remains significant among indigenous and urban populations as a medicinal option. Psilocybe species are suggested to modify emotions when administered in macro- or microdose form for the treatment of anxiety and depression, both often affected by a delayed onset and adverse effects of current pharmacological therapy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anxiolytic and/or antidepressant-like effects of P. cubensis mushroom aqueous extract (PcAE) microdosing in mice using open-field and rota-rod tests, followed by plus-maze or forced swimming tests. We also evaluated changes in neuronal activity and dendritic maturation using electrocorticography (ECoG) and immunohistochemical techniques. The outcomes were compared with an effective macrodose of PcAE and antidepressant fluoxetine (FLX). For this study, mice were grouped as follows: (1) vehicle, (2) acute, and (3) repeated (10 days) PcAE microdosing (1 µg/kg); (4) single PcAE macrodose (1 g/kg); and (5) acute and (6) repeated reference drug fluoxetine (FLX, 10 mg/kg).The anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects using microdosing were similar to those observed with macrodoses of PcAE and FLX; significant dose- and/or time-dependent changes in the ECoG and dendritic maturation of hippocampus neurons were also observed, in addition to altered corticosterone levels. To conclude, P. cubensis mushroom promotes brain effects in mice after micro- and macrodosing, supporting its potential as a therapeutic alternative for mental health. Full article
