Background/Objectives: The effective management of dental practices is increasingly recognized as a key factor in ensuring high-quality care, efficient operations, and interdisciplinary collaboration. While many dentists assume managerial responsibilities, formal training in healthcare or dental practice management may influence the quality of these practices. This study aims to evaluate the differences in organization, efficiency, and quality of care between dental clinics managed by dentists who have completed management training and those who have not. It also explores dentists’ knowledge and attitudes regarding dental practice management. Methods: A cross-sectional, observational, case–control study was conducted between 14 April and 14 May 2023, using an online questionnaire distributed to licensed dental practitioners in Romania. A total of 136 dentists participated, divided into a study group (n = 60), who had completed management courses and a control group (n = 76) who had not. Descriptive statistics and comparative analyses (t-tests, Chi-square tests) were performed using SPSS version 24, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Dentists with managerial training demonstrated greater implementation of strategic planning, financial performance monitoring, quality management, and use of digital tools. They also reported higher collaboration with interdisciplinary professionals—orthodontist 76.7% in the study group vs. 63.2% in the control group, medical assistant 78.3% in the study group vs. 47.4% in the control group, front desk 43.3% in the study group vs. 18.4% in the control group; better delegation of tasks—61.7% in the study group vs. 27.6% in the control group; and greater concern for team development—95% in the study group vs. 71% in the control group; and patient rights—81.7% in the study group vs. 75% in the control group. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were noted in management practices, opinions about the optimal manager for a dental practice, and the use of software tools. Conclusions: Managerial training equips dentists with critical skills for enhancing operational efficiency and care quality. Integrating management education into dental curricula and continuing professional development can substantially improve the sustainability and performance of dental practices. Full article

The majority of Australians who die each year do so in an acute hospital setting and are cared for during the end of their life by a multidisciplinary team comprising nurses, medical staff, and allied health staff. Despite the range of professional disciplines that services this patient group, the experiences of the staff providing this end-of-life care is not well understood. This study sought to explore the experiences of multidisciplinary staff providing this care at an acute hospital in Sydney, Australia and to identify the barriers that affect the end-of-life care provided. Data were collected through an online survey from a multidisciplinary sample group. A combination of statistical analysis and thematic analysis was used to analyse the data with four key themes emerging. These themes included the implications for staff working in end-of-life care, communication gaps in the acute hospital setting, recognition of the dying process, and improvement of end-of-life care through further education. This study highlighted the challenges experienced by healthcare staff in the end-of-life context, with recommendations provided for increased education and training. The need for staff to receive training with a focus on end-of-life skill development, professional confidence, and preparedness for end-of-life conversations was highlighted. Full article

The impact of work engagement and burnout on medical activities, physicians’ performance, and quality of care has gained interest over the last decades. However, the effect of demographics, job-related, and organizational variables on burnout and work engagement in young endocrinologists has not been fully investigated. To assess the impact of demographics, job-related, and organizational variables on burnout and work engagement in young endocrinologists who joined the Italian Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. The levels of burnout and work engagement were assessed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, respectively, as a part of an online survey of the “Associazione Medici Endocrinologi” addressed to young members (31–40 years). Eighteen MANOVAs were applied to analyze differences in burnout and work engagement based on demographic, job-related, and organizational factors. We collected responses from 160 young endocrinologists, mainly women (80.6%), aged 31–35 years (33.8%) and 36–40 years (66.2%). Most were in a stable relationship with (40%) or without (45%) children. Most of them worked in hospitals or local healthcare districts (35.6%), as independent contractors (31.9%), or as Ph.D. students or residents (25.6%). Multivariate analyses found no statistically significant differences in burnout and work engagement due to demographics (gender, age, and partnership) and job-related variables (type of job and contract). On the other hand, organizational variables (levels of conflict amongst colleagues, more than expected time spent working, and no involvement in team-building activities) were associated with higher emotional exhaustion, lower dedication, and less vigor. The novelty of the study is that both burnout and work engagement can be affected by organizational variables in early-career Italian endocrinologists, highlighting the need for supporting the healthcare system to overcome this gap. Background/Objectives: Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) place an excessive strain on health systems in disaster-affected settings and may lead to a parallel public health emergency lasting months or years after a disaster. Although NCDs are increasingly recognized as a major challenge in disasters and humanitarian emergencies, a dedicated and standardized response plan is missing, as well as a shortage of evidence-based guidelines for NCD management in theses contexts. Over the years, Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) have traditionally been deployed to manage acute conditions such as trauma and infectious diseases that quickly impact health systems. However, greater attention is needed to address acute exacerbation of NCDs and to ensure continuity of care for people with chronic health needs in disasters and emergencies. Methods: We conducted a scoping review exploring the EMTs’ management of chronic NCDs during disasters and humanitarian emergencies, in order to identify the strategies adopted, the challenges faced, and the recommendations provided to address this health problem. The online databases PubMed, Scopus, and EBSCO were searched to identify relevant papers. Results: After screening the papers against the eligibility criteria, 17 publications were retrieved. Five different areas of intervention concerning EMTs and NCDs management were identified: (i) EMTs pre-departure preparation, operational time, and length of stay; (ii) EMTs staff composition and training; (iii) EMTs logistics; (iv) EMTs integration with local health services; (v) EMTs clinical data record. Conclusions: The findings emerging from this study showed that NCDs significantly impact disaster response in different settings, underlining the need to implement a range of EMTs activities to guarantee assistance for chronic health needs. In view of strengthening the ability of health systems to cope with the NCDs’ burden, the EMTs’ initiatives should be considered as a bridge between the support provided during the acute phase of an emergency and the continuation of care ensured by the system in its early recovery phase. The primary aim of this scoping review was to identify practical risk factors associated with an elevated risk in anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACLI) in elite male field team athletes that can be applied meaningfully in screening tools by team support personnel. Five relevant databases were searched (SportsDISCUS, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) following the PRISMA-ScR protocol using the criteria: (1) written in English and peer-reviewed; (2) full-text available; (3) discussed ACLI screening tests; (4) an elite athlete cohort; (5) males; (6) field team sport. The search identified 962 manuscripts, with nine manuscripts meeting the inclusion criteria. Field sports represented were soccer (n = 7), American football (n = 1), and a mixed-sport cohort of soccer, rugby, and field hockey (n = 1). Manuscripts reported modifiable risk factors (the joint range of motion n = 1, biomechanics n = 3, and strength n = 1) and non-modifiable (anatomical n = 2 and genetics n = 2). Whilst the joint range of motion screening indicated statistical significance to ACLI risk, there was little predictive value. Non-modifiable risk factors were significantly correlated to ACLI and reported a higher predictive capacity for ACLI risk. There is limited systematic research investigating and providing predictive insight for screening tests of ACLI risk in elite male team sport athletes. Future prospective investigations should consider the validity of ACLI screening tests in elite male field-based sport populations, and establish efficacy, so that sporting clubs can confidently implement screening tests of value into practice. Aim: The management of low-grade gliomas (LGGs) is evolving with new insights into disease biology. Furthermore, recently, the phase III INDIGO1 study highlighted the benefits of an IDH inhibitor, vorasidenib, in treating residual or recurrent grade 2 IDH-mutant gliomas following surgery alone. We aimed to characterise the current patterns of care for patients with LGGs in Australia and New Zealand, including the role of vorasidenib. Methods: An online survey examining respondents’ practice setting, caseload, and preferred treatment approach to three clinical scenarios was distributed through the Cooperative Trials Group for Neuro-Oncology, New Zealand Aotearoa Neuro-Oncology Society, and the Australian and New Zealand Society for Neuropathology in December 2023 with three reminders in April, June, and September of 2024. Results: The survey response rate was 19.6% (57/291), 87.7% from Australia, and 12.3% from New Zealand, spanning medical oncology (45.7%), pathology (22.8%), radiation oncology (17.5%), and neurosurgery (14.0%). Case 1 examined an IDH-mutant grade 2 astrocytoma following gross total resection. Observation alone was recommended by 93%. Case 2 examined an incompletely resected IDH-mutant grade 2 astrocytoma. If feasible, 38% recommended further surgery and 83% adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy. After 12 months of disease stability, 53% of the respondents preferred vorasidenib over the existing therapies. Case 3 examined an incompletely resected IDH-mutant grade 3 oligodendroglioma. No respondents recommended observation alone, with 26% recommending salvage surgery and 97% recommending further chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Conclusions: This study describes current management practices for LGGs in Australia and New Zealand, showing ongoing variation and a cautious approach to integrating IDH inhibitors. This highlights the critical role of multidisciplinary team-based decision-making in increasingly complex clinical situations. Full article

Background: Within the project “Ulcus Cruris Care”, a disease management intervention to improve general practice care for patients with venous leg ulcer was developed, comprising online teaching for practice teams, standardized patient education, and case management. Implementation of the intervention was piloted and evaluated via a process evaluation. This study aims to evaluate contentedness with the intervention, implementation effort, implementation determinants, intervention fidelity, and perceived intervention effects using a mixed-methods process evaluation. Methods: The mixed-methods process evaluation explored the views of general practitioners, medical assistants and patients regarding the intervention components. Data were collected through semi-structured telephone interviews and a survey questionnaire. Qualitative data were first analyzed inductively, followed by a deductive–inductive approach based on the Theoretical Domains Framework. Survey data were analyzed descriptively. Results: Participants (n = 21) reported a strong contentedness with the intervention, high intervention fidelity, low implementation effort, and a change in perception of compression therapy as the central treatment element. Healthcare professionals emphasized increased patient education and patient and family involvement. Patients reported feeling better informed and empowered to take an active role in their treatment, primarily due to increased knowledge and skills in compression therapy. As a result, they were more content with their care and reported positive experiences with wound healing since trial participation. Conclusions: The Ulcus Cruris Care intervention can lead to a noticeable change in knowledge and potentially influence practice teams’ approach to venous leg ulcer management, facilitating a significantly more frequent use of compression therapy in VLU care. A confirmatory evaluation of potential effects in a definitive RCT seems warranted. Full article

Although a lack of diversity in genetic studies is an acknowledged obstacle for personalized medicine and precision public health, Latin American populations remain particularly understudied despite their heterogeneity and mixed ancestry. This gap extends to COVID-19 despite its variability in susceptibility and clinical course, where ethnic background appears to influence disease severity, with non-Europeans facing higher hospitalization rates. In addition, access to high-quality samples and data is a critical issue for personalized and precision medicine, and it has become clear that the solution lies in biobanks. The creation of the Chilean COVID-19 Biorepository reported here addresses these gaps, representing the first nationwide multicentric Chilean initiative. It operates under rigorous biobanking standards and serves as one of South America’s largest COVID cohorts. A centralized harmonization strategy was chosen and included unified standard operating procedures, a sampling coding system, and biobanking staff training. Adults with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection provided broad informed consent. Samples were collected to preserve blood, plasma, buffy coat, and DNA. Quality controls included adherence to the standard preanalytical code, incident reporting, and DNA concentration and absorbance ratio 260/280 assessments. Detailed sociodemographic, health, medication, and preexisting condition data were gathered. In five months, 2262 participants were enrolled, pseudonymized, and sorted by disease severity. The average Amerindian ancestry considering all participant was 44.0% [SD 15.5%], and this value increased to 61.2% [SD 19.5%] among those who self-identified as Native South Americans. Notably, 279 participants self-identified with one of 12 ethnic groups. High compliance (>90%) in all assessed quality controls was achieved. Looking ahead, our team founded the COVID-19 Genomics Network (C19-GenoNet) focused on identifying genetic factors influencing SARS-CoV-2 outcomes. In conclusion, this bottom-up collaborative effort aims to promote the integration of Latin American populations into global genetic research and welcomes collaborations supporting this endeavor. Objective: Our aim was to report time-loss match injuries in Portugal’s “Divisão de Honra” (Portuguese first tier) in the 2022/2023 season, focusing on injury incidence, burden, anatomical region, and type, to assess their impact on athletes’ health and availability to play. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted monitoring injuries via an online form filled in by each team’s medical department, categorizing player position, as well as injury type, location, and severity. Incidence and burden were calculated per 1000 player-match-hours. Results: The overall injury incidence was 54.4 injuries per 1000 player-match-hours (95% CI 30.3–96.2). Forwards had higher injury incidence than backs. Lower limbs were the most affected locations—29 injuries/1000 h of exposure (95% CI 13.7–52.0). Sprain/ligaments injuries were the most common type of injury (14.4 injuries/1000 h (95% CI 3.7–30.0), followed by muscle injuries (8.1 injuries/1000 h 95% CI 4.9–11.5). Discussion: Injury incidence was higher than what is reported in amateur competitions and lower than for professionals. Injury severity was similar to that in other studies. Our study suggests a lower injury burden than in other semi-professional and elite leagues. These findings highlight the need for targeted injury prevention strategies in the Portuguese Rugby Union to increase athletes’ availability by decreasing injury incidence and/or burden. Further research with broader participation and training injury data is needed. Full article

Online medical teams (OMTs), a new mode of online healthcare service, have emerged in online health communities (OHCs) in China. This study attempts to explore the underlying mechanism of how OMTs’ engagement influences patient satisfaction through the lens of semantic features. This study also scrutinizes the moderating effect of multiple specializations on the link between OMTs’ engagement and semantic features. We utilized a linear model that had fixed effects controlled at the team level for analysis. A bootstrapping approach using 5000 samples was employed to test the mediation effects. The findings reveal that OMTs’ engagement significantly improves language concreteness in online team consultations, which subsequently enhances patient satisfaction. OMT engagement has a negative impact on emotional intensity, ultimately decreasing patient satisfaction. Multiple specializations strengthen the impact of OMT engagement on both language concreteness and emotional intensity. This study contributes to the literature on OMTs and patient satisfaction, providing insights into patients’ perceptions of OMTs’ engagement during online team consultation. This study also generates several implications for the practice of OHCs and OMTs. Full article

Background: Most people believe that student–athletes experience fewer difficulties related to mental health than non-sport participants. However, several studies have shown high depression levels or emotional difficulties in adolescent athletes. Most secondary school students have access to athletic trainers in their schools. Secondary school athletic trainers (SSATs) are medical professionals who can provide health care for student–athletes, and they could be appropriate supporters in providing mental health management in secondary schools. However, there are no studies that have addressed their preparedness and confidence level to manage potential risk factors and mental health disorders. This study aims to ascertain preparedness and confidence levels from SSATs’ perspectives in handling mental health disorders using a survey based on the mental health management guidelines and consensus statement. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study design. The research team created an online survey questionnaire based on the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Mental Health Guidelines for Secondary School and Interassociation Recommendation: A Consensus Statement. Utilizing the NATA Research Survey Service, the online survey was emailed to SSATs who self-categorized as secondary school athletic trainers in the NATA membership system. (n = 171, 65% completion rate). SPSS was used to analyze the survey data. Result: This study found that 29.2% of SSATs reported they have policies or guidelines regarding mental health disorders management for minors. The most frequent policy was mandatory reporting in cases in which an individual is being abused or neglected (80.5%). The highest confidence area was aligned with the most frequent policy. The least frequent policy was considering unique stressors and triggers with student–athletes to recognize the potential mechanisms that may cause a mental illness or exacerbate an existing mental illness (58.5%). Even though the least frequent policy was not aligned with the least confidence area, it was the second lowest confidence level. This study identified significant differences between two different employment structures: school-based employment and hospital-based employment structures. Policies were more common in school-based employment than in hospital-based employment structures. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the gap between organizational and individual preparation. The majority of SSATs respondents expressed moderate to high confidence in their ability to manage mental health disorders, despite the lack of mental health policies or procedures in their secondary schools. This study recommends that SSATs create guidelines or procedures in the areas where they are least confident and prepared to offer mental health management for minor student–athletes. They can use the interassociation recommendations and the NATA guidelines for mental health care to close the gap. Full article

We investigated the experiences of Brazilian gay men with HIV, focusing on the moment of diagnosis and its potential biopsychosocial impacts. This clinical–qualitative study involved 15 participants interviewed online and synchronously by a clinical psychologist in 2021. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data. Interpretations were grounded in Minority Stress Theory. Four thematic axes emerged, including “Diagnostic Revelation”, “Social and Internalized Stigma”, “Biopsychosocial Effects of Living with HIV”, and “Gratitude for Treatment Advances and the Brazilian Health System”. The diagnosis was often experienced as traumatic, exacerbated by the absence of empathy and emotional support from healthcare providers. Participants commonly reported guilt, fear upon learning of their HIV status, social isolation, loneliness, lack of social support, and damage to affective-sexual relationships. Many also noted a decline in mental health, even those without HIV-related medical complications. Despite over 40 years since the HIV epidemic began, the prevalence of homophobia and serophobia among gay men remains widespread, including within the multidisciplinary teams of specialized services. This indicates that the stigma associated with homosexuality and HIV persists, despite significant biomedical progress in the diagnosis and treatment of the infection, particularly in Brazil. Infographics have been recognised as effective visual tools for concise and accessible communication of data and information in various higher education disciplines, particularly in medical education. However, there is a lack of research on their impact on professional skills, difficulty levels, motivation, and overall satisfaction in health science students. Thus, the present study aimed to analyse the knowledge and usage of graphical resources among health science students and evaluate their competencies, the level of challenge they encountered, and their motivation and satisfaction after completing an infographic creation activity. The InfoHealth educational innovation project, conducted by five teachers from the Faculty of Medicine, served as the context for this study, with 143 students voluntarily participating. The intervention involved students working in groups of 2–3 and selecting their own topics for the infographics while receiving instruction, online guidance, and feedback from teachers. A questionnaire was administered to assess students’ perception of skill development and satisfaction with the activity. The findings revealed that schemes were the most recognized and used graphical summaries, compared to synoptic tables and Venn diagrams. The activity led to an increase in professional skills acquisition, motivation, and satisfaction, positively impacting students’ interest in evidence-based practice and reinforcing their knowledge. This study highlights the potential of infographics as a pedagogical tool for competency development and student engagement in health science education, suggesting the need for further research comparing infographics with traditional study methods and involving multidisciplinary teams to promote essential skills for future clinical practice. Background: Training in communication skills between nursing and medical students during interprofessional paediatric emergency simulation training represents a significant aspect of safe patient care. Evidence highlights that poor communication in paediatric emergency scenarios jeopardises patient safety. Through realistic simulations, students practice the communication strategies of crisis resource management (CRM), such as “closed-loop communication”, “speaking up”, and “team time-out”. Aims: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of interprofessional simulation on enhancing teamwork and communication skills. Additionally, we sought to assess the occurrence of contexts for the three CRM communication strategies during simulations. Methods: Employing a mixed methods research design, the analysed students completed pre- and post-simulation online questionnaires. To measure attitudes towards interprofessional collaboration, we used the German version of the University of West England Interprofessional Questionnaire (UWE-IP_german), and to measure interprofessional attitudes, we used the Greifswald Questionnaire for the Measurement of Interprofessional Attitudes (Greif Mie), also in German, for both pre- and post-simulation. For qualitative video analysis, we utilised Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM). Results: Following simulation training, we observed a significant improvement (p > 0.001) in the subscale “attitude towards interprofessional learning” of the UWE-IP_german among nursing and medical students. Medical students consistently exhibited a significantly (p < 0.001) more positive attitude towards other professionals in both the pre- and post-simulation assessments. Overall, all the students expressed satisfaction with the interprofessional simulation training. In the qualitative selective coding process, the central phenomenon “participation” could be identified in the coding paradigm. Conclusion: This study presents substantial evidence of the learning impact of interprofessional paediatric simulation training on nursing and medical students. Full article

This study investigated the effects of an online interprofessional education (IPE) program on nursing students at a university in Japan. It conducted a comparative analysis between traditional face-to-face and online interventions. All students who enrolled in the “Team Medical Practice” course in both 2019 and 2020 were invited to participate. After team-based learning with different healthcare professions, we quantitatively analyzed pre- and post-intervention outcomes using two measures: the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) and the IPE Questionnaire TSUKUBA model (IPET). We compared the results of 153 nursing students. The RIPLS results demonstrate significant pre- and post-intervention score differences in the teamwork and collaboration subscale for the online group only. The post-IPE score analysis revealed that scores were significantly higher in the online group in all subscales: Teamwork and collaboration, Opportunities for IPE, and Uniqueness of profession. Based on the IPET results, there were no significant differences in pre- and post-intervention scores. However, the online group showed a significant increase in post-intervention scores in participation in group work, thoughts about the team in health and welfare, and thoughts about interprofessional collaboration. These findings indicate that the online IPE program improved nursing students’ readiness for interprofessional learning, demonstrating practical efficacy. Full article
