This study aims to understand the meaning nursing professionals attribute to their lived experiences of providing humanized care within a public hospital setting. Grounded in Jean Watson’s theory of human caring, the research adopts a qualitative, descriptive phenomenological design to capture the perceptions and emotions of nurses regarding humanized care. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with nine experienced nurses, selected through purposive sampling. The interviews, conducted virtually between July and December 2024, were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method and supported by Atlas.ti software. Four main thematic categories emerged: institutional health policies, professional image and identity, strengths and challenges in care, and essential competencies for humanized care. The findings highlight the critical role of empathy, cultural sensitivity, ethical commitment, and emotional presence in delivering compassionate care. Participants emphasized that, beyond clinical procedures, humanized care requires relational and contextual sensitivity, often hindered by institutional limitations and excessive administrative burdens. The study concludes that nursing professionals are key agents in promoting ethical, empathetic, and culturally respectful practices that humanize health services. These insights offer valuable contributions for designing policies and training strategies aimed at strengthening humanized care as a cornerstone of quality healthcare systems. Full article

Background: Workplace mobbing is a widespread phenomenon with serious psychological and emotional consequences on employees’ emotional well-being. Psychological resilience has been identified as a potential protective factor against such adverse outcomes. Aim: This study investigates the relationship between workplace mobbing and emotional well-being, as expressed through positive and negative affect, and examines the mediating role of psychological resilience in this association. Methods: Ninety nurses participated in this cross-sectional study. Data were collected using the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Workplace Psychologically Violent Behaviors (WPVB) scale, and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Statistical analyses included correlation, multiple regression, and mediation using bootstrapped confidence intervals. Results: Resilience was strongly associated with positive affect (r = 0.74, p < 0.001) and inversely with negative affect (r = −0.46, p < 0.001). Mobbing was significantly related to increased negative affect (β = 0.12, p < 0.001) but not to positive affect. Resilience emerged as the strongest predictor of emotional outcomes and partially mediated the relationship between “Attack on professional role” and negative affect. Conclusions: Psychological resilience plays a key protective role in moderating the emotional impact of workplace mobbing. Enhancing resilience in healthcare professionals may mitigate the negative emotional effects of mobbing, although it does not fully buffer against all its consequences. Full article

Background/Objectives: Senior nurses in Taiwan shoulder layered responsibilities shaped by professional roles, gendered expectations, and family duty. Although Taiwan faces a persistent shortage of experienced clinical nurses, limited research has explored how long-serving nurses sustain identity and commitment across decades of caregiving. This study examines how senior staff nurses understand their journeys of becoming—and remaining—nurses within a culturally and emotionally complex landscape. Methods: Interviews were conducted between May 2019 and September 2023 in locations chosen by participants, with most sessions face-to-face and others undertaken via video conferencing during COVID-19. This narrative inquiry involved in-depth, multi-session interviews with five female senior staff nurses born in the 1970s to early 1980s. Each participant reflected on her life and career, supported by co-constructed “nursing life lines.” Thematic narrative analysis was conducted using McCormack’s five-lens framework and Riessman’s model, with ethical rigor ensured through reflexive journaling and participant validation. Results: Three overarching themes emerged: (1) inner strength and endurance, highlighting silent resilience and the ethical weight of caregiving; (2) support and responsibility in relationships, revealing the influence of family, faith, and relational duty; and (3) role navigation and professional identity, showing how nurses revisit meaning, self-understanding, and tensions across time. Participants described emotionally powerful moments, identity re-connection, and cultural values that shaped their paths. Conclusions: These narratives offer a relational and culturally embedded understanding of what it means to sustain a career in nursing. Narrative inquiry created space for reflection, meaning-making, and voice in a system where such voices are often unheard. Identity was not static—it was lived, reshaped, and held in story. Background and Objectives: Specialized nurses play an essential role in managing pulmonary fibrosis. While tele-nursing has the potential to optimize disease management, current evidence regarding its impact remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate a tele-nursing intervention that provided unscheduled access to a specialized nurse via phone or email for both patients and caregivers. Materials and Methods: This was a prospective, single-center, open-label, and pre–post pilot study. Participants and their caregivers were provided with direct access to a specialized nurse, by phone and email, for unscheduled consultations. Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) were collected at baseline and after three months of tele-nursing access. PREMs were assessed using a 10-point Likert scale questionnaire, and PROMs were evaluated using the King’s Brief Interstitial Lung Disease (K-BILD) and the Living with Pulmonary Fibrosis (L-PF) questionnaires. Results: A total of 47 patients with pulmonary fibrosis receiving antifibrotic drugs were enrolled. At three months, 44 patients and 34 caregivers completed the questionnaires. Four patients did not complete the study due to death, lung transplantation, or transition to end-of-life care. No significant changes were observed in PROMs. However, PREMs showed significant improvements, with most scores exceeding 9/10. Patient satisfaction increased by 28% (p < 0.001), and caregiver satisfaction by 30% (p < 0.001). Caregivers of patients who did not complete the study also reported high satisfaction, comparable to that of other caregivers. Conclusions: A pragmatic and affordable tele-nursing program, based on direct phone and email consultations, may enhance patient and caregiver satisfaction in the management of pulmonary fibrosis. Background/Objectives: Emotional intelligence has emerged as a key factor in shaping nursing performance and care quality, yet its specific mechanisms and impact within the Greek public healthcare context remain underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the role of emotional intelligence in ethical behavior, crisis management, and the perceived quality of care among nurses working in Greek public hospitals. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among practicing nurses using validated instruments to assess emotional intelligence, ethical compliance, crisis management skills, and care quality. Data were analyzed using covariance-based structural equation modeling (CB SEM) to examine both direct and indirect relationships among variables. Results: The results indicated that emotional intelligence training had a strong and significant effect on nurses’ ethical behavior and their ability to manage critical situations. However, the direct effect of emotional intelligence on the perceived quality of care was not significant; instead, its influence was mediated through improvements in ethics and crisis management. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the benefits of emotional intelligence in nursing are most evident when integrated with supportive organizational practices and ongoing professional development. Overall, this study highlights the need for comprehensive emotional intelligence training and a supportive workplace culture to enhance ethical standards, resilience, and patient care quality in Greek healthcare settings. Prolonged Overtime Predicts Worsening Burnout Among Healthcare Workers: A 4-Year Longitudinal Study in Taiwan

Background: Overtime adversely affects physical and mental health, contributing to irritability, anxiety, reduced sleep, and even cardiovascular issues, ultimately lowering care quality and increasing turnover intentions. This study aimed to investigate whether prolonged overtime increases the risk of occupational burnout over time among healthcare workers. Methods: We conducted a four-year longitudinal observational study using secondary data from annual surveys (2021–2024) of healthcare workers at a medical university hospital in Taichung, Taiwan. Burnout was assessed using the personal burnout (PB) scale from the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), with high PB levels (HPBL) defined as scores in the upper quartile of the 2021 baseline. Survival analysis utilizing the Kaplan–Meier method and Cox regression investigated burnout progression and the effects of overtime. Results: HPBL was defined as PB scores ≥45.83 (upper quartile in 2021). The proportions of HPBL were 30.28% (2021), 33.29% (2022), 36.75% (2023), and 32.51% (2024). Survival analysis confirmed that the risk of burnout increased over time, with the survival time estimated at 2.50 ± 0.03 years and lower survival probabilities observed among participants working overtime (Log-rank test, p < 0.0001). Multivariate logistics revealed overtime work, female gender, being a physician/nurse, and reduced sleep as independent risk factors for HPBL (OR = 3.14 for overtime, p < 0.001). These findings support the hypotheses on burnout progression and the impact of overtime. Conclusions: Overtime significantly heightens the risk of burnout, which worsens over time. Female sex, healthcare roles, obesity, and insufficient sleep are additional risk factors. Limiting overtime and proactive interventions are crucial to preventing burnout in healthcare workers. Background/Objectives: Effective teamwork is crucial for minimizing human error in healthcare settings. Medical teams, typically composed of physicians and nurses, supported by auxiliary professionals, achieve better outcomes when they possess strong collaborative competencies. High-quality teamwork is associated with fewer adverse events and complications and lower mortality rates. Based on this background, the objective of this study is to analyze the perception of non-technical skills and immediate learning outcomes in interprofessional simulation settings based on E-CRM items. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted involving participants from the official postgraduate Medicine and Nursing programs at the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) during the 2024–2025 academic year. Four interprofessional E-CRM simulation sessions were planned, involving randomly assigned groups with proportional representation of medical and nursing students. Teams worked consistently throughout the training and participated in clinical scenarios observed via video transmission by their peers. Post-scenario debriefings followed INACSL guidelines and employed the PEARLS method. Results: Findings indicate that 48.3% of participants had no difficulty identifying the team leader, while 51.7% reported minor difficulty. Role assignment posed moderate-to-high difficulty for 24.1% of respondents. Communication, situation awareness, and early help-seeking were generally managed with ease, though mobilizing resources remained a challenge for 27.5% of participants. Conclusions: This study supports the value of interprofessional education in developing essential competencies for handling urgent, emergency, and high-complexity clinical situations. Strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration contributes to safer, more effective patient care. Full article

Background: Emotional safety is increasingly recognized as crucial for high-quality patient care, encompassing a patient’s sense of security, courteous treatment, being heard, and a peaceful environment. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of patients and providers (doctors and nurses) regarding emotional harm and safety in relation to hospitalized patients. Methods: We conducted a qualitative study in public-sector teaching hospitals in Peshawar, Pakistan. Data were collected after we obtained informed consent using individual interviews with 15 providers, namely, doctors (n = 7) and nurses (n = 8), and five focus group discussions (FGDs) with 25 hospitalized patients. Data from both the interviews and FGDs were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase approach to thematic analysis. Results: The key themes revealed by the providers’ perspectives were factors contributing to emotional harm, staff-related factors, coping mechanisms and solutions, and the impact of prior experiences and involvement. The main themes that emerged from the patients’ perspectives were anxiety upon admission, the impact of communication, emotional stress due to treatment delays, systemic/bureaucratic challenges, financial burden, a lack of emotional support, and post-hospitalization concerns. The consistent perspectives shared by both patients and providers included the impact of systemic factors, communication issues, the role of staff attitude/behavior, financial concerns, and the influence of prior experiences. Conclusions: This study highlights the complex interplay of systemic, staff-related, and patient-specific factors. It suggests a need to improve communication, staff support, administrative processes, financial counseling, emotional support integration, and discharge planning to minimize harm and create a patient-centered environment. Aim: To explore the experiences, beliefs, and values of patients who participated in a two-arm randomized clinical trial assessing a nurse-led intervention program for chronic pain self-management, which demonstrated positive effects on pain reduction, depression, and anxiety, and on health-related quality of life 24 months after completion of the program. Design: Descriptive phenomenological qualitative study. Methods: Patients were recruited via telephone, informed about the study, and invited to participate in an individual interview at a place of their choice (hospital or home). All interviews were audiotaped, and an inductive thematic analysis was performed. Results: Seven interviews were carried out between both groups. Six emerging categories were found: effective relationship with the healthcare system, learning to live with pain, family and social support, behaviors regarding pain, resources for self-management, and concomitant determinants. Conclusions: Patients report key aspects that help us to understand the impact of this type of nurse-led group intervention: the intrinsic therapeutic effect of participating in the program itself, the ability to learn to live with pain, the importance of family and social support, the modification of pain-related behaviors, and the identification of resources for self-care. The findings highlight the need for gender-sensitive, individualized care approaches to chronic pain, addressing stigma and social context. Expanding community-based programs and supporting caregivers is essential, as is further research into gender roles, family dynamics, and work-related factors. Full article

In recent studies, public health has been considered a key stakeholder in climate mitigation and adaptation in cities since they are more exposed to the impact of climate change. Nurses represent a vast majority of public health professionals, playing a key role in health promotion that allows them to influence individuals, families, and communities in adopting healthier behaviours and decarbonized lifestyles. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to map the existing evidence on nursing interventions, which are being led or implemented to reduce the health risks related to climate change in urban areas. The present review follows the JBI methodological framework, including a search on PubMed, MEDLINE complete, CINAHL Complete, Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine), and RCAAP. Hand searched references were also considered, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies between January 2014 and October 2024, for a more contemporary perspective. A three-step search strategy and data extraction tool were used by two independent reviewers. Twenty-seven studies in English and Portuguese were eligible for inclusion, all targeting a population of professionals with nursing-related roles: two case studies, one Delphi panel, one descriptive study, one historical research paper, two using a methodological design format, four narrative reviews, one observational study, nine review articles, three scoping reviews, and three systematic reviews. Eight categories of nursing interventions that contribute to decarbonized lifestyles, reducing health risks in relation to climate change, were acknowledged. Nurses play a key role in empowering individuals, families, and communities, promoting climate awareness and literacy, supporting health policy change, advocating for the most vulnerable and engaging in environmental activism, using evidence-based research, and taking advantage of marketing strategies and social media. Background/Objectives: Clinical Research Nurses (CRNs) have emerged as pivotal actors in the conduct, coordination, and oversight of clinical trials globally. Over the past three decades, the role of the CRN has evolved in response to the increasing complexity of research protocols, ethical standards, and regulatory frameworks. Originating as task-oriented support figures, CRNs have progressively assumed broader responsibilities that include patient advocacy, protocol integrity, ethical vigilance, and interprofessional coordination. By mapping the global literature on CRNs, this review will examine how their role has been defined, implemented, and evaluated over the past three decades. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The search covered the peer-reviewed and gray literature from 1990 to 2024 across major databases. Data analysis combined traditional extraction with topic modeling, Multiple Correspondence Analysis, and k-means clustering to identify key themes. Results: From the 128 included studies, four major themes emerged: clinical trial management, role perception and team integration, professional competencies and development, and systemic barriers. Despite formal competency frameworks, CRNs face inconsistencies in role recognition, unstable contracts, and limited career pathways. Emotional strain and professional isolation are recurrent. Over time, their functions have evolved from task execution to broader responsibilities, including advocacy and ethical oversight. However, no studies reported patient-level outcomes, revealing a critical gap in the evidence base. Conclusions: CRNs play a vital but undervalued role in clinical research. Persistent structural challenges hinder their development and visibility. Enhancing institutional support and generating outcome-based evidence are necessary steps toward fully integrating CRNs into research infrastructures. Full article

The Impact of Intraoperative Traffic and Door Openings on Surgical Site Infections: An Umbrella Review

Background: Surgical site infections (SSIs) are among the most common postoperative complications. Environmental factors, including intraoperative traffic and door openings in the operating room (OR), have been identified as critical contributors to microbial air contamination. Nurses play a pivotal role in managing these factors, directly influencing infection control practices. Methods: An integrative review was conducted to synthesize current evidence on the association between intraoperative traffic, door openings, and SSIs. A structured methodology was employed to identify, assess, and analyze the existing literature, with a specific focus on the nursing role in infection prevention. Results: Findings from a single-center prospective cohort study indicate that ORs with more than 10 personnel present exhibit a threefold increase in SSI risk [Relative Risk (RR) = 3.12; 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.71–13.66] compared to ORs with fewer personnel. Additionally, every five door openings per procedure were associated with a significant increase in SSI incidence [Hazard Ratio (HR) = 2.00; 95% CI: 1.24–3.20, p = 0.005]. Conclusions: These findings underscore the importance of strict protocols to limit intraoperative traffic and unnecessary OR access. A multidisciplinary approach plays a crucial role in ensuring surgical safety and preventing SSIs by regulating OR access and adhering to infection control best practices. Full article

Exploring Staff Perspectives on Implementing an Intervention Package for Post-Stroke Psychological Support: A Qualitative Study

Background: Psychological problems post-stroke can negatively impact stroke survivors. Although general psychological services exist (e.g., NHS Talking Therapies), access remains limited, particularly for individuals with post-stroke communication and cognitive impairments. Stroke service staff report low confidence in managing psychological distress. This study is the first to explore the barriers and facilitators to implementing a novel intervention package comprising a cross-service care pathway and staff training to enhance post-stroke psychological provision. Methods: Staff from stroke and mental health services in four UK regions, recruited through purposive sampling to ensure diversity of services and professional roles, participated in semi-structured interviews or focus groups, guided by the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), before and after implementation of the intervention package. Pre-implementation interviews/groups identified anticipated barriers and facilitators to implementation and training needs, informing the development of site-specific intervention packages; post-implementation interviews/groups explored experienced barriers, facilitators and perceptions of the intervention. Interviews underwent thematic analysis using the TDF. Results: Fifty-five staff participated pre-implementation and seventeen post-implementation, representing stroke (e.g., nurse, physiotherapist, consultant) and psychology (e.g., counsellor, psychological therapist) roles across acute, rehabilitation, community, and voluntary services. Challenges anticipated pre-implementation included: limited specialist post-stroke psychological support; low staff confidence; and fragmented service pathways. Post-implementation findings indicated increased staff knowledge and confidence, enhanced screening and referral processes, and stronger inter-service collaboration. Implementation success varied across sites (with some sites showing greater ownership and sustainability of the intervention) and across staff roles (with therapy staff more likely than nursing staff to have received training). Conclusions: Effective implementation of an intervention package to increase psychological provision post-stroke requires staff engagement at all levels across all services. Staff investment influenced ownership of the intervention package, beliefs about priorities and overall enhancement of service capability. Full article

To clarify the current status of physical assessment education in Japan, this study analyzed publicly available syllabi from nursing universities. Syllabi from 299 member universities of the Japan Association of Nursing Universities were analyzed, and data on course classification methods, learning content, and practice methods were tabulated. The Body System Approach was the most common classification (used by 244 universities). Implementation rates were high for core systems like the respiratory system (98.0%) and cardiovascular system (95.2%), but lower for others, such as the otolaryngology system (41.5%). The use of simulation was noted in 21.4% of courses, and in 71.0% of syllabi, the role of the patient in practice exercises was not described. A discrepancy exists between the implemented content and the Model Core Curriculum for Nursing Education, which includes a wider range of systems. Furthermore, few syllabi described specific teaching methods, indicating that future curriculum revisions will require re-evaluation to ensure educational quality. Full article

Background: Family involvement in promoting patient safety is a strategy that is increasingly recognized. Nurses have a major role to play here. This study aims to know the family care process developed by nurses and explore the logistic process identified as support for the development of family care in ensuring patient safety in the hospital. Methods: An interpretative qualitative study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 10 nurses selected by convenience. Content analysis was performed using Atlas.ti 9.1.7 software and Bardin’s methodology. Results: Two large families were identified according to the nature of the strategies mentioned by the participant/s: assistance process and logistic process, 5 categories and 23 subcategories. Care process categories: initial assessment, planning, and implementation. Categories of the logistic process: material and human resources and organization. Conclusions: To implement patient and family-centered care to ensure patient safety, it is necessary to adjust the care and logistic process. At the care level, the importance of the nursing process in the organization of care is evident. At the logistical level, organizational initiatives are needed to stimulate and support this philosophy of care and to intervene at the level of human and material resources. Full article
