With the rapid development of technologies such as cloud computing, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT), Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is emerging as a new network architecture for the modern Internet. SDN separates the control plane from the data plane, allowing a central controller, the SDN controller, to quickly direct the routing devices within the topology to forward data packets, thus providing flexible traffic management for communication between information sources. However, traditional Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks still significantly impact SDN systems. This paper proposes a novel dual-layer strategy capable of detecting and mitigating DDoS attacks in an SDN network environment. The first layer of the strategy enhances security by using blockchain technology to replace the SDN flow table storage container in the northbound interface of the SDN controller. Smart contracts are then used to process the stored flow table information. We employ the time window algorithm and the token bucket algorithm to construct the first layer strategy to defend against obvious DDoS attacks. To detect and mitigate less obvious DDoS attacks, we design a second-layer strategy that uses a composite data feature correlation coefficient calculation method and the Isolation Forest algorithm from unsupervised learning techniques to perform binary classification, thereby identifying abnormal traffic. We conduct experimental validation using the publicly available DDoS dataset CIC-DDoS2019. The results show that using this strategy in the SDN network reduces the average deviation of round-trip time (RTT) by approximately 38.86% compared with the original SDN network without this strategy. Furthermore, the accuracy of DDoS attack detection reaches 97.66% and an F1 score of 92.2%. Compared with other similar methods, under comparable detection accuracy, the deployment of our strategy in small-scale SDN network topologies provides faster detection speeds for DDoS attacks and exhibits less fluctuation in detection time. This indicates that implementing this strategy can effectively identify DDoS attacks without affecting the stability of data transmission in the SDN network environment. Full article

Software-defined networking (SDN) has emerged as a flexible and programmable network architecture that takes advantage of the benefits of global visibility and centralized control over a network. One of the main properties of the SDN architecture is the ability to offer a northbound interface (NBI), which enables network applications to access the SDN controller resources. However, the NBI can be compromised by a malicious application due to the lack of standardization and security aspects in the most current NBI designs. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel comprehensive security solution for securing the application–controller interface, named BCNBI. We propose a controller-independent lightweight blockchain architecture and exploit the security features of blockchain while limiting the blockchain’s computational overhead. BCNBI automatically verifies application and SDN controller credentials through token-based authentication. The proposed solution enforces fine-grained access control for each application’s API request and classifies the permission set into strict and normal policies, in order to add an extra level of security. In addition, the trustworthiness of applications is evaluated in order to prevent malicious activities. We implemented our blockchain-based solution to analyze its security, based on the confidentiality–integrity–availability model criteria, and evaluated the introduced overhead in terms of processing time and packet overhead. The experimental results demonstrate that the BCNBI can effectively secure the NBI, based on the fundamental security goals, while introducing insignificant overhead. Full article

Software-Defined Network (SDN), which is recommended as a new generation of the network, a substitute for TCP/IP network, has the characteristics of separation of data plane and control plane. Although the separation of the control plane brings a high degree of freedom and simple operation and maintenance, it also increases the cost of north–south communication. There are many additional modules for SDN to modify and enhance the basic functions of SDN. This paper proposes a message queue-based northbound communication mechanism, which pre-categorizes messages from the data plane and accurately pushes them to the apps potentially interested. This mechanism improves the efficiency of northbound communication and apps’ execution. Furthermore, it supports both OpenFlow and the protocol-independent southbound interface, and it has strong compatibility. Experiments have proved that this mechanism can reduce the control-response latency by up to 41% when compared with the normal controller northbound communication system, and it also improves the network situation of the data plane, such as real-time bandwidth.
