This study investigates how Iyengar yoga postures influence autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity by analyzing multimodal physiological signals collected via wearable sensors. The goal was to explore whether subtle postural variations elicit measurable autonomic responses and to identify which sensor features most effectively capture these changes. Participants performed a sequence of yoga poses while wearing synchronized sensors measuring electrodermal activity (EDA), heart rate variability, skin temperature, and motion. Interpretable machine learning models, including linear classifiers, were trained to distinguish physiological states and rank feature relevance. The results revealed that even minor postural adjustments led to significant shifts in ANS markers, with phasic EDA and RR interval features showing heightened sensitivity. Surprisingly, micro-movements captured via accelerometry and transient electrodermal reactivity, specifically EDA peak-to-RMS ratios, emerged as dominant contributors to classification performance. These findings suggest that small-scale kinematic and autonomic shifts, which are often overlooked, play a central role in the physiological effects of yoga. The study demonstrates that wearable sensor analytics can decode a more nuanced and granular physiological profile of mind–body practices than traditionally appreciated, offering a foundation for precision-tailored biofeedback systems and advancing objective approaches to yoga-based interventions. Background/Objectives: Mindfulness has expanded from seated meditation to include embodied practices emphasizing somatic awareness and emotional regulation. Dance offers a creative, accessible pathway to mindfulness, especially in non-clinical settings where movement-based approaches may better support self-regulation, interoception, and well-being. This scoping review investigated empirical studies on dance-based mindfulness interventions targeting non-clinical, amateur and recreational populations. Methods: Six databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, ERIC, Web of Science, and Google Scholar) were searched for peer-reviewed studies published between 2010 and 2025. Eligible studies combined dance with mindfulness and somatic movement practices and were conducted with non-professional participants of all ages in non-clinical settings. Study selection, data extraction, and appraisal followed PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Results: Ten empirical studies met the inclusion criteria, spanning diverse populations from primary school children to older adults. Interventions included Dance/Movement Therapy, ballet with yoga, Sufi-inspired group dance, and school- or community-based mindful movement programs. Reported outcomes included improvements in body awareness, emotional regulation, stress reduction, self-compassion, social connection, and overall well-being. A thematic synthesis identified five domains: (1) psychological and emotional outcomes, (2) embodiment and self-compassion, (3) relational and social benefits, (4) feasibility and acceptability, and (5) sustained and preventive effects. Conclusions: Dance-based mindfulness interventions in recreational contexts show promising psychosomatic and emotional benefits. Although the current empirical base is limited and methodologically diverse, this scoping review provides a necessary foundation for understanding this emerging field. There remains a strong need for interventions that are theoretically grounded, culturally sensitive, and pedagogically integrated, particularly within classroom-based dance educational contexts. This paper discusses the role of energy and movement in facilitating experiences of well-being from an anthropological perspective that considers energy as a situated form of knowledge. Drawing on fieldwork among Core Energetics (CE) and 5Rhythms (5R) groups, I examine how the circulation of energy is achieved through bodily movements and dances, attention to the senses, somatic self-cultivation, and deep experiences of consciousness. Focus is hold on the ritual elements, including a specific spacetime framework and intersubjective exercises that facilitate energetical experiences that renew the subjective and intersubjective relationship to the self in a restorative way. I argue that mind–body–energy groups conflate two Western sources: on the one hand, the legacy of early Western medical offshoots that have been marginalized by mainstream biomedicine, and on the other, discursive references to contemporary interpretations of quantum physics. The Effectiveness and Safety of Tai Chi on Knee Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background/Objectives: Although Tai Chi has shown potential benefits for managing chronic pain, its clinical effectiveness specifically for knee pain remains inconclusive. Methods: We systematically searched ten electronic databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of Tai Chi on knee pain. Results: This systematic review and meta-analysis included 11 RCTs involving 706 participants; among them, three studies (n = 169) were eligible for meta-analysis. A comprehensive search of ten electronic databases was conducted up to March 2025. The included RCTs were conducted in the United States (n = 5), China (n = 3), South Korea (n = 2), and Turkey (n = 1). Compared to health education, Tai Chi significantly improved knee pain, as measured using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) pain score (mean difference (MD) = −0.60; 95% CI: −6.52 to −3.28; p < 0.00001) and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) (MD = −1.44; 95% CI: −1.95 to −0.93; p < 0.00001). Tai Chi also significantly improved knee function compared to health education (WOMAC function score—MD = −13.49; 95% CI: −17.11 to −9.87; p < 0.00001). Four RCTs comparing Tai Chi with no intervention reported favorable effects on knee pain and function; however, a meta-analysis was not possible due to limited data. In contrast, two studies comparing Tai Chi with active controls, such as physical therapy and resistance training, found no significant differences in pain or functional outcomes. Two studies reported increased knee pain during initial Tai Chi sessions, but no adverse events occurred after postural corrections. Conclusions: While Tai Chi appears promising for knee pain management, further large-scale, high-quality RCTs with rigorous methodology are needed to establish definitive evidence. Full article

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the most well-known neurodegenerative diseases. Axial symptoms of PD include tremors in the arms and legs, stiffness of the muscles in the limbs and trunk, slow movement, impaired coordination, and balance disorders. Progressive disability increases the risk of falls and leads to immobilization of the patient. Comprehensive rehabilitation plays a very important role in the treatment process and serves mainly to improve motor functions and balance. In recent years, traditional methods of rehabilitation have been enriched by sometimes unconventional modern methods, which are attractive to patients. Unfortunately, current scientific evidence for the effectiveness of these methods is insufficient. Unconventional methods being used increasingly often in the rehabilitation of patients with PD include mind–body interventions. One of these interventions is Pilates exercise, which works on a physical and mental level. In this narrative review, we present the state of the art on the effects of Pilates exercise on balance and motor functions in PD. Previous studies, the results of which are available in scientific reports, have not provided convincing evidence for the effectiveness of these methods. Between 2019 and 2024, four systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the use of Pilates in the rehabilitation of patients with PD were published. Most of the reports show many shortcomings: too small groups of patients; frequent methodological errors, such as a lack of randomization and insufficient inclusion and exclusion criteria; imprecise descriptions of the interventions; different intensities and frequencies of exercises; too different outcome measures; and poorly chosen methods of statistical evaluation. Therefore, many authors emphasize the need for further, better-planned research. Full article

Background: Musculoskeletal conditions with multisystem comorbidities present significant challenges in terms of prevention and rehabilitation. Despite advances in instrumental technologies for diagnosis and treatment, a gap remains between biomedical research and practical application. Strengthening the therapeutic alliance involves improving patients’ understanding of diagnostics and treatment, while emphasizing face-to-face interactions. A team of healthcare professionals, promoting an integrated approach combining manual and movement therapies—such as physiotherapy, chiropractic, and osteopathic care—can bridge this gap, promoting well-being through a person-centered framework. Emerging research highlights the role of cognitive, neurophysiological, and sociocultural factors in body perception and health, emphasizing the need for inclusive, culturally sensitive care within osteopathic practice. Methods: We synthesize the available evidence and expert insights to address gaps in the literature. Our approach integrates conceptual analysis with emerging research, applying Driscoll’s reflective model to generate a practical framework rooted in osteopathic principles and clinical experiences. Results: We propose an integrative model incorporating narrative-based sense-making, shared decision-making, mindfulness, and active participation. By blending historical osteopathic principles with modern evidence, the model aims to enhance health resilience, reduce unnecessary interventions, and establish a holistic framework for prevention and rehabilitation. Conclusions: Integrating diverse approaches within osteopathic care refines clinical practices, ensuring a more person-centered, culturally sensitive, and holistic approach to musculoskeletal rehabilitation. This model bridges the gap between tradition and modern evidence, enhancing therapeutic outcomes and fostering an inclusive healthcare system. Full article

It is increasingly recognized that interoceptive ability, the capacity to detect, interpret, and consciously integrate signals related to the physiological condition of the body, is central to emotion experience and regulation. Interoceptive ability can be trained and improved through mind–body interventions. This article attempts to provide an integrative review of the link between interoceptive ability and emotion regulation in mind–body interventions. To this aim, (1) we address the constructs of interoceptive ability and mind–body interventions in relation to the double pathway of emotion regulation, and (2) we include a review of selected empirical and qualitative studies. These show that mindfulness meditation affects the brain–body axis through top-down processing, improving both interoceptive ability and emotion regulation. Interventions based on bottom-up processing through body movement and emotional expression are illustrated, but it is argued that they are still under-investigated. In light of the literature reviewed, we contend that interoceptive ability is a crucial aspect associated with the effects of mind–body interventions on emotion regulation. Additionally, we suggest that if studied through both quantitative and qualitative methods, interoceptive ability may serve as a general construct that allows a more integrated view of the polarities related to the spectrum of embodied experience: top-down and bottom-up emotion processing, observational and non-observational body awareness, conscious and unconscious level of interoception. Periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) are a prevalent disorder characterized by rhythmic, involuntary movements of the lower limbs, such as dorsiflexion of the ankle and extension of the big toe, occurring in periodic intervals during sleep. These movements are often linked to disrupted autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and altered interoception. Interoception involves perceiving internal bodily states, like heartbeat, breathing, hunger, and temperature, and plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis and the mind–body connection. This review explores the complex relationships between PLMS, heart rate variability (HRV), ANS dysregulation, and their impact on psychiatric disorders. By synthesizing the existing literature, it provides insights into how ANS dysregulation and altered interoceptive processes, alongside PLMS, contribute to psychiatric conditions. The review highlights the potential for integrated diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and presents a cause-and-effect model illustrating the mutual influence of psychiatric disorders, ANS dysregulation, PLMS, and interoception. Background/Objectives: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and post-COVID syndrome (PCS) pose a substantial socioeconomic burden. The aim of this systematic review was to assess current evidence regarding the effect of the most popular forms of movement-based mindful exercises, i.e., qigong, tai chi, and yoga, on fatigue and associated symptoms in CFS and PCS. Methods: CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to October 2023. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) where qigong, tai chi, or yoga were compared with waitlist, no intervention, or active controls were included. Independent reviewers participated in data extraction, and evaluated risk of bias, spin of information, completeness of intervention description, and certainty of the evidence (GRADE). Meta-analyses were conducted. The primary outcome was the level of fatigue. Secondary measures were the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms and sleep quality. Results were expressed as mean difference (MD) or standardized mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Thirteen RCTs with 661 participants were included, with most studies presenting a moderate or high risk of bias. Mindful exercises were more effective than control interventions to alleviate fatigue: SMD (95%CI) = −0.44 (−0.63 to −0.25), I2 = 48%, p < 0.0001. Positive effects were also observed for secondary outcomes. The certainty of the evidence was low or very low. Conclusions: Qigong, tai chi, and yoga may be effective to reduce fatigue and improve anxiety, depression, and sleep quality in adults with CFS or PCS. However, serious methodological concerns limit the clinical applicability of these findings. Full article

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a complex pathophysiology characterized by intense pruritus, often associated with psychological stress and atopic and non-atopic comorbidities that significantly reduce quality of life. The psychological aspects of AD and the interaction between the mind and body via the skin–brain axis have led to an interest in mind–body therapies (MBT). The aim of this article is, therefore, to reinforce the importance of psychodermatological care in AD. We performed a focused literature review on holistic practices or integrative MBT in AD, including education, cognitive behavioral therapy, habit reversal, meditation, mindfulness, hypnotherapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, biofeedback, progressive muscle relaxation, autonomous sensory meridian response, music therapy, massage, and touch therapy. A multidisciplinary holistic approach with MBT, in addition to conventional pharmacologic antipruritic therapies, to break the itch–scratch cycle may improve AD outcomes and psychological well-being. Although there is a paucity of rigorously designed trials, evidence shows the potential benefits of an integrative approach on pruritus, pain, psychological stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and sleep quality. Relaxation and various behavioral interventions, such as habit reversal therapy for replacing harmful scratching with massaging with emollient ‘plus’, may reduce the urge to scratch, while education may improve adherence to conventional therapies. Background/Objectives: Chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP) is a prevalent condition causing significant distress and healthcare costs globally. Despite various treatments, effective management remains challenging. Pilates, recognized for its focus on core strength and postural alignment, has emerged as a promising intervention. This study investigates the impact of mind–body in Pilates for directing participants on CNSLBP outcomes. Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 67 participants, aged 18 to 65 years, suffering from CNSLBP. They were allocated into two groups: Pilates with mind–body cueing (n = 34) and Pilates without cueing (n = 33). Both groups underwent 60 min sessions twice weekly for 8 weeks. Outcome measures included pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale), functional disability (Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire), fear of movement (Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia), and adherence (percentage of sessions attended). Statistical significance was determined through repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Both groups showed significant improvement in pain reduction, functional ability, and kinesiophobia. However, the mind–body group demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in kinesiophobia compared to the non-cueing group (p = 0.048), indicating the potential additional benefit of mind–body cueing in managing movement-related fear in CNSLBP. Conclusions: This study underscores the effectiveness of an 8-week Pilates intervention in managing CNSLBP, highlighting the added value of mind–body cueing in reducing fear of movement. These findings suggest incorporating mind–body cueing in Pilates could enhance the therapeutic benefits, particularly for patients with high levels of movement-related fear, potentially improving long-term adherence to physical activity and rehabilitation outcomes. Vigilance refers to the capability of humans to respond accordingly to relevant and unpredictable tasks and surrounding environment changes over prolonged periods of time. Identifying vigilance decrements can, therefore, have huge and vital impacts on several operational environments in which a simple slip of mind or a deficit in attention can bear life-threatening and disastrous consequences. Several methodologies have been proposed to assess and characterize vigilance, and the results have indicated that the sole measure of performance and self-reports are not enough to obtain reliable and real-time vigilance measure. Nowadays, monitoring head and body movements to obtain information about performance in daily activities, health conditions, and mental states has become very simple and cheap due to the miniaturization of inertial measurement units and their widespread integration into common electronic devices (e.g., smart glasses, smartwatches). The present study aimed to understand the relationship between head micromovements and body posture changes to vigilance decrease while performing the psychomotor vigilance task. The results highlighted that head micromovements can be employed to track vigilance decrement during prolonged periods of time and discriminate between conditions of high or low vigilance. Human societies have been trying to mitigate the suffering of individuals with physical impairments, with a special effort in the last century. In the 1950s, a new concept arose, finding similarities between animal exoskeletons, and with the goal of medically aiding human movement (for rehabilitation applications). There have been several studies on using exosuits with this purpose in mind. So, the current review offers a critical perspective and a detailed analysis of the steps and key decisions involved in the conception of an exoskeleton. Choices such as design aspects, base materials (structure), actuators (force and motion), energy sources (actuation), and control systems will be discussed, pointing out their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, examples of exosuits (full-body, upper-body, and lower-body devices) will be presented and described, including their use cases and outcomes. The future of exoskeletons as possible assisted movement solutions will be discussed—pointing to the best options for rehabilitation. Full article

Introduction: Health professionals and bodyworkers may be pivotal in promoting prevention programs, providing tailored advice and guidance to patients’ adherence to self-care strategies, such as physical activity. Contemporary evidence encourages manual therapists to involve patients in decision-making and treatment procedures integrating passive and active approaches in treatment planning. This manuscript provides a definition and applications of neuromyofascial movement patterns, discusses the significance of functional assessment, and gives an example of clinical applications in the osteopathic field to highlight how this assessment can promote interdisciplinarity. Methods: The reporting framework used in the current manuscript followed guidelines for writing a commentary. Results: The manuscript highlights the crucial role that the neuromyofascial system plays in human movement and overall well-being and the importance of a functional neuromyofascial activity assessment in the context of person-centered participative care. Conclusions: Understanding individual neuromyofascial patterns could help healthcare practitioners, movement specialists, and bodyworkers in tailoring treatment plans, meeting patients’ unique needs, and promoting a more effective personalized approach to care. The current perspective could spark debates within the professional community and provide a research roadmap for developing an evidence-informed interprofessional framework. Full article

Background: Lifestyle-based multimodal interventions that integrate physical, sensory, cognitive and social enrichment are suggested to promote healthy mental aging and resilience against aging and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Objectives: This meta-analysis examined the efficacy of dance movement interventions (DMI) as an integrated mind–body activity on outcomes of psychological health in older adults. Methods: Pre-registration was carried out with PROSPERO (CRD42021265112). PubMed, Web of Science and PsycINFO were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCT) evaluating the effects of DMI (>4 weeks’ duration) compared to comparators on measures of psychological health (primary outcome) and cognitive function (additional outcome) among older adults without dementia (aged ≥55). Data of 14 primary RCT (n = 983, n-DMI = 494, n-control = 489) were synthesized using a random effects meta-analysis with robust variance estimation. Results: DMI had a small positive effect on overall psychological health (g = 0.30; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.06, 0.53; p = 0.02, I2= 65.04) compared to control conditions. Small effects of DMI on positive and negative psychological domains as well as quality of life were not statistically significant. DMI had a medium positive effect on general cognitive function (g = 0.50; 95% CI: 0.12, 0.89, p = 0.02, I2= 79.61) over comparators. None of the primary intervention studies evaluated measures of neuroplasticity. Conclusions: We found that DMI was effective in promoting mental health amongst older adults without dementia, suggesting that the multimodal enrichment tool is a potential strategy for health promotion and prevention of AD. High-quality intervention studies are needed to expand evidence on DMI-induced changes in specific psychological domains and identify underlying neurophysiological correlates. Full article
