Technology roadmapping is conducted by systematic mapping of technological evolution through patent analytics to inform innovation strategies. This study proposes an integrated framework combining hierarchical Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) modeling with multiphase technology lifecycle theory, analyzing 113,449 Derwent patent abstracts (2008–2022) across three dimensions: technological novelty, functional applications, and competitive advantages. By segmenting innovation stages via logistic growth curve modeling and optimizing topic extraction through perplexity validation, we constructed dynamic technology roadmaps to decode latent evolutionary patterns in AI-powered programmable manipulators (B25J classification) within an innovation trajectory. Key findings revealed: (1) a progressive transition from electromechanical actuation to sensor-integrated architectures, evidenced by 58% compound annual growth in embedded sensing patents; (2) application expansion from industrial automation (72% early stage patents) to precision medical operations, with surgical robotics growing 34% annually since 2018; and (3) continuous advancements in adaptive control algorithms, showing 2.7× growth in reinforcement learning implementations. The methodology integrates quantitative topic modeling (via pyLDAvis visualization and cosine similarity analysis) with qualitative lifecycle theory, addressing the limitations of conventional technology analysis methods by reconciling semantic granularity with temporal dynamics. The results identify core innovation trajectories—precision control, intelligent detection, and medical robotics—while highlighting emerging opportunities in autonomous navigation and human–robot collaboration. This framework provides empirically grounded strategic intelligence for R&D prioritization, cross-industry investment, and policy formulation in Industry 4.0. Full article

Background/Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) offers opportunities to enhance healthcare accessibility for people with disabilities (PwDs). However, their application in Saudi Arabia remains limited. This study explores PwDs’ experiences with AI technologies within the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 digital health framework to inform inclusive healthcare innovation strategies. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine PwDs across Riyadh, Al-Jouf, and the Northern Border region between January and February 2025. Participants used various AI-enabled technologies, including smart home assistants, mobile health applications, communication aids, and automated scheduling systems. Thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework was employed to identify key themes and patterns. Results: Four major themes emerged: (1) accessibility and usability challenges, including voice recognition difficulties and interface barriers; (2) personalization and autonomy through AI-assisted daily living tasks and medication management; (3) technological barriers such as connectivity issues and maintenance gaps; and (4) psychological acceptance influenced by family support and cultural integration. Participants noted infrastructure gaps in rural areas, financial constraints, limited disability-specific design, and digital literacy barriers while expressing optimism regarding AI’s potential to enhance independence and health outcomes. Conclusions: Realizing the benefits of AI for disability healthcare in Saudi Arabia requires culturally adapted designs, improved infrastructure investment in rural regions, inclusive policymaking, and targeted digital literacy programs. These findings support inclusive healthcare innovation aligned with Saudi Vision 2030 goals and provide evidence-based recommendations for implementing AI healthcare technologies for PwDs in similar cultural contexts. The discovery of new microbial metabolites is essential to combat the alarming rise in antimicrobial resistance and to meet emerging medical needs. This work critically reviews current strategies for identifying antimicrobial compounds, emphasizing the potential of microorganisms as a rich source of bioactive secondary metabolites. This review explores innovative methods, such as investigating extreme environments where adverse conditions favor the emergence of unique metabolites; developing techniques, like the iChip, to cultivate previously uncultivable bacteria; using metagenomics to analyze complex samples that are difficult to isolate; and integrates artificial intelligence to accelerate genomic mining, structural prediction, and drug discovery optimization processes. The importance of overcoming current challenges, such as replicating findings, low research investment, and the lack of adapted collection technologies, is also emphasized. Additionally, this work analyzes the crucial role of bacterial resistance and the necessity of a holistic approach involving new technologies, sustained investment, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This work emphasizes not only the current state of metabolite discovery but also the challenges that must be addressed to ensure a continuous flow of new therapeutic molecules in the coming decades. South Africa’s bioeconomy strategy identifies bio-innovation as a key driver of economic growth and social development, with plant breeding playing a central role in improving food security through the development of high-yielding, resilient, and high-quality crops. However, consumer perceptions of recent advances, particularly new breeding techniques (NBTs), remain underexplored. This study examines South African consumer attitudes towards plant breeding innovations, using a mixed-methods approach. The initial focus group interviews informed the development of a structured quantitative survey examining familiarity, perceptions, and acceptance of plant breeding technologies. Consumer awareness of plant breeding principles was found to be limited, with 67–68% of respondents unfamiliar with both conventional and modern plant breeding procedures. Despite this information gap, consumers expressed conditional support for modern breeding techniques, especially when associated with actual benefits like increased nutritional value, environmental sustainability, and crop resilience. When favourable effects were outlined, support for general investment in modern breeding practices climbed from 45% to 74%. Consumer purchase decisions emphasised price, product quality, and convenience over manufacturing techniques, with sustainability ranked last among the assessed factors. Trust in the sources of food safety information varied greatly, with medical experts and scientists being ranked highly, while government sources were viewed more sceptically. The results further suggest that targeted education could improve customer confidence, as there is a significant positive association (R2 = 0.938) between familiarity and acceptance. These findings emphasise the significance of open communication strategies and focused consumer education in increasing the adoption of plant breeding breakthroughs. The study offers useful insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders working on engagement strategies to facilitate the ethical growth and application of agricultural biotechnology in support of food security and quality in South Africa. This study contributes to a better understanding of South African consumers’ perceptions of plant breeding innovations and food safety. The research findings offer valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders in developing effective engagement and communication strategies that address consumer concerns and promote the adoption of products derived from diverse plant breeding technologies. As market competition intensifies, the survival and development of suppliers increasingly rely on research and development (R&D) investment and innovation. Due to the uncertainty of factors affecting supplier R&D investment, the risks faced by supplier R&D investment are also uncertain. Therefore, identifying and assessing risks in advance and controlling risks can provide effective support for suppliers to carry out risk management of R&D investment. This paper selects key factors through literature review and factor analysis, and establishes a risk index evaluation system for R&D investment of medical material suppliers. Seventeen indicators that affect and constrain project investment factors were identified as input variables of the back propagation (BP) neural network, the comprehensive score of the R&D investment risk assessment was used as the output variable of medical supplies suppliers, and a risk assessment model for the R&D investment of medical material suppliers was established. By leveraging the ability of particle swarm optimization (PSO), whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and genetic algorithm (GA) to search for global optimal solutions, the BP neural network is improved to avoid becoming trapped in local optimal solutions and enhance the model’s generalization ability. The improvement in accuracy and convergence speed of these three methods is compared and analyzed. The results show that the BP neural network improved by the genetic algorithm has better accuracy and faster convergence speed in predicting and assessing risks. This indicates that the BP neural network model improved by genetic algorithm is effective and feasible for predicting the risk assessment of the R&D investment of medical supplies suppliers. Nanoparticle technology has emerged as a fundamental component across various industries, including electronics, renewable energy, textiles, and medical biotechnology, particularly for targeted drug delivery applications. Commercialization has profoundly impacted economic growth, especially in the pharmaceutical and electronics industries. Moreover, it has improved workforce education and training, generating millions of employment prospects associated with nanotechnology development. By 2024, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development anticipates that the global market for nanotechnology products will attain a value of United States Dollar (USD) 1 trillion to USD 3 trillion, resulting in the creation of over 2 million new employments globally. The swift progression of nanoparticle technology from 2000 to 2024 is primarily propelled by substantial industrial investment in research and development, alongside collaborations with academic institutions. The National Nanotechnology Initiative in the United States (US) has significantly contributed to these developments, with federal funding exceeding USD 30 billion by 2024 since its establishment in 2001. This funding has catalyzed significant advancements in both commercial and research applications of nanotechnology. Patent data highlights this expansion, with China establishing itself as the preeminent nation in nanotechnology patents. From 2000 to 2024, China steadily raised its proportion of nanotechnology patents, accounting for almost 40% of the global total by 2024. The US, Japan, Germany, and the Republic of Korea continued to be significant contributors, together advancing the frontiers of innovation in nanotechnology. In this timeframe, the quantity of nanotechnology-related patents increased by more than 150%, demonstrating the swift growth of the sector. The regulation of nanotechnology in the US is primarily managed by the Food and Drug Administration, particularly about healthcare and biotechnology applications. As the scope of nanotechnology uses has expanded, there is an increasing demand for more extensive regulations concerning potential long-term environmental and health effects. The future trajectory of nanotechnology, both in the US and worldwide, will hinge on continuous invention, economic advancement, and the progression of governmental policy. By upholding a robust regulatory framework and promoting ongoing collaboration between academics and industry, the complete potential of nanotechnology in advancing industrial and societal progress can be actualized. Background: Sleep quality is crucial for patient recovery and well-being, yet hospitalized patients often suffer from poor sleep due to environmental disruptions, clinical routines, and psychosocial stressors. While these challenges are well-documented, qualitative insights into nurses’ perspectives—essential frontline providers shaping the sleep environment—are scarce, especially within rapidly evolving healthcare systems like Saudi Arabia’s. This study explores nurses’ perceptions of factors influencing patient sleep quality in a private hospital in Al Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, and identifies strategies for improvement. Methods: We conducted a qualitative, cross-sectional study using semi-structured interviews with 14 registered nurses from diverse nationalities, specialties (Obstetrics/Gynecology, Medical-Surgical, Pediatrics, Intensive Care, Orthopedics, Bariatrics), and experience levels. Interviews were conducted in Arabic or English, audio-recorded, transcribed, and thematically analyzed using ATLAS.ti software. Roy’s Adaptation Model guided the examination of environmental, patient-specific, and systemic factors affecting sleep. Findings: Four primary themes emerged: (1). Environmental Factors: noise from alarms, equipment, family presence, and late-night activities, along with abrupt lighting changes, consistently disrupted sleep. (2). Patient-Specific Factors: pain, emotional distress, cultural expectations, and family involvement influenced sleep experiences. (3). Systemic and Contextual Factors: language barriers, infrastructural disparities between private and governmental hospitals, and limited resources can impeded effective sleep-promoting strategies. (4). Role of Health Technology: nurses recognized the potential of innovations like smart lighting and wearable monitors to enhance sleep quality but faced challenges in implementation due to knowledge gaps and limited familiarity. Roy’s Adaptation Model highlighted how effective adaptation through physiological and cognitive–emotional pathways, as observed by nurses, was facilitated or hindered by these factors. Conclusions: Enhancing in-hospital sleep quality requires a holistic, culturally sensitive approach that integrates environmental modifications, patient-centered care, and systemic improvements. Strategic investments in staff communication training, infrastructural upgrades, language support services, and the adoption of health technologies can promote adaptive responses and optimize patient rest. By leveraging theory-driven insights and context-specific strategies, healthcare systems—particularly those undergoing rapid development—can better support nurses in fostering restorative sleep environments as a fundamental component of patient-centered care, thereby enhancing patient recovery, satisfaction, and overall well-being. Artificial intelligence (AI) stands out as a significant technological innovation, driving progress in diverse areas such as big data analysis, supply chain management, energy efficiency, sustainable development, etc. The present study investigates how AI could contribute to the sustainability of the healthcare supply chain (HSC) and managing medical needs. Medical organizations can boost the logistics of their tasks, reduce pharmaceutical trash, and strengthen revenue projections through the adoption of AI tools. This study aims to provide a structured evaluation of AI-driven solutions for enhancing healthcare supply chain robustness, especially under conditions of uncertainty and complex logistics demands. To determine the investment value of AI applications in HSC management, the current research adopted a revolutionary multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) methodology tailored to the healthcare sector’s unique demands, including six critical factors. In light of these criteria, six highly technologically advanced AI-based solutions are examined. The implementation of a circular intuitionistic fuzzy set (CIFS) in the instance discussed provides a versatile and expressive way to describe vague and uncertain information. This study leverages the CIF topology to address data complexities and uncover the underlying structural features of a large dataset. At the outset, we adopted the LOPCOW approach, which includes logarithmic variation to assign weights to criteria, whereas the AROMAN method utilizes a powerful two-step normalization technique to rank alternatives, hence guaranteeing a trustworthy and accurate appraisal. A substantial degree of robustness was confirmed by the technique following a comparison of the operators as well as sensitivity testing. Full article

Cancer remains a leading cause of death globally. Cancer patients often seek alternative therapies in addition to, or instead of, conventional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. The progress in medical advancements and early detection provides more treatment options; however, the development of cancer drugs requires a significant amount of time, demands substantial investments, and results in an overall low percent of regulatory approval. The complex relationship between patent protection and pharmaceutical innovation complicates cancer drug development and contributes to high mortality rates. Adjusting patent criteria for alternative cancer therapeutics could stimulate innovation, enhance treatment options, and ultimately improve outcomes for cancer patients. This article explores the potential of alternative cancer therapeutics, chemopreventive agents, natural products, off-patent drugs, generic unpatentable chemicals, and repurposed drugs in cancer treatment, emphasizing the mechanisms and therapeutic potential of these unconventional compounds as combinatorial cancer therapies. The biological pathways, therapeutic effects, and potential to enhance existing therapies are reviewed, demonstrating their cost-effective and accessible options as adjuvant cancer therapies. The shift towards personalized cancer medicine (PCM) represents a significant transformation in cancer care, emphasizing tailored treatments based on the genetic understanding of cancer at the cellular level. This review draws on recent literature to explore key factors influencing PCM implementation, highlighting the role of innovative leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and coordinated funding and regulatory strategies. Success in PCM relies on overcoming challenges such as integrating diverse medical disciplines, securing sustainable investment for shared infrastructures, and navigating complex regulatory landscapes. Effective leadership is crucial for fostering a culture of innovation and teamwork, essential for translating complex biological insights into personalized treatment strategies. The transition to PCM necessitates not only organizational adaptation but also the development of new professional roles and training programs, underscoring the need for a multidisciplinary approach and the importance of team science in overcoming the limitations of traditional medical paradigms. The conclusion underscores that PCM’s success hinges on creating collaborative environments that support innovation, adaptability, and shared vision among all stakeholders involved in cancer care. Language barriers, specifically among refugees, pose significant challenges to delivering quality healthcare in Canada. While the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the emergence and development of innovative alternatives such as telephone-based and video-conferencing medical interpreting services and AI tools, access remains uneven across Canada. This comprehensive analysis highlights the absence of a cohesive national strategy, reflected in diverse funding models employed across provinces and territories, with gaps and disparities in access to medical interpreting services. Advocating for medical interpreting, both as a moral imperative and a prudent investment, this article draws from human rights principles and ethical considerations, justified in national and international guidelines, charters, codes and regulations. Substantiated by a cost-benefit analysis, it emphasizes that medical interpreting enhances healthcare quality and preserves patient autonomy. Additionally, this article illuminates decision-making processes for utilizing interpreting services; recognizing the pivotal roles of clinicians, interpreters, patients and caregivers within the care circle; appreciating intersectional considerations such as gender, culture and age, underscoring the importance of a collaborative approach. Finally, it provides recommendations at provider, organizational and system levels to ensure equitable access to this right and to promote the health and well-being of refugees and other individuals facing language barriers within Canada’s healthcare system. Today, we are already using several-component devices and systems based on the technologies developed during the first quantum revolution. Examples include microchips for servers, laptops and smartphones, medical imaging devices, LED, lasers, etc. Now, a second quantum revolution is progressing fast, exploiting technological advances for the ability to engineer and manipulate other quantum phenomena such as superposition, entanglement and measurement. As a matter of fact, there is an impressive increase in research and development activities, innovation, public and private investments in a new wave of quantum services and applications. In this scenario, quantum information and communication technologies (QICTs) can be defined as a set of technological components, devices, systems and methods for elaborating, storing and transmitting/sharing quantum information. This paper addresses the challenges and opportunities enabling the rise of QICTs. In order to provide a concrete example, the paper describes an overview of the European project EQUO (European Quantum ecOsystems) dealing with ongoing innovation activities in the QICT avenue; in fact, EQUO aims at developing and demonstrating the feasibility of QKD (quantum key distribution) networks and their related integration in current telecommunications infrastructures towards the quantum internet. Background: Emergency medical services (EMS) are essential in providing timely medical attention and transportation to people in need during times of crisis. Effective EMS operations are crucial for delivering prompt and effective healthcare. However, the landscape of EMS operations is constantly evolving, posing a number of challenges that require rigorous research and innovative solutions. Objectives: To highlight the key challenges facing EMS departments in their daily operations and discuss potential solutions. Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted. Relevant studies were identified by searching electronic databases, such as PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. Results: The main challenges facing EMS departments include an increasing demand for services, limited resources, aging infrastructure, technological advancements, and regulatory compliance. Operational-level solutions that can be used to address these challenges include investing in technology, cross-training personnel, developing contingency plans, and partnering with other organizations. Conclusion: EMS departments today face a variety of challenges. However, there are a number of approaches that can be taken to address these challenges. By investing in technology, cross-training personnel, developing contingency plans, and partnering with other organizations, EMS departments can improve their operations and provide the best possible care to patients. The future of innovative robotic technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) in pharmacy and medicine is promising, with the potential to revolutionize various aspects of health care. These advances aim to increase efficiency, improve patient outcomes, and reduce costs while addressing pressing challenges such as personalized medicine and the need for more effective therapies. This review examines the major advances in robotics and AI in the pharmaceutical and medical fields, analyzing the advantages, obstacles, and potential implications for future health care. In addition, prominent organizations and research institutions leading the way in these technological advancements are highlighted, showcasing their pioneering efforts in creating and utilizing state-of-the-art robotic solutions in pharmacy and medicine. By thoroughly analyzing the current state of robotic technologies in health care and exploring the possibilities for further progress, this work aims to provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the transformative power of robotics and AI in the evolution of the healthcare sector. The association between housing insecurity and reduced access to healthcare, diminished mental and physical health, and increased mortality is well-known. This association, along with structural racism, social inequities, and lack of economic opportunities, continues to widen the gap in health outcomes and other disparities between those in higher and lower socio-economic strata in the United States and throughout the advanced economies of the world. System-wide infrastructure failures at municipal, state, and federal government levels have inadequately addressed the difficulty with housing affordability and stability and its associated impact on health outcomes and inequities. Healthcare systems are uniquely poised to help fill this gap and engage with proposed solutions. Strategies that incorporate multiple investment pathways and emphasize community-based partnerships and innovation have the potential for broad public health impacts. In this manuscript, we describe a novel framework, “Give, Partner, Invest,” which was created and utilized by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Insurance Services Division (ISD) as part of the Integrated Delivery and Finance System to demonstrate the financial, policy, partnership, and workforce levers that could make substantive investments in affordable housing and community-based interventions to improve the health and well-being of our communities.
