Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a promising non-invasive sensing technique, yet its practical application in resource-constrained environments is often limited by the high computational cost of inverse image reconstruction. To address this challenge, we focus on specific sensing objectives rather than full image recovery. In this study, we propose a lightweight, task-oriented inference framework for object localization in EIT that bypasses the need to solve computationally expensive inverse reconstruction problems. This approach addresses the high computational demands and hardware complexity of conventional iterative methods, which often hinder real-time monitoring in resource-constrained edge computing environments. Training datasets were generated via finite element method (FEM) simulations for Opposite and Adjacent current injection configurations. A feedforward neural network was developed to independently estimate the radial and angular object positions as probability distributions. Our systematic evaluation revealed that the localization performance depends on the injection configuration and model depth; notably, the Opposite method achieved perfect classification accuracy (1.00) for radial estimation with an optimized architecture of four hidden layers, whereas the Adjacent method exhibited higher ambiguity. Results quantitatively evaluated using the Wasserstein distance show that the Opposite configuration produces more localized, unimodal probability distributions than the Adjacent configuration by utilizing current fields that traverse the entire domain. Compared with existing image-based reconstruction methods, including the conventional electrical impedance tomography and diffuse optical tomography reconstruction software (EIDORS ver.3.12), the proposed framework reduced energy consumption from 3.09 to 0.96 Wh, demonstrating an approximately 70% improvement in energy efficiency while maintaining a high localization accuracy without the need for iterative Jacobian updates. This task-oriented framework enables reliable, high-speed, and energy-efficient localization, making it well-suited for low-power EIT applications in mobile and embedded sensor systems. Full article

To reduce measurement uncertainty on time samples, BTT systems require measurement probes to meet high dynamic performance requirements. Anisotropic magnetoresistive (AMR) sensors have recently gained interest for this application owing to their high sensitivity to magnetic flux variations and robustness in harsh, contaminated environments. However, a thorough dynamic characterization of AMR-based BTT probes remains largely unexplored, representing a critical gap in next-generation industrial measurement systems. This work presents a custom-designed signal conditioning circuit tailored for AMR-based BTT measurements, alongside a systematic methodology for characterizing its dynamic performance. The circuit is modeled as a block diagram, from which transfer functions are derived analytically and validated experimentally, providing a rigorous and reproducible framework for probe dynamic assessment. The complete instrumentation chain is then tested on a low-speed rotor test bench in a BTT configuration. Results reveal a fundamental sensitivity–bandwidth trade-off: satisfying the cutoff frequency requirement imposed by BTT applications inherently reduces signal gain below the threshold needed to resolve individual blade-passage events. This finding isolates the key design bottleneck for AMR-based BTT probes and provides quantitative guidance for future optimization of both sensor and circuit design toward industrial tip-timing deployment. To address the challenges of sensor installation limitations, severe background noise interference, and low model deployment efficiency in rolling bearing fault diagnosis in industrial environments, this paper proposes a lightweight, progressive fusion and knowledge-distillation diagnostic framework that integrates vibration and sound signals. First, considering the differences in physical characteristics between vibration and sound signals, a feature-extraction network for heterogeneous modality perception is designed: the vibration branch employs a large-kernel one-dimensional convolutional neural network, while the sound branch uses a small-kernel stacked two-dimensional convolutional neural network, with depthwise separable convolutions introduced for lightweight modification. Second, an attention-gated progressive feedback fusion strategy is proposed. Learnable gating units are used to filter the confidence of the fused features, feeding them back to the original input as residuals, effectively suppressing noise accumulation and improving fusion quality. Finally, a cross-architecture knowledge-distillation scheme is constructed, transferring the fault feature-discrimination ability from the deep heterogeneous fusion network (teacher network GAF-Net) to the lightweight LightGBM (student network Distilled-LGB). Combined with a normal sample statistical feature alignment mechanism, the student model can independently complete end-to-end fault diagnosis only with online-extractable handcrafted features, achieving microsecond-level pure model inference speed while ensuring diagnostic accuracy, fully meeting industrial edge deployment requirements. Experiments on a self-built industrial dataset and the public UOEMD-VAFCVS dataset show that GAF-Net achieves 97.89% (A → B) and 96.72% (15 Hz → 30 Hz) accuracy. Distilled-LGB achieves 21 ms inference time and 4.2 MB model size with <1% accuracy loss, demonstrating noise robustness, cross-condition generalization, and edge deployment capability. Full article

Industrial predictive maintenance programs often rely on SCADA historian signals characterized by low-frequency sampling and asynchronous reporting intervals. These data constraints, specifically non-uniform scan rates and inter-tag time misalignment, limit the applicability of high-resolution or sensor-intensive prognostic models. This study proposes a lightweight, physics-informed health proxy, the temperature-weighted work (TWW) index, designed to monitor motor stator-winding degradation within these industrial limitations. The TWW index accumulates mechanical work derived from torque and speed measurements, weighted by an adaptive exponential temperature-emphasis function that penalizes operation at elevated temperatures. The formulation is inspired by practical thermal-aging heuristics such as Montsinger’s rule in the qualitative sense that higher temperatures are treated as disproportionately more damaging, but it is not intended as a direct implementation of a fixed absolute-temperature life law. Instead, it is designed as a lightweight adaptive index suitable for online SCADA-based implementation. To address SCADA-specific irregularities, the framework incorporates data synchronization and resampling techniques to align heterogeneous tags, alongside power-thresholding to isolate degradation-relevant load periods. The resulting cumulative index is mapped to a normalized health/RUL proxy using failure-referenced thresholds identified from historical events. Validation using field data from industrial three-phase motors demonstrates that the TWW index provides a monotonic degradation profile that is consistent with documented winding-related failures and proactive removals. Case studies confirm that the model enabled proactive maintenance interventions by signaling the terminal phase of insulation life before catastrophic breakdown, offering a hardware-free and scalable solution for real-time asset management. Micro-meteorological monitoring systems have been widely deployed in power grids, providing essential data to support the prevention and mitigation of ice- and wind-related disasters. However, understanding of the associated error mechanisms and quantitative evaluations under freezing rain and snow remains limited, particularly in complex field environments. This study presents a field-based quantitative assessment of two key variables, air temperature and wind speed, based on comparative observations collected over multiple winter icing cycles. We analyze the coupled effects of low temperature, ice accretion, and solar radiation on temperature measurements through multi-configuration sensor comparison, and characterize the dynamic response of cup anemometers under icing conditions using cross-correlation lag analysis. Results show that temperature error is dominated by sensor installation configuration and solar radiation. Under weak solar radiation, unshielded sensors tend to record lower temperatures than a standard Stevenson screen, but once radiation exceeds 200 W/m2, they warm rapidly and exhibit maximum positive biases of ~8–10 °C. Ice accretion further induces a cold bias of ~1 °C and a response lag of 5–18 min, while suppressing the rapid warming driven by shortwave radiation. For wind measurements, cup anemometers show clear underestimation during ice accretion, with the error increasing nonlinearly with ice thickness to ~20% before freezing-induced failure occurs. These findings provide a basis for improved sensor deployment and interpretation of field monitoring data in cold, humid, and icing-prone environments, although the quantitative results are site-dependent. To meet daily grasping needs under lightweight, low-complexity wearable constraints, this study proposes an underactuated multi-finger prosthetic hand with transmission–control co-design to achieve predictable multi-joint synergies and stable grasps under limited actuation. The prototype uses six miniature motors to drive 14 joint degrees of freedom (DOFs): four fingers have active metacarpophalangeal actuation with tendon-driven underactuated proximal and distal interphalangeal joints, while the thumb provides two independently controlled DOFs for opposition expansion and posture adjustment. It supports five-finger power grasps, tripod pinches, and lateral pinches. To mitigate tendon slack and stroke inconsistency, active/passive tendon-length constraints are defined, and an equal-stroke configuration is obtained via chord-to-arc mapping. A layered STM32F767-based controller combines a reference rotation range limit (free motion) with encoder speed-decay detection (contact/near-stall) to realize per-finger termination and overdrive protection without force/tactile sensors. Experiments report a total mass of 176.6 g and a peak single-finger driving force of approximately 2.8 N. Following the Feix GRASP taxonomy (33 types), the hand reproduces 24 types (72.7%), covering power, intermediate and precision grasps, both thumb abduction/adduction postures, and palm–pad–side opposition/contact, with stable grasp formation across objects of varying geometries. Traditional vision-based vibration measurement is fundamentally constrained by the low sampling rates of area-scan cameras and the noise sensitivity of existing motion magnification algorithms. To overcome these spatiotemporal barriers, we propose a high-fidelity framework that integrates ultra-high-speed line-scan imaging with a 1D Complex Morlet Wavelet Phase-Based Video Magnification (CMW-PVM) algorithm. By extracting and manipulating the localized phase of 1D spatial signals, CMW-PVM effectively decouples structural dynamics from background noise while eliminating the computational redundancy associated with 2D spatial pyramid methods. Simulations demonstrate that CMW-PVM significantly extends the linear magnification range (up to α35) while preserving exceptional structural fidelity (FSIM >0.87) under severe noise conditions (SNR = 10 dB). Experimental validation against a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) reveals near-perfect kinematic accuracy, with a relative amplitude error of only 1.65%. Furthermore, at a 100 Hz high-frequency excitation, the system successfully resolves microscopic displacements (≈10 μm) without temporal aliasing—enabled not by violating sampling theory but by leveraging the high physical line rate of the line-scan sensor. This establishes a robust, non-contact, and computationally efficient paradigm for broadband, micro-amplitude vibration monitoring in industrial environments. Full article

High-performance operation of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) strongly depends on the reliable availability of rotor position and speed information. Although this information is commonly obtained using physical position sensors, such sensors increase system cost and structural complexity and may reduce long-term reliability, particularly in demanding operating environments. In this study, a model-based, discrete-time, nonlinear gradient observer is adapted for the sensorless estimation of rotor speed and position in PMSMs. The developed Runge–Kutta model-based gradient observer (RKGO) utilizes stator voltage inputs and measured stator currents within a mathematical motor model to estimate the system states. In contrast to conventional sensorless estimation approaches, the adopted observer framework exploits discretization-based gradient dynamics to enhance numerical robustness and convergence behavior under nonlinear operating conditions. The observer design specifically targets stable and accurate state estimation in discrete-time implementations, with a particular focus on low-speed operating conditions. The performance of the adapted method is experimentally evaluated under low-speed operating conditions, including transient and steady-state operation. Real-time implementation is carried out on a dSPACE DS1104 control platform, including loaded acceleration scenarios to assess practical robustness. In addition, a comparative analysis with the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the Runge–Kutta Extended Kalman Filter (RKEKF) is conducted at 60 rad/s under identical experimental conditions. Experimental results show that the RKGO method achieves accurate steady-state speed and position estimation with acceptable transient performance. The findings demonstrate that RKGO can be considered a viable alternative for low-speed sensorless PMSM drive applications. Full article

Assistive mobility devices for small animals require reliable monitoring to ensure safe and comfortable operation without increasing system complexity or invasiveness. This study presents a low-cost monitoring platform that integrates a laser-induced graphene (LIG) contact-temperature sensor into a passive mobility device for small dogs, supported by a lightweight Internet of Things (IoT) architecture. The system combines contact temperature, ambient temperature, speed, and obstacle distance using an energy-aware acquisition strategy and prioritized wireless transmission for near-real-time monitoring. An unsupervised anomaly detection framework based on Isolation Forest identifies potentially unsafe operating conditions without labeled pathological data by leveraging absolute temperature and the differential feature ΔT between contact and ambient measurements. Experimental validation was conducted under controlled indoor conditions across six independent sessions with a small-breed dog, including static and dynamic phases to ensure repeatability. The system achieved packet delivery ratios of approximately 95%, with typical end-to-end latencies below 500 ms and worst-case delays below 850 ms. The proposed approach detected localized thermal deviations associated with friction or prolonged contact while remaining robust to normal activity- and environment-driven variations. These results demonstrate the feasibility of integrating LIG-based sensing and unsupervised analytics into assistive animal mobility platforms to enhance safety through continuous, non-invasive monitoring. Localization and navigation techniques have become fundamental for modern lives, while achieving accurate results indoors still remains a significant challenge. The widespread adoption of smart devices, and especially smartphones, has increased the need for accurate and robust pedestrian dead reckoning systems that operate in infrastructure-less environments. Pedestrian dead reckoning’s primary challenge is maintaining accuracy despite varying smartphone placements (attitudes) and the noisy, low-cost inertial measurements units. In this work, a comprehensive pedestrian dead reckoning framework is presented that integrates advanced step counting and heading estimation techniques. For step detection and counting, we propose a robust step counting algorithm that utilizes the optimum fusion of the raw IMU readings, i.e., accelerometer, linear accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer readings, each broken down into three degrees of freedom for different body placements and walking speeds. Furthermore, to address the critical issue of heading estimation, we propose the heading estimation axis mapping (HEAT-MAP) algorithm, which dynamically adjusts the sensor axes in response to the smartphone’s orientation, ensuring a consistent coordinate frame and reducing heading drift. Moreover, to eliminate cumulative pedestrian dead reckoning errors, the system incorporates an adaptive weighted fusion mechanism with Wi-Fi fingerprinting. Experimental results demonstrate that this integrated system significantly improves the overall trajectory accuracy, providing a high-precision, attitude-unconstrained solution for real-time indoor pedestrian navigation. To further explore the energy-saving potential of power-split hybrid electric vehicles, this paper addresses issues in traditional Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network-based vehicle speed prediction methods, which rely solely on time-varying information from historical speed sequences of the host vehicle, leading to problems such as idle overestimation, large local prediction errors, and low prediction accuracy across different time horizons. An improved RBF neural network-based vehicle speed prediction method that integrates multi-sensor information is proposed. This method identifies the driver’s driving intention through a fuzzy inference system, extracts historical speed sequences within a fixed time window in a rolling manner, and integrates inter-vehicle motion characteristic parameters obtained through fusion of millimeter-wave radar and camera data. These multi-dimensional influencing factors are used as inputs to the RBF neural network for vehicle speed prediction. Based on this, an energy management optimization model for the vehicle is established, with the goal of optimizing fuel economy. The model predictive control (MPC) strategy is employed, and the Dynamic Programming (DP) algorithm is used to solve for the real-time optimal torque distribution among various power sources within a limited time horizon. Finally, simulation validation is conducted on the MATLAB/Simulink platform under the CHTC-B driving cycle, CCBC driving cycle, and actual road driving cycle. The results show that, compared with the traditional method adopting Radial Basis Function (RBF) neural network-based vehicle speed prediction and rule-based energy management, the proposed method improves the vehicle’s fuel economy by 4.11%. Anti-friction bearings are fundamental components of rotating machines. In bearing condition monitoring, fault detection is a primary task, as any undetected faults could result in catastrophic failures and downtime losses. To ensure effective and reliable fault detection, the use of appropriate sensors and measurement technologies is essential. This paper presents a comparative study on the applications of four sensor types in bearing condition monitoring. These four sensor types are vibration accelerometer, encoder, acoustic emission (AE) sensor and motor current probe. Their effectiveness and practicability in bearing fault detection are evaluted. Data simultaneously measured from these four sensor types on a split roller bearing within an experimental rig are used for the analysis. Different factors such as machine operating speeds, bearing fault sizes and their location are considered during the experiments to understand the effectiveness and fault detectability of different sensors on a common bearing. Both the accelerometer and the AE sensor are observed to effectively detect all bearing faults from small to extended sizes and from low to high operating speeds. However, the other two sensors, the encoder and motor current probe, have been found to be sensitive only to relatively larger fault sizes and higher operating speeds. The study presents valuable insights into their advantages and limitations through a systematic comparison of roller bearing fault detection. The study provides a basis for sensor selection in bearing condition monitoring and fault detection to enhance the reliability of industrial maintenance activities. Full article

Wind energy harvesting based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) is a promising solution for powering distributed Internet of Things (IoT) nodes, yet its practical efficiency and stability are often hindered by the fluctuating and unpredictable nature of wind. Here, we propose a self-regulating TENG (SR-TENG) that leverages the synergistic effects of centrifugal, elastic, and frictional forces to automatically switch between non-contact and contact modes based on wind speed. This configuration achieves an ultra-low start-up wind speed of 0.86 m/s, ensures sustainable high-performance output across a broad wind speed range, and exhibits excellent durability with no observable performance degradation during 23,000 s of continuous operation at 375 rpm. Systematic structural optimization enables the SR-TENG to reach a peak open-circuit voltage of 140 V, a short-circuit current of 12.5 μA, and a transferred charge of 300 nC at 375 rpm. When integrated with a customized power management circuit, the system delivers a 30.39-fold increase in effective output power at a 1 MΩ load and a 4-fold faster charging rate for a 10 μF capacitor. For practical validation, the harvested ambient wind energy successfully powers a wireless temperature-humidity sensor for real-time cloud data transmission. These results highlight that the SR-TENG holds great potential for advanced wind energy harvesting and self-powered sensing applications in distributed IoT systems. Full article

Energy harvesting plays a pivotal role in enabling sustainable power supply for the Internet of Things and distributed sensor networks, particularly for low-power devices. Piezoelectric energy harvesters based on vortex-induced vibrations offer a promising solution for low-wind-speed applications, yet their performance is constrained by limited bandwidth and sensitivity to wind speed variations. This study addresses these limitations by proposing a novel multi-parameter adjustable piezoelectric energy harvester featuring an inclined cylindrical bluff body. By systematically tuning the inclination angle and installation position, the device achieves substantial performance improvements. Experimental results indicate that the optimized configuration yields a wider operational frequency band and enhanced energy conversion efficiency. Through the experimental results, we discovered the existence of the double-peak phenomenon and the plateau phenomenon. The voltage value of the second peak can reach up to 122.4% of the maximum voltage of the first peak. The duration of the maximum plateau phase can maintain between the wind speed of 2.3 m/s and 5.7 m/s. Full article

Collisions between over-height vehicles and low-clearance bridges cause infrastructure damage and pose safety risks. Existing detection systems rely primarily on optical sensors, which suffer from performance degradation in adverse weather conditions. This paper presents an alternative approach based on a 94 GHz millimeter-wave radar that achieves velocity-independent height measurement. The proposed technique exploits the ratio of Doppler shifts from two scattering centers on a vehicle, specifically the roof and the wheel–road interface. This ratio depends only on the measurement geometry, as the unknown vehicle velocity cancels algebraically, enabling direct height computation without speed measurement. The paper provides a closed-form height estimation model, analyzes the trade-off between frequency resolution and geometric constancy during integration, and presents experimental validation using a scaled laboratory testbed. An optical tracking system is used solely for ground-truth validation in the laboratory and is not required for operational deployment. Results across six test cases with heights ranging from 20 cm to 46 cm demonstrate an average absolute error of 0.60 cm and relative errors below 3.3 percent. A scaling analysis for representative full-scale geometries indicates that at highway speeds of 80 km/h, integration times in the millisecond range (approximately 3–18 ms for representative 20–50 m measurement standoff) are feasible; warning distance can be extended independently by upstream radar placement. The expected advantage in fog, rain, and dust is based on established W-band propagation characteristics; dedicated adverse-weather and full field validation (including multipath, clutter, and multi-vehicle scenarios) remain future work.
