Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating metabolism and cardiovascular function, with even mild dysfunction—such as subclinical hypothyroidism—negatively impacting heart health. While previous studies have confirmed the effects of iodine, selenium, and vitamin D on thyroid regulation and inflammation, the combined role of these nutrients in reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in autoimmune thyroid disorders remains insufficiently understood. This review explores the influence of specific micronutrients—including selenium, iodine, and zinc—and dietary patterns, particularly the Mediterranean diet, on the pathophysiology of hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. We introduce a novel framework that integrates emerging data on sex-specific micronutrient interactions and nutritional immunomodulation. Unlike the existing literature, this review introduces original hypotheses related to sex-specific nutritional immunomodulation and proposes a novel framework for micronutrient-driven dietary intervention in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and supporting development through the production of the hormones T4 and T3. These hormones are essential during childhood for nervous system myelination, physical growth, puberty, skeletal and dental maturation, and overall metabolic balance. In early infancy, when the hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid axis is still immature, thyroid dysfunction can result in a range of long-term complications. The metabolism and action of thyroid hormones depend not only on iodine but also on other vital micronutrients, particularly selenium (Se). This narrative review aims to comprehensively examine the role of selenium in maintaining thyroid health from fetal life through adolescence. Selenium is a key micronutrient involved in thyroid development, hormone synthesis, antioxidant defense, and immune regulation, especially during pregnancy and childhood. Inadequate selenium levels may contribute to the onset, progression, and clinical management of various thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroid diseases. Although scientific evidence supports selenium’s critical functions in hormone metabolism and antioxidant protection, public awareness and monitoring of selenium intake remain insufficient. Beyond the need for further research, there is an urgent call for integrated public health strategies, ranging from sustainable, food-based approaches to targeted clinical screening and educational programs. Promoting awareness of selenium’s importance and incorporating selenium status into maternal and pediatric care protocols could play a significant role in preventing deficiencies and supporting long-term endocrine and neurodevelopmental health. Iodine deficiency remains one of the most serious global public health challenges, recognised as the leading cause of preventable brain damage worldwide. It is widely accepted as the primary aetiological factor underlying iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). Inadequate maternal iodine intake reduces thyroxine synthesis, impairing foetal brain development and leading to long-term deficits in cognitive function across childhood and adulthood. However, emerging evidence also suggests that excessive iodine intake may disrupt thyroid function, particularly in individuals with underlying thyroid autoimmunity, potentially leading to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. In this state-of-the-art review, we examine the effects of iodine nutrition during pregnancy and lactation on child cognitive outcomes. We provide an overview of the recent global iodine status, critically appraise the current evidence linking both iodine deficiency and excess to neurodevelopmental outcomes, and offer expert interpretation of the key findings. We further highlight areas of uncertainty, introduce emerging evidence from contemporary studies, and propose directions for future research to inform and optimise public health policies and clinical practice. Our findings highlight a U-shaped association, whereby both insufficient and excessive iodine exposure during pregnancy and lactation may impair optimal brain development in the offspring. Background/Objectives: Lactating mothers have increased nutritional requirements, but nutritional adequacy is difficult to achieve. Additionally, human milk (HM) composition depends on maternal diet. However, the nutritional intake and status of mothers with hospitalized very preterm infants (MHVPIs) (<32 weeks of gestational age) have rarely been assessed. Hence, the aim of the present study was to determine the intake of macronutrients, micronutrients, and lipids, as well as the nutritional status of MHVPIs. The results were compared with a group of HM donors (HMDs), and associations with HM composition were evaluated using multiple linear regression. Methods: For dietary assessment, a 5-day dietary record including supplement intake was completed by 15 MHVPIs and 110 HMDs. Vitamins and fatty acids (FA) were determined in plasma and erythrocytes; minerals and methylmalonic acid were determined in urine; and macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, and the lipid profile were determined in HM. Results: Considering dietary reference intakes, the dietary evaluation of MHVPIs revealed a high percentage of inadequate nutrient intake in relation to total energy, as well as for iodine and vitamins B8, B9, C, D, and E. A high protein intake was observed. The percentage of energy from carbohydrates was low, whereas the percentage of energy from fat was high. However, the diet of MHVPIs did not differ substantially from the diet of HMDs. Associations were observed between the study groups (MHVPI vs. HMD) and the HM concentration of protein, several micronutrients, and fatty acids independent from intake and status. Conclusions: Deficient nutrient intakes did not appear to be exclusively related to MHVPI but rather seemed to be widespread in both study groups. However, for preterm infants, an insufficient supply of nutrients is critical and should be addressed in order to improve preterm infant’s outcomes. Furthermore, we provided additional insights into the exploration of HM by relating its composition to prematurity. Full article

Background/Objectives: Hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) to iodinated contrast media (ICM), both immediate and non-immediate, pose clinical challenges despite using low-osmolality agents. This review aims to summarize current diagnostic approaches, cross-reactivity patterns, and the debated role of premedication. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using PubMed (2014–2024), selecting studies on ICM-related HSRs, focusing on skin and in vitro testing, drug provocation tests (DPTs), cross-reactivity, and premedication. Results: Skin tests show limited sensitivity, especially for non-immediate reactions. Cross-reactivity among ICMs is common but unpredictable. DPTs are the diagnostic gold standard but lack standardized protocols. Premedication is frequently used, though its efficacy remains uncertain. Conclusions: The management of ICM hypersensitivity is limited by diagnostic gaps and insufficient evidence on premedication. Standardized protocols and prospective studies are needed to improve patient safety and guide clinical decisions. Full article

Objective: Maintaining adequate iodine intake during pregnancy contributes to achieving a viable fetus with proper neuropsychological development. Because of the lack of national data regarding the assessment of iodine status in pregnant women—conducted through urinary iodine determination in perimarine regions, geographical areas characterized by sufficient iodine intake—this study was undertaken. Materials and Methods: The study evaluated iodine status in a cohort of pregnant women from southeastern region of Romania, perimarine area, assessing iodine intake indicators and the severity of iodine deficiency levels. Results: Iodine nutritional status, based on urinary iodine concentration values adjusted to urinary creatinine, was insufficient in 47.3% of pregnancies. Moderate iodine deficiency was found in 43.2%, while severe iodine deficiency was identified in only 4.1%. Conclusions: Although this is a non-endemic region for iodine deficiency disorders, the perimarine area of Romania presents a moderate iodine deficiency among special population groups such as pregnant women. This situation necessitates iodine intake adaptation and periodic monitoring to prevent maternal-fetal thyroid dysfunctions. Full article

Background: Pregnancy simulates a metabolic syndrome-like state and predisposes to iodine deficiency and hypothyroidism through increased iodine renal loss and transplacental transfer to the fetus. Iodine deficiency is thought to predispose to dyslipidemia through elevation of serum TSH. Obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypothyroidism are established risk factors of preeclampsia. Hence, pregnant women with iodine deficiency are likely to be at increased risk of dyslipidemia and preeclampsia. We investigated the pattern of dyslipidemia among preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant women with and without iodine deficiency. Methods: The pathophysiological mechanisms linking iodine deficiency and dyslipidemia were delineated using bivariate correlations, logistic regression, and exploratory factor analysis of anthropometric, lipid profile, urine iodine concentration (UIC), and thyroid function data from 240 women with preeclampsia and 120 normotensive pregnant controls at term who attended Lomo Medical Centre, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Results: Preeclamptic women with iodine deficiency had significantly lower HDL-C but higher triglyceride levels than those with sufficient iodine intake. Both normotensive and preeclamptic participants with elevated TSH had high serum oxidized LDL-C but low NO, p < 0.001. Conclusions: SCH, secondary to iodine deficiency, is associated with elevated serum oxidized LDL and decreased Nitric Oxide (NO) among both normotensive and preeclamptic women, while insufficient iodine nutrition among preeclamptic women predisposes to reduced HDL-C and increased serum Triglycerides, which are risk factors of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. In Eastern Europe, the number of vegetarians is growing, and the number of people adhering to Christian Lents is traditionally high. However, data on the nutritional value of plant-based diets in this part of the world are limited. The aim of this study was to compare the nutritional intakes of three groups with different plant-based patterns with that of omnivores in Russia, Moscow region. The nutrient intakes of 46 vegans, 49 lacto-ovo-vegetarians, 42 people who adhered to Orthodox Great Lent, and 48 omnivores were assessed. The food frequency questionnaire method was used for data collection and analysis. The differences in absolute and calorie adjusted nutrient intakes between the groups were analysed. Additionally, a pairwise comparison of the general plant-based group (combined of the vegan, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, and Great Lent samples) and the omnivorous groups was conducted. Vegan diet was the most favourable in micronutrient composition. The intake of many micronutrients increased when switching to a more plant-based diet from a more animal-based one. The opposite association was observed only for selenium and vitamins D and B12. Fasting people consumed more iodine and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids; however, after the calorie content was standardized, the omnivores caught up with them. The omnivores had the largest list of dietary inadequacies: they significantly more often than all other groups had inadequate intake of cholesterol (excessive), fibre, potassium, magnesium, iron, and vitamins B1, B6, B9, and E (insufficient). Inadequate intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids, calcium, iodine, chromium, molybdenum, and zinc; or vitamins B2, PP, H, B12, and D was observed rather often in all the studied groups. Although, the vegan diet was richer in most micronutrients, plant products often contain substances that reduce the bioavailability of various nutrients, which can partially affect their status in the body, and, thus, may increase the need in them in vegetarians and fasters. CPPU and Ethylene Inhibitors as an Environmentally Friendly Strategy for Improving Fruit Retention, Yield, and Quality in Avocado

Avocado fruit drop after fruit set causes avocado orchards to suffer significant losses in the fruit yield, oil yield, and quality parameters of fruits. An insufficient crop load, as a result of excessive fruit drop, can reduce avocado orchard profitability. Hence, this study aimed to mitigate these problems using 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), and N-(2-Chloro-4-pyridyl)-N′-phenyl urea (CPPU) as an environmentally friendly and cost-effective strategy to reduce accumulative fruit drop and enhance the productivity and quality of Fuerte avocado fruits. The experiment was conducted over two consecutive seasons using a randomized complete block design with eight treatments: control, 1-MCP (200 ppm), AVG (200 ppm), CPPU (5 ppm), 1-MCP + AVG, 1-MCP + CPPU, AVG + CPPU, and 1-MCP + AVG + CPPU. These treatments were applied twice, at full bloom and at the beginning of the fruit set. Avocado trees treated with 5 ppm CPPU significantly reduced accumulative fruit drop. Additionally, treatments with 1-MCP + AVG + CPPU and CPPU at 5 ppm notably improved the yield and quality of Fuerte avocado fruits by increasing fruit weight, length, width, dry matter content, total carbohydrates, crude protein, total soluble solids (TSSs), and fruit mineral content (P, K, Ca, Mg, and Fe). In contrast, treatments with 1-MCP or/and AVG had a negative impact on fruit TSSs, acidity, and carotenoid content, while producing the highest levels of chlorophyll a, b, and total chlorophyll. Treatments with CPPU alone or combined with 1-MCP and/or AVG significantly enhanced avocado oil content, with slight effects on peroxide, iodine, and saponification values. Based on the results, 1-MCP + AVG + CPPU treatment is recommended for avocado growers to enhance fruit growth, yield, quality, and oil production. Full article

Classical preoperative skin antisepsis is insufficient in completely eliminating bacterial skin colonization for arthroplasty. In contrast, photodynamic therapy (PDT) with red light and methyl-aminolevulinate (MAL), combined with skin antisepsis, led to the absence of bacterial growth in healthy participants, though with local skin erythema, posing an obstacle for orthopedic surgery. Therefore, we explored whether artificial daylight PDT (PDT-DL) was superior to red light. Twenty healthy participants were allocated to either 5-aminolevulinic acid-(5-ALA) PDT-DL (n = 10) or MAL-PDT-DL (n = 10) before antisepsis with povidone-iodine/alcohol. Skin swabs from the groin were taken to cultivate bacteria at baseline, after PDT-DL, and after the subsequent antisepsis. Additional swabs were taken on day 4 before and after antisepsis without PDT. The contralateral groin of each participant and of ten additional healthy volunteers served as the control (n = 30). In selected participants, 16S rRNA-based amplicon deep sequencing was performed. All participants showed a baseline bacterial colonization. After a PDT-DL with skin antisepsis, bacterial growth occurred in three (30%) and in one (10%) participants with 5-ALA and MAL, respectively, compared to the sixteen (55%) participants in the control group. On day 4, three (30%) participants per group showed positive cultures post antisepsis. Adverse effects were reported in six (60%) and zero (0%) participants for 5-ALA- and MAL-PDT-DL, respectively. The skin bacteriome changes correlated with the bacterial culture results. The MAL-PDT-DL with skin antisepsis significantly increased bacterial reduction on the skin without adverse effects. This offers an opportunity to prevent infections in arthroplasty patients and reduce antibiotic use, thus contributing to antibiotic stewardship goals emphasized in the One Health approach. Background: We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate whether children receiving long-term parenteral nutrition (LPN) are at risk of imbalances in selected trace elements. Methods: Serum levels of manganese, zinc, copper, selenium, and iodine were measured in 83 children on LPN and compared with 121 healthy controls. Children with signs of infection or elevated C-reactive protein levels were excluded. Elemental analysis was performed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Results: Manganese and copper levels were significantly lower in the study group compared with controls (p < 0.001) but remained within normal ranges. Iodine levels were also significantly lower in the study group (p < 0.05), though pediatric reference values are lacking. Zinc and selenium levels were significantly higher in the study group (p < 0.001), with median levels within normal ranges in both groups. Zinc, selenium, and iodine levels were higher in patients weighing ≤15 kg (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.02). Conclusions: Serum concentrations of manganese, copper, and selenium in the study group remained within normal ranges, even though children weighing over 15 kg received doses below those recommended by scientific guidelines. An iodine intake below 1 μg/kg/day in patients weighing over 15 kg appears insufficient. Patients on LPN required a higher zinc intake than current recommendations. Full article

Background: Pregnancy is a crucial period for maternal and fetal health, and in Lebanon, where cultural and economic factors influence dietary practices, there is an urgent need to evaluate the food consumption patterns and diet quality of pregnant women. Aim: To evaluate the food consumption patterns, energy intake, as well as macro- and micro-nutrient intake among a nationally representative sample of Lebanese pregnant women aged 18–49 years old. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out from March to October 2023, involving 500 pregnant women from all eight Lebanese governorates. Sociodemographic and medical information was gathered, food consumption was evaluated using a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and three 24-h recall, and anthropometric measurements were recorded. Results: The current population did not meet the USDA healthy pattern recommendations for whole grain, seafood, dairy, nuts, seeds and soy products consumption but exceeded the guidelines for vegetables, meats, poultry, eggs, oils, and refined grains. According to Mediterranean diet guidelines, the sample fell short in recommended intakes for fruits, olives/nuts/seeds, eggs, and olive oil, while surpassing the recommended levels for potatoes, legumes, pulses, sweets, red meat, processed meat, and fish and seafood. None of the participants met the energy requirements for their trimester and age group. In terms of macronutrient intake, the requirements for protein, unsaturated fats, and fiber were not met, while intakes of fats and sugars were exceeded. Regarding micronutrients, the recommended levels were not fully achieved, with particularly low intakes of vitamin D and iodine, as well as inadequate adherence to recommendations for iron, calcium, vitamin A, vitamin E, zinc, and choline. Additionally, a third of the participants did not meet the recommended intakes for folate and vitamin B12. Conclusions: The findings reveal significant dietary inadequacies among the current population, with participants failing to meet essential recommendations for whole grains and key food groups, alongside insufficient energy intake for their trimesters and age groups. Critical micronutrient deficiencies, particularly in vitamin D, iodine, and B vitamins, highlight the urgent need for targeted nutritional interventions and public health initiatives to improve dietary practices among pregnant women in Lebanon. Cardiovascular diseases, which are the leading cause of death in Croatia, are linked to the high prevalence of hypertension. Both are associated with high salt intake, which was determined almost two decades ago when Croatian Action on Salt and Health (CRASH) was launched. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate salt, potassium, and iodine intake using a single 24 h urine sample in a random sample of the adult Croatian population and to analyse trends in salt consumption after the CRASH was intensively started. Methods: In this study, we analysed data on 1067 adult participants (mean age 57.12 (SD 13.9), men 35%). Results: Mean salt and potassium intakes were 8.6 g/day (IQR 6.2–11.2) and 2.8 g/day (IQR 2.1–3.5), respectively, with a sodium-to-potassium ratio of 2.6 (IQR 1.8–3.3). We detected a decrease of 17.6% (2 g/day less) in salt consumption compared with our previous salt-mapping study. However, only 13.7% and 8.9% met the WHO salt and potassium recommended targets of 5 g/day and 3.5 g/day, respectively. Salt intake was higher, and potassium ingestion was lower, in rural vs. urban regions and in continental vs. Mediterranean parts of Croatia. Moderate to severe iodine insufficiency was determined in only 3% of the adult participants. Conclusion: In the last fifteen years, salt consumption has been significantly reduced in the Croatian adult population because of the intensive and broad CRASH program. However, salt intake is still too high, and potassium ingestion is too low. Salt reduction programs are the most cost-effective methods of cardiovascular disease prevention and merit greater consideration by the government and health policy makers. Full article

Ocean temperature profile information plays a key role in understanding the marine environment. The passive remote-sensing technique can provide sea surface temperature measurements over large areas. However, it is sensitive to the atmospheric environment and cannot provide seawater temperature profile information. The lidar technique is the only way to carry out seawater temperature profile measurements over large areas. However, it is insufficient for measuring speed, the receiving field, stability, spectral integrity, simple system structures, and so on. Therefore, we propose a Brillouin lidar method combining two iodine cells at different temperatures to realize temperature measurements, where one iodine cell is used as a filter to absorb the elastic scattering and the other as an edge detection discriminator to obtain the seawater temperature measurement. The system has a fast measurement speed, a large receiving field, a simple system structure, and high stability. The system feasibility was verified via principle simulation and real iodine absorption curve measurements. For an ocean temperature of [5 °C, 15 °C], a laser wavelength of 532.10495 nm was more appropriate, corresponding to the iodine pool temperature combinations of 50 °C and 78 °C. For an ocean temperature of [15 °C, 32 °C], a laser wavelength of 532.10518 nm was more appropriate, corresponding to the iodine cell temperature combinations of 60 °C and 78 °C. When the laser intensity reached a measurement precision of 1‰, the temperature could be predicted with an accuracy of up to 0.2 K. This work shows promise as a potential solution for seawater temperature profile measurement. Full article

Diets omitting whole food groups pose a risk for micronutrient insufficiencies, but there are no data as to whether those are suitably attenuated with dietary supplements (DS). Micronutrient intakes with food and DSs were analyzed in 130 healthy adults: 32 vegans, 37 vegetarians, 24 following low-carbohydrate high-fat diet (LCHF), and 37 omnivores. A total of 63% used DS (84% of vegans, 75% of LCHF, 54% of vegetarians, and 46% of omnivores); however, a DS did not always tackle dietary insufficiencies. Vitamin B12 was often supplemented in vegans in doses substantially higher than recommended, but it was supplemented less often in vegetarians, despite the low prevalence of sufficient intake. Only 43% of participants supplemented vitamin D in wintertime, 23% of them with an insufficient dose. Supplementation of potassium, calcium, and iodine was rare, despite low intake adequacy with food alone in all groups. Some micronutrients were supplemented unnecessarily, such as vitamin K, riboflavin, biotin, and iron. Multimicronutrient DSs were used often; they increased intake adequacy of group B vitamins but failed to sufficiently supplement vitamin D, potassium, calcium, and iodine. Although DS use increased micronutrient intake sufficiency when used properly, the knowledge on micronutrient inadequacy in all dietary patterns should be increased and the public should be educated on the proper use of DSs. Multimicronutrient DSs should be reformulated to tackle the insufficiencies. Full article
