Linear Variable Filter (LVF) hyperspectral cameras possess the advantages of high spectral resolution, compact size, and light weight, making them highly suitable for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms. However, challenges arise in data registration due to the imaging characteristics of LVF data and the instability of UAV platforms. These challenges stem from the diversity of LVF data bands and significant inter-band differences. Even after geometric processing, adjacent flight lines still exhibit varying degrees of geometric deformation. In this paper, a progressive grouping-based strategy for iterative band selection and registration is proposed. In addition, an improved Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) algorithm, termed the Double Sufficiency–SIFT (DS-SIFT) algorithm, is introduced. This method first groups bands, selects the optimal reference band, and performs coarse registration based on the SIFT method. Subsequently, during the fine registration stage, it introduces an improved position/scale/orientation joint SIFT registration algorithm (IPSO-SIFT) that integrates partitioning and the principle of structural similarity. This algorithm iteratively refines registration based on the grouping results. Experimental data obtained from a self-developed and integrated LVF hyperspectral remote sensing system are utilized to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. A comparison with classical algorithms, such as SIFT and PSO-SIFT, demonstrates that the registration of LVF hyperspectral data using the proposed method achieves superior accuracy and efficiency. A band-to-band mis-registration (BBMR) error often occurs in remote sensing (RS) images acquired by multi-spectral push broom spectrometers such as the Sentinel-2 Multi-spectral Instrument (MSI), leading to adverse impacts on the reliability of further RS applications. Although the systematic band-to-band registration conducted during the image production process corrects most BBMR errors, there are still quite a few images being observed with discernible BBMR. Thus, a quick BBMR detection method is needed to assess the quality of online RS products. We here propose a hybrid framework for detecting BBMR between the visible bands in MSI images. This framework comprises three main steps: first, candidate chips are captured based on Google Earth Engine (GEE) spatial analysis functions to shrink the valid areas inside image scenes as potential target chips. The redundant data pertaining to the local operation process are thus narrowed down. Second, spectral abnormal areas are precisely extracted from inside every single chip, excluding the influences of clouds and water surfaces. Finally, the abnormal areas are matched pixel by pixel between bands, and the best-fit coordinates are then determined to compare with tolerance. Here, the proposed method was applied to 71,493 scenes of MSI Level-1C images covering China and its surrounding areas on the GEE platform. From these images, 4356 chips from 442 scenes were detected with inter-band offsets among the visible bands. Further manual visual inspection revealed that the proposed method had an accuracy of 98.07% at the chip scale and 88.46% at the scene scale. Full article

In the context of the problem of image blur and nonlinear reflectance difference between bands in the registration of hyperspectral images, the conventional method has a large registration error and is even unable to complete the registration. This paper proposes a robust and efficient registration algorithm based on iterative clustering for interband registration of hyperspectral images. The algorithm starts by extracting feature points using the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) to achieve initial putative matching. Subsequently, feature matching is performed using four-dimensional descriptors based on the geometric, radiometric, and feature properties of the data. An efficient iterative clustering method is proposed to perform cluster analysis on the proposed descriptors and extract the correct matching points. In addition, we use an adaptive strategy to analyze the key parameters and extract values automatically during the iterative process. We designed four experiments to prove that our method solves the problem of blurred image registration and multi-modal registration of hyperspectral images. It has high robustness to multiple scenes, multiple satellites, and multiple transformations, and it is better than other similar feature matching algorithms. Full article

Accurate registration is an essential prerequisite for analysis and applications involving remote sensing imagery. It is usually difficult to extract enough matching points for inter-band registration in hyperspectral imagery due to the different spectral responses for land features in different image bands. This is especially true for non-adjacent bands. The inconsistency in geometric distortion caused by topographic relief also makes it inappropriate to use a single affine transformation relationship for the geometric transformation of the entire image. Currently, accurate registration between spectral bands of Zhuhai-1 satellite hyperspectral imagery remains challenging. In this paper, a full-spectrum registration method was proposed to address this problem. The method combines the transfer strategy based on the affine transformation relationship between adjacent spectrums with the differential correction from dense Delaunay triangulation. Firstly, the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) extraction method was used to extract and match feature points of adjacent bands. The RANdom SAmple Consensus (RANSAC) algorithm and the least square method is then used to eliminate mismatching point pairs to obtain fine matching point pairs. Secondly, a dense Delaunay triangulation was constructed based on fine matching point pairs. The affine transformation relation for non-adjacent bands was established for each triangle using the affine transformation relation transfer strategy. Finally, the affine transformation relation was used to perform differential correction for each triangle. Three Zhuhai-1 satellite hyperspectral images covering different terrains were used as experiment data. The evaluation results showed that the adjacent band registration accuracy ranged from 0.2 to 0.6 pixels. The structural similarity measure and cosine similarity measure between non-adjacent bands were both greater than 0.80. Moreover, the full-spectrum registration accuracy was less than 1 pixel. These registration results can meet the needs of Zhuhai-1 hyperspectral imagery applications in various fields. Full article
