Objectives: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and self-confidence of physicians and dentists in Croatia regarding the relationship between oral and systemic health, focusing on periodontal disease and oral manifestations of systemic diseases. Methods: A cross-sectional, web-based survey was conducted among physicians and dentists in Croatian primary healthcare. The questionnaire addressed six thematic domains, including demographic information, knowledge, self-assessment, and clinical practice. Descriptive and comparative statistical analyses were performed. Results: A total of 529 respondents were included (291 physicians and 238 dentists). The mean knowledge score for the association between periodontitis and systemic diseases was 6.8 ± 3.6 out of 15, indicating limited knowledge. For oral manifestations of systemic diseases, the mean score was 10.0 ± 3.8 out of 16, reflecting moderate proficiency. Dentists scored higher than physicians in both domains, though not significantly (p > 0.05). Routine oral mucosal examinations were reported by 89.5% of dentists and 43.0% of physicians (p ≤ 0.001). Only 21.3% of physicians correctly identified the link between periodontitis and adverse pregnancy outcomes, compared to 58.8% of dentists. The primary barriers to effective clinical management were a lack of experience (52.7%) and inadequate education. While 68.3% of dentists felt adequately educated on oral–systemic links, only 22.7% of physicians reported the same. Conclusions: Significant gaps in knowledge and confidence were observed, particularly among physicians. These findings underscore the need to integrate oral–systemic health topics into medical education and to promote interprofessional collaboration to improve patient outcomes. Full article

Background/Objectives: Children with severe physical and communication disabilities face many challenges. They have very limited opportunities for upright, hands-free, self-initiated mobility. Current findings in neuroscience and theories on child development suggest that self-initiated mobility can have positive cascading effects on various developmental areas, including language and communication. This study was conducted to examine the current use of hands-free support walkers with children who have severe physical and communication disabilities and use augmentative and alternative communication and to identify the benefits and problems perceived by their parents and professionals from different disciplines. Methods: Online surveys were utilized to collect information from 127 participants, including 31 parents and 96 professionals or paraprofessionals. Results: The participants reported that these children could perform various motor activities in the hands-free support walkers to achieve different goals. Benefits identified by both parents and professionals included providing a way to exercise and stay active, improving motor control, enhancing independence, and bringing enjoyment. Professionals also observed positive impacts on communication, vocalization, use of eye contact, and problem solving. Conclusions: Results suggest that children with severe physical and communication disabilities can benefit from the upright, hands-free, self-initiated mobility provided by hands-free support walkers. Clinical implications and needs for future research are discussed. Full article

Background/Objectives: Collaboration in mental health care is essential for implementing a model oriented towards the psychosocial rehabilitation of people based on multifaceted interventions involving different actors and sectors of society to respond to demands. Despite the benefits presented by the scientific evidence, there are still many barriers to collaborative care, and professionals continue to struggle in reorienting their conduct. The current situation demands organization and the framing of well-founded action plans to overcome challenges, which in turn requires a detailed understanding of collaborative practices in mental health care and their conceptual boundaries. A concept analysis was undertaken to propose a working definition of collaborative practices in mental health care (CPMHC). Methods: This paper used the Walker and Avant concept analysis method. This includes identifying the defining concept attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents. A literature search was carried out from November 2024 to February 2025 in three databases (Medline, CINAHL, and LILACS), considering studies published between 2010 and 2024. Results: The final sample of literature investigated consisted of 30 studies. The key attributes were effective communication, building bonds, co-responsibility for care, hierarchical flexibility, articulation between services, providers and community, monitoring and evaluating of care processes, and attention to the plurality of sociocultural contexts. Conclusions: This comprehensive analysis contributes to guiding future research and policy development of collaborative practices in mental health, considering the individual, relational, institutional, and social levels. Further research is possible to deepen the understanding of the production of collaborative practices in mental health in the face of the complexity of social relations and structural inequities. Osteoarthritis (OA) remains a major contributor to pain and disability; however, the current management is largely reactive, focusing on symptoms rather than preventing irreversible cartilage loss. This review first examines the mechanistic foundations for pharmacological chondroprotection—illustrating how conventional agents, such as glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate, can potentially restore extracellular matrix (ECM) components, may attenuate catabolic enzyme activity, and might enhance joint lubrication—and explores the delivery challenges posed by avascular cartilage and synovial diffusion barriers. Subsequently, a practical “What–How–When” framework is introduced to guide community pharmacists in risk screening, DMOAD selection, chronotherapeutic dosing, safety monitoring, and lifestyle integration, as exemplified by the CHONDROMOVING infographic brochure designed for diverse health literacy levels. Building on these strategies, the P4–4P Chondroprotection Framework is proposed, integrating predictive risk profiling (physicians), preventive pharmacokinetic and chronotherapy optimization (pharmacists), personalized biomechanical interventions (physiotherapists), and participatory self-management (patients) into a unified, feedback-driven OA care model. To translate this framework into routine practice, I recommend the development of DMOAD-specific clinical guidelines, incorporation of chondroprotective chronotherapy and interprofessional collaboration into health-professional curricula, and establishment of multidisciplinary OA management pathways—supported by appropriate reimbursement structures, to support preventive, team-based management, and prioritization of large-scale randomized trials and real-world evidence studies to validate the long-term structural, functional, and quality of life benefits of synchronized DMOAD and exercise-timed interventions. This comprehensive, precision-driven paradigm aims to shift OA care from reactive palliation to true disease modification, preserving cartilage integrity and improving the quality of life for millions worldwide. Aims/Background: Polypharmacy, or the concurrent intake of five or more medications, is a significant issue in clinical practice, particularly in multimorbid elderly individuals. Despite its importance for patient safety, medical education often lacks systematic training in recognising and managing polypharmacy within the framework of patient-centred care. We investigated the impact of a structured learning intervention introducing polypharmacy as a chronic condition, assessing whether it enhances medical students’ diagnostic competence, confidence, and interprofessional collaboration. Methods: A prospective cohort study was conducted with 50 final-year medical students who received a three-phase educational intervention. Phase 1 was interactive workshops on the principles of polypharmacy, its dangers, and diagnostic tools. Phase 2 involved simulated patient consultations and medication review exercises with pharmacists. Phase 3 involved reflection through debriefing sessions, reflective diaries, and standardised patient feedback. Student knowledge, confidence, and attitudes towards polypharmacy management were assessed using pre- and post-intervention questionnaires. Quantitative data were analysed through paired t-tests, and qualitative data were analysed thematically from reflective diaries. Results: Students demonstrated considerable improvement after the intervention in identifying symptoms of polypharmacy, suggesting deprescribing strategies, and working in multidisciplinary teams. Confidence in prioritising polypharmacy as a primary diagnostic problem increased from 32% to 86% (p < 0.01), and knowledge of diagnostic tools increased from 3.1 ± 0.6 to 4.7 ± 0.3 (p < 0.01). Standardised patients felt communication and patient-centredness had improved, with satisfaction scores increasing from 3.5 ± 0.8 to 4.8 ± 0.4 (p < 0.01). Reflective diaries indicated a shift towards more holistic thinking regarding medication burden. The small sample size limits the generalisability of the results. Conclusions: Teaching polypharmacy as a chronic condition in medical school enhances diagnostic competence, interprofessional teamwork, and patient safety. Education is a structured way of integrating the management of polypharmacy into routine clinical practice. This model provides valuable insights for designing medical curricula. Future research must assess the impact of such training on patient outcomes and clinical decision-making in the long term. Full article

Background: Pharmacy technicians are increasingly involved in immunization services, enhancing vaccine accessibility and reducing pharmacies’ workload. This scoping review aims to (1) provide a comprehensive overview of pharmacy technicians’ involvement in immunization services across various healthcare settings and countries, and (2) conduct a comparative analysis of training curricula for pharmacy technicians on immunization. Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the Arksey and O’Malley framework. A comprehensive search of the PubMed and Scopus databases was performed using keywords and MeSH terms such as “pharmacy technician(s)”, “immunization”, “vaccination”, “role”, and “involvement”. Studies included assessed pharmacy technicians’ roles in vaccine administration, training, and public health outcomes. Descriptive and thematic analyses were used to synthesize the findings. In addition, a supplementary analysis of immunization training curricula was conducted, reviewing programs from different countries to identify similarities, differences, and gaps in course structure, content, and delivery formats. Lastly, a comprehensive toolkit was developed, offering guidelines intended to facilitate the implementation of immunization training programs. Results: A total of 35 articles met the inclusion criteria, primarily from the United States of America (n = 30), Canada (n = 2), Ethiopia (n = 1), Denmark (n = 1) and United Kingdom (n = 1). The findings indicate that pharmacy technicians contribute significantly to vaccine administration, patient education, and workflow optimization, particularly in community pharmacies. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated their involvement in immunization programs. Key challenges include regulatory barriers, a lack of standardized training, and resistance from other healthcare professionals. Facilitators include legislative support (e.g., the PREP Act), structured training programs, and collaborative pharmacist–technician models. Conclusions: Pharmacy technicians can play a vital role in expanding immunization services, improving vaccine uptake, and reducing pharmacist workload. Addressing regulatory inconsistencies, enhancing training, and fostering interprofessional collaboration are crucial for their effective integration of immunization programs. Since immunization by pharmacy technicians is not yet allowed in many EU countries, this review will provide a foundational basis to address their potential to support the healthcare workforce and improve access to immunization services. Background/Objectives: Effective teamwork is crucial for minimizing human error in healthcare settings. Medical teams, typically composed of physicians and nurses, supported by auxiliary professionals, achieve better outcomes when they possess strong collaborative competencies. High-quality teamwork is associated with fewer adverse events and complications and lower mortality rates. Based on this background, the objective of this study is to analyze the perception of non-technical skills and immediate learning outcomes in interprofessional simulation settings based on E-CRM items. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted involving participants from the official postgraduate Medicine and Nursing programs at the Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) during the 2024–2025 academic year. Four interprofessional E-CRM simulation sessions were planned, involving randomly assigned groups with proportional representation of medical and nursing students. Teams worked consistently throughout the training and participated in clinical scenarios observed via video transmission by their peers. Post-scenario debriefings followed INACSL guidelines and employed the PEARLS method. Results: Findings indicate that 48.3% of participants had no difficulty identifying the team leader, while 51.7% reported minor difficulty. Role assignment posed moderate-to-high difficulty for 24.1% of respondents. Communication, situation awareness, and early help-seeking were generally managed with ease, though mobilizing resources remained a challenge for 27.5% of participants. Conclusions: This study supports the value of interprofessional education in developing essential competencies for handling urgent, emergency, and high-complexity clinical situations. Strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration contributes to safer, more effective patient care. Full article

This concept paper outlines an implementation strategy for a mandatory training programme using the ADDIE instructional design model for delivery to nurses and other health professionals in an interprofessional education (IPE) environment). Background: Competence in Basic Life Support (BLS) is a lifesaving requirement for health professionals in clinical settings to ensure patient safety and accreditation outcomes. It is essential that health professionals are supported in attending mandatory training, including BLS. To inform learning and teaching strategies, it is useful to apply theoretical perspectives to the development of mandatory staff training methods. However, various training models exist, and few are grounded in instructional design theory to the unique environment for BLS in IPE. Method: A theory-based implementation strategy is outlined for a mandatory interprofessional training programme including BLS, using the ADDIE model to enhance patient outcomes. ADDIE is an instructional design framework comprising five elements: Assess, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate; describing a learning methodology that can be readily applied to mandatory training in IPE. Results: Through its iterative capability, the ADDIE model promotes learner needs and rapid acquisition of clinical skills that improve training accessibility. The strategy can equip educators with teaching skills based on a robust theoretical model, with potential to promote nursing and health professional attendance for mandatory training. Conclusions: Mandatory health professional training that addresses a theory informed strategy framed by the ADDIE model can support interprofessional collaboration and consistent competency across healthcare teams. This strategy has potential to contribute by demonstrating how instructional design can be operationalised to improve the effectiveness and engaging approach to BLS training and education to the unique dynamics of an interprofessional environment. Psychological stress and dietary behavior are interdependent forces that greatly influence mental and physical health. Thus, both what and how we eat impact our well-being. Maladaptive eating patterns, such as eating in response to emotional cues rather than physiological hunger, have become increasingly common amid modern stressors and an ultra-processed food environment. This narrative review synthesizes interdisciplinary findings from nutritional psychiatry, microbiome science, and behavioral nutrition to explore how stress physiology, gut–brain interactions, and dietary quality shape emotional regulation and eating behavior. It highlights mechanisms (e.g., HPA-axis dysregulation, blunted interoception, and inflammatory and epigenetic pathways) and examines the evidence for mindful and intuitive eating; phytochemical-rich, whole-food dietary patterns; and the emerging role of precision nutrition. Trauma-informed approaches, cultural foodways, structural barriers to healthy eating, and clinical implementation strategies (e.g., interprofessional collaboration) are considered in the context of public health equity to support sustainable mental wellness through dietary interventions. Ultimately, restoring a healthy relationship with food positions nutrition not only as sustenance but as a modifiable regulator of affect, cognition, and stress resilience, central to mental and physical well-being. (1) Background: Human Papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal cancer is the fastest-growing head and neck malignancy, yet vaccination coverage remains suboptimal. (2) Methods: In this cross-sectional survey conducted from April 2022 to April 2023, 400 parents of patients aged 8–18 years (mean ± SD = 12.8 ± 2.6; 59.3% female) reported their child’s HPV vaccination status and willingness to initiate or complete the vaccine series at a dental clinic. For those who were not fully vaccinated, reasons for refusal were documented. (3) Results: Over half (54.5%, n = 218) of the children were not fully vaccinated. Notably, 21% (46/218) of parents indicated an immediate willingness to vaccinate their child if the dentist offered it—a significant potential for improvement compared to general healthcare settings. Reported barriers included preference for a physician’s office (43.6%), indecision (20.3%), unspecified concerns (14.5%), safety worries (8.1%), and religious objections (5.2%). Male and younger patients (9–11 years) showed significantly lower vaccination coverage (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusions: Dentists can substantially impact public health by integrating immunization counseling, interprofessional collaboration, and vaccine administration, thereby addressing critical gaps in HPV-related cancer prevention. These findings highlight the opportunity for dental offices to enhance vaccination rates and prompt further research, education, and policy initiatives to advance the oral and general health of our patients. Background: Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is considered fundamental for integrated, high-quality woman-centered care. This study analyzes concordance/differences in the perspectives of midwives and physicians on IPC and Equitable Communication (EC) in prenatal/postpartum (PPC) and birth care (BC). Methods: The short form of the ICS Scale (ICS-R with eight items) adapted for the midwifery context, and the EC scale (three items) were completed by 293 midwives and 215 physicians in Germany. Profession- and the setting-specific differences were analyzed using t-tests and ANOVA with repeated measurements. Confirmatory factor analysis with nested model comparisons test the fairness of the scales. Results: Midwives’ ratings of all IPC aspects were systematically lower than physicians’ in both care settings (variance component professional group: η2p = 0.227/ 0.318), esp. for EC (d = 1.22–1.41). Both groups rated EC higher in BC. The setting effect was less pronounced among physicians for the ICS-R items than among midwives. Violations of test fairness reveal validity deficiencies when using the aggregated EC sum score for group comparisons. Conclusions: Fundamental professional differences were found in the IPC assessment between physicians and midwives. The results enhance the understanding of IPC dynamics and provide starting points for action to leverage IPC’s potential for woman-centered care. Full article

Exploring Staff Perspectives on Implementing an Intervention Package for Post-Stroke Psychological Support: A Qualitative Study

Background: Psychological problems post-stroke can negatively impact stroke survivors. Although general psychological services exist (e.g., NHS Talking Therapies), access remains limited, particularly for individuals with post-stroke communication and cognitive impairments. Stroke service staff report low confidence in managing psychological distress. This study is the first to explore the barriers and facilitators to implementing a novel intervention package comprising a cross-service care pathway and staff training to enhance post-stroke psychological provision. Methods: Staff from stroke and mental health services in four UK regions, recruited through purposive sampling to ensure diversity of services and professional roles, participated in semi-structured interviews or focus groups, guided by the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF), before and after implementation of the intervention package. Pre-implementation interviews/groups identified anticipated barriers and facilitators to implementation and training needs, informing the development of site-specific intervention packages; post-implementation interviews/groups explored experienced barriers, facilitators and perceptions of the intervention. Interviews underwent thematic analysis using the TDF. Results: Fifty-five staff participated pre-implementation and seventeen post-implementation, representing stroke (e.g., nurse, physiotherapist, consultant) and psychology (e.g., counsellor, psychological therapist) roles across acute, rehabilitation, community, and voluntary services. Challenges anticipated pre-implementation included: limited specialist post-stroke psychological support; low staff confidence; and fragmented service pathways. Post-implementation findings indicated increased staff knowledge and confidence, enhanced screening and referral processes, and stronger inter-service collaboration. Implementation success varied across sites (with some sites showing greater ownership and sustainability of the intervention) and across staff roles (with therapy staff more likely than nursing staff to have received training). Conclusions: Effective implementation of an intervention package to increase psychological provision post-stroke requires staff engagement at all levels across all services. Staff investment influenced ownership of the intervention package, beliefs about priorities and overall enhancement of service capability. Full article

Upper extremity amputations significantly impact an individual’s physical capabilities, psychosocial well-being, and overall quality of life. The level at which an amputation is performed influences residual limb function, prosthetic compatibility, and long-term patient satisfaction. While surgical guidelines traditionally emphasize maximal limb preservation, prosthetists often advocate for amputation sites that optimize prosthetic fit and function, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach. This review examines the discrepancies between surgical and prosthetic recommendations for optimal amputation levels, from digit amputations to shoulder disarticulations, and explores their implications for prosthetic design, functionality, and patient outcomes. Various prosthetic options, including passive functional, body-powered, myoelectric, and hybrid devices, offer distinct advantages and limitations based on the level of amputation. Prosthetists emphasize the importance of residual limb length, not only for mechanical efficiency but also for achieving symmetry with the contralateral limb, minimizing discomfort, and enhancing control. Additionally, emerging technologies such as targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and advanced myoelectric prostheses are reshaping rehabilitation strategies, further underscoring the need for precise amputation planning. By integrating insights from both surgical and prosthetic perspectives, this review highlights the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach involving surgeons, prosthetists, rehabilitation specialists, and patients in the decision-making process. A greater emphasis on preoperative planning and interprofessional collaboration can improve prosthetic outcomes, reduce device rejection rates, and ultimately enhance the functional independence and well-being of individuals with upper extremity amputations. Background/Objectives: The pediatric mental health crisis in the United States has reached unprecedented levels. Severe shortages in specialized health care professionals, particularly child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAPs), exacerbate the challenge of delivering timely and quality mental health care, especially in rural areas like Kansas. Innovative models such as Pediatric Mental Health Care Access (PMHCA) programs and School-Based Health Clinics (SBHCs) aim to integrate mental health expertise into primary care settings to address this gap. Methods: This paper examines an integrated care model to support SBHCs developed by the Kansas PMHCA. The Interprofessional Child-Centered Integrated Care Model (ICX2) was implemented within an SBHC in Haysville, KS. ICX2 utilizes biweekly collaborative team meetings (CTMs) via zoom involving primary care, psychology, child psychiatry, social work, and school resource coordinators to discuss patient cases and enhance the primary care management of pediatric mental health. This descriptive study analyzes data from January 2023 to June 2023, focusing on patient demographics, case characteristics discussed during CTMs, and recommendations made by the interprofessional team. Results: Findings illustrate the complex biopsychosocial needs of patients seen and define themes of case consultation and recommendations. Conclusions: Integrated care programs like ICX2 can be feasibly implemented through PMHCA programs and may be an efficient intervention to bridge resource gaps. Full article

Climate change, urbanization, and socio-economic inequality are increasing the severity of urban challenges, emphasizing the imperative for a resilient built environment. Yet, architectural education has lagged in adopting resilience principles into its central curricula. This paper critiques dominant pedagogical paradigms and identifies shortcomings in interdisciplinary collaboration, digital tool adoption, and practical problem-solving. Moving its focus from local to international best practices for resilience, the study extracts key dimensions for learning architecture and explores case studies in leading schools that reflect pioneering, resilience-centric pedagogies. The findings highlight the importance of scenario-based learning, participatory design, and the use of technologies like AI, GIS, and digital twins to strengthen resilience. The article also explores how policy reformulation, accreditation mandates, and cross-sector collaborations can enforce the institutionalization of resilience education. It demands a pedagogical shift toward climate adaptation design studios, inter/transdisciplinary methods, and technological skills. The study ends with action guidelines for teachers, policymakers, and industry professionals who want to ensure that architectural education becomes responsive to resilient urban futures.
