Campus climate research has long been a focus of higher education scholarship; however, studies show that inequalities and a pervasive sense of not belonging continue to negatively affect students. This paper presents the results of a campus-wide survey conducted at a Minority-Serving Institution (MSI), with a sample of 820 undergraduate, master’s, Ph.D., and non-degree students. The authors explore students’ experiences on campus in relation to their identities as well as students’ perceptions of campus climate. Specifically, the paper examines students’ intergroup relations and how these influence their sense of belonging. The survey instrument developed in the frame of this project also included questions designed to assess opportunities students have to develop key values, attitudes, skills, knowledge, and critical understanding related to intercultural and democratic competences necessary for life and work in multicultural societies. This study identifies the areas students perceive as important for development, highlighting which values, attitudes, skills, knowledge, and critical understanding they have had the opportunity to cultivate during their time at the university and those they would like to develop further. The authors hope these findings will inform efforts to strengthen institutional support for more inclusive practices on culturally diverse university campuses and provide evidence-based guidance for designing effective pedagogical interventions. In recent years, amino-gem-bisphosphonic acids and their esters have been considered a family of compounds of great chemical and pharmacological interest due to their important biological properties and their value as key synthons in the synthesis of more complex molecules with biological interest. This explains why several research groups are interested in developing new methods for the preparation of these compounds. Therefore, we would like to report here a summary of the synthetic strategies published in the last fifteen years for the synthesis of acyclic and heterocyclic α-, β- and γ-amino-gem-bisphosphonates, as well as their application in the preparation of selected compounds of chemical and pharmacological interest. This information can be of general knowledge to researchers working in this area, as it provides the starting point for new methods and applications of these compounds. Full article

The dynamic development of distributed sources (mainly RES) contributes to the emergence of, among others, balance and overload problems. For this reason, many RES do not receive conditions for connection to the power grid in Poland. Operators sometimes extend permits based on the possibility of periodic power reduction in RES in the event of the problems mentioned above. Before making a decision, investors, for economic reasons, need information on the probability of annual power reduction in their potential installation. Analyses that allow one to determine such a probability require knowledge of the reliability indicators of transmission lines and transformers, as well as failure removal times. The article analyses the available literature on the annual risk of outages of these elements and methods to determine the appropriate reliability indicators. Example calculations were performed for two networks (test and real). The values of indicators and times that can be used in practice were indicated. The unique contribution of this article lies not only in the comprehensive comparison of current, relevant transmission line and transformer reliability analysis methods but also in developing the first reliability indices for the Polish power system in more than 30 years. It is based on the relationships presented in the article and their comparison with results reported in the international literature. Full article

Comparative Analysis of Robust Entanglement Generation in Engineered XX Spin Chains

We present a numerical investigation comparing two entanglement generation protocols in finite XX spin chains with varying spin magnitudes (s=1/2,1,3/2). Protocol 1 (P1) relies on staggered couplings to steer correlations toward the ends of the chain. At the same time, Protocol 2 (P2) adopts a dual-port architecture that uses optimized boundary fields to mediate virtual excitations between terminal spins. Our results show that P2 consistently outperforms P1 in all spin values, generating higher-fidelity entanglement in shorter timescales when evaluated under the same system parameters. Furthermore, P2 exhibits superior robustness under realistic imperfections, including diagonal and off-diagonal disorder, as well as dephasing noise. To further assess the resilience of both protocols in experimentally relevant settings, we employ the pseudomode formalism to characterize the impact of non-Markovian noise on the entanglement dynamics. Our analysis reveals that the dual-port mechanism (P2) remains effective even when memory effects are present, as it reduces the excitation of bulk modes that would otherwise enhance environment-induced backflow. Together, the scalability, efficiency, and noise resilience of the dual-port approach position it as a promising framework for entanglement distribution in solid-state quantum information platforms. In the Hexaflex model of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), psychological flexibility refers to the ability to openly embrace difficult thoughts and emotions while acting in alignment with personal values. In contrast, psychological inflexibility involves rigid avoidance and control strategies that hinder adaptive functioning. Although previously studied, more culturally relevant evidence is needed to inform interventions that promote well-being and mental health among Latin American students. This study explored manifestations of psychological flexibility and inflexibility in 15 undergraduate students from the University of Magdalena in Colombia (mean age = 20.13 years; 53.33% female) through semi-structured, face-to-face interviews (~45 min each). Data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), focusing on how participants described and made sense of their experiences. A total of 25 emergent themes were identified and grouped into 12 subordinate themes, mapped onto the 6 core ACT processes. The participants reported efforts to control or avoid distressing internal experiences, often resulting in difficulty acting in accordance with their values. The findings highlight a recurring ambivalence between avoidance and acceptance, and barriers to committed action, underscoring the dynamic interplay between flexibility and inflexibility. These results support the relevance of ACT-based interventions, such as structured group sessions that foster acceptance, mindfulness, and values-based behavior. Integrating this training into counseling and academic support services could enhance students’ well-being and performance. Future research should examine these dynamics longitudinally and across diverse contexts. Full article

Experimental Analysis on the Effect of Contact Pressure and Activity Level as Influencing Factors in PPG Sensor Performance

Photoplethysmographic (PPG) sensors are small and cheap wearable sensors which open the possibility of monitoring physiological parameters such as heart rate during normal daily routines, ultimately providing valuable information on health status. Despite their potential and distribution within wearable devices, their accuracy is affected by several influencing parameters, such as contact pressure and physical activity. In this study, the effect of contact pressure (i.e., at 20, 60, and 75 mmHg) and intensity of physical activity (i.e., at 3, 6, and 8 km/h) were evaluated on a sample of 25 subjects using both a reference device (i.e., an electrocardiography-based device) and a PPG sensor applied to the skin with controlled contact pressure values. Results showed differing accuracy and precision when measuring the heart rate at different pressure levels, achieving the best performance at a contact pressure of 60 mmHg, with a mean absolute percentage error of between 3.36% and 6.83% depending on the physical activity levels, and a Pearson’s correlation coefficient of between 0.81 and 0.95. Plus, considering the individual optimal contact pressure, measurement uncertainty significantly decreases at any contact pressure, for instance, decreasing from 15 bpm (at 60 mmHg) to 8 bpm when running at a speed of 6 km/h (coverage factor k = 2). These results may constitute useful information for both users and manufacturers to improve the metrological performance of PPG sensors and expand their use in a clinical context. Full article

Introduction: Hospitalization of children creates significant emotional and psychological stress for parents, highlighting the importance of addressing their needs in pediatric care settings. Aims: This study examines the perceptions of both parents and pediatric nurses regarding the needs of hospitalized children. Method: A cross-sectional survey using the validated Needs of Parents of Hospitalized Children (NPQ) was administered to 218 parents and 218 pediatric nurses in four hospitals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Key domains assessed included trust, information, and support. Group differences were evaluated using non-parametric statistical analyses. Results: Trust was prioritized more by parents (83.9%) than nurses (72.4%) (p < 0.05). Both groups deemed information important, but parents (87.2%) rated it as more necessary than nurses (74.1%) (p = 0.02). Parents (79.8%) expressed a greater need for support compared to nurses (67.3%) (p = 0.03). Conclusions: This study identified perceptual differences between parents and nurses regarding trust, communication, and support. Some differences were statistically significant at the p < 0.01 level, while others were suggestive (p-value between 0.01 and 0.05) and require further investigation. These disparities suggest a need to foster mutual understanding and improve communication practices to better align healthcare delivery with family expectations and strengthen family-centered care. Performance Evaluation of Real-Time Image-Based Heat Release Rate Prediction Model Using Deep Learning and Image Processing Methods

Heat release rate (HRR) is a key indicator for characterizing fire behavior, and it is conventionally measured under laboratory conditions. However, this measurement is limited in its widespread application to various fire conditions, due to its high cost, operational complexity, and lack of real-time predictive capability. Therefore, this study proposes an image-based HRR prediction model that uses deep learning and image processing techniques. The flame region in a fire video was segmented using the YOLO-YCbCr model, which integrates YCbCr color-space-based segmentation with YOLO object detection. For comparative analysis, the YOLO segmentation model was used. Furthermore, the fire diameter and flame height were determined from the spatial information of the segmented flame, and the HRR was predicted based on the correlation between flame size and HRR. The proposed models were applied to various experimental fire videos, and their prediction performances were quantitatively assessed. The results indicated that the proposed models accurately captured the HRR variations over time, and applying the average flame height calculation enhanced the prediction performance by reducing fluctuations in the predicted HRR. These findings demonstrate that the image-based HRR prediction model can be used to estimate real-time HRR values in diverse fire environments. Full article

Background: Two-dimensional periapical radiographs (PAs) only offer limited information regarding three-dimensional periodontal infrabony defects. In contrast, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) enables visualization of the entire defect morphology. This study aimed to evaluate the agreement between CBCT and direct intrasurgical measurements (ISs) regarding the characteristics of infrabony defects, including measurements of defect depth, width, the type of defect (one-wall, two-wall, three-wall), and defect extension. Methods: Intrasurgical and radiographic assessments were performed by two calibrated examiners on 26 infrabony defects in 17 patients who underwent periodontal surgery. The defect depth, width, type, and extension were compared between intrasurgical observations and PA or CBCT findings. The CBCT assessment was performed mainly using axial reconstructions. Angle measurements were compared between CBCT and PAs. Results: The mean differences between CBCT and intrasurgical measurements were −0.11 ± 0.49 mm for depth and −0.07 ± 0.41 mm for width, with no significant differences. The ICC values were 0.938 and 0.923 for depth and width, respectively. The mean difference in width between PAs and ISs was significantly different (−0.36 ± 0.73 mm; p = 0.002). CBCT demonstrated high agreement with intrasurgical observations for defect type (κ = 0.819) and defect extension (κ = 0.855), while lower agreements were found for PAs. Conclusions: CBCT is a valid assessment modality for infrabony defects. It demonstrated strong agreement with ISs—as the gold standard—for depth and width measurements, and its agreement with ISs regarding defect type and extension appeared to surpass that of PAs. Faxonius limosus is an invasive alien crayfish species that has a negative effect on aquatic biodiversity. Using its meat as food could help reduce its ecological impact while providing a protein source. In order to do that, the initial step was to determine safety and nutritional parameters of crayfish meat. Samples from two localities were analyzed for energy value, moisture, ash, protein, fat, carbohydrates, fatty acid and amino acid composition, and macro- and micro-mineral content. Moreover, an online survey was conducted in order to evaluate the public’s current knowledge about invasive alien species and willingness to consume crayfish meat as a food product. Heavy metal concentrations (Hg, Pb, Cd) were below European Commission limits, confirming safety. The meat had a high protein content (16.68%), low fat (0.22%), and a favorable fatty acid profile with notable levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Predominant macro-minerals were K, Na, Ca, Mg, and P, while Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn were the most abundant micro-minerals. Even though most participants (79.7%) were not informed about Faxonius limosus, the majority expressed willingness to participate in the assessment of new products made from invasive crayfish. These findings suggest that F. limosus meat is a nutritionally valuable and safe alternative protein source, with potential for sustainable food production and ecological management. Full article

Background/Objectives: Major depressive disorder (MDD), including late-onset forms, is a prevalent and disabling condition. Despite multiple pharmacological treatment options, over half of patients fail to achieve full remission. This systematic review aims to assess current evidence on the influence of pharmacogenetic factors on antidepressant response and safety, with a focus on patients with major and late-life depression. Methods: We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines (PROSPERO: CRD42020212345). Studies published in the past five years involving adult patients with MDD or late-onset depression and pharmacogenetic data were included. Results: From 793 abstracts screened, 29 studies with 39,975 participants were included. CYP2C19 and CYP2D6 were the most frequently analyzed genes (41% and 17% of studies, respectively). Poor metabolizers for CYP2C19 showed higher plasma levels of SSRIs, leading to increased adverse effects. In contrast, ultrarapid metabolizers had significantly lower response rates. Variants in SLC6A4 and other genes (e.g., HTR2A, ABCB1) were also associated with treatment outcomes. Combinatorial pharmacogenetic testing showed superior predictive value compared to single-gene approaches. Conclusions: Genetic variants in CYP2C19, CYP2D6, and SLC6A4 may affect the efficacy and tolerability of antidepressant therapy. Integrating this information into clinical practice may allow more personalized prescribing and improved outcomes. Full article

In recent decades, university dormitories have gradually evolved from traditional residential spaces into educationally meaningful venues that support informal learning. However, limited research has explored how supportive environmental factors within dormitories influence students’ informal learning experiences. This study aims to evaluate key environmental factors that affect students’ satisfaction with informal learning in dormitory settings. Based on a comprehensive literature review, two types of informal learning behaviors—individual and collaborative—were defined, and a multi-dimensional evaluation framework comprising five categories and 26 environmental indicators was established. Field observations and structured questionnaires were employed to assess students’ satisfaction with each environmental factor and their overall informal learning experiences. Quantitative analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between environmental conditions and learning satisfaction. Results show that all five-factor categories—spatial designs, natural environments, physical settings, social aspects, and resources—positively influence informal learning, with resources being the most impactful. While environmental influences on individual and collaborative learning exhibit minor differences, the overall patterns are consistent. Compared to other informal learning spaces on campus, dormitory users place greater emphasis on spatial controllability. This study further demonstrates the cognitive and emotional value of dormitory environments and proposes targeted directions for optimizing them as informal learning spaces. Full article

This study aimed to evaluate the levels of physical activity and HRQoL and investigate the influence of potential confounding factors on these outcomes in patients with CKD G5D. Methods: One hundred and twenty-five patients with CKD G5D and 129 healthy controls completed a template with their general demographic and clinical information, followed by the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Moreover, for patients with CKD G5D, the kidney disease-targeted version (KDQOL-SF36) was employed, whereas the healthy controls completed the standard SF-36. Results: A total of 59.2% of patients with CKD G5D demonstrated low physical activity levels, with a mean IPAQ score of 1163.38 MET-min/week, which was significantly lower than that of healthy controls (p = 0.002). Spearman’s rho correlation analysis revealed significant associations between KDQOL subscales and variables including sex, age, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), hemodialysis (HD) vintage, educational level, employment status, and IPAQ activity category (p-values < 0.05). In the regression analyses, physical component summary (PCS) scores were significantly predicted by sex (β = 0.180, p = 0.036), CCI (β = 0.239, p = 0.045), and IPAQ total score (β = 0.316, p < 0.001). IPAQ scores were predicted by age (β = –0.303, p = 0.003), HD vintage (β = 0.275, p = 0.012), and PCS (β = 0.343, p = 0.002). Conclusions: The findings demonstrated a statistically significant association between physical activity and HRQoL, underscoring the importance of promoting physical activity among patients with CKD G5D. Additionally, several underexplored sociodemographic and clinical confounders were identified as significant correlates of these outcome measures. Full article

An Upper Partial Moment Framework for Pathfinding Problem Under Travel Time Uncertainty

Route planning under uncertain traffic conditions requires accounting for not only expected travel times but also the risk of late arrivals. This study proposes a mean-upper partial moment (MUPM) framework for pathfinding that explicitly considers travel time unreliability. The framework incorporates a benchmark travel time to measure the upper partial moment (UPM), capturing both the probability and severity of delays. By adjusting a risk parameter (θ), the model reflects different traveler risk preferences and unifies several existing reliability measures, including on-time arrival probability, late arrival penalty, and semi-variance. A bi-objective model is formulated to simultaneously minimize mean travel time and UPM. Theoretical analysis shows that the MUPM framework is consistent with the expected utility theory (EUT) and stochastic dominance theory (SDT), providing a behavioral foundation for the model. To efficiently solve the model, an SDT-based label-correcting algorithm is adapted, with a pre-screening step to reduce unnecessary pairwise path comparisons. Numerical experiments using GPS probe vehicle data from Louisville, Kentucky, USA, demonstrate that varying θ values lead to different non-dominated paths. Lower θ values emphasize frequent small delays but may overlook excessive delays, while higher θ values effectively capture the tail risk, aligning with the behavior of risk-averse travelers. The MUPM framework provides a flexible, behaviorally grounded, and computationally scalable approach to pathfinding under uncertainty. It holds strong potential for applications in traveler information systems, transportation planning, and network resilience analysis. Full article

Background and aim: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is an important and well-established modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, including peripheral artery disease (PAD). We aimed at evaluating the lipid profile at admission in PAD patients with an indication for invasive treatment. Methods: Among patients with PAD diagnosis admitted to the vascular surgery department, those receiving statins and those with LDL-C values in the recommended target (<55 mg/dL) were identified. The correlation of LDL-C values with different clinical variables was investigated. Results: Of the 399 patients, 259 (65%) were on statin therapy. According to multivariate linear regression analysis, diabetes (p = 0.004), previous CAD history (p < 0.001), and statin therapy (p < 0.001) were independently associated with LDL-C levels. Patients with LDL-C < 55 mg/dL at admission were 89 (22% of the overall cohort). Among these patients, diabetes (48.3% versus 35.8%, p = 0.036), CAD history (52.8% versus 30%, p < 0.001), and statin use (91% versus 57.4%, p < 0.001) were more frequent as compared with patients not at target. Conclusion: Despite the very high cardiovascular risk of our group, the rate of statin prescription was very low and far from ideal. Only a small percentage of patients achieved target LDL-C values. Patients with coexistent diabetes and CAD had lower LDL-C values, suggesting management by specialists with greater attention to lipid profile and pointing out an urgent need for information on cardiovascular disease management.
