Dam monitoring tracks environmental variables (water level, temperature) and structural responses (deformation, seepage, and stress) to assess safety and performance. Structural health monitoring (SHM) refers to the systematic observation and analysis of the structural condition over time, and it is essential in maintaining the safety, functionality, and long-term performance of dams. This review examines monitoring data applications, covering structural health assessment methods, historical motivations, and key challenges. It discusses monitoring components, data acquisition processes, and sensor roles, stressing the need to integrate environmental, operational, and structural data for decision making. Key objectives include risk management, operational efficiency, safety evaluation, environmental impact assessment, and maintenance planning. Methodologies such as numerical modeling, statistical analysis, and machine learning are critically analyzed, highlighting their strengths and limitations and the demand for advanced predictive techniques. This paper also explores future trends in dam monitoring, offering insights for engineers and researchers to enhance infrastructure resilience. By synthesizing current practices and emerging innovations, this review aims to guide improvements in dam safety protocols, ensuring reliable and sustainable dam operations. Medieval Islamic bustān gardens in the western Mediterranean played a crucial role in preserving and enriching rose diversity through the cultivation of species from the eastern Mediterranean and western Asia. These gardens, particularly in Al-Andalus, maintained distinctive rose varieties characterized by diverse flower morphology—ranging from white to deep crimson and near-black hues, including various yellow shades—and complex fragrance profiles with multiple olfactory nuances. The botanical heritage from these medieval Islamic gardens demonstrates remarkable persistence, with several of these cultivated rose species still found today in abandoned cortijos and aldeas throughout the mountains of eastern Spain. This study examines the transmission of rose culture through medieval Islamic bustān gardens, analyzing how these gardens served as repositories for ancient cultivars while introducing new varieties from eastern regions. Through examination of historical texts, iconographic evidence, and field documentation of surviving populations, we trace the continuity of medieval Islamic rose cultivation practices and their lasting impact on the rural landscape of eastern Spain. Flower scent is prominent as the leading factor determining preferences for medieval heritage rose cultivars, together with color and shape. The survival of these roses in abandoned settlements provides unique insight into the durability of medieval horticultural systems and the adaptation of cultivated species to semi-wild conditions over centuries. Background/Objectives: Men have historically contributed significantly to mental health nursing, particularly in inpatient settings, where their presence has supported patient recovery and safety. Despite this legacy, men remain under-represented in the nursing workforce, and addressing this imbalance is critical to workforce sustainability. This study offers a novel contribution by exploring the lived experiences, motivations, and professional identities of men in mental health nursing, an area that has received limited empirical attention. The aim of the study is to examine the characteristics, qualities, and attributes of mental health nurses who are male, which contributes to their attraction to and retention within the profession. Methods: A qualitative interpretive inquiry was conducted among nurses who were male and either currently or previously employed in mental health settings. Two focus groups were conducted using semi-structured questions to explore their career pathways, motivations, professional identities, and perceived contributions. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes and patterns in their narratives. Results: Seven participants, with 10–30 years of experience, participated. They had entered the profession through diverse pathways, expressing strong alignment between personal values and professional roles. Five themes emerged and centred on mental health being the heart of health, personal and professional fulfillment, camaraderie and teamwork, a profound respect for individuals and compassion, and overcoming and enjoying the challenge. Conclusions: Mental health nurses who are male bring unique contributions to the profession, embodying compassion, resilience, and ethical advocacy. Their experiences challenge traditional gender norms and redefine masculinity in health care. Fostering inclusive environments, mentorship, and leadership opportunities is essential to support their growth. These insights inform strategies to strengthen recruitment, retention, and the future of mental health nursing. Full article

Background: Maxillary sinus puncture (MSP), once a cornerstone for diagnosing and treating acute rhinosinusitis (ARS), has declined with the rise in less invasive techniques. This study explores MSP trends, its association with age, and long-term effects on quality of life using data from the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP). Methods: Data from SHIP-START-2 (n = 2332), SHIP-START-3 (n = 1717), and SHIP-TREND-0 (n = 4420) cohorts were analyzed to assess MSP prevalence, demographic correlations, and quality- of-life impacts using SNOT-20-D, EQ-5D-3L, and SF-12. Results: MSP prevalence was higher in older SHIP-START cohorts (11.2% in START-2) compared to SHIP-TREND-0 (9.5%), reflecting its historical decline. The procedure was more frequently reported by participants aged > 60 years (e.g., 14.0% in START-2) than by younger groups (<40 years: 3.5% in START-2). MSP was associated with increased SNOT-20-D scores across cohorts (e.g., +0.28 in START-2, p < 0.001) and minor reductions in EQ-5D-3L and SF-12 mental health scores, indicating greater symptom burden but limited general health impact. The age- and time-related decline in MSP highlights its diminishing role in modern practice. Conclusions: While MSP offers diagnostic insights and serves as an indicator for ARS, its modest impact on long-term quality-of-life underscores the need for alternative, minimally invasive techniques for sinonasal conditions. In an era of rapid technological advancement—particularly with the accelerated development of artificial intelligence and digital technologies—entrepreneurship enables firms to dynamically adjust their strategies in response to environmental uncertainty and helps them maintain sustainable competitive advantages over time. As a key concept in entrepreneurship research, entrepreneurial orientation (EO) has long attracted scholarly attention. However, existing studies on EO have primarily focused on its specific outcomes, while insufficient attention has been paid to its antecedents from the perspective of internal threats. Under the threat of performance shortfalls, firms’ strategic choices are influenced not only by resource constraints but also by managerial cognitive biases. Drawing on Behavioral Theory of the Firm, we explore the moderating roles of managerial overconfidence and myopia in the relationship between performance shortfalls and EO. This study aims to uncover the cognitive “black box” behind why some firms are more likely to trigger entrepreneurial behavior in adverse situations. Based on panel data from 2822 A-share listed companies in China spanning the period from 2009 to 2020, and using a fixed-effects regression model, our findings indicate that both historical and social performance shortfalls have significant positive effects on EO. Further analysis reveals that the positive impact of performance shortfalls on EO is attenuated under conditions of heightened managerial overconfidence and myopia. By enriching the boundary conditions of EO from a cognitive perspective, this study provides a theoretical explanation for how firms can engage in entrepreneurial behavior under threat by reducing cognitive biases, thereby offering both theoretical and managerial insights into how firms can maintain sustainable development under crisis conditions. Understanding population connectivity and genetic structure is crucial for the effective management of exploited marine species. This study investigates the population genetics of the common European squid (Loligo vulgaris) across the Mediterranean Sea, focusing on samples from the Aegean Sea and comparative sequences from Western Mediterranean, Eastern Mediterranean, and Atlantic coasts. A total of 67 COI mitochondrial sequences were analyzed, identifying 12 haplotypes and 27 polymorphic sites. Population-level genetic diversity, pairwise FST values, and haplotype network analyses revealed pronounced genetic differentiation in the eastern Mediterranean contrasting with the genetic homogeneity observed among Western populations. The low haplotype diversity observed in the Greek populations of L. vulgaris may be influenced by a combination of ecological and historical factors, as the Aegean region is recognized as a hotspot of endemism and historical population fragmentation. The results indicate the existence of at least two genetically differentiated clusters within the Mediterranean basin. This study advances current knowledge of the genetic structure of Loligo vulgaris by providing novel genetic data on populations from the eastern Mediterranean, offering valuable insights for future conservation and management strategies for the species. Socio-Economic and Environmental Trade-Offs of Sustainable Energy Transition in Kentucky

A just and sustainable energy transition in historically coal-dependent regions like Kentucky requires more than the adoption of new technologies and market-based solutions. This study uses a stated preferences approach to evaluate public support for various attributes of energy transition programs, revealing broad backing for moving away from coal, as indicated by a negative willingness to pay (WTP) for the status quo (–USD 4.63). Key findings show strong bipartisan support for solar energy, with Democrats showing the highest WTP at USD 8.29, followed closely by Independents/Others at USD 8.22, and Republicans at USD 8.08. Wind energy also garnered support, particularly among Republicans (USD 4.04), who may view it as more industry-compatible and less ideologically polarizing. Job creation was a dominant priority across political affiliations, especially for Independents (USD 9.07), indicating a preference for tangible, near-term economic benefits. Similarly, preserving cultural values tied to coal received support among Independents/Others (USD 4.98), emphasizing the importance of place-based identity in shaping preferences. In contrast, social support programs (e.g., job retraining) and certain post-mining land uses (e.g., recreation and conservation) were less favored, possibly due to their abstract nature, delayed benefits, and political framing. Findings from Kentucky offer insights for other coal-reliant states like Wyoming, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Illinois. Ultimately, equitable transitions must integrate local voices, address cultural and economic realities, and ensure community-driven planning and investment. Full article

Urban regeneration is an important issue in urban development, in which the regeneration of historic districts is a frontier and sensitive field. In this study, the regeneration process of Zhongshan Road Historic District in Qingdao, China, spanning over three decades from 1990 until the present, was investigated, and an analysis was performed using a longitudinal case study approach involving interviews, field visits, and the literature data within the analytical framework of the interaction between “space production” and “place-making”. The findings are as follows: (1) The regeneration of Zhongshan Road can be understood as “space production” dominated by power and capital seeking to maximize the benefits. This process can be divided into five stages, with the intensity of the “space production”, dominated by power and capital, becoming increasingly higher, and the means of achieving “space production” within “place-making” becoming progressively more covert. (2) “Place-making” consists of five stages: no place, symbolic place, imaginary place, declining place, and new place. (3) “Place-making” counteracts “space production”, making the subjects of “space production” constantly adjust their production strategies and methods. The main theoretical contribution of this study is the introduction of “place-making” into the analytical framework of “space production”, thereby deepening the empirical analytical capacity of “space production” theory and offering effective insights for the regeneration of historic districts. Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is increasingly recognized as a significant comorbidity in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D), despite its historical association with type 2 diabetes. This review focuses on summarizing current findings regarding the role of insulin resistance in the development of MASLD in T1D, as well as examining the relationship between MASLD and diabetes-related complications. We will also briefly discuss the prevalence, diagnostic challenges, associated complications, and potential mechanisms underlying MASLD in T1D. Although insulin resistance is well established in MASLD among those with type 2 diabetes, its role in T1D requires further clarification. Emerging markers, such as the estimated glucose disposal rate, offer early insight into this relationship. MASLD in T1D is linked to both microvascular and macrovascular complications, including nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular disease. Variability in prevalence estimates reflects inconsistencies among imaging modalities, emphasizing the need for standardized, non-invasive diagnostic approaches. Recognizing and addressing MASLD and its links to insulin resistance and diabetes complications in T1D is vital for mitigating long-term complications and enhancing clinical outcomes. Full article

With the rapid growth of elevator installations, conventional scheduled maintenance struggles to meet the dual demands of ensuring operational safety and cost control. This study proposes an innovative on-demand maintenance method that aligns with the Chinese policy directives on elevator maintenance reform. First, we conduct a historical fault cause analysis to identify the root causes of elevator entrapment incidents. Next, we establish an entrapment prediction model based on our historical data. Then, we design an elevator entrapment risk index report according to the prediction results. Finally, we formulate an on-demand maintenance plan that combines insights from the report with the conclusions of the cause analysis. Field implementation and comparative experiments demonstrate that the proposed on-demand maintenance method outperforms the scheduled one. The result shows significant reductions in accident and maintenance workload, justifying the practical value of this approach for the industry. Full article

Existing research predominantly focuses on the preservation or renewal models of the physical forms of historic cultural districts, with limited exploration of their roles in stimulating tourists’ cognitive, affective resonance, and behavioral interactions. This study addresses historic cultural districts by evaluating the space quality and its impact on tourist experiences through the “cognition-affect-behavior” framework, integrating GIS, street view semantic segmentation, VR eye-tracking, and web crawling technologies. The findings reveal significant multidimensional differences in how space quality influences tourist experiences: the impact intensities of functional diversity, sky visibility, road network accessibility, green visibility, interface openness, and public facility convenience decrease sequentially, with path coefficients of 0.261, 0.206, 0.205, 0.204, 0.201, and 0.155, respectively. Additionally, space quality exerts an indirect effect on tourist experiences through the mediating roles of cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions, with a path coefficient of 0.143. This research provides theoretical support and practical insights for empowering cultural heritage space governance with digital technologies in the context of cultural and tourism integration. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has evolved from a breakthrough ophthalmologic imaging tool into a cornerstone technology in interventional cardiology. After its initial applications in retinal imaging in the early 1990s, OCT was subsequently envisioned for cardiovascular use. In 1995, its ability to visualize atherosclerotic plaques was demonstrated in an in vitro study, and the following year marked the acquisition of the first in vivo OCT image of a human coronary artery. A major milestone followed in 2000, with the first intracoronary imaging in a living patient using time-domain OCT. However, the real inflection point came in 2006 with the advent of frequency-domain OCT, which dramatically improved acquisition speed and image quality, enabling safe and routine imaging in the catheterization lab. With the advent of high-resolution, second-generation frequency-domain systems, OCT has become clinically practical and widely adopted in catheterization laboratories. OCT progressively entered interventional cardiology, first proving its safety and feasibility, then demonstrating superiority over angiography alone in guiding percutaneous coronary interventions and improving outcomes. Today, it plays a central role not only in clinical practice but also in cardiovascular research, enabling precise assessment of plaque biology and response to therapy. With the advent of artificial intelligence and hybrid imaging systems, OCT is now evolving into a true precision-medicine tool—one that not only guides today’s therapies but also opens new frontiers for discovery, with vast potential still waiting to be explored. Tracing its historical evolution from ophthalmology to cardiology, this narrative review highlights the key technological milestones, clinical insights, and future perspectives that position OCT as an indispensable modality in contemporary interventional cardiology. As a guiding thread, the myth of Prometheus is used to symbolize the evolution of OCT—from its illuminating beginnings in ophthalmology to its transformative role in cardiology—as a metaphor for how light, innovation, and knowledge can reveal what was once hidden and redefine clinical practice. Aquatic macrophytes are a vital component of lake ecosystems, profoundly influencing ecosystem structure and function. Under future scenarios of more frequent extreme floods and intensified lake eutrophication, aquatic macrophytes will face increasing challenges. Therefore, understanding aquatic macrophyte responses to flood disturbances and nutrient enrichment is crucial for predicting future vegetation dynamics in lake ecosystems. This study focuses on Huangmaotan Lake, a Yangtze River floodplain lake, where we reconstructed 200-year successional trajectories of macrophyte communities and their driving mechanisms. With a multiproxy approach we analyzed a well-dated sediment core incorporating plant macrofossils, grain size, nutrient elements, heavy metals, and historical flood records from the watershed. The results demonstrate a significant shift in the macrophyte community, from species that existed before 1914 to species that existed by 2020. Unlike the widespread macrophyte degradation seen in most regional lakes, this lake has maintained clear-water plant dominance and experienced continuous vegetation expansion over the past 50 years. We attribute this to the interrelated effects of floods and the enrichment of ecosystems with nutrients. Specifically, our findings suggest that nutrient enrichment can mitigate the stress effects of floods on aquatic macrophytes, while flood disturbances help reduce excess nutrient concentrations in the water column. These findings offer applicable insights for aquatic vegetation restoration in the Yangtze River floodplain and other comparable lake systems worldwide. Full article

The genus Sonchus (Asteraceae) comprises 98 species, including 17 predominantly herbaceous taxa native to the Mediterranean region. These plants have long been utilized as traditional wild food sources due to their high nutritional value, as they are rich in vitamins A, C, and K, essential minerals, and bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This review aims to provide a comprehensive synthesis of the taxonomy, geographic distribution, phytochemical composition, traditional uses, historical significance, and pharmacological properties of Sonchus species. A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, focusing on studies from 1980 to 2024. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, and methodological quality was assessed using standardized tools. A bibliometric analysis of 440 publications (from 1856 to 2025) reveals evolving research trends, with S. oleraceus, S. arvensis, and S. asper being the most extensively studied species. The review provides detailed taxonomic insights into 17 species and 14 subspecies, emphasizing their ecological adaptations and biogeographical patterns. Additionally, it highlights the cultural and medicinal relevance of Sonchus since antiquity while underscoring the threats posed by environmental degradation and changing dietary habits. Sonchus oleraceus and S. tenerrimus dominate the culinary applications of the genus, likely due to favorable taste, wide accessibility, and longstanding cultural importance. The comprehensive nutritional profile of Sonchus species positions these plants as valuable contributors to dietary diversity and food security. Finally, the study identifies current knowledge gaps and proposes future research directions to support the conservation and sustainable utilization of Sonchus species. Full article

This study investigates the concept of landscape services (LS), which integrate environmental and sociocultural dimensions of sustainable development. Recognizing landscapes as essential to daily life and well-being, the research aims to support sustainable spatial planning by analyzing both their potential and their actual use. The study has three main objectives: (1) to assess the potential of 16 selected landscape types to provide six key LS through expert evaluation; (2) to determine actual LS usage patterns among the local community (residents); and (3) to identify agreements and discrepancies between expert assessments and resident use. The services analyzed include providing space for daily activities; regulating spatial structure through diversity and compositional richness; enhancing physical and mental health; enabling passive and active recreation; supporting personal fulfillment; and fostering social interaction. Expert-based surveys and participatory mapping with residents were used to assess the provision and use of LS. The results indicate consistent evaluations for forest and historical urban landscapes (high potential and use) and mining and transportation landscapes (low potential and use). However, significant differences emerged for mountain LS, rated highly by experts but used minimally by residents. These insights highlight the importance of aligning expert planning with community needs to promote sustainable land use policies and reduce spatial conflicts. Full article
